Hardiboiled's eyes are alight with anticipation, nose full of the scent of his quarry.

— In-game description

Steps

  • Wait at the designated location in the nameslates.
  • Speak with Hardiboiled in Yuweyawata.
  • Speak with Noirshu in Solution Nine.

Journal

  • Hardiboiled's eyes are alight with anticipation, nose full of the scent of his quarry.
  • Awake and seething with fury, Keshkayi shares the tale of his failed scheme and Carnelian's betrayal. He freely reveals the location of the duplication device—a hidden lab in the bowels of the Kanilokka Corpus—demanding that you make the Crime King pay for ruining his plans. Although certainly eager to charge in, guns blazing, the detective first wishes to pay his respects at Noirshu's grave in the nameslates. He bids you wait for him there while he picks up his air-wheeler from the repair shop.
  • Your wait at the nameslates ends with the arrival of Mymond, who bears a letter from an apologetic detective. Hardiboiled writes that he has gone to confront Carnelian alone, not wanting to risk any more lives for his vendetta. No sooner do you finish reading when Hildibrand and the others arrive, having interrogated Keshkayi and confirmed that Noirshu's soul was indeed transferred into an oglop. You inform them of Hardiboiled's reckless solo endeavor, and the inspector immediately dashes off at a ludicrous pace.
Meanwhile, in the Kanilokka Corpus lab, Carnelian has succeeded in creating multiple replicas of himself. He merges his clot copies into the towering form of the Lich, and proceeds to treat Hardiboiled to a hostile demonstration of his ancestor's necromantic magicks...
※In the event that you leave the area, you may return by speaking with the accommodating reforger at the driftdowns.
  • As the undying zombies rise again and again, Hardiboiled's cool demeanor begins to crack, but Hildibrand's persuasive dance moves provide a timely rescue. Now able to combine the detective's firepower with the inspector's gentlemanly flair, they manage to overwhelm the incredulous Lich. You arrive with the others just as Hardiboiled aims for the kill, but the revelation of Noirshu's survival proves a fatal distraction. Carnelian unleashes a spell of certain death at the detective, yet it is Hildibrand's soul that is torn free when he intercepts the unholy blast. This seeming tragedy allows the fate-linked pair to fuse the spiritual and corporeal into a new form of their own—Hildiboiled! The golden giant shrugs off the Lich's deadly incantations before slamming him into submission with unprecedented Mandervillian might.
The impact severs their union, and Hildibrand's soul is soon caught up by the afterlife's inexorable current. Yet a sliver of life remains in the inspector's breast, and you draw his soul back into his body with your own irresistible performance. With Hildibrand none the worse for wear, you leave the lab behind to accompany Hardiboiled as he awaits Noirshu's long-overdue restoration.
  • You head outside to escape the oppressive air of the facility, and it is not long until Hildibrand and the others emerge with the restored Noirshu. Overwhelmed with emotion at the return of his assistant, Hardiboiled is ready to call it a day...only to find Hildibrand sat astride his beloved Night Stallion. The inspector's attempt to operate the air-wheeler sends it shooting up into the air, where he and the vehicle are promptly struck by lightning and spun off into the distance. Nashu chases after her ever-dwindling mentor, leaving you to accept Hardiboiled's invitation to meet him back at his house in Solution Nine.
  • The case now closed thanks to your stalwart assistance, the detective shows his appreciation by presenting you with a Night Stallion replica (sans customization). From Noirshu you receive a delightful new oglop companion—one of the many friends she made during her insectoid days. Having said their farewells, Hardiboiled and his oddly familiar assistant return to running their detective agency. You wonder if your paths will ever cross again, even as their distinctive silhouettes are swallowed by the neon jungle of Solution Nine...

The first part of the battle is against 20 weak and slow-moving Rotten Walker enemies. As there are many enemies, killing them using single-target attacks is very tedious, so use Pulp Fission when is is ready and Night Stallion on cooldown.

After all the zombies are defeated, they will reincarnated by Carnelian and will need to be defeated once more.

Stage 2: Carnelian

The player will receive a checkpoint and restart from the beginning of this stage if they die. They will be accompanied by Hildibrand, who will simply provide moral support for most of the battle, except for one part.

  • Alexandrian Quake: A room-wide attack that can be dodged by using Molting Python, when the overhead timer reaches zero. If not dodged, will deal around 1,600 damage.
  • Alexandrian Thunder III: Carnelian dashes to one edge of the room and uses a telegraphed 180 degree frontal cleave.
  • Alexandrian Thunder: A tankbuster targeting Hardiboiled. Use Molting Python when the cast bar is almost full to avoid (there is no overhead timer).
  • Mold of the Dead: A seven-hit homing circular AoE.
  • Summon: Summons a line of eight targetable Illicit Aerostat adds. These will begin casting Bilateral Ray and fill the entire room with line AoEs, but can be defeated to stop the cast. Afterwards, the adds will periodically and use Electray, a telegraphed line AoE aimed at the player. Defeat the remaining adds to stop the attacks.
  • Alexandrian Quake III: A telegraphed point-blank AoE centered on Carnelian, followed by several telegraphed concentric donut AoEs. A second set of telegraphs will then begin spawning opposite the first epicenter.
  • Alexandrian Bonds: Inflicts a 10-second cleansable bind on Hardiboiled. Use Molting Python to remove it.
  • Ripper Claw: Carnelian dashes to one edge of the room and uses two telegraphed line AoEs, one hitting Hildibrand, and the other one hitting where the player was originally bound.
  • Alexandrian Quake III: Similar to before, but now spawns both sets of AoE telegraphs at once. This is followed by another set of two on the previously empty cardinals.
  • Summon: Carnelian becomes untargetable and summons six Illicit Aerostats at the edge of the arena. Four Illicit Turrets will be near each Aerostat. Hildibrand will grant the Guilty as Charged buff, allowing Hardiboiled to use Pulp Fission freely. Use this attack and target the Illicit Aerostats to also take out the surrounding Illicit Turrets in one hit. The Aerostats will use Electray, telegraphed line AoEs at Hardiboiled. After the first wave of adds is defeated, another identical wave will spawn.
  • After defeating the second wave, a short transition will play, and the limit break The Short Good-bye will become available. Use this to complete the fight.

Dialogue

Accepting the quest

Right, let's head inside and hear what Keshkayi has to say for himself.
Start of cutscene.
Well, “mastermind”? What happened to you?
The duplication device was restored. I had all that I required to build my genius army...
But mere moments before I began to replicate my brilliant self en masse, that damnable cur burned the hand that freed him.
Seared as I was by Carnelian's sorcery, it was a miracle I managed to escape at all... But of my ambitions? Naught survives but smoke and ashes.
I want you to make him pay! You'll find the device in a hidden lab on the lowest level of the Kanilokka Corpus.
If Carnelian's aim is mass self-replication, then that is where he must be. It will take time for the alien technology to do its work...
Trying to tame a vicious breed like the Crime King was a gamble...and you lost. But lucky for you, I was planning to bring him down anyway.
Looks like I called how things played out, more or less. Didn't twig that Carnelian would hole up in a lab right beneath our noses, though.
Hand this sorry sod over to the authorities as soon as he's able to walk. Might put up a fight, but I doubt he'll be much of a challenge for a strapping hunter like yourself.
He's welcome to try. Don't worry, I'll be sure to see him into custody.
We know where Carnelian is now, and I'm ready to charge in, guns blazing...but first I wanna pay my respects at Noirshu's grave.
While burying the dead isn't the custom in Alexandria, Noirshu and I were never comfortable with the whole regulator deal. I'd be damned if I was gonna forget, and putting her to rest was my way of honoring her memory...
Night Stallion's been in the shop, so I'll head over and pick him up. Go on ahead to the nameslates, and I'll meet you there.
End of cutscene.

Wait at the designated location in the nameslates

Optional dialogue
Leave Keshkayi to me. I'll nurse him back to health, then see him delivered to the sentries.

Upon interacting with the Destination Point:

If the Player is not a Disciple of War or Magic at or above level 100
You must be a Disciple of War or Magic of level 100 or above to proceed.
Start of cutscene.
Surprise—it's me again. Got a letter here for you from the detective.
Right, that's my business done. Time to go and pry into someone else's.
Hardiboiled's Letter
Sorry for the change of plans, Forename, but I need to handle Carnelian alone.
You've helped me out time and again, and I ain't letting you risk your life for my personal vendetta.
I'll put the Crime King in the ground, where he belongs. You just sit tight and wait for the good news.

Hardiboiled, alone, bites on an egg. Hildibrand, Nashu, and the Gentle Dead Man regroup with the player.

Forename! HEY, Forename!
We've learned the most astonishing fact!
The new researcher recruit of our Gentle Dead friend here spoke of a lady he had seen on the lowest level of the Kanilokka Corpus—a lady who could very well be Noirshu!
She lies unmoving within a capsule of some kind, looking as if she but dreams in peaceful slumber.
We then made at once for Circine's house to demand the truth from Keshkayi. The villain soon folded beneath my expert interrogation, and admitted to transferring Noirshu's soul from her captive vessel into an oglop shell.
Where is Detective Hardiboiled, by the way? I want so badly to let him know his assistant is alive and well! Well, mostly.
Seeking vengeance on his own, you say!? This calls for the utmost haste!

Hildibrand sprints off.

Wait for me, Inspector!
We should shamble along, as well!
Meanwhile, in the hidden depths of the Kanilokka Corpus...

Carnelian uses the UFO to make clones of himself. Hardiboiled confronts him, the oglop following behind.

Now that's a sickening sight. One bloodstained Crime King was already too much.
I don't recall sending you an invitation, Hardiboiled.
But no matter. I am afforded the chance to test my newfound strength...

The clones turn into slime and merge into the Lich.

Oof. The dames might've called you handsome once, but you might wanna check a mirror...
Hm hm hm... I can feel it surging through me... The nigh-unlimited power!
Behold: the majestic form of the Lich! Let us begin with a demonstration of my ancestor's dominion over the undead.

Carnelian summons a horde of zombies.

Great. This keeps getting creepier!
End of cutscene.
During this battle, you will be fighting as Detective Hardiboiled and gain access to a special dodge action.
With the proper timing, you can use Molting Python to avoid taking damage, even if you are within the area of an enemy's attack.
Certain enemy attacks will be preceded by a countdown icon. When this countdown progresses to the Molting Python icon, quickly use the Molting Python action.

Solo Duty

Defeat the rotten walkers!
Hm hm hm...
Ready for the show, Hardiboiled?
Lookin' pretty decayed there, Carnelian. And dead things oughta be sleeping in the ground.
You'll be the one going to his final rest─in the grave next to your assistant!
Nah, I'll take you down with me, punk. One-way ticket to hell.
Now you learn true horror.
Damned servants, I bid you rise!
For the love of... Just let 'em stay dead.
Cruel bastard.
Ah, how rude of me... Should I have raised Noirshu, as well?
Good one, wise guy. Let's see you smile when I knock out all those rotten teeth.
Do your worst. You cannot even best these shambling puppets.
Rise again, my thralls!
I command you!
This is getting real old, real fast...
Start of cutscene.
Unliving minions...tear that man apart!

Hildibirand appears and compels the zombie minions to dance. The oglop is surprised.

Let us remember to always comport ourselves in a gentlemanly manner, everyone!

The zombies retreat.

What just happened...?
Forcing our zombie brethren to act against their will is simply unconscionable. Whilst I do not condone violence, this situation appears beyond a peaceful resolution. Allow me to assist!
A soft-boiled savior in hell... Thanks, pal.
You dare interfere!? I'll kill you both!
End of cutscene.

Solo Duty Part 2

Defeat Carnelian!
Fear not, Detective!
I, Hildibrand, agent of enquiry, am here to help you win the day!
What can a fool like you accomplish!?
Right, well... I'm counting on ya, buddy.
Use Molting Python to evade attacks!
Violence is not the answer!
Use Molting Python to evade attacks!
Hah hah hah, I am untouchable!
I am your doom!
There is no escaping from this one!
My, what a robust fragrance...
It hit that dolt full in the face...
How is he still standing?
Use Molting Python to evade attacks!
You...irritating worms!
But I have more than magic at my disposal...
Something wrong, Crime King? Think your crown is starting to slip...
What have we here? An army of admirers...?
Make your clever quips while you can...
Let us settle this like gentlemen!
Kneel before my arcane majesty!
I sense the coming peril!
AaAaAagh!
Think that's all it takes to break us?
Use Molting Python to break free of your bonds!
Hah! I have you now!
Can't keep a good guy down. Try again, bozo.
I say, that rather stings!
D-Damn you!
Use Molting Python to evade attacks!
Then how about...this!
I shan't be caught off guard this time!
Wasting your time. My shell's too hard for you to crack.
Graceful even in flight!
Gentle is as gentle does!
If that's how it must be...
I will hold back NOTHING!
Nuts. That's a lotta metal mooks.
So many murder machines, all in a row.
But we have just the answer to that...
Detective! Remember my electrifying handstand?
Hildibrand supplies you with electrifying energy. Pulp Fission can now be used without restriction!
Unleash the power!
Defeat the electrope armaments!
Now that's a swell idea!
Keep it comin'!
What new idiocy is this...
C-Curse you!
More. I must have more!
Our strength is not yet spent!
What, no more wisecracks? Someone's feeling the pinch.
Oof, feeling a touch dizzy...
That all ya got?
My entire stock of armaments...destroyed.
Who is that foppish imbecile!?
I will not allow him to ruin my moment of triumph!
Was that...? What was that!?
I'll feel that in the morning...
DIE!!!
Damn, he's gettin' fried!
Inconceivable! No mortal can withstand such power!
Violence...is not the answer...
Heh, he's one tough egg. And I reckon we could use that aether...
Hildibrand! Gimme all the juice you got!
Of course, Detective!
Our moment is come!
Execute limit break!

Post-duty cutscene

Start of cutscene.

The player and Nashu arrive. Hardiboiled is about to finish off Carnelian.

This one's for Noirshu...
Hold your fire! Detective, your assistant is alive!
What did you say!?

Carnelian hits Hardiboiled with a fireball.

I warned you about being soft, Hardiboiled. Will you never learn?
I'd wanted to save such exquisite magecraft for more...fitting victims, but now you clods will witness the ultimate spell firsthand!
With unholy power drawn from darkest abyss, I shall sever soul from corporeal anchor...
DEATH!

The oglop jumps in front of Hardiboiled. However, Hildibrand jumps in front of both and is hit by the spell.

Hildibrand!

Hildibrand's ghost leaves his body.

Oh, I've died. How un-Mandervillian of me!

Hardiboiled and Nashu are surprised to see Hildibrand's ghost.

Bah, I've slain the dolt instead... Though I'm glad to be rid of that most bothersome gnat.
Is that...Hildibrand's ghost?
O such bittersweet sorrow... A soul should dissipate soon after leaving the flesh, but lo: our resilient zombie overlord endures in spectral form.
Hello!? This battle isn't over!
Even with your entire entourage of fools, you cannot contest our power combined!

Hildibrand's ghost merges with Hardiboiled, forming a golden entity.

Master Zombibrand's spiritual essence has merged with Master Hardiboiled's physical form! It's brilliant, it's blinding, it's...
A pure gold soul!
This changes nothing!

The entity deflects Carnelian's spells.

Hardiboiled!? It cannot be...
Hardiboiled is not here right now...

The entity becomes huge.

You can call us Hildiboiled! And your goose is cooked...
My dear fellow!
No evil can stand against the giant, golden Manderville man!

Hildiboiled suplexes Carnelian, destroying the cloning device, and leaving behind Carnelian, Hardiboiled, and Hildibrand's ghost stuck in the ground.

Yes, you've learned the truth of it: your precious Noirshu never really died.
Keshkayi needed a subject for his soul transference experiments, and the task of procuring the victim fell to me. Your name, Hardiboiled, was at the top of my hit list.
I drew upon ancestral sorcery to cast you into a deathlike sleep—for ease of delivery, you understand. But then your meddling assistant threw herself into the spell's path, and I was forced to settle for her instead.
I had to dig up Noirshu's “corpse” following the burial, then proffer her to Keshkayi in place of your sorry hide. So it was that her soul ended up in that insect vessel.
You bastard! You did that knowing how much I hate oglops!
Now, now, let us remain civilized. The process is entirely reversible...
Oh dear. My apologies, but I feel the draw of an irresistible force...

Hildibrand begins levitating.

Oh. That's right. Master Zombibrand has died... And to his untethered soul comes the call!
See you on the other side, my friends!
Don't leave me behind, Inspector!

The oglop jumps on Hildibrand's body.

Look—his body's still breathing! We gotta drag that soft-boiled soul back!
I smote that simpleton with enough ultimate death magic to kill him ten times over. There is no coming back.
What will you do?
Perform the Manderville.
Must I do...the dance?
I think we all knew it would come to this, but still...

The player performs the Manderville Mambo.

Whoa, hey now... Don't tell me you've gone and cracked!?

Hildibrand's ghost is sucked back into his body.

Oh, I say!
Thanks to that stirring performance by my adventuring associate, I, Hildibrand, agent of enquiry, inspector extraordinaire, have returned to life and am back on the case!

The others react in shock.

But you can't... It's not possible!
Heh. Toughest guy I ever saw...
Now, what was that about fixing Noirshu? You can really get her back to normal?
Your assistant's recumbent form is being held within this very facility. We need but extract her soul from the oglop, and reunite it with her original body.
I had Keshkayi provide me with a step-by-step procedure for operating the transference apparatus. It should pose no great difficulty to restore Mistress Noirshu ourselves.
The rest of us should wait at the entrance, then.

Hardiboiled arrests Carnelian.

End of cutscene.

Speak with Hardiboiled in Yuweyawata

Optional dialogue
If the player exits the instanced area early
If you need to head back to Yuweyawata, just say the word.
Travel to Yuweyawata?
Even the ultimate death magic failed to slay him... Never mind those other fiends—that dolt was the true monster.
The inspector is unstoppable!
You know what, it stinks in here... Let's head outside.
Start of cutscene.
Detective Hardiboiled!
Hey, dollface... You're looking well.
Hi, I'm Noirshu. Thank you ever so much for putting me back in my own body!
The resemblance to Nashu is, as you say, uncanny.
Right? Like peas in a pod, I tell ya.

Nashu and Noirshu sneeze at the same time.

Right, I've had my fill of musty old labs. Time to blow this joint!

Hardiboiled summons the Night Stallion. Hildibrand immediately commadeers it.

Hey, who said you could ride the Stallion!?
Surely once-fused fellows such as ourselves are above cursory formalities such as asking for permission...
Whoooaaa!

Hildibrand flies off, struggling to control the Stallion.

Watch that lightning! The chassis can't take a direct hit...

The Stallion is hit by lightning. It then blazes off to the distance.

Wait for me, Inspector!
Gosh, that looked dangerous.
Eh, he'll be fine. It's Night Stallion I'm worried about—I just had him repaired.
How did I lose to such idiots? Am I dreaming? Surely this is a nightmare...
I'll deliver Mister Lots o' Clots here to the tin men. You can head back with Noirshu to my place in Solution Nine.
And I shall re-enter the facility to recruit from the remaining zombies. I bid you gentlepeople good day.
End of cutscene.

Speak with Noirshu in Solution Nine

Start of cutscene.
Behind that rubbish receptacle is where I would hide and keep watch over the detective.
It was surprisingly fun living as an oglop, but boy am I glad to be back in my own body.
That makes two of us. Couldn't imagine having one of those creepers as an assistant.
I went and handed Carnelian over to the authorities. They'll restore him and all his monstrous pals to their original mook selves, then toss 'em in the slammer.
In other words, that's all she wrote on the Case of the Fiendish Fugitives. You're a handy fella/gal to have around, Forename.
As thanks for sticking with me through thick and thin, I made you a replica of Night Stallion. Doesn't have the same customizations, but it still runs plenty fast. Use this key when you're ready to ride.
I have a gift for you too! Of sorts! I made lots of friends while I was oglopped, and one of the little fellas has big dreams of traveling the world.
Take him along on your adventures—he'll be fantastic company!
What will you say?
My own oglop buddy!
Look at you embracing danger. I told you, those tiny devils are harbingers of death and disease...
My own oglop buddy...
You're right to be wary. Like I told you, those tiny devils are harbingers of death and disease...
Oh, they're no such thing! Oglops are harmless, not to mention cute as a chitinous button!
R-Right, well, it's your funeral: keep it where you can see it, or stow it away in your pack.
Speaking of companions, I wonder where that gentleman fop and Nashu disappeared to. Not that I'm worried or anything, but I owe them a tip of the hat at the very least...
Anyhow, Noirshu and me are gonna get back to running our detective agency here in Solution Nine. Hopefully we'll cross paths again on some other case.
Our time together in the great alleyway of life was brief but golden...like the richest, yellowest of yolk.
See ya 'round, Forename...
With the completion of Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures, you can now exchange MGP for a new orchestrion roll by speaking with the Gold Saucer attendant at the Gold Saucer.
His trail had evaporated like mist in the neon haze. The city carried on, uncaring.
I fell into a familiar humdrum rhythm, my world gone curiously quiet.
There was a gnawing absence of irritating-yet-endearing whimsy... But that's life, ain't it? No such thing as a perfect egg.
Let me leave you with a few words of wisdom.
If it ain't tough, it ain't boiled enough. But sometimes a man needs to be...gentle.

A drink slides to Hardiboiled, and the grayscale tone fades. Noirshu appears in Nashu's assistant outfit.

Who are you talking to, Detective?
