FFVIII Reference or not?

This has the same name as the ultimate ability from Selphie's Slot limit break in FFVIII. The general FF wiki lists them as the same recurring ability.

In FFVIII, The End will kill anything immediately, including bosses and superbosses, only sparing the undead. It is Selphie's equivalent to Setzer's Joker's Death and Cait Sith's Game Over, both of which have a clear connection to the Reaper class as a whole: After landing on the jackpot combo, they summon a spirit of death that instantly kills enemies or allies. Cait Sith's summon even looks like a grim reaper.

But if it's named after Selphie's signature version? That's the absolute funniest one they could've picked. Instead of a grim reaper, The End summons a peaceful field in the mountains, with flowers and butterflies, and glittering motes of light... and then the enemy drops dead. Nothing grim or dark here! Only sweet, sweet victory! Hooray!

So, is it a reference, at least by virtue of being related to Game Over? Or are the differences between VIII's version and XIV's version too much to chalk up to comedic irony? Nellie (talk) 21:48, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
