Setting

The story takes place in the Kingdom of Ivalice within an unnamed world. The kingdom is located on an peninsula which is connected with a landmass to the south. It is mostly populated by humans, though intelligent monsters can be found. Artificats and ruins indicated that former civilizations relied on ancient machinery. Nowadays magic is overall present. The Kingdom of Ordalia lies to the east and Romanda to the north.

Ivalice has ended a war with those nations called the Fifty Years War and is facing economic problems. With the king dead and the heir too young to take the throne a regent is needed that reigns in the name of the prince. Two candidates exist: Duke Goltana of the Black Lion, and Duke Larg of the White Lion.

Story

Fighting for the vacant throne of the Kingdom of Ivalice, the Lion War emerges. With Duke Goltana of the Black Lion on one side, supported by Princess Ovelia, and Duke Larg of the White Lion, supported by Prince Orinas.

Ramza, part of the noble Beoulve family, and his childhood friend Delita witness the murder of Delita's sister during on uprising. Both then abandon their ties to nobility and join various factions. Ramza joins a mercenary group, and Delita joins Goltana's forces. They are reunited when the leader of the mercenary group, Gafgarion, attempts to take Princess Ovelia to Duke Larg. It is suggested to visit Cardinal Delacroix of the Galbados Church, and on this journey, Ramza meets Mustadio. He is a mechanist who has a Zodiac Stone, a holy relic. Since he is hunted for its power, Mustadio also seeks Delacroix's protection.

Ramza discovers that the church used the legend of the Zodiac Braves to gather the Zodiac Stones and trigger the Lion War. To stop Ramza Delacroix transforms into a demon, but he is defeated by Ramza. Due to his actions Ramza is considered a Heretic and chased by Knights Templar, the knights of the church. Ramza gathers proofs about the lies the church told about their central holy figure Saint Ajora, and aims to reveal the truth.

In a major battle Goltana and Larg are slain. Ramza stops the fight and saves General Count Cidolfus Orlandeau, but the church still gains control over Ivalice since both leaders of the Lion War are dead. Is is revealed that the Knights Templar are possessed by demons of the Lucavi who seek to resurrect their leader Ultima. For the resurrection they needed enough sacfrices of blood and a suitable vessel, which is found in Ramzas sister Alma. Once Ultima is resurrected, Ramza and his allies destroy her and escape Ivalice.

In the epilogue it is revealed that Delita marries Princess Ovelia and becomes King of Ivalice, yet Ovelia distrusts him and they stab each other. Ramza and Alma fake their deaths and vanish.
