Crucible of the Unbroken

The Crucible of the Unbroken is a series of solo roguelike combat challenges available for beastmasters, themed after a tabletop game. Initially unlocked at level 30, there are four difficulties available (a story-mode and three challenge-mode difficulties) and leaderboards for the highest difficulty. Aside from capturing beasts, the crucible is the primary gameplay element of beastmasters.

In addition to being required for the beastmaster job quests past level 30, rewards include various cosmetic items, gear upgrades, beast glamours, and Kornago Gourds. This content can also be used for leveling both beastmaster and their pets.

Mechanics

  • Players may prepare a roster of 10-15 beasts prior to entering the duty, but only three can be taken into a given battle, and only one can be summoned at once.
  • Each beast has their own level (rank) and attributes in the Crucible. Unlike in the overworld, beasts also have HP and can take damage. Leveling up beasts will increase their attributes (e.g. maximum HP, physical attack/defense, magical attack/defense). The maximum rank of each beast is 25.
  • The Crucible map consists of a series of nodes with branching paths. Each node may have a battle, a reward item the player can choose, or a rest area to restore HP. There are nearly 50 unique battle encounters.
  • HP of the player and their pets will not be automatically restored upon completing a battle, only from using consumable items, certain actions, or from a rest node. Players may only choose a limited number of beasts to restore HP in a rest node.
  • Players will obtain consumable items and equipment that are useful in combat. They have various effects, such as enhancing attributes or reviving the player upon death. These consumables and equipment are lost after the run.
  • Players will also earn an in-duty currency (Territory Tokens) that can be used to purchase food for their pets to enhance their stats within a run. Each pet has a different capacity for how much food can be used. All food effects are lost if the beast is rested at a rest node. In addition, duplicate food items may not be fed to a beast.
  • Elemental attacks, physical damage types, and status effect resistances are relevant in the Crucible, so players will need to choose the appropriate team of beasts based on the encounter. Battles will test the player's synergy with their beasts along with standard encounter mechanics (e.g. reacting to cast bar names and animations to avoid AoEs).
  • The player has access to two duty actions that determine whether they or their current beast has enmity on enemies, which can be used to divert strong enemy attacks:
    • Challenge: The beastmaster obtains top enmity.
    • Snarl: The beast obtains top enmity and takes all damage intended for the beastmaster.

Boards

There are five boards currently available. The first three boards are required for the beastmaster job quests. The last two boards are optional.

Board Level Item Level Sync Max Roster Map Unlock
First Board of the Unbroken 30 - 10 Into the Crucible
Second Board of the Unbroken 40 - Gobsmacked
Third Board of the Unbroken 50 100 A Beastmaster's Path
First Master's Board 50 120 Free for All
Second Master's Board 50 135 Mastery Rematch

Difficulties

Once the player clears the Second Master's Board and completes Blazing Trails, they will unlock additional difficulty options per board: First Degree, Second Degree, and Third Degree, in increasing difficulty. Playing on a higher difficulty will increase the HP and damage done by enemies.

Rankings

The highest difficulty (Third Degree) contains a seasonal leaderboard where the top 300 players per region (North America, Japan, etc.) will earn rewards, such as an exclusive rainbow golem mount. The first ranking period will begin two weeks after the release of patch 7.56 and last until the release of patch 7.58. The mount is also obtainable from subsequent ranking periods after the first.[1]
