The beast tribes of Eorzea worship and summon forth beings known as primals, among which are Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. Yet what is a god to one man is a demon to another, for the city-states of Eorzea see these beings as a grave threat to their collective survival.
In times immemorial, there lived mages who had not only the power to summon the primals, but also the means to transmute the primals' essences, thus binding them to their will. Known simply as summoners, the existence of these men and women and their arcane art have been all but lost to the ages.

Summoner (SMN) is a Disciple of Magic job unlockable at level 30 as an upgrade from the Arcanist class and is a  Magical Ranged DPS job. The two jobs branching off Arcanist were the only ones added at the release of A Realm Reborn.[1]

General information

Guild

The Arcanists' Guild is in the city of Limsa Lominsa. Arcanists must choose to specialize into summoner (or scholar) once they reach level 30, and complete the quests Main Scenario Quest Sylph-management and Feature Quest Sinking Doesmaga.

Note: It's required to be an Arcanist to receive the follow-up quest and unlock summoner, this means   Soul of the Scholar must be unequipped.
Note 2: Being the only example of a split-class, Summoner and Scholar share a level since they are both based on Arcanist.

The job trainer is Y'mhitra, who is normally located in Old Gridania (10.9, 6.3).

Equipment

The summoner is a disciple of magic and wears armor and accessories "of Casting." They use grimoires as weapons. Prior to level 50, Arcanist, Summoner, and Scholar all share the same weapons with few exceptions.

Aetherflow & Trance Gauge is Summoner's Job Gauge.

Aetherflow Gauge

Upon learning the action   Energy Drain, the Aetherflow Gauge will be displayed, indicating stacks of Aetherflow. Maximum Stacks of Aetherflow can be accumulated using Energy Drain and   Energy Siphon, then used to execute certain actions such as   Fester and   Painflare (acquired at level 40).

Trance Gauge

When you learn the action   Aethercharge, the Trance Gauge will be displayed, showing the amount of time remaining for Aethercharge. Aethercharge will grant Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum. Using these will allow you to summon from three pets by performing   Summon Ifrit,   Summon Titan, or   Summon Garuda.

When you summon a pet, you will gain the attunement that is associated with it. Attunement Stacks and their duration will be displayed on the Trance Gauge. They will change the qualities of   Gemshine and   Precious Brilliance (acquired at level 26).

When you learn the trait   Aethercharge Mastery, the Trance Gauge will be displayed, showing the amount of time remaining for   Dreadwyrm Trance. Dreadwyrm Trance will grant Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum. While Dreadwyrm Trance is active,   Ruin III becomes   Astral Impulse, and   Outburst becomes   Astral Flare.

When you summon a pet, you will gain the aether that is associated with it. Aether stacks and their duration will be displayed on the Trance Gauge. They will change the qualities of   Gemshine and   Precious Brilliance (acquired at level 26).

Upon learning the trait   Enhanced Dreadwyrm Trance, you will be able to use   Summon Bahamut and call forth Demi-Bahamut. The time remaining on Demi-Bahamut's summon will be displayed on the Trance Gauge. Summon Bahamut will grant Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum.   Ruin III will become   Astral Impulse,   Outburst will become   Astral Flare, and   Astral Flow will become   Deathflare.

When you summon a pet, you will gain the aether that is associated with it. Aether stacks and their duration will be displayed on the Trance Gauge. They will change the qualities of   Gemshine and   Precious Brilliance (acquired at level 26). Upon learning the trait   Elemental Mastery (acquired at level 86),   Astral Flow will change to match the type of attunement.

Upon learning the trait   Enhanced Summon Bahamut II, it is possible to summon Solar Bahamut to fight at your side. Summoning Solar Bahamut also grants you Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum. The Trance Gauge will indicate Solar Bahamut's time remaining on the battlefield, during which   Ruin III will be upgraded to   Umbral Impulse,   Tri-disaster to   Umbral Flare, and   Astral Flow to   Sunflare.

In millennia past, there lived mages who had the power to siphon the very essence of primals—gods of Eorzea’s beast tribes—and then transmute this energy into aetherial entities under their command. Known simply as summoners, the existence of these men and women and their arcane art had all but been lost to the ages until a recent resurgence triggered by the uncovering of long lost knowledge.

History

In a civilization founded in the early years of the Third Astral Era, the Allagan Empire continued to expand even after the death of its first ruler, Emperor Xande. With the resources of a vast domain of conquered nations at their command, the Allagans made great strides in the field of aetherochemical science, enriching the lives of those nestled within the empire’s embrace. For many, however, Allag’s rule meant naught more than invasion and tyranny—a suffocating yoke which they sought to cast off with the might of primal deities. As these clashes dragged on, the summoning rituals of the oppressed grew more desperate, skewing the land’s aetherial balance ever further away from equilibrium.

It was during these conflicts that a new breed of mage arose who could transform the stolen essences of primals into biddable allies—aetheric servants known as “egi” that were employed to great effect in the war against the summoned divinities. The Allagan people named these arcane adepts “summoners” in honor of their victories, and showered them with praise and respect. As the age wore on, however, the empire saw the emergence of mages who, made bold by virtue of their unsurpassed power, began wielding summoning magic to further their own ambitions. The once heroic reputation of summoners was sullied, and people came to believe that those who practiced the art were irrevocably tainted by the influence of the primals. Vilified and hunted by the superstitious, summoners gradually fell in number until both their existence and their knowledge faded completely from history.

Equipment

Evoker Attire

Raiment of the summoner, discovered by the Sons of Saint Coinach along the shores of Silvertear Lake. These Allagan garments are estimated to be several thousand years old, their impeccable condition bespeaking the quality and ingenuity of their craftsmanship.

The Veil of Wiyu

An ancient Allagan grimoire painstakingly restored by Gerolt, a weaponsmith and reinvigorator of damaged relics. Named after a famed Allagan summoner—her other, more benign legacy being the eponymous faerie story—The Veil of Wiyu was in such disrepair at the time of its discovery that there was thought to be little hope of it ever being used again.

Caller Attire

This ancient raiment was excavated alongside other Allagan relics at the Silvertear Lake dig site. Festooned with ostentatious adornments, the garb was likely designed in the time when summoners yet enjoyed the adulation of the populace as conquering heroes. Its gaudy appearance led the Sons of Saint Coinach scholar who unearthed the attire to speculate that the attire was ceremonial in nature, but others cite its exceptional arcane properties as undeniable proof that it served a more practical purpose.

Almandal

This millennia-old grimoire of Allagan construction holds knowledge pertaining to the summoning of four distinct primals. The garish, golden decoration on the cover is believed to depict the interwoven aspects of every egi under the original owner’s command—a symbol designed to aggrandize the summoner’s might and expertise. A masterful work of deceptively intricate occult patterns, the incantations on each page have been engraved with a mythril stylus, leaving the ink to settle into almost-imperceptible furrows.

Tricks of the Trade

  • Teraflare: An offensive magick that echoes the ruinous blasts of light unleashed by the elder primal Bahamut. All those who bathed in the dreadwyrm’s scattered aether during the Seventh Umbral Calamity possess the latent potential to master this mighty summoner spell.
  • Enkindle: An advanced technique by which the summoner unlocks the true might of an egi, so named for the manner in which the aetherial fires of the egi’s existence are stoked into a roaring blaze.
  • Tri-disaster: An offensive incantation comprised of three separate corrosive elements that gnaw away at a foe's corporeal being. This technique is thought to have been devised in remembrance of the trio of catastrophes instigated by the Warring Triad.
  • Dreadwyrm Trance: Certain egi require an impossible quantity of life force to manifest as a separate entity. This technique was devised to circumvent such mortal limitations, allowing the summoner to harness the power of the elder primal Bahamut by infusing his own being with the essence of the mighty dreadwyrm.

Tristan Lowe

A former member of the Immortal Flames with the rank of second lieutenant, Tristan served as a thaumaturge in Captain Dancing Wolf's primal hunting unit alongside his elder brother, Kahedin. The siblings joined the expedition which succeeded in banishing Ifrit, but before victory was achieved, Kahedin fell afoul of the entity’s corrupting influence. Obeying the unwritten law of his troop to “offer mercy” to any in thrall to a primal, Tristan took it upon himself to slay his own brother. Following the tragic incident, Tristan gradually withdrew into brooding silence, until one day he simply vanished from his post. He appeared again years later swathed in ebony robes and ominous power, an adept of the long-lost art of the summoner.

Y'mhitra Rhul

Born the seventh of twelve sisters, this native of Sharlayan attended the prestigious Studium where she specialized in the field of archaeology. Upon graduating, Y'mhitra joined the Sons of Saint Coinach, an organization dedicated to the exploration of the Allagan legacy, and when the Crystal Tower speared through to the surface following the catastrophic events of the Seventh Umbral Calamity, she made the crossing to Eorzea alongside her colleagues to survey the surrounding ruins. It was during these excavations that the researchers discovered Allagan tomestones detailing the existence of summoners. Intrigued and excited, Y’mhitra relocated to Gridania to further pursue the trail of history and deepen her understanding of the summoning arts.

Egi

“Egi” is the name given to the conjured avatars of a summoner. Only a practitioner whose aether has been stained by the essence of a primal can thenceforth shape her own energies into a willful embodiment of the original entity’s dominant aspect. In the ancient tongue of the Allagan Empire, “egi” translates approximately to “pure” or “the essence of.”

Ascian of the Twelfth Chalice

A lesser Paragon in service to the Ascian Lahabrea, this sinister villain preyed upon the vulnerable Tristan, fanning the latter’s intense hatred for beastmen and their primals. By empowering the young man with the knowledge of summoning, the Ascian of the Twelfth Chalice hoped to set Tristan on a campaign of bloody vengeance that would provoke the beast tribes into calling forth ever more potent incarnations of their brutal deities. Summoner's Panoply

Channeler's Horn

Research into the nature of the alloy from which this horn was cast has thus far borne no fruit, though some conjecture that it may have been mined on the southern continent during the brief, tenuous Allagan occupation of Meracydiz.

Channeler's Armlets

Complex arcane geometries that accelerate the flow of aether within the body are embroidered into these loose armlets, reducing the time required for the summoner.

Channeler's Vest

This daring vest protects only the heart, leaving the upper arms and stomach exposed. The dearth of fabric makes it impossible to stitch arcane geometries as one might on a robe, so the arcanist compensates by painting one on his skin directly.

Form & Function

Any discussion of summoner equipment must needs begin with their signature horned headpieces. The horn serves as a conduit for the summoner to convey nonverbal direction to his egi, but some scholars also believe that it would have been worn as a status symbol in the days of the Allagan Empire, as it was tangible proof that one had overcome an eikon. Aside from the horn, summoner garments resemble those of other mages, lengthy and sweeping—though they are unique in leaving some portions of skin uncovered. Y’mhitra of the Sons of Saint Coinach asserts that this preference is in fact practical, enabling the summoner to better absorb the essences of the primals he confronts. And while gaps in one’s raiments do reduce overall defense, it could be argued those who dedicate themselves to harnessing primals' power for their own are not, at any rate, innately inclined to an excess of caution.[3]

  • In patch 6.0, this job was entirely reworked to greatly streamline its rotation, introduce a cycle of summoning different familiars, and remove its damage-over-time spells. Prior to the rework, the Egis were permanent pets that were generally not cycled: Ifrit for single-target damage, Garuda for AoE damage, and Titan (rarely used) to increase one's defenses and spawn persistent ground AoEs.
  • Prior to patch 5.0, the egis were targetable and had their own HP. Titan-egi's original purpose was to act as a tank for the Summoner.
