Journal
- Lydirceil has something to discuss with you.
- Lydirceil informs you that Gerolt has some concerns regarding your phantom weapon—possibly relating to the weaponsmith's ambitious plans to merge ancient methods with his own homegrown techniques. Curiosity piqued, you prepare to present your weapon to Gerolt for inspection.
※Please note this quest cannot be abandoned via the journal. If you wish to abandon the quest, you may do so at any time by speaking with Lydirceil.
- After a brief examination of your phantom weapon, Gerolt concludes that his worries were, alas, warranted. Taking a moment to remind all present of the enhancement process thus far, he reveals that the island's aether—from which your weapon derives its power—is actually limiting the potential for further improvements due to its volatile, illusory nature. Thankfully, it would seem he has a plan to overcome this flaw. Rather less thankfully, Gerolt insists you /congratulate him on this breakthrough before he shares any further details.
- Buoyed by your acknowledgement, Gerolt describes how your phantom weapon has been inadvertently bound by a complex illusion, thereby limiting its power. His plan is thus: to remove its glamour-like shroud using the Archive's magical knife, which just so happens to have illusion-dispelling properties. To prepare the blade for the task, you are called upon to procure a variety of essential supplies and deliver them to the weaponsmith when ready.
Monarch whetstone: seek a trader in the markets of Tuliyollal.
Ancestral alloy ingot, ascendant twine, and majestic polish: craft using the relevant recipe or purchase from the market board.
※Should you choose to craft the three items listed above, you will need to have obtained the Master Recipe XII tomes of the Disciples of the Hand.
- As you hand Gerolt the supplies, he declares his wish for a quick tipple to prevent any knife-honing mishaps. Doubts about the efficacy of rum in this context notwithstanding, you resolve to speak with the weaponsmith again.
- With quenched thirst—and surprisingly steady hands—Gerolt soon hones the blade to perfection. With the knife's physical form thus prepared, the next step will be to enhance its dispelling magicks. No doubt much work yet awaits...

Dialogue
Perfect timin'. Been meanin' to have a word with ye.
I'm guessin' ye remember Gerolt's plan to combine 'is modern methods with that ancient knowledge 'e's uncovered.
Well, it sounds like 'e needs to examine that phantom weapon o' yers. Would ye mind obligin'?
Please note that the current quest “Under No Illusion” cannot be abandoned via the journal. Should you wish to do so, speak with Lydirceil.
Needed elsewhere? No skin off my nose.
Abandon the quest “Under No Illusion”?
Are you sure you wish to proceed?
Abandoning this quest will forfeit any delivered items. If you choose to proceed with the quest at a later date, you will need to collect the requisite ingredients again.
I understand and wish to abandon the quest.
Sounds like Gerolt can't make any headway until 'e sees yer weapon. Make sure ye show 'im sharpish.
I am also curious as to the current state of your weapon...
I'll be straight with ye, lass/lad. I'm worried about yer phantom weapon.
Part o' me hopes it's just the rum talkin', but I'll need to take a gander either way.
To proceed, you must first obtain a phantom weapon obscurum.
Go on, stow it away. I've seen enough.
Just as predicted, eh?
Indeed... I'm afraid the weapon is, in a sense, defective.
To think the isle's aether could deceive even my superlative perception! A potent force indeed.
That it may be, but now we know the plan'll work.
'Old on, 'old on! I'm strugglin' to keep up.
Fair enough. Perhaps ye could all do with a reminder.
D'ye remember what we've done to yer phantom weapon so far?
What will you say?
I believe you infused it with the isle's elusive energies.
Something involving the vast quantities of aether I gathered!
It's all flown right over my head, honestly...
Exactly. An' just like those energies, yer weapon's a shiftin', intangible phantom.
Not quite. All that aether went into enhancin' me gods-given hands, not the weapon directly. No wonder that's seared into yer memory, though—that was some hard graft...
Suppose I can't expect everyone to keep pace with me unmatched intellect... Let's go over the basics again.
In short, the aether permeatin' this isle is teemin' with illusory properties, an' highly potent to boot. It's what gives yer weapon its frightenin' power.
'Course, that power needed stabilizing, which is why we turned to ancient methods to keep the aether from dissipatin'. I thought that had done the trick, but apparently not...
Perhaps there was some flaw in the process?
It would appear so. While the isle's aether greatly elevated the weapon's capabilities, its volatile nature is limiting the potential for further enhancement.
We were able to verify as much by examining the adventurer's weapon earlier.
So yer sayin' there's more power to wring out o' the thing, but we just can't get to it?
Can't get to it yet!
Hence me grand plan...
To counteract the phantasmal energies infusin' the weapon, reveal its innate form, an' unleash its true potential!
A perfectly logical approach, but is such a thing possible?
For a smith of me peerless talent it is, and worthy of a little praise, I'd say. If ye want all the details, ye'll have to congratulate me on me brilliant plannin'—before I crack open another bottle o' rum an' forget all about it...
I'm impressed Gerolt figured out what was wrong with yer weapon. No doubt this'll inflate 'is ego even further...
I've become rather invested in this phantom weapon of yours. I shall continue to lend my aid!
Don't just stand there gawkin', lass/lad. Congratulate me on me inspired thinkin', else I'll raid the rum supply an' forget about the whole bleedin' thing!
Gerolt appears unwilling to divulge further details until he is showered with praise. Provide the acknowledgement he sorely craves and congratulate him on a plan well conceived.
Baskin' in yer admiration's thirsty work! Might crack open the rum after all.
Only jokin'... Truth is, I'm itchin' to get started.
Those phantasmal energies I mentioned have bound yer weapon in a complex illusion, preventin' it from truly shinin'.
By strippin' that illusion away an' revealin' the true essence o' the weapon, we solve the problem.
Stripping the illusion away...
Like using a glamour dispeller to remove the projected appearance of arms and armor? Hmmm. That might be feasible with the right apparatus.
Now yer talkin'. The best part is that we've already got just the thing for the job. Ain't that right?
What will you say?
Didn't the Archive recently fillet a glamoured fish?
A certain knife comes to mind...
We do?
Exactly! When the Archive cut into his catch with that rusty ol' knife, the glamour was dispelled an' the bleedin' thing shrank. That blade's the key!
Don't ye remember the Archive complainin' about his piddlin' catch? When he cut into the fish with that rusty ol' knife, the glamour was dispelled an' the bleedin' thing shrank. That blade's the key!
Thankfully, the little feller let me borrow it for a while.
Just as expected, the blade's imbued with unique dispellin' magicks. All told, it's quite the relic in its own right.
An' ye reckon we can use it to cut through the illusion surroundin' the phantom weapon?
Aye, but the isle's aether is vexin' stuff. Nothin' short o' the most potent dispellin' magick'll suffice.
Which is why we'll need to enhance the blade first!
What will you say?
Sounds eminently logical to me!
I don't know if I trust the Archive with a perfectly honed blade...
This whole process continues to confuse and astound me.
There aren't many who'd even consider ravagin' one o' the realm's greatest weapons with a magical ol' blade, that's for sure. Then again, most lack me capacity for innovation!
What harm could the little feller possibly do? Sounds like we oughta slice through those lingerin' doubts of yers while we're at it!
Ye'll never guess how I came up with the idea. There I was, daydreamin' about grilled fish after a few cups o' rum, when the Archive's knife sprang to mind...
Anyroad, we'll need to hone the blade to boost its dispellin' properties. Don't mind what we use, as long it's top-quality kit.
If it's blade-sharpening supplies we're after, I've heard nothing but the highest praise for monarch whetstones. They ought to sell them in Bayside Bevy.
Ancestral alloy ingots, ascendant twine, and majestic polish likewise command a good reputation. A skilled artisan should be more than capable of crafting them, though I'm sure they can also be purchased with sufficient gil.
Seein' as how the rest of us are still stuck on this bastard rock, this falls to you again, lass/lad. Hand over the goods when yer ready.
Details on obtaining each item are noted in your journal.
'Ate to stand around twiddlin' me thumbs while yer out there traipsin' about, but there ain't much else I can do. Good luck with yer search!
I look forward to seeing that humble blade enjoy a new lease on life. Perhaps its transformation will rival my own...
We're countin' on you to gather all four components for honin' the blade.
Some of the items Gerolt requires can be obtained in the following locations:
Monarch whetstones are sold in the markets of Tuliyollal.

Crackin' work! Time to get that knife honed to perfection.
Though I think I'll have a quick snifter o' rum to help me concentrate—don't want to mess this up!
Not sure why Gerolt's 'avin' a tipple at this juncture... Then again, I don't share 'is passion for rum.
Girding one's loins before an important ritual is a natural impulse. I daresay you yourself feast on the eve of battle, yes?
The wonders a drop o' rum'll do. Me mind's clear an' me hands are steady!
Here goes!
Some o' me finest work to date. Razor sharp an' overflowin' with aether!
With the blade honed to perfection, we can get to work on those dispellin' magicks!
