Mahaud's stepbrother, the twenty-six-year-old Ancel is likewise an orphan raised by the apothecary in Lost Hope. When a fell beast attacked their village, the Highlander was grievously injured trying to protect his stepsister, with whom he was later subjected to experiments by the sage Guildivain. Prone to physical outbursts when in his cups, he often needs to be restrained at the Hard Place—no mean feat given his unnatural enhancements.
