Era

The modern recorded history of Eorzea is broken down into various Eras, each numbered in the order they are recorded. The various time periods are broken down into Astral and Umbral eras, the former being times of great prosperity and progress, and the latter being times of great hardship and destruction. The end of each Astral Era is marked by a Calamity of epic proportions, usually something that changes the very landscape in an irreparable way. These Calamities are often associated with one of the six basic Elements, and are preceded with years of mounting tension, war or conquest, and are considered to be the beginning of an Umbral era. The beginning of each Astral Era is often marked by observable periods of growth and recovery, when communities begin to come together and rebuild, forming great nations that would lead the continents future. It is believed that since each Calamity has been associated with one of the basic Elements, and six Calamities have come to pass, that the future of Eorzea is guaranteed to be full of prosperity and peace. This belief was dashed horribly upon the advent of the Seventh Umbral Calamity. It is now a debated topic amongst scholars whether or not any more Calamities could come to pass, and if the land could see repeated elements in their Astral or Umbral states.

Approximately 10.000 - 12.000 years ago.

The First Era

Following the Calamity of Wind, the First Era marks the rise of mankind.

The Second Era

After the Calamity of Lightning, the Second Era saw a raise in the faith to the gods.

The Third Era

Approximately 5.000 years ago, the time after the Calamity would see raise of the Allagan Empire.

The Fourth Era

After the Fall of the Allagan Empire, this Era is also known as "The Forgotten Age".

The Fifth Era

"The Age of Enlightenment" would see the rise of White and Black Magic, and accumulate into the War of the Magi.

The Events in this Era would lead towards the content of 1.0, accumulating in the Seventh Umbral calamity - The Fall of the Red Moon Dalamud.

The Seventh Era

The Events of 2.0 - A Realm Reborn - take place in the Seventh Umbral Era, taking place approximately 5 years after the Fall of Dalamud in the Seventh Umbral Calamity. The Seventh Astral Era begins with 2.1 - the Patches of A Realm Reborn.
