Lore

Situated in the west of Gyr Abania and bisected by the Velodyna River, the Fringes is a stretch of land which shares a border with the nation of Gridania. During the Empire’s occupation, this region saw the construction of Baelsar’s Wall, and was considered a perimeter to be held against the encroachment of the beast tribes and their territories.

East End

A forested area on the Gyr Abania side of the border, East End is a continuation of the Black Shroud, and thus shares much of the latter’s species of vegetation. Once a part of Gridania, trappers and botanists alike would often wander beneath its boughs. The place is better known to historians, however, as the bloody stage for the Autumn War.

Castrum Oriens

This Garlean stronghold had its beginnings as the construction base for Baelsar’s Wall. Following the Seventh Umbral Calamity, it was expanded to become a fully fledged castrum for the Black Wolf's renewed invasion efforts. Now, it is held by the Order of the Twin Adder and jointly garrisoned by Alliance forces.

Bittermill

Formerly a Gridanian hamlet, Bittermill was so named for the resident apothecaries who would pluck the local herbs and grind them into powder for use in various potions and poultices. The Empire later converted the settlement into a prison camp, and its captives were rumored to be the subjects of vile experiments.

Owyn’s Stash

In the time when East End still belonged to Gridania, this gloomy cave served as a storehouse for the illicitly brewed stock of an opportunist peddler. Faint fumes from Owyn’s potent liquor are said to linger still in the far corners of the cavern.

The Percipient One

As old as the Guardian Tree found in the Central Shroud, this ancient giant dominates the surrounding forest. Long ago, it was said to have harbored a great elemental, but not the slightest trace of the spirit’s presence remains. Over the two decades of the Empire’s occupation, it would seem that the Percipient One’s roots drank too deeply of some unsavory contaminant.

Dimwold

A gloomy forest occupying the southern expanse of East End. Drenched by the waters of Timmon Beck and numerous subterranean springs, the air beneath the boughs is laden with moisture, giving rise to a constant veil of light-smothering mist.

Fletcher’s Cabin

Once a seasonal retreat for local hunters, the building was abandoned when the Empire conquered Ala Mhigo. This weathered cabin also provided an isolated sanctuary for Sanche and her daughter, Gatty, who was but an infant when the pair fled Gridania years ago.

Pike Falls

Pike Falls refers to the majestic drops of the Velodyna River, as well as their immediate surrounds. Precipitously straight and narrow, the waterfalls are named for their resemblance to the pikes favored by foot soldiers of the old Ala Mhigan army.

Castellum Corvi

A waypoint on the road to Castrum Oriens, this structure—thought to be renamed during Nael van Darnus's temporary command of the XIVth Legion—mainly served as a guardhouse for imperial troops. Upon the defeat of the Empire’s forces at Baelsar’s Wall, the castellum was quickly abandoned by its occupants in anticipation of a committed Alliance advance.

The Comet's Tail

Fabled to have been formed by the passage of Rhalgr’s guiding star in the time of the Sixth Umbral Calamity, this stony corridor is aglow with an ethereal incandescence. Though the legend is the more romantic interpretation, scholars have determined that the emission of light is caused by a unique mineral deposit buried within the rock.

The Pall of Clarity

Standing upon this bridge which spans the Velodyna River, one can bathe in the spray of the nearby waterfall, and experience a cleansing of both body and spirit. It is said that the monks of the Fist of Rhalgr would visit this very spot to practice their meditation techniques.

The Velodyna River

One of Eorzea's mightiest rivers, the Velodyna rushes forth from its source in Abalathia’s Spine. Its waters teem with life, but as the natural border between the Black Shroud and Gyr Abania, numerous historical conflicts have steeped its banks in death. In political terms, the river also delineates the shared boundary of the nations of Gridania and Ala Mhigo.

The Striped Hills

According to Sharlayan scholars, the horizontal stripes which mark the landscape east of the Velodyna River are evidence that the land once laid beneath the sea. The older layers are thought to have gradually risen above the surface, pushed upwards by immense pressures during the formation of Abalathia’s Spine.

Schism

In time out of mind, seeking to approach the sublimity of Rhalgr, a man began pummeling a mountain with his fists. After decades of nigh ceaseless striking, he succeeded in forming a great cavern in the mountain. This nameless soul is revered as the first monk of the Fist of Rhalgr, and the temple was later built here, within the hollow he had created.

The Circles of Answering

A training ground for monks, adherents would gather here when thunderstorms lashed the countryside with rain, wind, and lightning. Sitting in a circle and exposed to the elements, the monks would meditate on the truths proffered by the Destroyer—an experience said to have brought enlightenment to no few of Rhalgr’s disciples.

Gyr Kehim

A monastery established some three centuries ago by Heimar high priest of the Fist of Rhalgr. In the ancient Mhachi language, the name means “one’s mirage”—a reference to the arduous training that monks underwent to face their inner self in their quest to master both body and mind.

Virdjala

The arid valley to the east of Castellum Velodyna has been home to the Ananta people since antiquity. That the name for this stark canyon translates to “pristine” is characteristic of the Ananta and their tendency to perceive the world around them in terms of beauty.

Castellum Velodyna

Built upon the bridge over the Velodyna River, this imperial fortification serves as a critical waypoint for supplies, connecting the many military installations to the east with Baelsar’s Wall to the west. Rising sky-high from the center is a great tower that provides moorage for airships.

The Peering Stones

The village of the Miqo'te M tribe, perched high atop a crag. Its position affords inhabitants a commanding view of their entire territory, and neither trespasser nor prey may travel through unnoticed. As the Garleans view hunting cultures with contempt, imperial rule has proven harder upon them than most.

Vira Nilya

This settlement belongs to the Vira faction of Ananta who chose to fight alongside the Ala Mhigan Resistance in a bid to break free of the Empire’s subjugation. The founding of Vira Nilya was an important step to distance themselves from the Qalyana, the larger of the two tribes.

Qalyana Nilya

As the stronghold of the dominant Qalyana tribe, this settlement is built on a far grander scale than that of Vira Nilya. It is interesting to note that in the Ananta tongue, “Qalyana” equates to “beauty” or “virtue,” whilst “Vira” is used to describe one who exhibits bravery.

Djanan Qhat

A distinctive castle of clay built by the Ananta, housing within its depths a shrine to the goddess Lakshmi, Lady of Bliss. For this reason it was given its name, which means “mother’s bed” in the Ananta tongue. At present it is occupied by the dominant Qalyana tribe.

The Yawn

Writhing with a mysterious pink substance, this cavernous hollow was torn from the earth during the titanic struggle between Omega and Shinryu. In a bid to bring down its steely foe, the primal unleashed a beam of all-consuming light from its maw the slightest veering of which could have been disastrous for the nearby M tribe village. [1]
