Status effects
Status effects, also known as buffs and debuffs, are effects that can be applied to players or hostile creatures which have a beneficial or adverse impact on their combat capabilities, respectively. How these statuses are applied, how long they last, and in some cases how potent they are vary depending on the source of the status. For debuffs with a duration some of them can be removed using abilities such as Esuna, or occasionally, environmentally as part of the fight. Debuffs that are cleansable with Esuna will be indicated with a white line at the top of the debuff icon.
All buff icons are flat on the bottom and pointed on the top, while all debuff icons are flat on the top and pointed on the bottom. Status effects that indicate an action selected, such as Phantom Job actions or PvP Role Actions, are rectangular.
Player characters are limited to a combined (buffs and debuffs) total of 30 status effects affecting their character. In practice, this limit is rarely encountered, except in certain battles featuring intensive mechanics enforced by status effects such as The Omega Protocol (Ultimate). Any effects exceeding this cap will be indicated by flying text stating the status effect "has no effect on" the character.
