"Tradition is the chain by which fools are bound."

Solus zos Galvus was the architect of modern Garlemald. A brilliant tactician and statesman born to pureblood Garleans, Galvus joined the military at the age of sixteen. He immediately distinguished himself from the rank and file, and had attained the rank of legatus by his twenty-fourth nameday. It was his decision to restructure the army around warmachina that gave Garlemald its current strength, and his elevation to republican dictator and subsequently Emperor was a natural consequence.

Galvus was a self-made man, and history will remember his successes. However, it is difficult to characterize his life as happy: he was betrayed by those he had believed his closest friends, and lost his firstborn son to illness when the boy was still young. The First Emperor succumbed to an ailment at the age of eighty-eight.

Solus' lore as of the beginning of A Realm Reborn is described on the Lodestone:

"No lands must remain beyond our grasp. Go forth. Conquer. Rule."

Born of distinguished lineage in the Garlemald Republic, Solus zos Galvus began his military career at a young age. After a string of impressive victories on the field of battle, however, he soon attained the rank of Legatus, and proceeded to integrate machina technology into the army's regular rank and file. With single-minded determination, Galvus transformed his fledgling nation into a formidable military power.
His actions garnered the undivided support of the citizenry, and catapulted him into the position of Dictator, supreme commander of Garlemald. In the years that followed, Garlean forces conquered all the lands of the north and hammered them into a single entity. Galvus then instituted an imperial regime to govern their new territories, conferring upon himself the title of "Emperor."
The eastern nations were the first to feel the newborn empire's mighty fist. It was during this campaign that the emperor witnessed firsthand the destruction wrought by the primals—an experience that led to an imperial mandate for their annihilation.
Now an old man of more than eighty winters, Galvus yet rules as emperor, but court rumors speak of frail health and frequent illness.

MSQ Involvement

Solus is first mentioned in in either The Lominsan Envoy, The Gridanian Envoy, or The Ul'dahn Envoy, depending on which city-state the player starts in. There Raubahn informs the player that Solus built the Garlean empire within his lifetime, but now grows old and frail, leading to concerns of succession within the Garlean empire. Indeed, his death is confirmed in The Mother of Exiles, where Yugiri informs Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light that a war of succession has broken out in Garlemald, implying that the emperor has died.
