The Solstice is described as a natural Rejoining of the Shards with the Source.
About
With the Sundering the source was divided into 14 shards by Hydaelyn. And as long as she was the will of the star, this unnatural division was uphold for millennia. With Hydaelyn now gone, nature has started to reassert itself - the star wants to rejoin again. This rejoining is different then the one orchestrated by the Ascians, since the Solstice does not need human intervention. It's a natural process that will result in a complete rebirth of the source, annihilating mankind[1].
