Setting

The game is set in the futuristic world of Gran Pulse, which is often simply called Pulse. Above the worlds surface is Cocoon, a massive artificial sphere where most of the story takes place. It is ruled by the Sanctum, a theocratic government. Pulse and Cocoon are controlled by fal'Cie, mechanical beings with godlike power. They proivide water and light for the people living in Cocoon. Each fal'Cie has a specific task, and they can mark humans as their servants. They are branded with a mark of Cocoon or Pulse and are given a task they need to fulfill, a so called "Focus" Those servatns are called l'Cie. If they complete their task in time they are transformed into crystal and gain eternal life. If not, they turn into monsters called Cie'th.

Several hundred years before the events of the game a War of Transgression took place between Pulse and Cocoon. During this battle l'Cie from Pulse damaged Cocoon, fulfilling their Focus and turning into Crystal. The hole that was created with patched up with materials from Pulse and the citizens of Cocoon lived in fear ever since. This is used by the Sanctum to remain in power.

Story

After getting in touch with something from Pulse the cititzens of Bodhum in Cocoon are evicted. Thirteen days prior, a fal'Cie has been discovered near the town, which was found by Lightning's sister Serah. She was made into a l'Cie by it. Lightning and Sezah derail a train bound for Bodhum to save Serah. Meanwhile, Snow and his resistance group NORA are trying to rescue the evicted citizens, but several of them are killed. Heading to the fal'Cie Anima to save Serah, Snow is joined by the of the citizens: Hope and Vanille. The two parties meet at the fal'Cie and witness how Serah is turned into Crystal. Anima then claims them as l'Cie and cast them out to different parts of Cocoon. They all have the same vision: A monster called Raganrok. They find Serah in her crystallized form. While the others leave, Snow remains behind with her.

Snow is captured and detained on the airship Lindblum where he meets two members of the Cavalry, Cid and Fang. The others flee from PSICOM and getting seperated by an airstrike. Hope and Lightning travel to Palumpolum, while Sazh and Vanille travel to Nautilus. Hope wants to take revenge on Snow for the death of his mother, and Lightning tries to stop him from his plan. They meet with Snow and Fang, and Fang reveals that she and Vanille are l'Cie from Pulse and responsible for the eviction. Hope decids not to kill Snow. They flee the city with the aid of Cid. In Nautilus, Sazh and Vanille discuss how Sazh's son Dajh was turned into a l'Cie by an Cocoon fal'Cie. Vanille reveals that she is a l'Cie from Pulse and indirectly responsible for Dajh to be turned. They are then captured and detained on the airship Palamecia.

On the Palamecia, the party is reunited and they confront Galenth Dysley, the Sanctum's Primarch and the the fal'Cie ruler Barthandelus in disguise. He tells them that their focus is to tranform into the beast Ragnarok and slay the sleeping fal'Cie Orphan who keeps Cocoon afloat. The party flees and learn from Cid that the fal'Cie beleive that Cocoons destruction will summon the Maker, the creator of worlds, but the fal'Cie cannot harm Orphan themselves. Vanille and Fang reveal that they were part of the War of Transgression and that their Focus was the same: to become Ragnarok and kill Orphan. The party journeys to Vanille and Fang's hometome on Pulse, yet the town is deserted. They cannot remove their l'Cie marks and are confronted by Barthandelus again. They learn that he has made Cid the new Primarch of Cocoon to create chaos so the Cavalry will attack Cid and Orphan.

The party infiltrates Cocoon and head towards Orphan. They discover that the Cavalry has been turned into Cie'th. The party defeats Barthandelus, but Orphan awakes and merges with Barthandelus. Fang is compelled to finish her transformation into Ragnarok while the others seem to be transformed into Cie'th. But they reappear in human form and prevent the transformation. The party defeats Orphan and Cocoon is falling towards Pulse. Everyone besides Vanille and Fang are turned into Crystal for completing their Focus, while Vanille and Fang transforms into Ragnarok together to prevent the collision between Cocoon and Pulse. The rest of the party awakens on Pulse and is reunited with Serah and Dajh.
