Khalzahl, having begun his career as a merchant's retainer, labored day in and day out to establish the trade consortium that would become his life's work. Yedlihmad served as his base of operations, whence he exported produce, medicines, handicrafts, and myriad other goods across the seas. Such products were not procured from large firms but individual merchants, who would avail themselves of Khalzahl's services to reach new markets. The tides of business are wont to shift at a moment's notice, however, and the appearance of the Tower of Zot saw Khalzahl's once-lucrative venture brought to ruin. The distraught Raen, who regarded his clients and employees as family, was heartbroken at the thought of being unable to support them, and in his despair was transformed into Thavnair's blasphemy.
