Azem
| Spoiler Warning : This article contains spoilers! |
Azem was the title held by the Fourteenth member of the Convocation of Fourteen, a governing body of the Amaurotine society on Etheirys. The title was associated with the sun, rather than a constellation like the other seats, and denoted the role of the Traveler: one who roamed the world helping people directly and serving as a liaison between the Convocation and everyday citizens.
Overview
Many details of Azem are left intentionally vague to allow players to fill in the blanks as to what they may have been like, but a few hints are scattered across the Shadowbringers and Endwalker Main Scenario Quests as well as the Pandaemonium raid series. Azem canonically matches the Warrior of Light's gender, and Emet-Selch notes that the Warrior of Light is "[their] spitting image."[1]
Azem is first hinted to in the Shadowbringers Main Scenario Quests. In The View from Above, Emet-Selch briefly reflects on Amaurot and cryptically refers to a forgotten connection with the Warrior of Light, but cuts himself short before elaborating. In A Greater Purpose, the shade of Hythlodaeus observes the presence of a second soul accompanying the Warrior of Light and reveals that they and this companion were once a single being: an unmistakable soul once known to him, whose distinctive hue he immediately recognizes as that of Azem.
The holder of the Azem title was expected to remain active in the world, addressing problems firsthand and building relationships with those who lived outside the seat of power in Amaurot. Azem was known for their independence, eccentricity, and tendency to act without seeking approval, which often led to censure from the rest of the Convocation. Despite this, Azem's actions were generally driven by a deep compassion for others and a desire to do what was right, regardless of convention.
Known Holders
Venat
Before becoming Hydaelyn, Venat held the seat of Azem. She later retired from the Convocation but continued her travels, eventually opposing the summoning of Zodiark and leading the creation of Hydaelyn. She described her successor as being half her age yet powerful enough to defeat her in a duel.[2]
The Final Azem
The Azem that would later reincarnate as the Warrior of Light (or player character) was known for being fiercely independent and deeply tied to both Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus. This Azem was widely traveled, often worked without bureaucratic oversight, and is said to have created a powerful summoning spell capable of calling allies across dimensions: an in-game explanation of the Duty Finder system.[3]
They were responsible, or alleged to be responsible, for numerous feats, including:
- Creating various mounts to ease travel.[4]
- Saving a village threatened by a volcano by turning fire aether into Ifrita, and then fighting it.[5]
This Azem was opposed to summoning Zodiark and defected; as the seat was vacant and the Convocation deemed Azem unworthy of commemoration, no crystal to preserve their memories was officially created. However, Emet-Selch created such a crystal in secret and preserved Azem's summoning spell within it.[6]
Relationships
Azem shared close ties with multiple Convocation members. Emet-Selch was nominated to the Convocation partially through Azem's public praise and endorsement.[7]
Although Azem never met the Warrior of Light directly, they became aware of the Warrior's existence and similarities to themselves, and were greatly amused by this discovery. Azem spoke highly of the Warrior, recommending them strongly to Elidibus, who trusted Azem's judgment without reservation.[8]
