Beastmaster

Long has mankind held in wary fascination the creatures that freely roam the wilds. At times formidable threats, at times reliable allies, beasts have been amply studied and their uses tested in all corners of the world.
Such research steadily developed into unique traditions that define what it means to master a beast─be it borrowing its power, summoning its soul, wielding it as a weapon, or fighting alongside it. Among these traditions exist the Kornago, who value the emotional and spiritual bonds between a practitioner and their bestial familiars.
Beastmaster (BST) is a limited job introduced in patch 7.56 of the Dawntrail expansion. After
blue mage, it is the second limited job to be added. Beastmaster is classified as a
melee DPS but cannot use role actions.
This job is solo-gameplay oriented, although players may also form parties for leveling or capturing beasts. Players may capture up to 50 different wild beasts from the overworld or certain instanced duties. In combat, players may summon one beast and swap between three. Each beast has three different actions, allowing players to customize their rotation based on the beasts they choose. Regardless of what beasts are used, the general play style of beastmaster is to execute chains of increasingly powerful combos by synergizing with their beasts.
Beastmaster starts at level 1 and has a level cap of 50. At level 30, beastmasters can unlock the Crucible of the Unbroken, a series of solo roguelike combat challenges that provide a variety of rewards, including gear upgrades.
General information
Guild
Unlock
- Complete the quest: Strangers in the Wood
- Requirement: Level 50 Disciple of War or Magic
- Starting NPC: Excited Adventurer in New Gridania (X:11.8, Y:13.6)
- Prerequisite Quest: Players must first complete the Main Scenario Quest The Ultimate Weapon.
- Players must also have the Dawntrail expansion registered on their service account.
Equipment
The beastmaster is a disciple of war and equips striking armor and slaying accessories. Beastmasters use one-handed axes as weapons and shields in the off-hand slot. The shields that beastmaster can equip are either specific for the job or include shields that are not exclusive to
gladiator or
paladin.
Beastmaster also has job-specific armor sets and an accessory. The level 50 armor set is upgradeable and provides stat bonuses in the Crucible of the Unbroken.
Stats
Beastmaster uses strength as their main attribute.
Leveling
Beastmasters gain greater EXP from completing FATEs than other jobs do. However, unlike blue mage, no bonuses are granted from defeating enemies in the overworld.
Beastmaster also gains experience from capturing beasts and completing boards in the Crucible of the Unbroken.
Beastmaster's job quests serve as a tutorial for the job and do not unlock new actions, unlike most other job questlines. In addition, instead of there being a quest every 5 levels as in many other jobs, new quests become available at levels where the beastmaster learns new actions that enhance their rotation. Completing job quests will also reward the player with beastmaster gear.

Job mechanics
Capturing beasts
- Use Gauge to determine whether an enemy can be captured and the difficulty of doing so. The enemy must be a lower or equal level than the beastmaster for the capture to succeed. The higher the player's level is relative to the enemy, the greater chance of success.
- Use Capture to apply a debuff, then KO the enemy when the debuff is in effect. Enemies that have lower HP prior to using Capture will have a greater chance of being caught.
- The beast will be recorded in the Master's Bestiary if the player was successful.
- In a party, all beastmasters will be eligible to catch a given enemy provided they meet level requirements. The success rate is independent for each player.
- Players may use an Unrestricted Party (unsynced) for instanced duties, which does not affect catch rates, unlike with blue mage spells.
- Alternatively, players may obtain Kornago Gourds by exchanging reward items from the Crucible of the Unbroken. Using these will unlock a new beast without needing to capture it. This is particularly useful for beasts obtained from high-level duties and if the player does not wish to form a party to capture beasts from them.
Assigning beasts
- Beastmaster has 3 different "battlehorn" actions, each of which can be assigned to a beast in the Master's Bestiary.
- Using a battlehorn will summon the beast.
- Players may swap between the 3 beasts they have assigned in combat. Each battlehorn has a 90 second cooldown in combat that begins once the beast withdraws from the field.
Beast actions
The following beastmaster actions have effects that change depending on the currently summoned beast.
- Trick: Learned at level 8. Command the beast to use an action that interacts with the Instinctual Combo system (see Job Gauge secion).
- Tempered Release: Learned at level 18. Command the beast to use an action specific to it. These actions vary, from attacks to buffs.
- Borrow: Learned at level 22. The beastmaster draws power from their beast to perform an action themselves. This action is available indefinitely when the beast is summoned, or for a limited period of time once the beast is desummoned.
Each beast has three actions: one Trick, one Tempered Release, and one Borrow. The effects of Trick and Tempered Release are unique per beast, while the effects of Borrow are determined by the beast's classification (beastkin, soulkin, wavekin, etc.) There are eight classes in total.
Trick and Tempered Release also require the "One with Nature" buff to be used, which is granted upon using a battlehorn to summon a beast. The buff is consumed once the action is used, so player will need to choose between the two for a given summoning.
If a beast is summoned, players also may use Parting Blow, commanding the beast to use a strong AoE attack (Aetheric Burst) which will cause the beast to withdraw. Using Tempered Release or Borrow will grant the "Lingering Vantage" status, increasing the damage of Aetheric Burst.
Job Gauge
Beastmaster has three job gauges: the TP gauge, Familiar TP gauge, and instinct gauge. The TP gauges store a maximum of 250 TP. Both gauges are filled from the player's and beast's auto-attacks and from using certain actions. When each gauge has at least 100 or more, they can be consumed in their entirely using "instinctual" actions, their damage increasing the more gauge the player has.
Both the beastmaster and the beast have colored instinctual actions: yellow (eldritch), green (volant), blue (durant), and red (rampant). Using a beastmaster's instinctual action and a beast's instinctual action within 7 seconds of each other will trigger an instinctual combo for more damage. The instinct gauge will display four colors in a circle, and using colored instinctual actions going in adjacent clockwise order of the colors will result in a higher-damage combo known as an intentional combo. Successfully performing an intentional combo will cause the left half of the instinct gauge to turn white (Sunstrider) or the right half to turn black (Moonstalker). Specifically:
- Sunstrider is granted by using a green > red or blue > yellow combo.
- Moonstalker is granted by using a red > blue or yellow > green combo.
Each of these effects also last 7 seconds.
A combo performed by the beastmaster generates a Mastered Instinct stack (yellow notch), while a combo performed by the beast generates a Natural Instinct (blue notch). Longer combos will generate stacks for each hit past the first. For example, a beastmaster action > Trick > beastmaster action will generate a Natural Instinct stack on the second hit and a Mastered Instinct stack on the third.
The Instinct stacks are used for higher-level abilities that instantly fill the gauges, allowing them to connect multiple instinctual combos:
- Rally: Spends all stacks of "Mastered Instinct" (up to 3) to increase TP gauge (base 40 TP and 70 TP per stack of Mastered Instinct).
- Rallying Cheer: Spends all stacks of "Natural Instinct" (up to 3) to increase Familiar TP gauge (base 30 TP and 70 TP per stack of Natural Instinct).
The number of consecutive instinctual combos will be displayed as a number at the bottom of the instinct gauge. Performing more combos in a row will increase the damage they deal. Skillfully using instinctual actions along with Tempered Release and Borrow actions will enable the player to perform 5-7 instinctual combos in a row.
List of beasts
The Master's Bestiary (the equivalent of the Blue Magic Spellbook for beastmaster) allows players to view available beasts for capture, their locations, and their associated actions.
Beastmaster activities
Crucible of the Unbroken
The Crucible of the Unbroken is a series of solo combat challenges available for beastmasters starting at level 30 and is the primary gameplay focus of this job. Unlike the Masked Carnivale for blue mages, the Crucible has a different progression structure consisting of multiple nodes and branching paths. There are four difficulties available and seasonal leaderboards for the highest difficulty.
Like the Masked Carnivale, elemental attacks and physical damage types are relevant in the Crucible.
In addition to being required for the beastmaster job quests, rewards include gear upgrades, weapon glamours, and beast glamours.
Unlike the overworld or other instanced duties, beasts within the Crucible have HP and can take damage. Beasts also have their own stats and can level up. The player has access to two duty actions that control whether they or their beast has enmity on enemies.
Notes
Unlike blue mage, there are no achievements for completing extreme trials and savage raids with a full party of beastmasters. There is also no beastmaster equivalent for the Blue Mage Log.

Trivia
- Beastmaster was designed by Masaki Nakagawa (i.e. "Mr. Ozma"), the lead combat designer of FFXIV, who took over beastmaster development from a previous unknown designer.
- A pre-release Famitsu interview with Nakagawa revealed the following:[1]
- The original concept for beastmaster combat was a turn-based RPG, but this was scrapped.
- A whip was considered to be beastmaster's weapon but was scrapped due to the difficulty of animation and the symbolism that beastmasters were enslaving their beasts instead of fighting together with them. A one-handed axe also better reflected the combat of the original beastmasters introduced in the Bozja storyline.
- Beastmaster's instinctual combos are inspired by skillchains from Final Fantasy XI.
- Forgekin, voidsent, elementals, primals, and spoken cannot be tamed.
