Prerequisites
Before beginning to create a Phantom Weapon Obscurum, players must:
- complete a Phantom Weapon Umbrae from the quest
Wrought by Hands Phantasmal - reach level 100 for your chosen job as a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic.
- Speak with Gerolt.
- Speak with the expedition archaeologist.
- Speak with Gerolt.
- Deliver the requested items to Gerolt.
- Obtain a sack of Umbral Clay.
- Obtain a lump of Aspected Aether Agglomerate.
- Obtain a lump of Aspected Aetheroconductor.
- Obtain a lump of Aspected Aetherocatalyst.
- Speak with Gerolt.
- Umbral Clay is purchased from Goplu in Tuliyollal (X:13.1, Y:12.7) for
500,000 gil.
The Aspected Aether items are level 100 crafts, with the recipes requiring Master Recipe Tomes XII.
- All recipes require Levinchrome Aethersand, which can be bought with
Orange Gatherers' Scrips or
Cosmocredits, or obtained through Aetherial Reduction. - The remaining materials come from timed nodes that require Tomes of Regional Folklore. Botanist needs its Yok Tural and Alexandria books, while Miner needs its Xak Tural and Alexandria books. These items require at least 5,090 Perception to gather them.
- Aspected Aether Agglomerate is made by
Carpenter,
Leatherworker, or
Weaver. - Aspected Aetheroconductor is made by
Blacksmith,
Armorer, or
Goldsmith. - Aspected Aetherocatalyst is made by
Alchemist or
Culinarian. - Even though there is no High-quality version of these crafts, they must be completed with a nearly full quality bar (at least 14200/14204 quality), or else the craft will fail.
- 5620 Craftsmanship and 5080 Control are required in order to attempt to craft the items.
- Teamcraft's 7.4 budget meld set (5635 Craftsmanship, 4969 Control, 583 CP) plus high-quality All i Pebre and high-quality Cunning Craftsman's Tisane can macro these crafts with about 98% success using a macro from Raphael.
- The high-tier meldset (even with just a Stellar main-hand tool and one CP meld on the offhand tool) can macro it with 100% success using just high-quality Rroneek Steak and no Tisane.
Alternatively, since all of the required items are tradable, they can be bought off the Market Board.
- Deliver Crystal Paste to Gerolt.
- Deliver Crystal Paste to Gerolt once more.
- Deliver Crystal Paste to Gerolt for a third time.
- Deliver Crystal Paste to Gerolt for a fourth time.
This step requires collecting a total of 1,200 Crystal Paste, split into four stages: 100 paste, then 200, 300, and finally 600. You can collect Crystal Paste without needing to equip the relic, queue as a level 100 job, or use the same job that accepted the quest.
The Crystal Paste is an stackable item that is stored in your regular inventory, so you can simply obtain 1,200 units then turn them in sequentially. You do not need to do the turn-ins as soon as the thresholds are met, because there is no danger of "overcapping."
While
In Pursuit of Perfection is accepted, Crystal Paste can be collected from various duties:
Based on this data, efficient options are:
Duty Roulette: Leveling with a high-DPS premade party
Pilgrim's Traverse Stones 71+ with an efficient premade party.
The Merchant's Tale is also efficient, especially because players must run it at least 13 times to receive all the rewards from the dungeon.
Notably, Occult Crescent is one of the least efficient methods for this step.
- Purchase 3 Waning Arcanite from Ermina in Phantom Village (X:6.9, Y:7.3). Each costs
500 Allagan Tomestones of Mathematics, or 1,500 tomestones total. - With the [Corresponding Phantom Weapon Umbrae] in your inventory or Armoury Chest, deliver the chunks of waning arcanite to Dodokkuli.
This quest consists only of buying the Waning Arcanite and trading those for the desired Phantom Weapon Obscurum. Like the prior tomestone exchange for arcanite, players also need to exchange the corresponding Phantom Weapon Umbrae. All other weapons can thereafter be acquired in the same way, without needing to accept a repeatable quest.

Trivia
- "Clare Obscurum" in the achievement names of the relic weapons is likely in reference to a variant spelling of the French term clair-obscur, another word for chiaroscuro[1] .
- Chiaroscuro is "pictorial representation in terms of light and shade without regard to color"[2].
- This is in line with the naming of the previous two steps featuring light and shadow, Penumbrae (a space of partial illumination between the perfect shadow on all sides and the full light[3]) and Umbrae (a conical shadow excluding all light from a given source[4]).
- Given the timing of the patch's release in January 2026 the names of the achievements could possibly reference the 2025 role-playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as it had recently won several awards.
