Journal
- J'yhuh Tia looks upon you with a fond eye.
- Part of a beastmaster's duty lies in tempering her/his familiar's feral energies into calculated skills. Allowing your Cu Sith some rest, J'yhuh Tia tasks you with training an opo-opo and flying trap, so as to better harness the powers they each possess. Loosefrox offers some “hintclues” regarding where to find such beasts, and she may be persuaded to repeat herself...if necessary.
- Though decidedly different creatures, the opo-opo and flying trap you have bonded with demonstrate a clear talent in combat and willingness to be coached. J'yhuh Tia doubtless has further to share.
- Your teacher encourages you to familiarize yourself with the many beasts you befriend, developing a clear understanding of who is capable of what. Such an endeavor will take time, so you are left to study at will, that you might one day become as knowledgeable as your skeptical senior, Loosefrox.
※The continuation of this quest will be available from J'yhuh Tia upon reaching level 22.
- Your next challenge will be learning how to borrow, and properly wield, your familiars' unique aether. A beast's aetheric energy differs depending upon classification, so this time, J'yhuh Tia would have you work with a wavekin and a soulkin. Locations of viable species are begrudgingly offered by Loosefrox, who may be persuaded to repeat herself...if necessary.
- You experience firsthand the powers of both wavekin and soulkin. With your skin still tingling in a way difficult to describe, you turn to J'yhuh Tia for your performance assessment.
- Again you are interrupted, this time by eerie applause. Lauda approaches, clearly interested in your growth as a beastmaster. A grumpy Loosefrox points out that your success may well be attributed to the impotence of the striking dummies you have been practicing against. Even J'yhuh Tia concedes that a live target presents greater challenges than an inanimate one. Still, your strength has outgrown your surroundings, and just as he muses whether or not to change locales, Lauda is quick to offer her assistance. She bids you follow her into the woods, and while obeying would surely walk you straight into unknown danger, J'yhuh Tia has suspicions to confirm.
Lauda leads you to a river, whereupon she summons a magicked vessel in the shape of a mirror. This mirror, she explains, holds the trapped soul of a fiend, the body of which may be summoned forth at any time. In a flash, a mighty sea serpent towers above you, and while your teacher's face has grown terse, he encourages you to have faith in your familiars and defeat it in battle.
- The remains of the captive serpent dissipate. Though her face is dispassionate, something ominous flickers in Lauda's gaze...
- Lauda congratulates you on a battle well fought and once again speaks of her master—Guttler the Gutter. Suddenly, your Cu Sith summons itself to your side, its fangs bared and limbs braced. Lauda recoils, and from her lips spill a few words of recognition—astonishment that the Cu Sith yet lives. J'yhuh Tia demands an explanation, but Lauda's body suddenly grows limp. A malevolent aura consumes her, eyes blazing with fury. A voice rings within your ears, demanding death, your death, the death of all beastmasters. Wielding a weapon invisible to the eye, Lauda assumes a fighting stance before immediately crumpling to the ground unconscious, her blonde hair mysteriously turned to black...
- When Lauda comes to, she seems a changed woman. J'yhuh Tia once more demands answers, and she admits she is possessed by a forest guardian by the name of Guttler. The Lhu beastmasters she hails from had attempted to trap his soul within an axe, but their plans to harness his power went horribly awry, leading to their decimation. Lauda alone was spared, and only to realize Guttler's vengeance. His thirst for beastmaster blood transcends tradition, and he uses her as a puppet to lure unsuspecting practitioners into the Crucible where he can kill them. Lauda begs that you take leave of her during this fleeting moment of lucidity, insisting that she will become powerless to refuse Guttler's demands once he wakes. When you refuse, she makes the decision for you, disappearing into the woods. Gravely, J'yhuh Tia suggests you, he, and Loosefrox return to the Bannock to discuss.
- Though clearly disturbed by what he heard, J'yhuh Tia first asks after your Cu Sith. Summon it to see how it fares.
- Now you know the fate of your Cu Sith's former guardian—slain by Lauda's hand, according to Guttler's will. While J'yhuh Tia offers you the option of following Lauda's own advice, you cannot bring yourself to abandon so many souls in need. To put an end to Guttler's plan and seek justice for the beasts and beastmasters trapped against their will, you will need to face him in the Crucible of the Unbroken.
※The next beastmaster quest will be available from J'yhuh Tia upon reaching level 30.

Dialogue
Pshhh... Shkohhh... You're gritgrowing well enough. But don't let it go to your braincase!
Taking your training seriously, I see. Excellent.
Today, we explore how to temper feral urges.
By teaching your familiars how to purposefully unleash their aether, their unique talents will shine all the brighter.
A strong rapport as a mentor will strengthen your bonds, and offer a greater arsenal in combat.
Just as you have been guided by me, you must now learn to guide your charges.
Tempered Release can be executed when under the effect of One with Nature, which is granted upon summoning a familiar. You may confirm each beast's abilities via the Master's Bestiary.
Use the striking dummy—but let's give your Cu Sith a break, shall we? Try training an opo-opo and a flying trap, instead. Their differences should offer ample perspective.
Pshhh... In case you're lacking the necessary beastfriends, I'll give you a hintclue.
Opo-opos nesthome in the northeast area of the North Shroud, and I saw some roselets just south of Bentbranch Meadows. ...Those are flying traps, in case you didn't know.
Pshhh... Forgot where to find those beastfriends, already!?
Shkohhh... Since I'm nice, I'll tell you again: check the northeastern North Shroud for opo-opos and south of Bentbranch Meadows for flying traps. Roselets, remember?
Teaching may seem daunting at first, but have faith in your familiars. Help temper their techniques, that they may rise to new heights of excellence.
Tempered Release can only be executed while under the effect of One with Nature, which is granted upon summoning a familiar. Should the status effect expire, try summoning your familiar again.
Admirable work, Forename. It seems you have a knack for teaching.
Every creature offers something different. You must deeply understand your familiars to guide them true.
Only then will you be half the beastmaster that I am! I know how all my beastfriends fight and the best ways to support each other.
Heh. The only way you'll outstrip Loosefrox is by memorizing a filled bestiary from beginning to end.
Practical application of said memory notwithstanding. Work at your own pace and style, then come and find me when you're ready.
The continuation of this quest will be available from J'yhuh Tia upon reaching level 22.
Pshhh... Shkohhh... One day we'll see who's the better beastmaster. One day.
I appreciate your eagerness, Forename. But progress requires patience.
Coming along nicely, I see. Let us resume.
The Kornago tradition is rooted in the trust cultivated between beast and practitioner. Nothing demonstrates this better than the gifts bestowed upon a beastmaster by their charges.
Any transfer of aether is significant—and in this case, your familiar will lend you power to wield at will.
The classification of a beast determines how its aether will affect you. Wavekin will offer different boons than soulkin, for example.
See for yourself, with the striking dummy. Have wavekin and soulkin familiars lend you strength, and you'll understand my meaning.
Borrow can only be used while under the effect of One with Nature, which is granted upon summoning a familiar.
Using Borrow will grant you an effect based on your summoned familiar's classification. Furthermore, Beast Mode will change into another action.
Wavekin will change Beast Mode to Quelling Wave, while soulkin will change it to Soul Crush. Execute both of these skills against the striking dummy.
One with Nature will expire upon executing either Tempered Release or Borrow. It may be reapplied by summoning another familiar.
If you're lacking beastfriends, here's another gracious hintclue: pugils are wavekin that nesthome in middle La Noscea, and coblyns are soulkin that nesthome in western Thanalan. Best wishes.
See what you make of borrowing aether from wavekin and soulkin. Be sure to ask nicely.

Pshhh...! Wavekin pugils in middle La Noscea! Soulkin coblyns in western Thanalan! Go!
Well asked and gracefully received! Nicely done, Forename.
Pshhh... You were fine, I suppose...
...It seems we had an audience.
Remarkable. You are quite the talented beastmaster.
Shkohhh... Against a dumbstrike. Maybe.
Inanimate targets do not offer the same challenge as live ones, true. But pitting Forename against local wildlife would be savagery, given her/his current strength. ...Perhaps it is high time we switched locales.
There is no need for such drastic measures. Allow me to provide assistance.
If you would but follow me a short distance.
...They say curiosity killed the coeurl, but Cœur and I have long been rewarded by ours. Humor me a hunch, and let's see where this takes us.
I trust your thinkgut, Wiseteach. Just not fairmaids leading us into deepwoods...
...So? Where's the helphand you offered?
I shall summon it forthwith.
In accordance with our tradition, Lhu beastmasters wield magicked vessels imbued with the souls of slain beasts.
This mirror is one such vessel. One need only call the spirit forth...
...to manifest a shade of the flesh.
A-A sea serpent!?
......
This beast should provide a worthy opponent. You need not debase yourself with...“savagery.”
You are its equal. Remember your training. The bonds with your familiars.
Sea serpents use deadly magicks—summon a soulkin, borrow your beastfriend's aether, and stop that snake from casting!
Have no fear. Together, with your familiars, you will overcome this.
Like I said, summon a soulkin beastfriend and borrow its aether to fight that sea serpent. ...Or don't!
...At your leisure.
Valiantly fought, Forename.
Pshhh... I-I knew you'd be fine. Shkohhh...
Wonderful. Simply wonderful.
How joyous my master would be to face your likeness in the Crucible...
Pray tell... Who is this master of yours, exactly?
Guttler the Gutter. As for who he is...
Pshhh...! Forename, your battlehorn is jiggleshaking!
What's it responding to? “Master”? “Guttler”?
Ghhhrrrrrrrrrlllllllll!
...!?
It can't be... The Cu Sith...survived!?
What!? Explain yourself, now!
No... I... I-I......
...am come...for your souls. Beastmasters.
Th-That voice! Rattling inside my braincase...
Die...for me...
Perish...like the plague you are!
Grrrggghhh!
...The hells is going on here?
Ghhhrrrlll...
...Friend or foe, we can't leave her. Let's get her up and have some answers.
Like I once said, a short nap can do wonders for an ill temper. ...Although I've never seen a nap change hair color before.
Pshhh... Shkohhh... What came over her? And why's her hair dark now?
You...aided me?
You were in need. Now, if you would be so kind as to explain what had you speaking in tongues.
...I am possessed. By the beast called Guttler, my...my master.
He must exert great effort to control my physical body. Which is why he now rests, and why I am returned.
When he wakes, I am but a loyal pawn. My mind exists for his purposes alone. None can overcome him, beast of legend that he is...
Beast of legend... You can't mean...a behemoth!?
So they are called in Eorzea. But Guttler himself is extraordinary.
Amongst my people, it is said that he has weathered a thousand winters and more.
Then he is one who has overcome the very limitations of his existence. A creature whose wisdom surpasses mastery of our common tongue.
Indeed. Guttler is a being of remarkable might and intelligence. Once, he was even revered as a forest guardian.
...Until my people, beastmasters of the Lhu, came to covet his power. We struck him down.
Sealed his soul into one of your magicked vessels, did you?
...Into an axe. It was a cowardly trap, but it worked. In all appearances.
You should have seen my father... Leader of the Lhu, master of a beast lauded as a deity... The spitting image of pride before the fall.
For Guttler's soul revolted. It raged. The wielder of the axe became wielded, and with his own hand, my father... Possessed by the very beast he captured, he turned on his people and...
...You don't need to say.
I alone was spared. Shown mercy by Guttler's insatiable soul.
My father's husk was tossed aside, and I was taught to kneel.
...You've confirmed my hunch, then. My colleague who researched the Lhu for me reported that they had been annihilated.
Would not destroying the axe release Guttler's soul? Performing rites for the deceased...anything to offer respite for the both of you?
All I have tried has been in vain. It was my father, my people, who felled a god in our greed.
My remorse was the fertile ground upon which Guttler sowed his magicks...and the innocent blood we spilt has only quickened our pact.
Innocent blood...the Cu Sith's former guardian, I take it?
Guttler desires vengeance upon all beastmasters, regardless of tradition. Under his control, I live to perpetuate his feud.
I was meant to lure you into the Crucible of the Unbroken, that Guttler might slay you. You must flee now, while you have the chance. While I am still myself...
What will you say?
My Cu Sith deserves closure.
I will not flee. Not like this.
Why go to such lengths? That man, the former owner...he was neither your kith nor kin.
...Please. I will be helpless to stop Guttler once he wakes. Reconsider, and may we never meet again.
...Let us return to the Bannock. Clearly, we have much to discuss.
Pshhh... Shkohhh... I don't like this... I don't like this at all...
That was...revelatory, to say the least.
But first, our attention is owed to your Cu Sith. I can only imagine how it must feel.
Summon it, so that we might offer our support.
I'm worried for your Cu Sith. Summon it, won't you?
Being forced to relive such awful memories... That must have been a torment. You were very brave, little one.
Ghhhn...
Let us try and piece together Lauda's story.
The soul of an indomitable beast—Guttler the Gutter, as she called him—has been sealed inside an axe, subjecting her to his control.
Pshhh... Shkohhh... And Guttler wants paidblood from all beastmasters...
To that end, he forces Lauda to lure our kind into that Crucible of hers...a place where he seems at liberty to fight us.
Facing him would mean a fight to the death. ...Or worse.
All living creatures return to the aetherial sea. Beast and mankind, we are equals upon the journey of life and death.
But the Lhu beastmasters distorted the cycle. They imprisoned souls of the departed to wield as faithful servants.
A forest guardian like Guttler would not soon forgive such a desecration of nature's will.
This Cu Sith's former keeper...his soul is trapstuck, isn't it?
Quite likely. Guttler seems keen on giving beastmasters a taste of their own cruelty.
Ghhhnnn...
Fleeing is not always cowardice, Forename. Distancing yourself from Lauda for the sake of your Cu Sith would be a fair decision, and I would not think less of you for it.
The choice is yours.
What will you say?
We will stop Guttler. Together.
Let's free those trapped souls.
Ghhhrrrlll!
I had a feeling you'd say that. You have our full support, Forename.
I'm supporting the Cu Sith. You can fend for yourself!
Our work is cut out for us—but our goal is clear. Rest assured that you will be fully equipped to challenge the Crucible of the Unbroken when the time comes.
