Alisaie is gazing out intently between the trees.

— In-game description

Steps

 • Survey the designated location.
 • Rescue Mehvan.
 • Search for Mehvan's baby.
 • Have Alphinaud tend to the baby.
 • Speak with Alphinaud.

Journal

 • Alisaie is gazing out intently between the trees.
 • As she surveyed the dense jungle, Alisaie caught sight of someone being pursued by a great beast. Whether or not that person is Mehvan remains to be seen, but regardless, you must give chase.
 • The figure Alisaie spied was indeed Mehvan, but before you and the twins can slay her pursuer, the beast seizes the poor woman and casts her into the dark waters, along with her infant child. Without hesitation, you dive into the water after the pair.
 • You find Mehvan and know at once she has drawn her last breath. With yet another tragedy weighing heavy on your heart, you cast about the water for her child.
 • Mehvan's infant daughter appears to have miraculously survived the plunge. To save the child from drowning, however, you must swim to the surface and seek Alphinaud's aid.
 • Alphinaud attempts to tend to the babe with his healing magicks, but soon concludes that she will need a warm bed and rest in order to survive. In that moment, you are beset by yet more terrible beasts. Entrusting the child's safe return to an anxious-yet-determined Matsya, you and your companions prepare for battle.
 • Alphinaud takes stock of your current situation, observing that─for what small comfort it might offer─the ill-fated Qerasaf and Mehvan perished without being transformed into beasts themselves, meaning their souls will return to the aetherial sea. Having done all that can be done, you and your companions prepare to move on.

Dialogue

Optional dialogue

Alphinaud: We must go after them at once!
Matsya: Wh-What!? Was that Mehvan!?

Accepting the quest (Cutscene)

Alisaie: Over there! My view was blocked by the trees, but I'm sure I saw someone being chased by a beast!
Alisaie: Yams, go with Matsya and search along the river! Alphinaud and I will circle around from the south!

Optional dialogue

Matsya: We've reached the Font of Maya... Maybe they're hiding in the ruins?

Survey the designated location. (Cutscene)

Voiced cutscene
Matsya: That's her... No, I'm...I'm sure of it! Mehvan!
Mehvan: Don't, please!
Although Alphinaud and Alisaie tries to attack, the abomination grabs Mehvan, who clutches her baby, and throws her into the water.
Matsya: No...gods have mercy!
Voiced cutscene end.

Rescue Mehvan.

Mehvan's lifeless body floats before you, battered and broken. Her death no doubt came swiftly.
Her infant daughter, however, is nowhere to be seen...

Optional dialogue

There is nothing more you can do for the ill-fated Mehvan. Her child, however, may yet be saved...

Search for Mehvan's baby.

You take the babe into your arms. If she yet lives, you cannot tell, but she will surely not survive unless you carry her to the surface at once.

Optional dialogue

Alisaie: So? Where are they!?
Matsya: Oh no, no, no... Wh-What do we do? What do we do!?

Have Alphinaud tend to the baby. (Cutscene)

Alphinaud: Did you find Mehvan and the child!?
Alphinaud: Damn it all...
Alphinaud: You have the child!? Let me see her!
Voiced cutscene
Alisaie: She's so cold, Alphinaud...
Alphinaud: The child is alert, and I see no wounds. And yet, she grows weaker...
Alphinaud: My spells can do no more. What she needs is a change of clothes and a warm bed. We must hurry back!
A horde of abominations approach the group.
Alphinaud: Not now...!
Alisaie: Matsya, take the child!
Alphinaud: Godsdammit, it appears we've made enough noise to be heard for malms around. More will be upon us ere long.
Alphinaud: We make our stand here. Matsya, can you take her back to the village?
Matsya: Th-The child? All...all by myself!? You can't be serious!
Alisaie: The beasts will follow you home unless we stop them here─and so we shall.
Alisaie: Be strong, Matsya! Her life is in your hands!
Matsya: R-Right! I...I can do it!
Alisaie: I know you can! We'll keep them busy, Matsya. Go ─ quickly!
Matsya: Steady... You know the way...
Matsya: No, no! Not you, too...
Matsya: Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid...
Matsya: To live is to suffer. To drink of calamity...
Matsya: 'Tis a perilous path... Death...lurks in the dark...
Matsya: N-No! I'm not afraid! I'm not afraid!
Matsya: Do not avert your eyes. See...see your life for what it is...
Matsya: See how the hardships make you strong. Every doubt reforged...
Two abominations stand in Matsya's way.
Matsya: Every...agony...
Matsya: Huh?

Matsya: The divinity...?
Vrtra: ...Nay. But one who would deliver thee just the same.
Matsya: Please... You must save the child!
Matsya: She is all that remains of Mehvan and Qerasaf. Please!
Estinien: Well, well. Seems the babe's taken a liking to you.
Vrtra: Thou art strong, little one. Let us convey thee to thy home.
Estinien: I spied our friends as we flew in...they appeared to be holding their own against the horde.
Alisaie: Right. That's the last of them. We should hurry and find Matsya...

What will you say?
> I have a feeling he'll be fine.
Alisaie: Really? How can you be so sure?
> He had help. From on high.
 Alisaie: What, like divine aid...?

Estinien: A fine battle it must have been. Shame I missed it.
Alphinaud: Estinien! It was you who came to Matsya's aid?
Estinien: I was only along for the ride ─ Vrtra was the one who saw the boy was in need. The two are headed back to the village.
Alphinaud: Where the wyrm will honor Ahewann's wishes and finally reveal himself to his people...
Estinien: Perhaps so. Will you go and join them?
Alisaie: There's something I need to do first.
Alisaie: Mehvan gave her life so that her child might live. She deserves better than to be left to drift alone.
Alisaie: She deserves to be laid to rest beside her husband, at least. Will you help me?
Voiced cutscene end

Optional dialogue

Alisaie: ...
Estinien: Go. I will keep watch until your work is done.

Speak with Alphinaud.

Alphinaud: We have done what we can. 'Tis for the villagers of Palaka's Stand to perform the funeral rites.
Alphinaud: If nothing else, Mehvan and Qerasaf died as they lived ─ as themselves, and not as beasts. Their souls will find peace in the aetherial sea.
Alphinaud: To think the day would come when even that smallest of solaces would be this comforting...
