“"Is this the will of the kami?”
The third son of a minor clan of Bukyo, the twenty-eight-year-old Shigure knew from an early age that he stood to inherit little, and so he resolved to enter government service. He lived as a ronin for some time before coming to Kugane, where he sought to join the Sekiseigumi, believing them to be stalwart defenders of the common man who served justice and punished the wicked. However, when he was turned away by the recruiters, he was forced to make ends meet by working odd jobs for an okiya's proprietress. Yet even as he supped on barley and rice porridge and pretended it was grilled fish, he continued to hold out hope for an opportunity to prove himself worthy, which came at last when the Kugane Wolf Burglar began to terrorize the merchants of the port town.
