Status Resistances
Status Resistances were a set of Attributes originally introduced with Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 (although the concept itself was introduced in and carried over from Final Fantasy XI). Increasing an status resistance attribute would decrease the duration (or damage, in some cases) of the corresponding status effects inflicted. The eight status effects that could be guarded against were Slow, Silence, Blind, Poison, Stun, Sleep, Bind, and Heavy.
Theoretically, a character could have increased these attributes to decrease the duration of a particularly devastating status effect as had been done in Final Fantasy XI; for example, Poison resistance could be increased to limit duration and thus damage from a potent DoT. However, few methods were available to alter these attributes.
The only way to semi-permanently increase these attributes was to meld Status Resistance materia. In practice, this was rarely done because doing so would mean passing up materia that would have a far greater impact in terms of damage dealt. Many of these ailments, such as Silence or Sleep, already had short durations, making the marginal reduction offered by resistance effectively pointless for PvE. Moreover, in many cases, they could be cleansed outright with Esuna, rendering resistance largely redundant.
The crowd control meals, medicines, and materia were originally intended to be geared towards PvP (having been introduced at the same time in patch 2.1). However, PvP proved impossible to balance when using the same job actions as PvE, so the overhaul in Patch 4.0 completely changed the paradigm, adding a totally separate set of PvP-exclusive actions. At the same time, Attributes for PvP became fixed, with all characters synced to level 30. With that, the status resistances lost their original purpose.
As most PvE encounters never made use of these attributes in any meaningful way, and character progression was tied to increasing Item Level rather than sidegrades, these attributes were removed from the Character page and status materia was stripped of any stat bonuses in Patch 4.2.
Vestiges of these attributes still remain though Buffs and Status effects. These are only used as a mechanic to shield against enemy attacks or increase incoming damage from certain attacks. For example, Honey B. Lovely will inflict
Poison Resistance Down II with her Drop of Venom or Splash of Venom attacks, which will cause overlapping these AoEs to be lethal.
