Sphene wishes to check on the state of the outskirts.

— In-game description

Steps

Journal

  • Sphene wishes to check on the state of the outskirts.
  • Sphene is eager to follow the suggestion that she check in on her countrymen, but fears that speaking with those who are unaware of her return would prove more disruptive than not. Thankfully, Krile's advice to visit Mahuwsa at Yyupye's Halo seems the perfect compromise, as the fieldworker is aware of Sphene's circumstances and would surely be glad to know you all are alive and well.
  • You are welcomed by Mahuwsa, who gives a brief account of the chaos which arose from the enthrallment of those wearing neo regulators. She is optimistic for the future, however, thanking you for putting a stop to Calyx and praising Sphene for her uplifting speech. After Mahuwsa leaves to aid the residents of the outskirts, the discussion turns to the subject of recruiting arcane practitioners to assist with the treatments. While your comrades are occupied with this endeavor, Alisaie asks if you might track down Gulool Ja, who is currently making every problem in the kingdom his personal responsibility to solve. Taapu in the driftdowns should be able to point you in his and Erenville's direction.
  • As promised, Taapu is able to direct you to where Gulool Ja is hopefully taking a well-earned rest. She suggests you look for him somewhere in the vicinity of the old Alexandrian ruins.
  • Delighted to see you, Gulool Ja explains that he has heard from Koana regarding Wuk Lamat's condition, but relief wars with frustration as he laments how his lack of strength has hindered his ability to help others. He then takes you to a spot where he keeps both his father's and Otis's swords, and shares his plans to train with the Landsguard that he might one day be worthy to wield these blades. Erenville offers his warm encouragement, and Gulool Ja, his path decided, wrests a promise from you to spar with him when he has grown bigger.
  • Gulool Ja thanks you for listening to his future ambitions and assures you that he will take things one step at a time. Asserting that all is well with them for the moment, Erenville urges you to stop by the Backroom to pay Shale a visit.
  • You arrive in the Backroom to meet a visibly relieved Shale. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude for your deeds, and the mood shifts to one of celebration.

Dialogue

Accepting the quest

Sphene: Mayhap I will take you up on your suggestion. Only...I am concerned that, given who I am, approaching those unaware of my return may only serve to confuse them further...
Krile: Then why not speak with Mahuwsa? She works the fields at Yyupye's Halo not far from here.
Krile: As one of those who came to see you off before our clash with Calyx, she will surely be glad to know you are safe and sound.
Sphene: What an excellent idea! I think I shall do just that. Thank you, Krile!

Optional Dialogue

Sphene: Ah, so this is the place where Mahuwsa works.
Sphene: Back in Resolution, she seemed most interested to learn about me, yet I would be glad to learn much more of them, as well.
Y'shtola: Sphene's identity will not remain a secret much longer. Her message touched the hearts of people throughout the kingdom.
Alisaie: Erenville and Shale were both relieved to learn of our victory. I could practically hear the tension drain out of their voices, especially Shale's─she was quite worried for us.

Speak with Mahuwsa (cutscene)

Mahuwsa: Look who it is! Good to see you again, hale and healthy!
Sphene: I am sorry we did not get word to you sooner. How is everyone?
Mahuwsa: Well, nothing terrible befell us, as such. The neo regulator crowd did all start acting strange at the same time, though.
Mahuwsa: Pepoane was one of them... I'm told the authorities are tending to him at a medical facility.
Alisaie: You needn't worry. With the proper treatment, we'll soon have everyone back to their normal selves.
Mahuwsa: I sure am glad to hear that. I'd like to not lose any more friends, if it can be helped.
Mahuwsa: I also hear that the “Queen Sphene” who tried enticing us to become Endless turned out to be an impostor. What kind of heartless villain preys on people's insecurities like that?
Mahuwsa: Yet despite the danger to yourselves, you and yours made sure to put a stop to it, if I understand things correctly?
Mahuwsa: Then we owe you a debt of gratitude. It's up to each of us now to make the most of what you've given us!
Mahuwsa: We're alive because of you. And while we live and breathe, our future is ours to decide.
Mahuwsa: Your broadcast was a message of hope. For me. For everyone.
Sphene: ...
Mahuwsa: Now I really should be going. We still have to keep things running without Pepoane and the others, and the outskirts need all the spare hands they can get.
Sphene: I... Is there anything I might do to help heal the enthralled!?
Alisaie: Quite a lot, in fact. I could very much use a mage of your ability.
Y'shtola: Actually, this would be a good opportunity to round up other arcane practitioners, and teach everyone how to use the porxies. The knowledge will come in handy for treating levin sickness, as well.
Sphene: Wonderful! I shall petition Gossan to spread the word!
Y'shtola: Our outskirts tour is canceled, 'twould seem.
Alisaie: By the way, Forename─Alphinaud told me that Koana arrived to escort Lamaty'i back to Tuliyollal.
Alisaie: Alphinaud himself will be returning to Alexandria momentarily, so between the two of us, I think we can sort out the treatment arrangements. Given all that, I had a mind to ask you a different favor.
Alisaie: Would you mind looking in on Gulool Ja? According to Shale, he's been running around the kingdom, determined to personally solve every problem.
Alisaie: Last she heard, he was pitching in over at the driftdowns with Erenville.
Alisaie: If you ask...Taapu, I believe her name was? She should be able to point you in their general direction.

Speak with Taapu

Taapu: Ah, I know that voice...
Taapu: And happy I am to hear it─we all prayed fervently for your safe return.
Taapu: Looking for Gulool Ja, are you? He was here, asking if we needed help with anything, or if we had noticed anyone who had been acting strangely.
Taapu: He sounded exhausted, so I told him we were fine for the moment and insisted he take a rest. I can only hope he will heed my advice.
Taapu: I believe he ran off towards the ruins of old Alexandria. He always did seem to like it there.

Optional Dialogue

Taapu: Gulool Ja is a precocious child, but a child, nonetheless. He needs our guidance and support...
Erenville: Forename, how─!? ...Ah, came in search of us, did you?
Erenville: You needn't have trekked all the way out here, but it is good to see you. Alisaie gave us the broad strokes, and Koana had some choice words as well.

Search for Gulool Ja (voiced cutscene)

Gulool Ja: Oh, welcome back!
Erenville: It's been a trial, hasn't it?
Gulool Ja: We heard from Koana. He said that Lamaty'i is in no immediate danger and should make a full recovery...
Erenville: Vow of Resolve, indeed... Resolved to be as reckless as ever. She might spare a thought for us helpless spectators from time to time.
Gulool Ja: You and Lamaty'i and all the others fought so bravely for Alexandria.
Gulool Ja: And what did I do...?
Gulool Ja: I was useless! Even with the king's authority!
Gulool Ja: If I were strong, more people might still be alive!
Gulool Ja: But I'm weak... So weak...
What will you say?
> You'll grow into your strength.
> Those who know weakness first often become the strongest.
Erenville: That's right, and you have your whole life ahead of you. We all start somewhere.
Gulool Ja: Actually...there's something I'd like you to see.
Gulool Ja: My father and Otis's swords. I asked Lamaty'i to bring them here.
Gulool Ja: I've decided to train under a Landsguard soldier and become a swordsman.
Erenville: That's a big commitment...
Gulool Ja: I'm still not sure if I want to be the King of Resolve. But I want to be strong enough to protect the people I love.
Gulool Ja: So I'll train as hard as I can, and then I'll come back here.
Gulool Ja: When I'm ready to take up these blades...
Gulool Ja: That's the path I've decided on!
Erenville: Good for you, Gulool Ja. I look forward to seeing your progress.
Gulool Ja: When I'm bigger and stronger, you'll spar with me, won't you?

Optional Dialogue

Erenville: Yet to lift a blade and he wants to spar already. He is Gulool Ja Ja's grandson, alright.

Speak with Gulool Ja

Gulool Ja: Thank you both for listening. I'll take it one step at a time, and stick with what I know for now.
Gulool Ja: Like...cooking the meals that Otis taught me, and keeping everyone's bellies full! How does that sound?
Erenville: Sounds like a fine idea. Everyone's been working hard, so I'm sure a good meal would be much appreciated.
Erenville: Well, I think we've passed a malmstone here.
Erenville: What about the Backroom? If you haven't already, I'd expect Shale and the others would appreciate you stopping by to say hello.

Optional Dialogue

Erenville: I have no plans to move on just yet. One of the afflicted is an old friend, and I want to stay close while the treatments are ongoing.
Gulool Ja: Otis's sword has seen better days... I'll ask Genolt to fix it when I'm big enough to wield it.
Gulool Ja: As for my father's weapons, they were found in the Skydeep Cenote. I wonder if he ever intended for me to have them...
Krile: Oh, we had the same idea, I see! I thought it might be nice to catch up with our Oblivion friends before we delve into more serious matters with the city officials.
Genolt: Made it back with all yer bits intact, eh? I knew ye was one to watch the moment I set eyes on ye!
Genolt: As for me, there's all sorts o' restoration work comin' in. Won't be gettin' a proper snooze in for the foreseeable future, I reckon, ahahaha!

Speak with Shale in the Backroom

Shale: Forename!
Shale: Oh, thank the stars you're safe. I heard the reports, of course, but there's no substitute for actually seeing it.
Shale: Welcome back... We have so much to thank you for.
