Walkthrough

This is a long quest; allocate 40 minutes from the beginning of the cutscene with Zoraal Ja to the end of the fight with Gwyddrud.

This quest has a solo instance that consists of three stages. If you die in any stage, you will restart from the beginning of the stage.

Stage 1

You will be accompanied by Wuk Lamat, Sphene, and Alisaie. After Sphene removes debris in the path, defeat the Everkeep Sentries G10 and Everkeep Aerostats. Head north, and Sphene will restore the bridge. Defeat the Tamed Woolback and Tamed Cauahepyas, followed by two Tamed Alexandrian Axe Beaks. Continue walking north to the Aetheryte. Talk to the two Distraught Evacuees. Walk east to the blue barrier, which will disappear after some dialogue. Destroy the Everkeep Sentries G10 and Everkeep Aerostats, followed by the Everkeep Sentries R10. Afterwards, a cutscene will play and the next stage will begin.

You will be accompanied by Wuk Lamat and Alisaie.

First, destroy the Everkeep Sentries G10 and Everkeep Aerostats. Otis will then enter the arena and become targetable.

  • Formation Alpha: Summons four untargetable Everkeep Aerostats at the intercardinals. Otis and the adds will each use a telegraphed point-blank AoE (Searing Slash), while the player and their allies will be given a spread AoE marker (Bastion Breaker) dealiing magical damage.
  • The adds will become targetable and should be defeated.
  • Stormlit Shockwave: Unavoidable magical damage from Otis.
  • Formation Beta: Summons multiple untargetable Everkeep Turrets that will face opposing directions, as indicated by the orange arrows, indicating line AoEs in the direction they are facing. The boss will use Searing Slash while one ally will receive a stack marker (Holy Blade).
  • The turrets will become targetable and should be defeated.
  • Steadfast Will: Telegraphed physical tankbuster.
  • Formation Gamma: Summons a line of eight untargetable Everkeep Sentries R10 at the north, which will sequentially telegraph line AoEs that converge to the middle. These are combined with another Searing Slash from Otis.
  • The sentries will become targetable and should be defeated.
  • Valorous Ascension: Unavoidable high magical damage from Otis.
  • Searing Slash: Now spawns a point-blank AoE telegraphs and conal AoEs around Otis, followed by another set of conal AoEs in the previously empty spots.
  • The battle will conclude once Otis reaches ~40% HP. After a cutscene, the next stage will begin.

Stage 3: Gwyddrud

You will be accompanied by Wuk Lamat, Alisaie, and Otis Oathmender.

  • Crackling Howl: Unavoidable magical damage.
  • Violet Voltage: The boss will telegraph three successive 180 degree cleaves in different directions, then use them. Later usages will have four cleaves.
  • Gnaw: Telegraphed physical tankbuster.
  • Rolling Thunder: The boss will successively spawn multiple conal AoEs that will resolve when the white area touches the wall.
  • The boss will become untargetable and several targetable Balls of Levin spawn, then slowly move towards the boss. If they touch the boss, they will increase the Gwyddrud's Power gauge by 5. The player should destroy as many orbs as possible, focusing on ones that their allies are not hitting.
  • Otis will use a roomwide AoE that will destroy all current orbs, although another set will spawn. It is not possible to destroy all the orbs, so the gauge will fill. The player and their allies will be stunned and take heavy damage from multiple successive circle AoEs, but Otis will generate a shield from this attack after a short cutscene.
  • The player should now defeat the boss before Otis's Condition reaches 0. During this, there will be multiple circle AoE telegraphs and spread markers (Untamed Current) on the player and their allies, along with stack AoEs.

Steps

Journal

  • Wuk Lamat has a request to make before setting off to confront Zoraal Ja.
  • Zoraal Ja is on the move once more, marching on Vanguard ahead of a second invasion of Tuliyollal, and you accompany Wuk Lamat as she confronts her brother. As their duel unfolds, the King of Resolve reveals that it is in fact the Queen of Reason who has orchestrated the attacks in order to plunder life force for her people. When Sphene personally appears to confirm the disturbing claim, Zoraal Ja unceremoniously cuts her down, thereby exposing that she is an illusion projected upon a mechanical soldier.
    • As the battle continues to unfold, Wuk Lamat divests Zoraal Ja of his advantage by destroying his regulator, but he responds by unleashing his war fleet on Tuliyollal. However, his forces are ultimately repelled, prompting him to take drastic measures. Having cut down his own aide for another regulator, he gives the order for all civilians in Everkeep to be executed for their souls, leaving Sphene horrified. It is at that moment that Gulool Ja unexpectedly appears to plead with his father, but Zoraal Ja takes him hostage and places Otis under his thrall. The king then flees, but not before challenging Wuk Lamat to come to the summit of Everkeep, there to settle matters once and for all.
  • Knowing that her brother cares not for others' lives, Wuk Lamat fears the worst for the civilians. So it is that you hasten back to Everkeep, braced for a grueling struggle with Zoraal Ja's mechanical army.
  • Upon entering Solution Nine, you are greeted with scenes of unspeakable carnage as mechanical soldiers carry out their orders with cold efficiency. In spite of Sphene's crimes, Wuk Lamat offers to help her protect her people, and together you make your way through the district to deal with rampant machines and fiends alike. At length you encounter Otis, who remains under Zoraal Ja's control, and are forced to fight him. Sphene's fervent plea awakens the old knight just in time for him to save her from a marauding fiend, and together you succeed in defeating your fearsome foe. Sadly, the exertion proves too much for Otis's aging frame and he ceases to function, having valiantly protected his queen.
  • Thanks to your intervention, the carnage has been brought to an end with Solution Nine being spared the worst. Cahciua asks that you help treat the wounded, and you and your comrades regroup in preparation for the relief effort.
  • Wuk Lamat cannot hide her fury at Zoraal Ja for slaughtering his own citizens, nor her confusion as to why he would commit such an atrocity. But now is not the time to ponder such questions, for there are people are in need of help.

Cutscene NPCs

Dialogue

Lamaty'i is right. Let's have faith in everyone and do what we can.
Upon speaking with Wuk Lamat, several cutscenes will play in sequence.
It is recommended that you set aside sufficient time to view these scenes in their entirety.
Before we get going, I have a request to make of you.
When we confront Zoraal Ja, you must let me face him alone.
What!? No, that's far too dangerous! Why put you at such risk if we don't have to?
We have two priorities.
The first is to hold Zoraal Ja within the dome and protect Tuliyollal.
The second is to free Wayakkwe if she's been captured.
To make sure we succeed, I need to play the worthy foe for Zoraal Ja.
If I come at him with help, he'll likely lose interest and proceed with his attack on the city. That's why it needs to be a duel.
Even if Tuliyollal is better prepared this time, it's true that it would be best to avoid another battle. And failing that, we might at least weaken Zoraal Ja...
Rest assured I'm not going into this without a strategy. Our time in the dome has given us invaluable insights into Alexandrian culture.
The use of regulators, for one. The secret to Zoraal Ja's strength.
Then you mean to...
That's right. If I destroy his regulator, he'll be unable to draw upon souls. We'll see how much he wants a duel after that.
So, will you leave Zoraal Ja to me?
What will you say?
We believe in you, Lamaty'i!
It's nothing the Vow of Resolve can't handle!
Thank you, Forename!
It's true that this is your fight, and how you choose to handle it is your decision.
But if we see you struggling, or Zoraal Ja attempts to call upon his minions, we will go to your aid!
Heh, fair enough! Knowing you'll be there, I can give it my all.
Together with Koana, I'll keep Tuliyollal safe!
That he should take his own child hostage...
We must hurry back to Everkeep!
Zoraal Ja thinks nothing of others' lives. He will kill his own people!
Chances are we'll have to face a good part of his army, with Otis among them...
Let's take all care!
Come, let's protect the people!
Are you ready, Forename?
Your progress through the battle will be saved at certain points. In the event that you are defeated, you will be able to try again from the most recent of these.
Please note that if you enter battles associated with other quests or log out from the game, this progress will be lost.
You must be a Disciple of War or Magic of level 98 or above to proceed.
Thank you, Otis... I pray your soul is at peace.
To slaughter his adopted people too... Is there no end to his villainy?
I did not expect that such carnage would unfold here...
Godsdammit... What is Zoraal Ja trying to achieve by slaughtering his own people!?
That he's still bent on surpassing Papa is clear, but why this massacre? I don't understand...
Right now we can only guess at his intent, but his obsession must be strong indeed to endure after thirty years...
But now isn't the time to ponder such things. The people need our help.

Cutscene 1

Start of voiced cutscene.
Zoraal Ja!
H-Hello!
You disappoint me, Wuk Lamat. We are foes, yet you had my admiration for defeating Father and claiming the throne.
But instead of coming for me, you gallivant with the resistance. Do I intimidate you?
I am here, Brother. I did not run, nor hide. I have come to kill you.
Let her go. Your quarrel is with me.
And will you settle it one-on-one? Or call upon all and sundry yet again?
Not that it would make any difference.
No. Like Papa did, I'll face you alone.
Really? You believe you stand a chance? Have you forgotten how it ended for Father?
I remember you couldn't win without relying on other people's souls. Alone I may be weak, but so are you!
So be it. Do not regret your decision.
Release her.
Oh, thank you!
I thought I was done for...
[LEAPING EXERT]
No you don't!
[DERISIVE SNORT “Hmph”]
Had you let her die, you could have dealt me a telling blow. Your compassion will be the end of you.
I'm not letting anyone else die!
And you—you will never surpass Papa!
But I have. With these very hands I slew him.
His body may be gone, but his spirit lives on in us!
The Yok Huy's delusion is catching, I see.
It's no delusion. Papa's love for Tuliyollal gives me strength even now!
[SWINGING AXE ROAR “Yaaargh!]
Come—let's get this over with! For my people and Sphene's!
How gullible you are. All of this is Sphene's doing.
Her objective is to harvest all life outside the barrier. Our interests happened to align, hence our alliance.
Liar! Sphene would never do that!
The King of Resolve speaks the truth.
How did she—!?
The attack on Tural was no less my desire than Zoraal Ja's.
You said you wanted none of this. It was a farce from the very start!
Yes. I used you.
So it was all just a lie, then? What you said about loving your people as family, about wanting to see them smile...
I do this for them!
For what it's worth, I'm sorry I deceived you. But I had no choice.
If I'm to save my people, I must take the lives of yours!
[SHOCKED GASP]
Behold, Wuk Lamat! The benevolent Queen Sphene.
An illusion that orchestrated a massacre.
Endless or machine, or whatever you are now, you bear the memories of the person you once were! You should still have a heart!
When you speak of slaughtering my people, do you feel nothing?
Nothing is dearer to me than my people. It matters not whether they are living or Endless.
As queen, I will do anything to protect them!
If it were you, could you have found another way? With your strength, could you have held fast to that which is dear without sacrifice?
What exactly do you seek to do? What are you protecting your people from?
You waste your words. There is no turning back.
[SLASHING WITH SWORD EXERT “Hah”]
[STRUCK BY BLOW EXERT “Ugh”]
Is this the strength that the love of Tuliyollal lends you?
A weak ruler walks a path of ruin. Tell me—which of us is worthy of their throne?
I already know...it will never be you!
As long as you think only of yourself, you'll never be worthy! You'll never surpass Father—or me!
[ANNOYED GRUNT “Hmph”]
You can't rely on souls anymore. It's over.
Don't think you've won yet. Oh no, far from it.
Give the order to the fleet: raze Tuliyollal to the ground and harvest every last soul!
It is over—for Tuliyollal. Your works, your people—all will be ash before the day is done.
Don't tell me you've forgotten? I'm not the only Dawnservant.
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 2

Start of voiced cutscene.
Th-They're coming!
[LONG, STEADYING EXHALE]
Well come on then, you tin bastards!
If I didn't know better, I'd say you're enjoying yourself.
I'm Hhetsarro. Nothing gets a hunter's blood pumping like a little danger.
Well now, it seems we have that in common. I haven't felt this alive in a good while.
[CASTING SPELL EXERT “Haaah!”]
That's the spirit! We promised Vow Koana we'd deliver him a mountain of scrap—and I'm not about to let these hollow men make a liar out of me!
Hey, kid. The ones below are yours.
You got it!
Wait... What do you mean “below”?
[LEAPING INTO THE AIR EXERT]
[LAUNCHING AT ENEMY EXERT “Haaah!”]
[IMPRESSED WHISTLING]
Don't see that every day!
Hardly sporting. And this despite our best efforts to thin the enemy ranks.
While it's not quite what we had planned, I'm glad we chose to remain in Tural.
As am I. 'Twas an unexpected but welcome opportunity to join in the defense of this realm.
And to his credit, Koana did ask very nicely. Still, it's a pity his brother had to delay our pleasure jaunt. But business always comes first.
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 3

Start of voiced cutscene.
Damn it! Come no closer, you bastards!
[LEAPING INTO THE FRAY EXERT]
[SLASHING ENEMIES EXERT “Yaaah!”]
Gehehehe!
That was a near thing. Are you all right?
Saved your life? Yes, I know. Don't squander it!
I never thought you of all people would come to my rescue, Bakool Ja Ja. Thank you.
[UNCERTAIN] Huh...
Still rings odd in my ears, the “thank you”s...
But I could get used to it.
Gehehehe!
Right, we're not done yet!
[CASTING SPELL EXERT “Hah!”]
[CHARGING ROAR “Yaaargh!”]
[SLASHING SWORD EXERT “Hah!]
[SLASHING SWORD EXERT “Yah!]
[SLASHING SWORD EXERT “Hyah!]
We're holdin' our own against their infantry, but what of that monstrosity and its escort?
If they start bombardin' us with cannon fire, we'll have no means of fightin' back!
Worry not, we have a countermeasure.
A bleedin' dragon!?
What in the Navigator's name is it doin' here?
Tuliyollal has entered into an alliance with Radz-at-Han. A wise and timely decision on Vow Koana's part.
Right in the nick... Tuliyollal shall never forget this debt.
We will hold out, Lamaty'i.
So keep your eyes forward and do what only you can do.
Finish this, and return home—safe and sound.
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 4

Start of voiced cutscene.
Report from the fleet. The enemy has offered unexpected resistance. We've been forced to withdraw.
[HEAVY SIGH]
Useless. All of you.
[CUT DOWN EXERT “Argh!”]
Y-Your Majesty...?
Enough of this! Enough!
You swore you wouldn't harm my people!
Out of my way!
[CUT DOWN EXERT “Ungh”]
Have you gone mad!?
When the army fails in its duty, it is the charge of the King of Resolve to clean up its mess.
To achieve victory by any means necessary.
Zoraal Ja to Everkeep. Initiate Code Blood.
Execute all civilians and commandeer their souls!
Damn you.
Stop!
Please, Father! Stop!
Gulool Ja! I told you not to come!
“Gulool Ja”?
You must flee, Gulool Ja! It isn't safe!
I'm not going anywhere! I have to stop my father!
I am not your father!
[CHOKED, STRUGGLING FOR BREATH “Ugh... Ungh...”]
Let him go!
Using a child as a shield!? Have you no shame!?
Release him at once, or you shall answer to me!
Pitiful relic. Kneel before your king!
Otis? What's wrong?
Find me at the top of Everkeep.
There we will determine who is fit to rule.
I must protect them...
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 5

Start of voiced cutscene.
Owww...
I have no more use for you. Begone.
Father, wait! Father!
Otis... Lamaty'i... You have to stop him... You have to...
What have you done?
Sphene! Can't you order them to stand down!?
The King of Resolve holds military authority. I cannot overrule his commands.
If there's something you can do, then do it!
Your crimes are beyond forgiveness, but your people are innocent.
[OVERWHELMED, SHARP EXHALE]
[OVERWHELMED EXHALE “Ah...”]
I deceived you all, and still...
The talk can wait. When you said that you wanted to protect your people, I trust you weren't lying?
Of course not! There's nothing I wouldn't do for them!
Then let's split up and get to work!
Do what you can do...
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 6

Start of voiced cutscene.
Looks like that does it for this area.
Look—the king's forces are on the move!
There are still civilians on True Vue!
Well, we can't leave the wounded. Let's divide into two groups.
Krile, Raha—please stay here and render aid.
The rest of us will go and deal with the machines!
Alright!
Otis! You've got to wake up!
“Otis”...?
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 7

Start of voiced cutscene.
Right, he's deactivated.
It should be safe to approach.
Otis! No!
I remember you, Otis. So please, remember yourself.
You're a proud knight of Alexandria. A man who lives to serve the kingdom and its subjects!
Otis!
Pray stand back, Your Majesty.
I am Ser Otis Velona, lord captain of the royal knights of Alexandria!
Upon mine honor, you shall harm neither my fair queen nor our citizens!
End of cutscene.

Cutscene 8

Start of voiced cutscene.
Otis...
Thank you, Lord Captain. For the delicious repast. For everything.
The old units do not have regulators. Their souls cannot be recovered.
He is gone... The Otis who so valiantly fought for us...
I'm truly grateful for your help. Would that I had the time to thank you properly...
But I'm afraid I cannot linger.
There are urgent duties I must perform.
Hey, wait!
Is everyone all right!?
We're fine, but Otis is...
So he's the one who was looking after Gulool Ja...
Thanks to you, Solution Nine has been spared the worst, but the situation on the other levels is grim.
We're currently assessing the full extent of the casualties. In the meantime, could you help us treat the wounded?
End of cutscene.
