Mount Guide from Character menu

No adventurer should set out into the wilds without a trusty mount. In addition to the ever-popular chocobo, Eorzea is home to a number of other peculiar creatures which may serve as trusty steeds.

A Realm Reborn Promotional Website

Mounts allow players to travel faster on land, in the air, and underwater. Main scenario progression and riding maps can further increase mount speed on land. After unlocking a mount, it can be summoned by dragging the icon on the action bar and clicking the icon.

Players begin the process of acquiring their first mount, the Company Chocobo, by completing the level 20 main story quest A Hero in the Making and then completing the next two Main Scenario Quests by joining a Grand Company. Players must then also complete the quest My Little Chocobo given by an NPC located within their Grand Company headquarters. Other mounts can be unlocked by meeting different requirements, but they cannot be ridden until the Company Chocobo is unlocked.

Heavensward, FFXIV's first expansion, introduced Flying Mounts. Stormblood, the next expansion, allowed these mounts to dive into bodies of water. Since Shadowbringers, all mounts can fly and dive.

Enemies can still attack mounted players unless they ride a
Chocobo Porter.

Unlike many other actions with a casting time that require players to stand still, players may freely move while summoning their mount, as of Patch 7.2.

When mounts were originally added to Legacy in Patch 1.19, there was only the personal chocobo, and players had to retain and use the chocobo whistle from their inventory in order to be able to summon the mount. There was no Mount Guide until Patch 2.0, and this is why the mount summoning animation still uses the summoning item even though the player no longer keeps them.

Mount Actions

Some mounts have special actions that are assigned to the pet hotbar when mounted. These actions generally do not have any effect on normal gameplay but are required to complete some quests. For example, Electric Flux is required to complete Guardians of the Galaxy.

By default, Mount Actions will replace hotbar 1 when mounted. This behavior may be altered in Character Configuration → Hotbar Settings → Display → Automatically replace hotbar 1 with pet hotbar when mounted (near the bottom of the options list under Pet Hotbar Display Settings).

Riding Pillion

How to ride pillion

Some mounts allow multiple people in the same party to ride a single party member's mount. To ride pillion, target the party member that is mounted, open the Target submenu (right-click on mouse/keyboard), select "Ride Pillion", and select the seat number.

Alternatively, the following macro may be used to place a character into the nearest party member's multi-seat mount using the /ridepillion command. [1]

/micon "Regalia Type-G" mount /tpc /ridepillion <t> 2

Party members cannot ride pillion into zones they have not yet unlocked. Furthermore, riding pillion is disabled in PvP.

Flying

Players unlock the ability to fly on any of their mounts after completing The Ultimate Weapon. While flying, the flying mounts have twice of the speed of a regular ground mount, which can make it easy to escape enemies. While running grounded, the flying mounts will be the same speed as a ground mount.

For A Realm Reborn zones it will be possible to fly as soon as the capability is unlocked, but before flying in an expansion zone players will need to attune with the Aether Currents in that zone. Players can check their attunement progress through the Aether Currents window under Travel in the main menu. Some Aether Currents are found in the zone while others are obtained by completing quests. Players are provided with an Aether Compass to aid them in their search.

History

Flying mounts were introduced in Heavensward, revealed at the Fan Festival in London 2014. At the time, many of the previous ground mounts such as the Company Chocobo had flying enabled, and flying mounts allowed the players to take to the sky and roam the areas of Heavensward freely. By the release of Shadowbringers and Patch 5.0, all mounts have been enabled for flight, and by extension, diving. Additionally in patch 5.3, flight in A Realm Reborn zones was enabled for the first time. At the same time, the ability to fly became awarded on immediate completion of The Ultimate Weapon, and the old flight-unlock quest for the chocobo I Believe I Can Fly was removed.

To dive on a mount, press the Descend keybind as shown above, or fly down into the water at a steep angle. To surface, hold the Ascend button. or fly up out of the water at a steep angle.

While Aether Currents are not required to ride a mount while submerged, surfacing will forcibly dismount a character in areas without all Aether Currents unlocked. Submerging will be necessary in order to ride a mount again.

Lore

Mounts

Large beasts have long been employed in agriculture and transport. In Eorzea, for instance, the domesticated chocobo was first put to use pulling carts. Following adjustments to the vehicles for comfort and safety, the precursor to the modern chocobo carriage was born and, their importance to overground transport thus established, it was only a matter of time until chocobos found their place pulling chariots on the battlefield.

By contrast, the peoples of the Azim Steppe in Othard initially developed techniques to ride on the backs of their own domesticated beasts: horses. These came into use throughout the east as tools such as bridles, reins, and saddles made horseback riding increasingly accessible. Knowledge of these techniques also made its way to the west, where they were adapted for use on chocoback. Mankind is still building on them to this day, developing means to harness ever more creatures as mounts.

With the help of these beasts, man is able to reach higher speeds than ever he could on his own two feet. This has contributed to the expansion of trade and increased the rate at which information spreads exponentially.

Flying Mounts

As the use of chocobos and horses became ever more widespread, various peoples began seeking out new avenues to employ their riding techniques. In the majority of cases, they looked no further than the terrestrial, but some few set their sights on the skies. An early success came from the Azim Steppe, with the taming of yols. At the time, however, the steppe’s tribes could only capture wild yols for riding; they failed to breed them for domestication.

Other examples included black chocobos and falcons. Curiously, in neither of these cases were flying creatures domesticated—rather, already domesticated species were bred until they developed the desired traits. Falcons were bred over the course of many generations to become larger versions of already extant domestic birds of prey, while various magicks were employed on black chocobos to reawaken their latent capacity for flight. It is simple even for the layperson to imagine the amount of labor and time that either result must have necessitated.

In any case, mankind did eventually achieve the means to take to the sky. Airborne mounts widened man’s sphere of activity considerably, and irrevocably altered the rules of warfare. Nevertheless, at no point did they ever wholly replace horses and flightless chocobos, which are at once hardier, longer-lived, and easier to breed. Until the use of flying mounts becomes less costly by comparison, their employment will remain limited.

A particular clan in the Far East that specializes in breeding and training falcons has grown independently wealthy over the years by leveraging this expertise to form contracts with local lieges.

Parietal art discovered on the Azim Steppe. Experts place its creation sometime around the Fourth Astral Era, yet it is only partially preserved. Also of note is the absence of sheep, which would not yet have been introduced to the steppe at the time.

Encyclopaedia Eorzea: Volume II, page 195

Since flight was added to all mounts in patch 5.0 for player convenience, researchers in Labyrinthos have begun investigating the origin of flight in seemingly flightless creatures, as revealed in the Custom Deliveries questline for Margrat. One hypothesis states that all subjects had "ancestral levitational predisposition." The Fatter Cat is used as an early test subject.
