CHALLENGE AN EMPIRE. LIBERATE A NATION. CHANGE THE WORLD.

As the future of Ivalice hangs in the balance, the mighty Arcadian Empire edges ever closer to war with its old enemy Rozarria. Lying between them, the tiny kingdom of Dalmasca celebrates a royal wedding and the promise of future prosperity...

Two years later, a dalmascan street urchin named Vaan looks to the heavens and dreams of leaving his fallen homeland to live the life of a sky pirate, free to go where he will.

He is about to learn that the freedom he craves is not easily won, and that to realise his dreams, he must first realise the dreams of a nation.

Setting

Final Fantasy XII is set in the land of Ivalice, where magic is very common. A mineral called magicite supports magical spells and is also empowering airships, a common way of transport. Ivalice is divided into three continents: Ordalia in the west, Valendia and Kerwon to the south. The Rozarrian Empire lies in Ordalia, while the Archadian Empire lies in Velandia. Dalmasca lies between both continents and empires, surrounded by a desert.

2 years before the story Dalmasca and various smaller nations have been subjugated by the Archadian Empire, and the tension between Archadia and Rozzaria is rising.

Story

Princess Ashelia of Dalmasca and Prince TRasler of Nabradia have just been wed as the Archadian Empire invades both kingdoms. Rasler is killed during the war and the city of Nabudis is destroyed. After signing a treaty of surrender, King Raminas of Dalmasca is assassinated. Dalmascan captain Basch is made responsible for this assassination and is sentenced to death, and it is announced that Princess Ashelia has commited suicide.

Two years later, Vaan is infiltrating the palace during a dinner to celebrate Archadian Prince Vayne Solidor becoming consul of Rabanstre. Vaan finds a piece of magicite in the treasury and is discovered by Balthier and Fran, who were looking for it. Together they escape into the sewers where they met the Dalmascan Resistance leader Amalia, before they are captured by Archadian forces. In the dungeons they meet Basch, who was imprisoned instead of killed, and he claims that his twin brother Gabranth was the one who assassinated the king. Together they escape the dungeon and go back to Rabanastre, were they learn that Vaan's friend Penelo was kidnapped to the floating city of Bhujerba.

They meet Lamont, who is Vayne's younger brother Larsa in disguise. After they rescue Penelo they are captured and detained on the Archadian airship Leviathan. There they are reunited with Amalia, who is Princess Ashelia. Judge Ghis, who is head of the Leviathan, takes the magicite which is the royal Dalmascan artifact "deifacted nethicite". The party escapes and journey to collect another piece of nethicite to proof Princess Ashelia's identity: the Dawn Shard. Again, they are captured by Ghis, but when he uses the Dawn Shard instead of the usual magicite, the Leviathan is destroyed and the party flees.

They encounter Larsa again who is seeking a peace treaty between Dalmasca and the Empire. They seek out Ivalice's religious leader Gran Kiltias Anastasis and beg for his approval of Ashelia as queen of Dalmasca. But Anastasis is killed by Archadia. Emperor Gramis dies and Vayne becomes the new Emperor.

The party travels to Archadia where they meet Doctor Cid who is the creator of manufactured magicite. He directs them to Giruvegan to find the source of nethicite. They encounter the Occuria, the makers of nethicite, and from the Sun-cryst they cut new pieces of nethicite. Princess Ashelia learns about Venat, once of the Occuria, who has defected them to help give mankind back the control over their own history, and who is manipulating Vayne in his quest to congquer Ivalice and Cid to create manufactured magicite. With this, they want to reduce the power of the Occuria.

Princess Ashelia decides to destroy the Sun-cryst. The party defeats Gabranth who reveals that he really has killed King Raminas. Al-Cid, who they have met before and was working together with Larsa to achieve a peace treaty, informs the party that the Dalmascan Resistance led by Ondora is about the fight Archandia in Rabanastre, but they are also facing the Sky Fortress Bahamut. The party infiltrates the sky fortress and find Larsa trying to convince his brother to go to war. He fails, and the party fights and defeats Vayne and Venat. After the battle, Larsa and Ashelia announce to end of conflict. Larsa is the new emperor of Archadia with Basch as his new protector, and Ashelia becomes Queen of Dalmasca. Vaan and Penelo meet with Balthier and Fran to go on another adventure.
