==Steps==
*Speak with [[Taynor]].
*Relive [[Nyelbert]] and [[Ardbert]]'s initial adventure!
*Speak with [[Cerigg]].

==Journal==
*Cerigg has good tidings he would share with you.

*Taynor shares with you the memories that have finally returned to him. As the boy tells it, he and Nyelbert were born over a century ago as scions to a consortium of powerful mages, the leaders of which sought to master the art of opening portals to other worlds, that they might summon powerful entities from beyond. To that end, they were tutored in the arcane arts from an early age, their skills employed in dangerous experiments. One day, one of these experiments went awry, and Taynor was sucked into a rift between worlds, where he remained until you rescued him. Due to vagaries of travel between worlds largely beyond your comprehension, what felt like a relatively short span of time for the boy amounted to some one hundred years in the world he had left behind. Taynor shares with you another piece of fortunate news─along with his memories, he has also begun to recall the incantations he had learned─incantations which might serve you well in your confrontation with Phronesis. You and Cerigg set out for the Fields of Amber, where you intend to keep the boy safe as he puts his spells to the test.

*The boy succeeds in opening a portal to other worlds, if only for fleeting moments, before you are paid a sudden and shocking visit by the fearsome sin eater who is your quarry. Taynor succeeds in pushing away one of Phronesis's hollows and saving Cerigg from a fearsome fate, when suddenly the power of the Echo grants you a vision of the past. You bear witness to yet another vision from a century prior, wherein a youthful Nyelbert begrudgingly lends his strength to the warrior Ardbert and his band to fell a dreadful bovine beast that has risen up from the bowels of the earth to wreak havoc on dwarven mines. What course did the battle take so many years ago?

*The companions having triumphed over the great beast, Nyelbert confesses that he wished to claim the sorcerous stone in the fiend's possession and harness its energies to save his friend Taynor, but ends up tearfully destroying the stone when it is revealed that failing to do so would destroy the mountain and put countless lives in danger. In the end, he joins up with the party of adventurers in earnest, with Ardbert promising to stay by Nyelbert's side until they can together find a way to return Taynor to this world─a happy ending that, sadly, was not to be. You regain consciousness back in the present with Phronesis nowhere to be found, and Cerigg and Taynor clearly concerned for your well-being. Together, you decide to return to Mord Souq, so that you might recuperate and share with your friends all you have learned.

*Hearing your tale of the visions you saw, and recalling his own experience locking gazes with Phronesis on the battlefield, Taynor is at long last able to accept and make peace with the knowledge that the sin eater and Nyelbert are indeed one and the same. He resolves to join you and Cerigg in your quest to bring Phronesis down, that his old friend might finally know peace. Together, the three of you vow to redouble your training efforts, that you will be fully prepared for the confrontation that lies ahead.

==Walkthrough==
'''Important: Do not use the limit break until the game prompts you to! Using it too early will instantly fail the duty!'''

* Near the end of the boss fight with Bovian, when he readies 200,000-mina Swing, stand behind the tank (Ardbert) and use the '''limit break''' skill, Falling Star. By doing so, you will receive a second limit break to use immediately afterward.

{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
===Accepting the quest===
Cerigg: Good news, friend! Taynor here has told me that his memories are starting to come back to him.
Cerigg: There's one recollection in particular he says he's eager to discuss with the two of us. Tell us, lad...what is it?

-cutscene start
Taynor: As time goes by, memories of my earlier days return to me piece by piece.
Taynor: Nyelbert and I were born to members of a great consortium of mages. From our earliest years, we were tutored in the magical arts by some of the realm's greatest scholars.
Taynor: The consortium's leaders sought to find a way to open a hole in time and space─a portal to other worlds from which they could summon forth beasts of great power. Nyelbert and I were chosen to participate in the research.

Cerigg: Summoning great beasts from beyond our world? You're a mage, [Forename]...is that even possible?

Question: What will you say?
> Perhaps he speaks of voidsent...?
Cerigg: Voidsent? Never heard of them, but I'll take that answer as a yes. Mages come up with the damndest ideas, eh? And yet, I don't understand. Whyever would they use two young boys for such a dangerous experiment?

> Perish the thought...
Cerigg: Indeed. Even were it possible, I shudder to think of the nightmares that would emerge from beyond the rift. Furthermore, I don't understand─whyever would they use two young boys for such a dangerous experiment?

---
Taynor: The beasts our masters sought to summon reside in the planes most distant from our own. Reaching across such a great distance requires a tremendous store of innate aetherial power.
Taynor: And so our masters set about to breed the perfect mage. Marriages were arranged to wed the mightiest members of the consortium to one another, in hopes that they would bring forth children of theretofore unheard-of magical aptitude. Finally, they succeeded...

Cerigg: And so you were born...and Nyelbert.

Taynor: ...Indeed. From even before we could speak, we were taught the complex incantations required to breach the boundaries between worlds.
Taynor: We practiced these spells day after day, night after night for what seemed an eternity. At long last, we were deemed ready to attempt the summoning.
Taynor: Sadly, the experiment ended in failure. The pull from beyond the rift was too strong to resist, and I was sucked into a hollow of my own creation.
Taynor: There I remained trapped─alone and adrift in that empty void─until [Forename] called me back to this world. Alas, over a century had passed since that fateful day...

Cerigg: That's the one thing I still don't understand. If so many years have truly passed, why is it that you have not aged even a whit?

Taynor: I cannot say for certain. But I remember the words of one of my teachers. “The rift is not unlike a border between countless worlds─a place that exists beyond time and space.”
Taynor: If it is true that the rift exists outside of our concept of time, then it is all too possible that even seconds spent in that empty pocket could correspond to months, years, or decades in our world.

Cerigg: And so you've returned to us just as you were that day, even while over a century has passed for the rest of us.
Cerigg: But why didn't Nyelbert save you? Shouldn't it have been as simple as opening up another portal to the void where you were trapped?

Taynor: I fear that would be close to impossible. Opening the portal and reaching as far into the rift as we did required all of our energies to be focused in unison.

Cerigg: So in losing you, not only did Nyelbert lose his friend, he lost his only chance at saving you. Talk about being dealt a rough hand...

Taynor: Fear not─I have good news to share as well. I do believe I've managed to recall the incantations needed to summon and manipulate the hollows.
Taynor: Summoning beasts from beyond the rift is far beyond my powers, but I just might be able to seal up the hollows Phronesis so enjoys summoning. What say you, friends? Shall I give it a try?

Cerigg: Oho! Now that's music to my ears! But let's not be too hasty. After all, the last time you tried to use this magic, there were some...complications, to say the least.
Cerigg: Yes, we must take the necessary precautions before confronting Phronesis in earnest. Let us meet outside the village, where Taynor can test out his magic safe from harm.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Cerigg: Ever wonder what the world looked like in those days before the Flood? I suppose we could ask the boy...

-optional end

===Speaking with Taynor===

-cutscene start
Cerigg: Wicked white! You did it, lad!

Taynor: Sadly, I have not the strength to reach further beyond, nor keep the portal open for more than a few moments. No, I will need further training before I can face...

Cerigg: Phronesis! Where in the hells did that bastard come from!?
Cerigg: Damn it all, I'm too close! I can feel it pulling me in!

Taynor: No, Nyelbert! These are my friends! You mustn't...hurt them!

====Echo====
Lamitt: ...This isn't good. The cave-in's completely sealed off the tunnel behind us. We've no recourse but to press on without our companions.

Ardbert: You heard her. What'll it be?

Nyelbert: I suppose it falls to us to slay the beast and collect the bounty. Perhaps you and your band would care to take the lead?

Ardbert: Hah, spare me your japes. You've no intention of giving up your prize. Mind you, I too made a promise to my companions─a promise I mean to keep.

Cylva: Bah. I told you that splitting up was a bad idea. If Branden and Renda-Rae were here, this second-rate spellcaster would be no match for us.

Ardbert: Now, now, Cylva. Let's not forget who our true foe is here. Lamitt─you're certain that if we slay this monstrosity, the cave-ins will cease?

Lamitt: According to the miners, the beast was first sighted on the same day the tremors began, its very presence sucking the mountain dry of its aether.
Lamitt: We dwarves know these caves as well as we know our own bodies. Trust me.

Ardbert: Then I suppose we'd best make short work of it before everything comes crashing down.
Ardbert: Hey! Where do you think you're going!?

Nyelbert: ...My apologies. I took your ceaseless prattling as an invitation to proceed on my own.

Ardbert: Think yourself clever, do you? You've uncommon confidence to think you can fell the beast without aid. Answer me this: why is it you are so intent on claiming the bounty for your own?

Nyelbert: The bounty...? Why, indeed...
Nyelbert: At any rate, unless you've a mind to stand around here until we all get crushed, we'd best be moving on, yes?

Ardbert: Finally, something we can agree on. And so I have a proposal: what say we band together until our battle here is won?
Ardbert: The tremors grow stronger─no doubt a cave-in is imminent. Let us vanquish the enemy with our combined strength and quit this place before it becomes our tomb.

Nyelbert: ...Until the battle is won, then. After that, I go my own way.

====Solo Duty====
Ardbert: Your aid is most welcome, Nyelbert. Let us make short work of the beast, and take our leave of this place while we still can.

Nyelbert: ...Indeed.

Ardbert: They come! Nyelbert, we will draw our foe's attack!
Ardbert: It would seem we're not the only ones stuck in here, eh?

Lamitt: I have a bad feeling about this...

Ardbert: The leftmost one is mine! Cylva, you take its friend on the right!

Cylva: Consider it done. Have at you, fiends!

Lamitt: What's this? It leads deeper within...?

Ardbert: We really should have asked for a map. Not that it'd have been much use after all the cave-ins...

Cylva: Well, aren't you a big boy...
Cylva: Still think you could have managed on your own, mage?

Nyelbert: Perhaps...it would have been more of a struggle than I expected.

Lamitt: That's him. He's the one who drinks of the mines' aether.

Ardbert: All right, let's put this oversized bull out to pasture. Cylva, Lamitt, Nyelbert...with me!

Nyelbert: My magicks are yours...for now.

Cylva: I will take the front. The battle is on!
Cylva: It summons others of its ilk? We should dispatch the small fry, and quickly!

Ardbert: Leave it to me!
Ardbert: Gah, this one looks like trouble!
Ardbert: That should do it, Cylva!
Ardbert: Another earthquake? This bodes ill...

Lamitt: Our foe's up to something! Stand back, my friends!
Lamitt: To my side! I'll heal your wounds!

Ardbert: Take cover behind the rocks! You don't want to bear the full brunt of it!
Ardbert: Damn it, here it comes again! Get back!

Cylva: I sense unholy power... Get behind me, friends! Quickly!

Ardbert: Cylva...are you all right!? Damn it, we can't keep this up much longer. Strike with all of your strength!

-cutscene end

-cutscene start
Ardbert: We've done it! Now, to find ourselves a way out...
Ardbert: The tremors continue...? But why!? The fiend has been vanquished, and its aether returned to the mountain!

Lamitt: We were wrong... No, it was not the creature itself that was causing the quakes...

Nyelbert: Ah, yes...the crystal courses with nigh-inconceivable power. A vast wellspring of aether accumulated over the ages. Yes, the beast was but a hungry creature, drawn here by the stone...as was I.

Ardbert: ...You had no interest in the bounty all along.

Nyelbert: The stone has been left unchecked for too long. The sheer volume of aether it houses now is so vast and overwhelming it threatens to bring the entire mountain down.
Nyelbert: For how many years have I searched for it? This precious relic that could afford me the power needed to save my friend...

Lamitt: You mean to take the stone from this place?

Cylva: But then, what would happen to the mountain?

Lamitt: If the aether is not returned to the earth, it is but a matter of time until the mine collapses. The miners, those who live at the foot of the mountain─countless lives would be lost.

Ardbert: There's no time! What can we do!?

Nyelbert: Taynor... My friend...
Nyelbert: >> Damn it... Damn it all! <<

Ardbert: ...The tremors have stopped.

Nyelbert: Taynor...pray forgive me! I promise you this: as long as I walk this earth, I shall never, never give up hope...

Ardbert: The stone was yours to do with as you pleased, and still you chose the fate of many over that of your friend. In return for your sacrifice, I would make you an offer.
Ardbert: Come with us, and let us join you in your search for a means to save your comrade. The life of an adventurer isn't an easy one, but I daresay you strike me as the sort who just might enjoy it.
Ardbert: So, what say you? We'll travel the realm together and lend our strength to whatever unfortunate souls we encounter along the way. And who knows, before you know it, we just might stumble upon a way to rescue your Taynor.

Nyelbert: I...I would like that very much.

Nyelbert: Taynor...forgive me. I may have failed you today, but mark my words: for as long as I walk this land, I will not abandon hope. I will find a way to bring you back to us...
Nyelbert: But today I find myself in the company of new companions. And for now, I must lend them my strength, just as they lent theirs to me...
====Echo End====

Taynor: [Forename]! Are you all right!?

Cerigg: Worry not─Phronesis is long gone. I launched a few arrows in its direction while it was distracted by Taynor's spell, and it just stole away.
Cerigg: Anyhow, I'm just glad you're awake and on your feet again. Come now─let's hurry back to Mord Souq before the bastard has a change of heart and comes back for us.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Taynor: Could it be that Nyelbert came back...for me?

-optional end

===Speaking with Cerigg===

-cutscene start
Cerigg: You really gave us a scare back there, clutching your head in pain with a deadly sin eater in plain sight. Let me guess─you had another one of your visions, didn't you?
Cerigg: White take me...so that's how Nyelbert and Ardbert met up. Just goes to show you that in times of crisis, even the bitterest of rivals can turn fast friends.
Cerigg: Now let's see if I have this straight. Nyelbert made it his life's mission to save Taynor here. Knowing that his own energies wouldn't suffice, he went in search of a relic that would afford him the aetheric power needed to reach beyond this world.
Cerigg: ...And deep in the mines that day, he found it. Yet in the end, he decided to sacrifice the stone─and his own cause─to save the lives of the countless innocents who called the mountain home. And so did he take his first step down the path of a hero...a Warrior of Light.

Taynor: So that's why he came back to this place. Why he still summons the hollows as he did so many years ago...

Cerigg: Aye, there can be no doubting it. Even now that he's become a sin eater─bereft of memory, reason, and any sense of his own actions─the ghastly shell of what was once Nyelbert still haunts the wastelands, searching for a way to bring back his old friend...

Taynor: I only knew him as a child, and the whole idea of sin eaters and Warriors of Light...it was all so new to me. Even as the pieces came together, I could not truly believe that Nyelbert and this...Phronesis...were one and the same.
Taynor: But when our gazes first met, standing out there in the wastes...in an instant, I knew it without question. This was my friend─a friend who had been searching for me for all these years...
Taynor: At last, I know what I must do. I must stop Phronesis, that my dear friend may finally find peace.

Question: What will you say?
> I would do the same.
> Together, we can do this.

---
Taynor: Thank you, my friends! In the battle, I was able to push Phronesis's hollow away from Cerigg─if only for a short distance. With more training, I'm certain I can learn to close them up entirely!

Cerigg: After all we've already seen from you, I've no reason to doubt you. If you're game, so are we.
Cerigg: Finally, some cause for hope, eh? But still, we must exercise caution. The last time the boy worked his magic, our foe showed up faster than you can say “Phronesis.”
Cerigg: While this might be simple coincidence, the likelihood is high that the casting of the spell itself summoned the sin eater to us. You'd best avoid casting any similar incantations until we're prepared for the final confrontation.
Cerigg: I want you to stay close for now. Devote yourself to your studies, and hone your skills to whatever degree you can in the safety of the village. In the meantime, [Forename] and I will redouble our training efforts as well.
Cerigg: Should we succeed in finding a way to counteract the hollows, it will come down to our firepower versus our foe's. We must be at full strength for the battle, lest we allow victory to slip between our fingers.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Taynor: I was just talking with Cerigg, when I had a thought. If Nyelbert's regrets truly live on inside Phronesis, might I not be able to reach him somehow? To convince him to leave us in peace?
Taynor: The words had barely left my mouth when he shot me a glare that pierced me like a dagger. “Expect reason or mercy from a sin eater, and it will be the death of you,” he said. “Though it may have the form of a man, its mind is that of a beast that lives only to feed on our flesh.”
Taynor: It would seem I was a bit too idealistic. Clearly, I still have much to learn about this world...
*Speak with [[Taynor]].
*Speak with the [[Savvy Merchant|savvy merchant]].
*Speak with a [[Concerned Carer|carer]] at [[the Inn at Journey's Head]].
*Speak with [[Cerigg]].
*Search for Taynor.
*Rescue Taynor.
*Speak with the [[Forlorn Boy|forlorn boy]].
*Speak with Cerigg at [[Mord Souq]].

==Journal==
*Cerigg wears a flustered expression on his face.

*As Cerigg tells it, the child who you rescued from the hollow is resting safely in Mord Souq, but there is a rub: the boy seemingly remembers nothing save his name─Taynor. Cerigg sent him for a stroll around town to see if it might help to jog his memories, and encourages you to check in on him. Track down Taynor and see if he has met with any success in piecing together his past.

*You and Cerigg speak further with Taynor, who unfortunately can still recall nothing of where he came from. Cerigg further explains that according to the carer who examined him, the boy apparently possesses considerable magical powers. Drawing the conclusion that he doubtless has a master or tutor somewhere out there, the bounty hunter proposes speaking with a traveling merchant in town to see if anything might be gleaned as to your young friend's origins.

*The merchant tells of something he overheard when sojourning at the Inn at Journey's Head─that of an ill-fated mage who was attacked by a sin eater and was separated from his child in the process. Believing that this could very well be Taynor's father, the three of you resolve to make for the Inn and investigate further.

*You arrive at the Inn to learn that the son of the wounded mage has already been found─the man was not Taynor's father after all. The kindly boy offers to show Taynor around the premises in hopes of further rekindling his memories. Once the boy is gone, Cerigg, dismayed at the unfortunate turn of events, proposes entrusting Taynor to the care of another so that the two of you might return to hunting Phronesis─and continue the search for Taynor's family in the process. Cerigg offers to break the news to the unfortunate child himself, and you agree to accompany him.

*Events have taken yet another distressing turn, as Taynor is nowhere to be found. As it happens, your young charge got into a heated quarrel with the other boy, and subsequently dashed off on his own to the gods know where. Together with Cerigg, you make for the Fields of Amber, that you might track down Taynor before he comes to harm.

*Arriving in the Fields of Amber, you find Taynor under attack by nasty-looking sin eaters. Vanquish the fiends before they devour the poor, frightened child.

*You successfully dispatch the sin eaters and rescue Taynor from harm. In the aftermath of the battle, you are granted a vision of Taynor's past through the power of the Echo. There, you see that the boy was a young mage training under the same teacher as Nyelbert, one of the erstwhile Warriors of Light who now roams the area as the baleful Phronesis. Understandably perplexed by these recent developments, Cerigg proposes a return to the Inn at Journey's Head, where you might discuss matters further in safer environs.

*Back at the Inn, Taynor and the other boy apologize to each other and make their peace, and the latter departs for his new home at the Crystarium. The remaining three of you make plans to return to Mord Souq, where you might think over the knowledge you have recently gleaned and unravel the mysteries behind the enigmatic child's past.

*Back at Mord Souq, Cerigg explains to Taynor that, as bizarre as it may sound, the events of his memory must have taken place over one hundred years ago. Convinced now that your young companion is the key to vanquishing the dread Phronesis, Cerigg has a change of heart and proposes that the two of you officially take him in. Taynor welcomes the offer, thanking the two of you profusely for your kindness and promising that he will lend you whatever aid he can. For your part, you resolve to further hone your command of the magical arts while waiting for the lad's memories to recover further.

==Dialogue==
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
===Accepting the quest===
Cerigg: Ah, there you are. You'll be happy to know that the boy is awake, and seems to be no worse for the wear. Physically speaking, at least...
Cerigg: There's just one rub, you see. He has no recollection of where he came from, or just how he managed to get swallowed up into the void.
Cerigg: In fact, other than his own name─Taynor─he can't remember much of anything at all.
Cerigg: He seems a good lad, mind you─eats my half-arsed cooking with a smile and nary a word of complaint. Yet I reckon he's hurting inside, and badly. We must reunite him with his parents with all due speed.
Cerigg: I suggested that he go for a stroll around Mord Souq, in the hopes that the sights might help to jog his memories. He can't have wandered far─why don't you go check up on him?

-optional start
Cerigg: I realize this is something of a detour, but we simply can't leave a poor amnesic orphan to fend for himself, now can we? Let's find the boy a safe home as soon as we can.

-optional end

===Speaking with Taynor===

-cutscene start
Taynor: Do not tell me...you are the one who rescued me from the flow, yes? I feel from you the same warmth that reached out to me when I was adrift in the aether.

Cerigg: Well, I'll be damned. The boy's a sharp one.
Cerigg: And that's not the least of it. The carer who examined him said they could feel great power welling up from within him. Despite his young age, Taynor here seems to possess a remarkable command of the magical arts.

Taynor: Perhaps I do, and yet...I cannot say. Try as I might, I can recall nothing of who I am, or where I came from. Only the darkness...

Cerigg: No need for apologies, boy. You did well just to make it back to us. Speaking of which, can you remember anything at all of what you felt when you were adrift in the void?

Taynor: That I remember...or at least I think I do. I recall a vague sensation of someone passing alongside me. Indeed, I believe this is what roused me from my slumber.

Cerigg: Hmm... If the hollows truly are a gate between worlds, that would mean that someone recently traveled from ours to another─or from another to ours... But that's not possible...or is it?

Question: What will you say?
> You'd be surprised...
Cerigg: You know something I don't, friend? Worry not─I won't pry for details.

> Don't be ridiculous.
Cerigg: That's what I thought. Fair enough. The again, traveling between worlds ain't exactly my area of expertise...

---
Cerigg: Ah, well. No sense racking our brains over matters beyond our comprehension. Let's concentrate on what we ''can'' do─namely, finding the boy here a home. No doubt his memories will come back to him in due time.

Taynor: You'd truly do that? For me? But the two of you have already saved my life. I couldn't possibly burden you any further...

Cerigg: Hah, it's no burden at all! Besides, if we can figure out just who you are─and where you came from─it just might lead us to the answers we seek.
Cerigg: Now, let's consider the options. One possibility is that you're an orphan─all alone in this world, with not a soul to care for or look after you.
Cerigg: And yet, this seems unlikely. Yes, the mystical powers you possess say otherwise. If you are truly as skilled in magic as they say, then it stands to reason that someone trained you in the art.
Cerigg: Who this master of yours is─and whether you are of their blood, or simply received their tutelage─this I cannot say. But either way, I'm certain they're worried sick about you.

Taynor: If that truly is so...I would very much like to meet this person, too.

Cerigg: That settles it, then─let's get down to business. I took the liberty of inquiring around Mord Souq and the Crystarium. Unfortunately, there have been no reports of missing persons matching Taynor's description.
Cerigg: Which means that we have no choice but to take our search elsewhere. I know of a merchant in town whose travels often take him far afield. Let us have a talk with him and see if he's heard any helpful rumors.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Taynor: The two of you are far too kind. I cannot thank you enough...

Cerigg: Impressive how Taynor's managed to keep himself together, eh? The boy's mature beyond his years, no doubt.

-optional end

===Speaking with the savvy merchant===
Savvy Merchant: Rumors of a missing boy, you say? Funny that you ask. It's a long shot, I reckon, but I overheard something the other day that might be of use.
Savvy Merchant: On my way to Mord Souq, I stopped over at the Inn at Journey's Head. There, I met an ailing mage. As the carers told it, he'd been ambushed by a sin eater, and was separated from his child in the battle.

Cerigg: Bloody hells...could it be!? If the sin eater that attacked the poor man was Phronesis, that would explain everything!

Taynor: This man you speak of...he could be my father? We must go to him at once!

Cerigg: Agreed. I only hope that the man is...no, there is no point in presuming the worst. Let us make for the Inn, and see what the carers there can tell us.

-optional start
Savvy Merchant: The man was in rough shape, I fear. For the child's sake, I hope he's doing better than when I last saw him...

Cerigg: I just hope whatever we find here puts a smile on the poor boy's face.

Taynor: My father is here? But this place is...

-optional end

===Speaking with a carer at the Inn at Journey's Head===

-cutscene start
Cerigg: Ho there! I hear there's a mage in your care who's lost his boy. Well, I do believe we have him right here!

Concerned Carer: Hm? I fear there must be some mistake. The boy in question has already been found. This is him...right here.

Taynor: What...!? So it wasn't my father after all...?

Concerned Carer: This boy with you...he, too, has been separated from his family?

Cerigg: Just so. We heard that a man here was looking for his son, and we just hoped...alas, it seems it wasn't meant to be.

Taynor: But there are many people here, yes? Might I ask around and see if any of the others are my family?

Concerned Carer: But of course. Yet many of the people here are quite ill, and in many cases, in considerable pain. It is not a place for a young child to walk around unattended.

Cerigg: Indeed it's not. Guess that means either myself or [Forename] here should accompany him...

Forlorn Boy: I'll go with him. The walk might help me, er, take my mind off things.

Cerigg: Not a bad idea, if the lad doesn't mind. I reckon Taynor would rather be with someone of his own age.
Cerigg: Take his mind off things...? Speaking of which, how is the boy's father holding up?

Concerned Carer: I fear the poor man has already departed on his journey. He is a man no longer.
Concerned Carer: The child insisted upon staying by his father's side until the last. I permitted this out of respect for him, though part of me regrets the choice. None so young should suffer such horrors.
Concerned Carer: It was some small solace to learn that he has living relatives who reside at the Crystarium. In fact, I was just making preparations to escort him there myself.

Cerigg: ...I see. Reckon we should also find someone to look after Taynor as well.
Cerigg: Don't get me wrong, friend─I haven't given up on the prospect of finding the boy's family. But we have no other leads, and a deadly sin eater still on the loose.
Cerigg: If the lad tags along with us every step of the way, he's far more likely to end up dead or worse than to ever reunite with his family.
Cerigg: Here's what I propose: we find someone to watch after Taynor for the time being, get back on the hunt, and gather whatever clues we can about his origins along the way.

Question: What will you say?
> Is there not more we can do?
Cerigg: I, too, wish there was more we could do for the lad. But think of it this way─if we don't do something about that damned sin eater, who knows how many poor children will end up like Taynor?

> Very well. But we must see that he is safe.
Cerigg: Aye, that goes without saying. Let us have a talk with the proprietor of the Wandering Stairs. He's a kindly enough chap, and knows damn near everyone in these parts. With any luck, he'll be able to direct us to a willing and able guardian.

---
Cerigg: Look, I don't like this any more than you do. But it's the best we can do for the boy given our circumstances. At any rate, let's find him and share the news. Don't worry: it's my decision, and I intend to take responsibility for it.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Concerned Carer: Forgive me, my friends. I wish there was more we could do for the child, but our resources are already stretched terribly thin. I wish you luck in finding his family.

Forlorn Boy: I...I'm sorry! I-It's all my fault...

-optional end

===Speaking with Cerigg===
Cerigg: Bad news, friend. It seems the two young ones got into a quarrel of sorts, and Taynor's up and run away.
Cerigg: Seems the lad mentioned how he'd come out from one of the hollows. The other boy put two and two together and figured he'd been attacked by a sin eater.

Forlorn Boy: Then I said...I said...my dad was attacked by a sin eater, and then he turned into one himself. So I asked...what if...what if you turn into a sin eater too?
Forlorn Boy: Taynor's face went all white. He kept saying, “What do you mean? What do you mean?”─over, and over, and over again. I just...I couldn't take it anymore.
Forlorn Boy: Before I knew it, I was shouting at him, “Shut up! Just shut up! I bet you're turning into a sin eater already!” Why? Why did I say such a mean and nasty thing!?

Cerigg: Don't be so hard on yourself, lad. Both of you have had a rough go of it these past few days. Nobody could blame either one of you for feeling a bit on edge.
Cerigg: But we must hurry and find Taynor before he comes to harm. Let's split up: I'll search to the west, and you take the east. And be careful out there!

-optional start
Forlorn Boy: You'll bring Taynor back, won't you? I just...I just want to tell him I'm sorry.

-optional end

===Rescuing Taynor===

-cutscene start
Cerigg: When I heard the clamor of battle, I feared the worst, but I see that you have everything under control. Are you okay, lad?

Taynor: F-Forgive me... I...I don't deserve this kindness.
Taynor: I...I was just so scared. I was worried about what would become of me if I never recovered my memories, and then I started thinking, what if I ended up like that boy's father? What if it's already happening to me...?

Cerigg: That's one matter you needn't worry yourself with. The carer who examined you told me as much. You suffered no direct wounds─you're in no more danger of turning into a sin eater than [Forename] or me.

Taynor: Is...is that so. That's good to hear. But I...I must apologize to that boy. I should have known better than to badger him about such things...especially after what happened to his father.

Cerigg: Funny thing, that─he was saying the same thing about you. You both have good hearts, lad─and you've been through more than any man should. There's no need to be ashamed about your feelings.

Taynor: There is...still so much I do not understand about this world. Why does no one here know of me? Am I doomed to be alone for the rest of my days?
Taynor: Why...why must it be this way!? If only I could remember something...''anything''! I'm sick of not knowing who I am! I'm sick of being alone!

====Echo====
x@Mage Headmaster: Now it's your turn, Taynor. And do not be disheartened by your last attempt─even the greatest of mages have known failure.

Nyelbert@Bright Boy: Your command of magic is the equal of my own. If I can succeed, there is no reason why you cannot. Free your mind of worry, and focus.

Taynor: Thank you, Nyelbert. I shall try my best.
====Echo End====

Cerigg: Wicked white! Are you all right, [Forename]!?

Taynor: ...I remember now. I was standing here on these blighted plains, my head hung low in shame. Then, Nyelbert turned to me with a smile and heartening words...
Taynor: Nyelbert... Why does the name sound so familiar?

Cerigg: I reckon we've much to discuss, but not in this godsforsaken place. Let's head back to the Inn and see if we can't get to the bottom of this.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Cerigg: We have much to discuss, but first, we should let the two boys make their peace.

Taynor: I do hope he'll forgive me...

-optional end

===Speaking with the forlorn boy===
Forlorn Boy: Taynor! Are you all right!? I'm so sorry... I shouldn't have said those nasty things...

Taynor: Forgive me for reacting as I did. I'm...I'm fine. In fact, I seem to have recovered some of my memories...

Forlorn Boy: Really!? That's wonderful! Maybe...maybe you won't feel so scared and alone anymore.
Forlorn Boy: I'm leaving to go live in the Crystarium with my relatives. Promise me you'll come visit? I mean, after you get your memories back and all, of course...

Taynor: It's a promise. Until next time, my friend.

Cerigg: I knew that you two would work things out. Now, let us return to Mord Souq. We have more than our share of questions that need answering.

-optional start
Taynor: I cannot help but feel I also made a promise to that boy in my memories... Nyelbert, was it?

-optional end

===Speaking with Cerigg at Mord Souq===
Cerigg: As I saw it, first you fainted all of a sudden. When you came to, a portion of Taynor's memories had returned. What in the world happened out there?

-cutscene start
Cerigg: The power to look into the past, eh?
Cerigg: And you're certain that what [Forename] described matches up with your recollection of the past?
Cerigg: I don't know how to break this to you, lad, but...your friend Nyelbert that was with you that day? He's no ordinary boy.
Cerigg: He's none other than the very man who became Phronesis─one of those godsdamned Warriors of Light. If he was just a young child in your memories, that means that what you saw took place over one hundred years ago!
Cerigg: Would that it were just a coincidence─another boy with the same name. But no, judging from the formidable command of magic...we can only assume it was him.

Taynor: On the way back, I managed to recall some more...about Nyelbert and myself.
Taynor: We were taken in by a group of mages...a consortium of sorts. They were searching for a means to open a hole to another world, and were recruiting young children with high magical aptitude for the task. Nyelbert and myself were the two they chose...

Cerigg: You can't be serious! And yet, that would explain the sin eater's ability to summon those damned hollows...
Cerigg: And if you possess the same knowledge and training as Nyelbert did, it could also explain why you were able to survive in there all that time. But what I don't understand is...why haven't you aged at all?

Taynor: I cannot say for sure. And yet my memories...they are slowly coming back to me. In time, I may be able to help you find a way to close the hollows.

Cerigg: You'd be a lifesaver if you could. But don't overburden yourself─you're still recovering, after all. In the meantime, don't worry: [Forename] and I will see that you're safe.
Cerigg: I'd thought Taynor was just a victim of the sin eater. To think he was actually ''friends'' with the man himself...er, back when he was still a man. This can't be simple coincidence.
Cerigg: Yes, I'm convinced of it now─the child holds the key to defeating Phronesis. We must keep him safe, and not let him out of our sights.
Cerigg: Besides, look at how hard he's trying to recover his memories. I'm not so heartless as to kick the poor lad aside before he's figured matters out.
Cerigg: But we can't very well rush things. You and I will continue to prepare for the battle ahead, while waiting for the rest of Taynor's memories to come back to him...
Cerigg: Ah, that is to say...if it's all right with you, lad?

Taynor: I...I'm so sorry. I couldn't possibly burden you any further...

Cerigg: Look, lad. I've only known you a short while, but I can tell you've a good heart, and a good head on your shoulders.
Cerigg: I can only begin to imagine the horrors you've been through, not to mention the fears and uncertainty you face even now.
Cerigg: But I want you to promise me this: no more apologies. You're no burden to us, not in the least. You're a valuable member of our band, and as long as you're willing, I want you with us. Isn't that right, [Forename]?

Taynor: I...I see.
Taynor: Thank you, Cerigg. Thank you, [Forename]. I will aid your quest in whatever way I can.

Cerigg: Now that's more like it. We're counting on you, lad.

-cutscene end

-optional start
Taynor: You and Cerigg have shown me no end of kindness. I will do all in my power to recover my memories and return the favor in whatever way I can.

-optional end
==Walkthrough==

==Steps==
*Track down a [[Sandskin Sibilus]] in [[The Fields of Amber]] and procure its [[Sibilus Tendon|tendon]].
*Deliver the Sibilus Tendon to [[Cerigg]].
*Find a lookout point and wait there for Cerigg.
*Speak with Cerigg.

==Journal==
*[[Cerigg]] appears pleased to inform you that [[Phronesis]] has been sighted in the area, allowing the investigation to begin in earnest. He explains his plan, which involves employing a manikin to trail the [[Sin Eater]] and observing from afar, that he might gauge just how wide of a berth must be kept from the hollows to avoid being sucked into the void. But first, the dilapidated manikin must be restored to a functional capacity. You agree to fetch the [[Sibilus Tendon|tendon]] of a [[Sandskin Sibilus]] from [[The Fields of Amber]] while Cerigg procures other essential parts.

*You make short work of the sibilus and slice off a tendon that should serve you well in repairing the manikin. You set off to deliver it to Cerigg, who will undoubtedly be pleased with your success.

*Using the tendon you acquired and other assorted parts procured from his merchant acquaintances, Cerigg succeeds in getting the manikin back on its feet. Fully prepared to begin the investigation, you set off for The Fields of Amber, where the fearsome Phronesis was last sighted.

*Sighting your Sin Eater quarry, Cerigg sends the manikin to trail it, where it is promptly swallowed up into oblivion. The unfortunate automaton's sacrifice having gleaned you useful knowledge, you draw within a safe distance of the hollow to investigate further. Things take a turn for the unexpected when you hear a voice coming from beyond the hollow. At Cerigg's suggestion, you channel your aether into the gaping void to serve as a beacon, and are astonished to see a boy emerge from the other side. Unsure what to make of the situation, you decide to return to [[Mord Souq]] with Cerigg to tend to the frightened, ailing child.

*Though somewhat lacking in experience with small children, Cerigg nevertheless vows to take care of the boy until a more suitable guardian may be found. There are numerous questions he would ask, but for now intends to see that the child is healthy and nourished. You resolve to continue to hone your skills and hope that the child soon wakes, and is able to provide you with the answers you seek.

==Dialogue==
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
===Accepting the quest===

Cerigg: Ah, there you are─and your timing couldn't be better. As luck would have it, a little bird told me that Phronesis was sighted in the vicinity not long ago.
Cerigg: Don't you worry. I have no intention of rushing in like a fool. My plan is to shadow the sin eater from afar, that we might observe the hollows with our own eyes and formulate a suitable plan of attack.
Cerigg: To that end, I procured this manikin here from a merchant acquaintance of mine at the Crystarium. By setting it on Phronesis's trail, I mean to gauge just how wide of a berth we must keep from the fiend so as not to be sucked up into the void.
Cerigg: Shed no tears for the little fellow, friend. His sacrifice will be the key to our success. And yet, as you can see, he's not quite in the best state of repair. Pray lend me a hand in procuring what we need to get him back on his feet.
Cerigg: You're a lifesaver, friend! I just spotted nasty-looking sandskin sibili lurking about to the east of here, and I do believe one of their tendons should serve well to put some spring back in the little fellow's step. Snag one for me, and I'll see to the repairs.

-quest accepted

-optional start
Cerigg: A tendon from one of those sibili prowling about just east of here should be just what our little friend here needs.
-optional end

===Delivering the sibilus tendon to Cerigg===

Cerigg: Any luck finding that tendon? For my part, I've acquired something that should serve as a makeshift gear. Cost me an arm and a leg, but hey─if it helps us claim that bounty in the end, it'll be more than worth it.

''<Hand Over Sibilus Tendon>''

Cerigg: Perfect! Yes, I reckon this is durable and elastic enough to replace the manikin's snapped drive belt. I'll fetch my toolbox and get started straightaway.
Cerigg: In the meantime, why don't you scout us out a suitable lookout point? Phronesis was last sighted just southeast of town. Try to find us a spot on higher ground, out of sight from the main thoroughfare.

-optional start
Cerigg: I'm still working on it, but mark my words: our manikin will be up and walking in no time. See if you can't go find us a good vantage point from which to observe our quarry.
-optional end

===Finding a lookout point and waiting there for Cerigg===

-cutscene start

Cerigg: Ho there, friend! As you can see, our clockwork friend is back in tip-top shape. And since it appears you've found us the perfect lookout spot, why don't we get down to work? I'll kindle us a fire─we might be here for a while.

Cerigg: Well, I'll be! There's the bastard!
Cerigg: Look closely now, and hold your gaze. You must witness the sheer horror with your own two eyes.
Cerigg: No, we mustn't send out the manikin too soon. If Phronesis sees it, he may very well blast it to bits before it has a chance to investigate the hollows.
Cerigg: ...And there he goes. I'll send the manikin in to trail him. Let's sit back and enjoy the show.
Cerigg: Just as I expected...gone without a trace. Shed no tears for our little friend. Through his sacrifice, we now know just how much distance we must keep from the hollows to avoid being sucked into the void.
Cerigg: Now it's our turn. Let's edge a bit closer and see what we can observe. Mind you, take care not to wander ''too'' close─lest you fancy a vacation to a dark, shadowy abyss.
Cerigg: It's as if a shadowy whirlwind rages inside, ready to suck anything and everything into the void. I've seen many a horrific sight in my day, but this sends a shiver up the spine.

Boy's Voice: Let me out... It's so...dark in here...

Cerigg: Hm? Why the pale face, friend? You look as if you've seen a ghost.
Cerigg: A voice, you say? From inside the hollow? But that's impossible!

Boy's Voice: Is anyone...out there? Please, help me...help me get out of here!

Question: What will you say?
> Over here!
> Are you...alive?
---

Boy's Voice: Was that a voice? Is someone out there!? If you can hear me, please...you must help me!
Boy's Voice: I can't see anything... No road, no trees... Not even an aether current to follow... Which way do I go? How do I get out of this place!?

Cerigg: This voice...what in the gods' name is it saying!?
Cerigg: The voice of a boy, you say? Claims he's lost inside, with no aether current to follow? Sounds like he's adrift in the flow, not unlike what would happen if an aetheryte to which one was teleporting was destroyed in mid-journey.
Cerigg: ...Wait a minute. What if there were some way you could channel your aether into the void? Might that not allow your aetheric form to serve as a beacon of sorts to guide the child back to us? 'Course, not that I know how we'd go about that...
Cerigg: Hm? You reckon you could do just that? I won't even think of asking how. Do your damndest!
Cerigg: Wicked white! I knew you were no ordinary sinner, but even still you find ways to surprise me.

Emaciated Child: Where...where am I?

Cerigg: Well, I'll be damned... There ''was'' a child inside!
Cerigg: Our little expedition has left us with more questions than answers, eh? But for now, this boy needs our care. Let us carry him back to Mord Souq and find him a warm bed and some nourishment.

-cutscene end

===Speaking with Cerigg===

Cerigg: The boy's resting now. He is weak, but not wounded...'least as far as I can tell.
Cerigg: Needless to say, his presence raises questions. Are there others trapped on the other side of the hollows? If so, might they also be returned to our world alive?
Cerigg: There is much we must ask him when he awakes. On another subject, ah...this might be an odd question, but have you ever looked after a child before?

Question: What will you say?
> What do you think?
Cerigg: Heh...that makes two of us. Bounty hunters like me don't get much opportunity for babysitting. Still, until we can track down the boy's parents, I suppose I have little choice but to look after him myself.

> As a matter of fact...
Cerigg: You don't say? In that case, he's all yours! Heh...I'm jestin', friend. I can't very well tie you down here forever. Worry not, I'll manage somehow.

---

Cerigg: I suppose the first order of the day should be to get some food in his belly. He does look terribly pale, after all. Methinks I'll go hunting for some meat...
Cerigg: No...perhaps I should take him to a physician first? After all, he may be suffering from some ailment inscrutable to the eye. Or maybe I should─ Damn it all! I knew I wasn't cut out for this...

==Journal==
*Cerigg is eyeing you inquisitively.

*You strike up a conversation with the bounty hunter Cerigg, who reveals to you his plan to hunt down a sin eater by the name of Phronesis─one of the four so-called “Cardinal Virtues” born from the remains of the fallen Warriors of Light. He is searching for a companion to aid him─and, in turn, share in the bounty─and suggests that you might be up for the task. Meet him at the Red Serai in Amh Araeng if you have a mind to take up the offer.

*Upon arriving in Amh Araeng, Cerigg informs you that yet another sin eater has manifested itself nearby, and asks you to hunt it down as proof of your ability to hold your own against the fearsome Phronesis. Venture to the western reaches of the region and attend to business.

*Wielding your formidable magicks, you make short work of the sin eater. You set off to report to Cerigg, who will no doubt be pleased to hear of your efforts.

*Cerigg is duly impressed with your abilities, and officially extends to you an offer to join him in hunting down the formidable Phronesis. He invites you to come to Mord Souq, where he promises to brief you further on the nature of the threat the sin eater poses.

*Cerigg shares with you the specifics of the sin eater Phronesis and its preferred method of attack. As he tells it, the sin eater does not confront its foes directly, but rather wreaks havoc via something people call “the hollows”─compact dimensional portals conjured out of thin air that swallow up everything around them. With your arcane knowledge, he hopes to devise a means to counteract this phenomenon, thus opening up a line of attack to the sin eater itself. Exercising due caution, he promises to do the necessary research before attempting to approach the fiend itself. You resolve to continue to hone your command of the magical arts until such time as Cerigg is ready to proceed to the next phase of his plan.

Question: What will you say?
> You have the right of it.

> Phron-what's-is?
Cerigg: If I didn't know better, I could've sworn you just suggested that you're unfamiliar with Phronesis. But that couldn't be─no sinner worth her salt could be so ignorant.
Cerigg: Allow me to elaborate. Phronesis isn't just your run-of-the-mill stray sin eater. He's one of the nastiest the realm has seen, formed from the remains of one of those godsdamned Warriors of Light.
Cerigg: There are four of them, all told. Crawled up from the bowels of the deepest hell after being buried for nigh on a century, if the tales are true. People have come to call them the “Cardinal Virtues.”
Cerigg: Before he was transformed into a sin eater, Phronesis was none other than archmagus Nyelbert, whose baleful magicks were feared the realm over.
Cerigg: Though it's only been a few short years since he first showed up in Amh Araeng, he's already preyed on far too many innocents with his foul sorcery. Not keen on seeing their trade routes disrupted, the local merchants have placed a healthy bounty on his head.
Cerigg: 'Course, I'd like nothing more than to fell the fiend single-handed and claim the entire bounty for myself. Unfortunately, circumstances have dictated that I recruit a companion─that's where you come in.
Cerigg: Provided that you can prove to me that you possess the rather, ah, ''specialized'' set of skills that I require, I promise I'll make it worth your while.
Cerigg: Not a bad offer, wouldn't you say? If you fancy yourself up to the task, come find me in Amh Araeng. I mean to set off for there shortly.
===Speaking with Cerigg at the Red Serai===

Cerigg: So you came. It's good to see someone who isn't all talk.
Cerigg: As fortune would have it, another sin eater─a far less imposing specimen than Phronesis, of course─has been sighted just to the west of here. Prove to me you have the skill to back up your words, and we'll talk further.

-optional start
Cerigg: The sin eater isn't far from here─I can feel it. Track it down, and let's see what you're capable of.
-optional end

===Reporting back to Cerigg===

Cerigg: Good show, friend. I wasn't sure what to expect from you, but seeing you in battle has left me with little doubt. Seems I've found myself a formidable ally.
Cerigg: And so I'll extend the offer in earnest: help me hunt down Phronesis, and we'll split the bounty down the middle. Well, what do you say?
Cerigg: That's the spirit! Now, there's more you should know before we proceed. Come with me to Mord Souq, my base of operations, and I'll fill you in on the details.

===Speaking with Cerigg===

-cutscene start

Cerigg: Welcome to Mord Souq, friend. As you can see, it's a bustling trading post frequented by merchants from across the realm. 'Least it ''was'' before Phronesis showed up and started preying on unwitting travelers. Hence the bounty, you see.
Cerigg: The lucrative reward has attracted the attention of one capable bounty hunter after the next, yet the fiend still roams free. You can probably imagine why.
Cerigg: Those few who have seen Phronesis and returned to tell the tale speak of the great horrors they witnessed. Cavernous black holes materializing out of thin air, swallowing everything around them into the abyss...
Cerigg: People have taken to calling them “the hollows.” Rumor has it that one barely has time to lay eyes on Phronesis before he summons forth the hollows, which proceed to consume everything in sight.
Cerigg: And I do mean ''everything''. Just the other day, an entire caravan was devoured by the hollows, leaving only nothingness behind.
Cerigg: Mages have postulated that these holes are literally tears in the fabric of our reality─gateways to other worlds, to put it another way. At any rate, suffice to say that the next man to come back from the void will be the first.
Cerigg: And yet there's something odd about it all. Witnesses say that Phronesis doesn't seem to go out of his way to prey on people or settlements. He simply shambles across the wastes, summoning hollows one after the next, and the destruction follows as a matter of course.
Cerigg: Needless to say, drawing too near to the fiend is tantamount to suicide. Even attacks from afar have been all but futile, as Phronesis simply summons the hollows to consume every incoming arrow.
Cerigg: With every conceivable means of attack foiled, even the most savvy bounty hunters have all but thrown up their hands─even though the bounty now stands at some nine- or tenfold the original amount.
Cerigg: I'm of a different mind, however. The way I see it, if only there were a way to neutralize the hollows, we'd more than stand a chance against Phronesis himself. This is why I require your services.
Cerigg: Your easy triumph over the sin eater spoke clear: you're a mage of no common skill. If anyone has the arcane knowledge and aptitude to help me figure out a way to defend against the hollows, it's you.
Cerigg: Don't worry─I fully intend to shoulder my share of the burden. And so I plan to gather all the information we need before asking you to put yourself in harm's way.
Cerigg: And with that, I'd best get to work. Once I've formulated a proper plan of attack, we'll talk again. Until then, I suggest you continue to hone your casting skills. The battle that awaits us will not be an easy one.

==Journal==
*Olvara cannot help but worry for Lue-Reeq's well-being.

*In the days since your somewhat acrimonious parting, Lue-Reeq has come to visit Miss Olvara some few times. Though he seems to be in good health, he has yet to forge a new partnership with another Virtue-hunter, and so the elderly woman hopes that you can put aside whatever negative feelings you may harbor against the youth, and go to the Crystarium to see how he is faring.

*Lue-Reeq is not at his usual table, nor does he appear to be anywhere in the general vicinity. Surely someone nearby will have noted his passing, though...

*In questioning the patrons of the Wandering Stairs you learn that Lue-Reeq's former partner, Lanbyrd, took his entourage to Rak'tika in order to slay Andreia. They were overmatched, however, and nearly slaughtered to a man, leaving a sole survivor of the battle to recount the tale to others at the Crystarium. Others then left to take up the hunt in their fallen comrades' stead, Lue-Reeq among them. Most likely he is still in the Greatwood─assuming he is still alive...

*Blessedly, you find the young lordling alive and well, and through the power of the Echo observe how he confronted Andreia, only to his horror discover that Lanbyrd and his fallen comrades had risen once more as eaters in service to the Virtue. Though Lue-Reeq is at first unsure how to reconcile this behavior with his knowledge of Renda-Rae's past, you explain that in truth she did not defeat Balam–Quitz alone, but rather with the aid of her fellow Warriors of Light. Finally recognizing his folly, the young lordling at last begs your forgiveness for his harsh words, and asks that you return with him to Gatetown to speak with Miss Olvara before you prepare for your final confrontation with Andreia.

*A rather apologetic Lue-Reeq thanks both you and his former wet nurse for your constant support in spite of his myriad failings. Though he is far from certain how he might overcome his limitations and lay the spirit of Renda-Rae to rest, even with your assistance, he is willing to do whatever it takes to see his hunt through to the end.

==Dialogue==
===Accepting the quest===
'''Olvara:''' I am sure a talented {{alternatives|f=woman|m=man}} like yourself is needed all over the realm, and so I thank you for sparing a moment to hear me out.
'''Olvara:''' Since you two parted ways, Reeq has come to visit me several times. Though he is blessedly in good health, I worry for his spirits. I think you may have been the only friend he has had for some time...
'''Olvara:''' I considered journeying to the Crystarium myself to look in on him, but I find travel rather difficult these days. If you would go in my stead, it would put my heart at ease...

'''(Optional)'''
'''Olvara:''' All I ask is that you go to the Crystarium and see Reeq. I won't ask you to take pity on or forgive him. I only want to make sure that he is well...

===Searching for Lue-Reeq in the Crystarium===
'''System:''' Lue-Reeq's customary seat is empty, and there is nothing to suggest he has occupied it recently. Perhaps someone will have noted his passing...

===Questioning the people at the Wandering Stairs===
'''Darlfort:''' Lue-Reeq? The Mystel lordling? If he ain't sat at his usual table, then I've no idea where else to look.
'''(Optional)'''
'''Darlfort:''' If he never comes back, good riddance, says I. Still, I'm sure he'll come crawling back here eventually, tail between his legs like the whelp he is.

'''Mei-Tatch:''' Looking for “Master Reeq,” are we? Heh, I daresay you're the only one.
'''Mei-Tatch:''' Word is mummy and daddy cut him off, so there's no point in pretending to like the little shite anymore. Last I saw him he was moping about like someone had shot his amaro. I'm sure he'll turn up eventually.
'''(Optional)'''
'''Mei-Tatch:''' I told you, if the little lordling isn't at his table, then I've no idea where he is. Ask someone else.

'''Well-traveled Mage:''' Kholusia, right? You're Lue-Reeq's partner. I was with Lanbyrd, remember?
'''Well-traveled Mage:''' Was, I oughta stress, 'cause after we left you we headed straight to Rak'tika. We'd heard a rumor Andreia was there, and Lanbyrd wanted to strike while the iron was hot...
'''Well-traveled Mage:''' By the time we realized we were overmatched, it was too late. I saw Lanbyrd fall, and when the eater set her sights on the others, I fled.
'''Well-traveled Mage:''' Call me a coward if you like, but my cowardice saved my life! Wicked white, I still remember looking back as I ran, and seeing Lanbyrd rise to his feet...
'''Well-traveled Mage:''' I told everyone what had happened, to warn them off the hunt. Some listened, but a few bloody fools took up their weapons and joined the hunt. Glory hungry imbeciles. And not a one of them has returned.
'''Well-traveled Mage:''' Didn't expect Lue-Reeq to be one of them neither. I remember thinking it odd─especially when I saw him leave for Rak'tika alone. You're meeting him there, I presume? Good luck, friend...but have no doubt that you're going to your doom.
'''(Optional)'''
'''Well-traveled Mage:''' If I were you, I'd leave Lue-Reeq to hunt the Virtue on his own. No shame in recognizing when you've got no chance. Only a fool would fight this fight.

===Searching for Lue-Reeq in Rak'tika (Cutscene)===
'''Lue-Reeq:''' ...[Forename]? Why are you here? Don't tell me you came for me?
'''Lue-Reeq:''' It's terrible! It's horrible! Andreia, she's...she's...

===Echo===
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Renda-Rae! If aught of you remains, then hearken to my words!
'''Lue-Reeq:''' I have come to lay your soul to rest─alone, as you yourself faced Balam-Quitz a century ago on this very ground!
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Lanbyrd? Oh gods, no...
===Echo End===

'''Lue-Reeq:''' Don't tell me─you beheld a vision of my past just now, didn't you?
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Aye, I thought as much. Wasn't but a moment ago that I confronted them. Awfully useful, that trick of yours, though I can't understand why you kept using it every time we ran into Andreia...

'''< What will you say?>'''
'''< I can't control when it happens. >'''
'''< Believe me, I was just as surprised as you were... >'''

'''(Both)'''
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Huh? So it wasn't something you did deliberately? Good to know...
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Anyway, unintentional or not, at least I won't have to convince you of what I saw. She's turned Lanbyrd and those other hunters into sin eaters like herself.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' A Hume axeman, a Galdjent swordsman, a dwarven healer, an elven mage. Looked awfully familiar, didn't it?
'''Lue-Reeq:''' She's rebuilding her fellowship─she's remaking the Warriors of Light!
'''Lue-Reeq:''' But for the life of me, I can't understand why. I mean, I understand why she came here in the first place. She's reliving the hunt for Balam-Quitz.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' But Renda-Rae slew the beast by herself! The stories were clear about that!
'''Lue-Reeq:''' What? They were there too!? Then the stories were ''wrong''?
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Gods strike me down, I've been such a fool! Why did I ever think I could do this alone...
'''Lue-Reeq:''' I...I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me for all the things I said, [Forename]...
'''Lue-Reeq:''' I've regretted my behavior ever since the day we parted ways. It was stupid and nonsensical and utterly pointless.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' I'm not sure I could even tell you why I did what I did...

'''< What will you say?>'''
'''< It's fine. Water under the bridge. >'''
'''< ... >'''

'''''< It's fine. Water under the bridge. >'''''
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Thank you, my friend. I hope it is all right if I call you that...

'''''< ... >'''''
'''Lue-Reeq:''' You're still upset, as you have every right to be. But I will make it up to you, I will! I don't know how or when, but I will! I swear!

'''(Both)'''
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Right, then. Andreia should be around here somewhere. Still on the hunt for Balam-Quitz, I expect...not that she'll ever find it.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' No doubt Lanbyrd and the others are with her, too. He and I may have had our differences, but I'd not wish that fate on my worst enemy.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' He deserves to be laid to rest. They all do. Renda-Rae most of all. She was...she is my hero, and if I have to kill her to save her soul, then so be it!
'''Lue-Reeq:''' But this is too much for even the best hunter to handle alone─and I am far from the best. The only way to see this through is together. You and me, my friend. What say you?
'''Lue-Reeq:''' Hah! I ask for a word and you give me a nod. Fair enough. Before we resume the hunt in earnest, though, let us return to Gatetown and let Miss Olvara know all is well. After all, you wouldn't have come unless she sent you...

'''(Optional)'''
'''Lue-Reeq:''' I owe her so much. Then and now...

===Speaking with Olvara in Kholusia===
'''Olvara:''' [Forename], what a pleasure to see you again! And in the company of little Reeq, no less. Am I right in assuming you've patched things up?

'''Lue-Reeq:''' I should like to think so, yes...and it is all thanks to you. Had you not implored her to give me another chance, I might well still be sitting alone in the swamps, dwelling on my myriad failings.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' And you, my friend─I know not why you sought her out on your own, but I am glad that you did. Miss Olvara is perhaps the only person who truly cares for my well-being, but she has no one to look after her─

'''Olvara:''' Don't be silly, Reeq. I have you, don't I! And before you start blabbering about how you wish you could properly reward [Forename]─as I can tell you're about to─know that I've prepared a hearty meal just for {{alternatives|f=her|m=him}}!

'''Lue-Reeq:''' Oh, that's...very thoughtful of you. Nevertheless, I shall see you both duly compensated once we have claimed the bounty for Andreia.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' And claim it we shall, for united, Reeq and [Forename] are unstoppable...is what I would like to say, but I know my own limitations better than anyone. 'Twould be prudent to make proper preparations at this juncture.
'''Lue-Reeq:''' You too should see to it that you are ready for the struggle ahead. It will be a mighty one indeed, but one well worth the effort, my friend!
==Dialogue==
===Accepting the quest===
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' Oh, I-I'm not here to cause trouble! I've simply come to pay a visit to one of Amity's residents.
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' A former maidservant, in fact, to whom I owe a belated apology. But now that I've finally found her, I find myself beset with unease...
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' Before I approach, I need to know her state of mind─how does she feel now about Eulmore? About me? I would appreciate any insight that might better prepare me for what I must do...
'''(Optional)'''
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' Pray find my former maidservant, and ask for her thoughts on Eulmore. She's a young and pretty Hume girl, with hair the color of the palest rose...

===Speaking with the fearful fugitive===
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' Hello again, {{alternatives|f=miss|m=sir}}. Was there something...?
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' You...want to know how I feel about Eulmore and my former masters? I thought I made that quite clear the last time we met: the very mention of that place leaves me shaking in terror.
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' It is a terrible city filled with terrible people, who care for naught but indulging their basest instincts...
'''(Optional)'''
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' Eulmore was a nightmare from which I've escaped in body only. I long for the day my mind is released from this fear...

===Reporting to the well-dressed noblewoman===
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' And? What did she have to say of Eulmore...?
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' ...Trembles at the very mention of it? Well, I suppose that is to be expected.
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' 'Tis all true. We lived in decadent abandon, seeking only to fulfill our whims and appetites. And when ''she'' became the object of my husband's desires, a jealous rage consumed me. All I could think of was making her suffer...
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' With Lord Vauthry gone, 'tis almost as if a fog has lifted from my mind. How clearly I see now the awful person I had become.
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' My husband, too, regrets his behavior. He has made his apologies...and it is time for me to make mine.
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' ...Yet it seems a sudden confrontation may be ill-advised.
'''Well-dressed Noblewoman:''' Anticipating such, I have penned a brief letter to explain my intentions. Pray deliver this to the girl─I shall be waiting at Top Rung.

===Delivering the letter of contrition to the fearful fugitive===
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' A letter? For me?
'''''<Hand Over Letter of Contrition>'''''
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' ...Good gracious, this is from my old mistress!

'''Letter of Contrition:''' ''My dear girl, you served my husband and me with unrelenting diligence. And we repaid your efforts with vulgarity and violence, wounding you in heart and body alike.''
'''Letter of Contrition:''' ''I am deserving of your hatred. Of your fear. Words of apology can do little to salve the suffering I've caused, yet I would speak them nonetheless. I await your pleasure at Top Rung...''

'''Fearful Fugitive:''' ......
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' Am I to believe she has changed so dramatically...?

'''< What will you say? >'''
'''< She seemed sincere... >'''
'''< Vauthry's society brought out the worst in people... >'''

'''(Both)'''
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' Hm. I'm not entirely convinced...but I will at least hear what she has to say.
'''Fearful Fugitive:''' Oh, and this is for you─her ladyship included a token of thanks for her “mediator.” I suppose I should be on my way...
*The Crystal Exarch is eager for you to meet with Alphinaud.

*In order to facilitate your reunion with [[Alphinaud]], the Exarch offers to arrange transportation for the journey to Kholusia. He hands you a folded letter, and asks that you present it to Szem Djenmai, the Master of Beasts at Temenos Rookery.

*After perusing your letter of introduction, Szem Djenmai not only agrees to provide you with an amaro, but also insists upon accompanying you on the first leg of your trip. He bids you gather your gear and head to the Amaro Launch, where one of the younger tamers will attend to you while Szem is saddling the mounts.

*Despite obvious doubts as to your skill as a rider, the young tamer nevertheless trusts in Master Djenmai's decision to grant you the use of his amaro. Your journey to Kholusia has begun.

*After a blissfully uneventful flight, you alight upon the island. Szem waits patiently nearby as you find your land legs.

*According to your guide, it is not the wildlife of Kholusia that should concern you, but its people. Once satisfied that you have heeded his warning regarding the Eulmorans, the Zun promises to tell you something that will aid you in your search for Alphinaud...
===Accepting the quest===
'''Crystal Exarch:''' You will visit Alphinaud in Kholusia, then? Excellent.
'''Crystal Exarch:''' As I mentioned, your destination is an island off the west coast, so you will need a mount capable of making the journey.
'''Crystal Exarch:''' Your first order of business will be to reunite with Alphinaud and Alisaie. In so doing, the predicament here in Norvrandt should become abundantly clear.
'''Crystal Exarch:''' As for communications with the Source, Feo Ul will gladly serve as your messenger. If needs be, however, you yourself should be capable of making the journey between worlds.
'''Crystal Exarch:''' The device there will serve as a portal─simply touching a hand to its surface will transport you to the location of the beacon I left at the base of the tower. In theory, at least...
-optional end

===Presenting the letter of introduction to Szem Djenmai at Temenos Rookery===
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Your face is unknown to me. What business have you at my rookery?
''The player hands over the {{item icon|Letter of Introduction (In Search of Alphinaud)}}.''
'''Szem Djenmai:''' ...Hmph. Signed by the Exarch, no less.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Yes, I can provide you with an amaro for passage to Kholusia. I will pick you out a friendly whelp.

Question: What will you say?

> Amaro are often used for travel, then?
'''Szem Djenmai:''' That's right. Mounts like my grey friend over there are a common sight in these parts.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' But I gather you hail from further afield. More accustomed to chocobos, perchance? I hear there are a few places where they ride little else.

> And there I was expecting a chocobo...
'''Szem Djenmai:''' A chocobo? Do you hail from one of Norvrandt's more isolated settlements, perchance? I hear there are a few places where they ride little else.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' But here in the Crystarium, mounts like that grey fellow there are far more commonly used.
---

'''Szem Djenmai:''' ...Hm. Seeing as you are plainly unaccustomed to riding amaro, I think it best I accompany you on this flight myself.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Any Zun worthy of the name could do it, of course, but the Exarch sent you to me. Ensuring you arrive safely is my responsibility.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Gather your things and meet me at the Amaro Launch. One of the junior tamers will attend to you while I ready the mounts.
-optional start
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Wait for me at the Amaro Launch. Just mention my name to the tamer on duty, and he will see you are taken care of
-optional end
===Speaking with the aspiring amaro tamer===
'''Aspiring Amaro Tamer:''' You want to fly an amaro to ''Kholusia?'' Well, I suppose if Master Djenmai is going with you...
'''Aspiring Amaro Tamer:''' Wait here, please. The master should be along with the mounts shortly.

-voiced cutscene start
'''Ardbert@Ardbert (Narration):''' The whistling breeze, mute. The pounding surf, frozen. Time itself takes a breath...
'''Ardbert@Ardbert (Narration):''' At light's edge, all is perfectly still. The world captured in a painting, locked in a moment.
'''Ardbert@Ardbert (Narration):''' And in the distance, beyond the broken earth, a city beckons...
-cutscene end

===Speaking with Szem Djenmai===
-cutscene start
'''Szem Djenmai:''' We are arrived. This is Cracked Shell Beach, on the eastern coast of Kholusia. You should be safe here for the present.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Compared to the mainland, sin eater attacks are far less prevalent. And the native beasts are not any more dangerous than elsewhere.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' It is the ''people'' you should be wary of...
'''Szem Djenmai:''' Spy you that city in the distance? That is Eulmore, the island's main settlement.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' It rivals the Crystarium in scale, and was once an ally in our battle against the abominations.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' For years, the Eulmoran elite have fancied themselves the masters of what remains of our broken world. They have gone as far as to offer the leaders of other settlements their protection─if we bend the knee.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' But to say their ideals are questionable would be putting it mildly. The Crystarium is one among many who resist their heavy-handed authority, and while we are not at war, our relationship with Eulmore is strained at best.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' It may be wise to conceal your ties with the Exarch during your stay here, especially in the vicinity of the city.
'''Szem Djenmai:''' I am glad we understand each other.<br>Now, the Exarch has instructed me to divulge a secret that should make finding your friend a good deal easier. Listen closely...

Question: What will you say?
> Alisaie...
> I've spoken with the carers.
---

'''Alisaie:''' ...Thank you. What you're doing, it...it means a lot to them. To me.

'''Willfort:''' ...Sorry to interrupt. We, uh... We realized we hadn't thanked you for rescuing Halric.
'''Willfort:''' ...You weren't hurt at all, were you?

'''Alisaie:''' Hurt...? There wasn't even a fight. I was too late. Too ''slow.''<br>And I thought I could protect you...

'''Cassana:''' You can't blame yourself for things beyond your control. You brought Halric back safe and sound─no one could have done any more.

'''Alisaie:''' I'm sorry, but I've come to a decision: I won't be continuing in my role here.
'''Alisaie:''' I hope you will forgive me for leaving you...and that you will delay Halric's last meal for as long as you possibly can.
'''Alisaie:''' Not until it's too late, of course, just...give him what time you can.

'''Willfort:''' We always do.

'''Alisaie:''' Of course. She would have done the same.
'''Alisaie:''' Farewell, Halric. Keep Tesleen's words close to your heart.

'''Cassana:''' Wait! You're leaving this very moment? I understand how you must feel, but surely this is a bit hasty? Do you even have anywhere to go?

'''Alisaie:''' I have a destination in mind, yes. And a purpose.
'''Alisaie:''' This damned Light, building without cease... It's the reason we can't save those corrupted by the eaters.
'''Alisaie:''' But what if we corrected the balance? Even if it were only little by little─even if it took ''years''─it would surely make things better.

'''Willfort:''' Now, hold on there. Everyone knows there's too much Light, but how could you ever hope to get rid of it? You'd have to change the whole world!

'''Alisaie:''' That's right...
'''Alisaie:''' We should return to the Crystarium. I may not be able to repel the eaters on my own...but I can still use the skills I have gained here to hurt them.
'''Cassana:''' It's all very well talking about curing the eater affliction...but false hope can be a dangerous thing.

'''Wrenric:''' I've got to stay sharp, keep my wits about me. I miss Tesleen as much as anyone, but I can't let my thoughts stray from the task at hand.

'''Halric:''' ......

'''Todden:''' Ahhh...

'''Pawnil:''' Ahhh... Tes... Tesleen...

'''Willfort:''' Poor Alisaie... She was so close to Tesleen... I only hope she doesn't do something foolish.

'''Lamon:''' Tesleen may be gone, but her share of the work still needs to be done. I'm sure she wouldn't want us to let standards slip.

'''Voyne:''' I'm fine... I can still─ I'm fine...

'''Cassard:''' [Forename]! Good to see you again! You look like you've a story or two to tell... But I sense you'd sooner get back to the Crystarium.
===Speaking with Alisaie at the Red Serai===
'''Alisaie:''' Forgive me, [Forename]─I couldn't stay there a moment longer.
'''Alisaie:''' But I was serious about what I said. While the men and women at the Inn battle against this blight with kindness, I must fight it in my own way. With steel.

> If the player had completed the Coils of Bahamut
Question: What will you say?
>> From Eorzea's sword in the darkness...to Novrandt's sword in the light?
'''Alisaie:''' Gods above. It feels like an age ago now...
>> ...
---
---

'''Cassard:''' Miss Alisaie!? ...Is there anything I can get you?

'''Alisaie:''' Your swiftest amaro! I need to return to the Crystarium─immediately!

'''Cassard:''' A-As you wish!

-optional start
'''Cassard:''' Ah, it's good to be back. Mord Souq has many charms, but there's nothing like a proper bed to recover from a long journey...as I'm sure you'd agree.
-optional end

===Speaking with Alisaie===
'''Alisaie:''' Ugh, remind me to wear goggles if we ever fly over Amh Araeng again. I've barely gotten the sand out of my eyes.
'''Alisaie:''' ...But the wind did help to clear my head at least.
'''Alisaie:''' I think I'm ready to meet with the Exarch. We need to talk about how we're going to wipe the sin eaters out. Shall we?

-optional start
'''Crystal Exarch:''' I see you were reunited with Alisaie, but I daresay you found little else to celebrate in Amh Araeng...

> If the In Search of Alphinaud questline has been completed
'''Alphinaud:''' Welcome back, [Forename]. You will have to share the tale of your journey once the two of you are suitably rested.
---
-optional end

===Speaking with Alisaie in the Ocular===
> If the In Search of Alphinaud questline has not been completed
'''Alisaie:''' Thank you for seeking me out, [Forename]─it meant a lot to have you there at my side.<br>...I was tempted to set off again the moment we had decided upon a direction, but you have still to visit Alphinaud, haven't you?
'''Alisaie:''' And if I know my brother, he'll be on the cusp of discovering something vital to our success─if he hasn't already. I'm content to stay here and consider our options for the time being─but don't keep me waiting too long, eh?

> If the In Search of Alphinaud questline has already been completed
'''Alisaie:''' Thank you for seeking me out, [Forename]─it meant a lot to have you there at my side. And looking at Alphinaud, I'd say he's as eager to begin this discussion as I am.
'''Alisaie:''' I say we lay our experiences before the Exarch, and step back to see what kind of picture they make. Then we can decide where to go from here.

==Journal==
*After giving [[Alisaie]] into the care of the infirmary's chirurgeons and enjoying a spirited bout with [[Lyse]] in the palm of the Destroyer, the time has come for you and your comrades to return to the fight. Lyse asks that you and [[Alphinaud]] go on ahead, as she has various matters to discuss with her officers before she departs.

*Alphinaud bids farewell to his sister, urging her not to rise from her bed until she is given express leave to do so. Then you set out together for [[Castrum Abania]], where [[General Aldynn]] and [[Marshal Tarupin]] await.

*The vice marshal informs you that Castrum Abania is now wholly under the control of the [[Eorzean Alliance]]. The imperials' supplies have been plundered and are being distributed as needed. Moreover, your allies have confirmed that a unit of Skulls passed through, escorting a single prisoner to the capital -- [[Krile]], almost certainly. With luck, it will not be long before you locate and rescue your captive comrade.

*At [[Porta Praetoria]], with the leaders of the Alliance and the [[Ala Mhigan Resistance|Resistance]] in attendance, you discuss your plans for laying siege to [[Ala Mhigo]] and defeating the XIIth Legion once and for all. Time being of the essence, it is decided that as soon as the Resistance has secured the residential district to the south of the city, the main host will immediately launch an all-out assault. The [[Scions]], meanwhile, will be held in reserve, ready to render aid where needed, and attend to Krile's rescue upon learning where she is being held.

*Rhalgr's beacon nears its end, and soon, Twelve willing, Ala Mhigo will be free. As the hour of judgment draws nigh, Alphinaud spares a moment to consider what his grandfather would have said were he with you today...

==Dialogue==
===Accepting the Quest===
'''Lyse:''' Now that Alisaie's settled in, it's time we rejoined the fight.
'''Lyse:''' Though, actually...maybe you and Alphinaud should go on ahead without me. I need to talk strategy with the officers, and that might take a while...
'''(Optional)'''
'''Lyse:''' This is the first time I've visited Rhalgr's Reach since taking over from Conrad, so we have a few things to discuss. Don't worry—I won't be far behind.

===Speaking with Alphinaud===
'''Alphinaud:''' Ah, there you are. What was it that Lyse wanted of you? Ahahaha!
'''Alphinaud:''' Ahahaha! A sparring match on the Destroyer's very palm? I would have liked to see that.
'''Alphinaud:''' But she is right—we have lingered here long enough. I am ready to depart when you are.

'''Alisaie:''' Take care, you two. Don't do anything I wouldn't.

'''Alphinaud:''' And you had better not rise from that bed until you are given express permission to do so. Urianger will be paying you a visit soon, and he is already worried enough as it is.
'''Alphinaud:''' We have a long road ahead of us. Lead the way, [Forename].

===Speaking with Pipin at Castrum Abania (Cutscene)===
'''Pipin:''' You are returned! How fares your sister, Alphinaud?

'''Alphinaud:''' Her rapier wit remains undulled—for better or for worse. Have there been any developments in our absence?

'''Pipin:''' I am proud to say that Castrum Abania is now wholly under our control. At present, we are taking stock of the enemy's supplies and redistributing them amongst our men.
'''Pipin:''' Also, while sifting through the officer's documents, we learned that a unit of Skulls under Fordola's command passed through the castrum en route to the capital...with a single prisoner in custody.

'''Alphinaud:''' Krile! It has to be her!

'''Pipin:''' In all likelihood, yes. You will be glad to hear that the tunnel leading to the Lochs has been secured by our soldiers and is now safe to travel.
'''Pipin:''' And one final piece of good news: reinforcements from all four Alliance nations have arrived and joined the main host, which has established a new base of operations within the Lochs.
'''Pipin:''' Commander Hext should be arriving soon, yes? When she does, we will call a meeting to discuss the final stage of Rhalgr's Beacon.

'''Lyse:''' Sorry for keeping you all waiting!

'''Alphinaud:''' An Ala Mhigan folk dress? How very fitting. And well-fitting, I might add.

'''Lyse:''' I wanted to do something for Yda. And myself.

'''Alphinaud:''' This is it. The last push. We're coming, Krile...

===Journeying to the Lochs (Voiceover)===
'''Lyse:''' I remember my father's words.
How they rang in my ears as we left Castrum Abania behind and looked out over the Lochs before us.
'''Lyse:''' Comrades brave and true. They had come from all across Eorzea to stand with us.
To stand against oppression and tyranny.
'''Lyse:''' Twenty years the Empire had ruled us, but no longer.
Liberty or death. Liberty or death.

====Cutscene====
'''Raubahn:''' Ere we begin, I would say to you, as a proud son of Ala Mhigo, that I am grateful to each and every one of you for your part in this endeavor.
'''Raubahn:''' Now, to the heart of the matter. The enemy appears content to remain within the city walls and await the inevitable siege. Open conflict has been sporadic thus far.
'''Raubahn:''' Whether Zenos is biding his time until reinforcements arrive or attempting to bait us into a trap, none can say. We know better than to trust his word.

'''Pipin:''' Regardless, we can ill afford to present Garlemald with a chance to ready her legions. It would be in our best interests to press for a swift resolution.

'''Lyse:''' A long siege wouldn't be good for the people in the city either.
If food becomes scarce, you know who'll starve first.

'''Raubahn:''' Just so. Therefore, I propose we commit our forces to an all-out assault.
What say you?
'''Raubahn:''' 'Twould seem we are of one mind. The let us proceed to the how of it.
'''Raubahn:''' The Immortal Flames will form the vanguard, supported by the archers and the conjurers of the Order of the Twin Adder, under the Elder Seedseer's command.
'''Raubahn:''' Once the main host has cleared a path to the walls, we will bring forward the artillery of the Maelstrom and the Temple Knights.
'''Raubahn:''' I would have your cannons pound the gates, and punch a hole right through the middle of their defenses!

'''Lyse:''' What about the Resistance?

'''Raubahn:''' Your part will be to occupy the residential district and keep civilians out of harm's way. The people are more like to trust their own.

'''Lyse:''' Of course. You can count on us!

'''Raubahn:''' Remember that there is a second entrance to the city proper there. If all goes to plan, we will have secured two points of entry.
'''Raubahn:''' Once both objectives are complete, we press on into the city, surround the palace, and hunt down Zenos.
'''Raubahn:''' As for the Scions, you will be held in reserve as an irregular unit until we have more intelligence on your captured comrade. Krile's rescue will be your primary concern, but I daresay we'll find a use for you once her freedom has been secured.

'''Alphinaud:''' Thank you, General. I pray we find her quickly.

'''Raubahn:''' Rhalgr's Beacon nears its end.
Soon, my friends, Ala Mhigo will be ours once more!

====Optional====
'''Dantounel:''' This place is a bit too dusty for my taste. I find myself missing the forest...

'''V'mah Tia:''' The end is in sight. It has been a long time coming...

'''J'moldva:''' "A storm of blood approaches fast... Hells open, Heavens weep..."

'''Arenvald:''' The battle for Castrum Abania was brutal, but the one for Ala Mhigo will be unlike any we have ever known...

'''Storm Officer:''' Those imperial bastards don't stand a chance! We'll blast them to smithereens with our cannons!

'''Serpent Officer:''' The Flames belong on the front line, whereas we are better suited to a supporting role. Owing to their lengthy campaign against the Dravanians, the Temple Knights are a well–rounded force, and the Lominsans, well...woe betide the enemy who has to contend with a pirate and his axe.

'''Pipin:''' Father has dreamed of this day for nearly half his life. Just one more step.

'''Raubahn:''' I swore I'd return with an army one day, and here we are. We're almost home.

'''Lucia:''' Although I have briefed our officers on Garlean tactics and magitek design, I cannot say with confidence it will be of much use. Zenos has employed unorthodox strategies before, and I know little of these new prototypes...

'''Aymeric:''' Hilda and her watch will keep Ishgard safe in my absence. You know I would not miss this for the world, my friend.

'''Pamisolaux:''' I have traveled here from distant Coerthas to support the efforts of the Alliance. Pray call upon me should you have need of a chiurgeon's skills.

'''Dorothe:''' I'd only ever heard tell of Ala Mhigo in the reports—it is a far grander city than I expected.

'''Supriya:''' Ssso, thisss is Ala Mhigo. These ssstrider cities are all edges and corners—they lack elegance.

'''Kan–E–Senna:''' So many lives lost, so much blood shed. But it will not be in vain.

'''Keeper of the Entwined Serpents:''' Not since Carteneau have we gathered in such numbers. But this shall be much, much different...

'''Storm Marshal Slafyrsyn:''' Looking at all these brave men and women in uniform, from all across Eorzea... None can accuse us of being an Alliance in name alone.

'''Merlwyb:'''It was no small fear, but we brought with us the main battery from the ''Triumph''. You should look forward to the show.

'''S'laiboli:''' The smell of saltwater in the air here reminds me of home. I find it quite comforting.

'''M'naago:''' Most of the Ala Mhigans in the residential district are Aan, so I doubt we'll have to deal with many imperial sympathizers.

'''Lyse:''' Cotter built those walls to give shelter to his brothers and sisters. And now our people's freedom rests on us tearing them down...

===Speaking with Alphinaud===
'''Alphinaud:''' The stage is set, and the players assembled. Eorzea has come at last to drive the invaders from her lands.
'''Alphinaud:''' What would Grandfather say if he were with us today...?

==Steps==
*Speak with [[Tansui]].
*Speak with [[Alphinaud]].
*Speak with [[Rasho]].
*Speak with [[Rasho]].

==Journal==
*Alphinaud is at a loss for words.

*The castle has fallen, and the imperial occupation of Doma is at an end. But what of Gosetsu? Is there truly no hope? Alphinaud is unwilling to assume the worst, and so Soroban agrees to search the crumbling ruin. Alas, when he returns, he tells you that naught remained of the keep for him to search. Though he found no body, it seems all but impossible that the samurai survived...

*Difficult though it is, you and your comrades must look to the future. Gosetsu would accept no less. The Domans who fought valiantly for their freedom are gathered in the enclave, and wait to receive their lord.

*Hien was raised to rule, and so the language of leadership comes naturally to him. But when faced with the prospect of addressing his countrymen in the wake of their victory, he hesitates, until you spur him to rise to the occasion with your characteristic wit. As you and the other Scions look on, he implores his countrymen not to grow complacent, for the true challenge lies in the days ahead, when they must come together to rebuild their broken nation. Judging from the faces of the gathered men and women, you have little reason to doubt that they will.

*Truly, there is no rest for the righteous, as the Scions can ill afford to remain in Doma and enjoy their victory. Gyr Abania still suffers under the rule of Zenos yae Galvus, and it is imperative that you return to the West with all possible haste.

*Rasho and Tansui understand the urgency of your cause, and agree to take you to Kugane, where you might secure passage to Limsa Lominsa aboard a larger ship. A generous gesture, no doubt, but one that will give the captain an excellent excuse to slip away from the festivities...

*On the docks of Kugane, you prepare to part ways with your Confederate allies. For an instant, Rasho lets slip his mask and thanks you earnestly for your deeds in service to Doma. And then, just like that, the mask is back in place, for some stories are destined to remain untold.

==Dialogue==
===Accepting the Quest (Cutscene)===
'''Alphinaud:''' ...Thank you.
The occupation is ended, then. And the people must be informed of our victory.
'''Alphinaud:''' But I will not simply give up Gosetsu for lost. Before aught else, we must needs search the ruins.

'''Soroban:''' Allow me, my friends. The castle is still collapsing into the river, and could easily drag you to your deaths. I can navigate the waters easily, without fear of drowning.

'''Alisaie:''' Be reasonable, Brother. You know he is right.

'''Yugiri:''' [Forename]. A word, if I may.
'''Yugiri:''' My lord withdraws into himself, unable to turn his thoughts from the keep. He needs us now, more than ever...

'''Soroban:''' My friends, I am returned. I swam as far into the ruins as I could...

'''Lyse:''' And...? Did you find him?

'''Soroban:''' ...Nay, lady. Naught remained of the keep for me to search.
'''Soroban:''' Undermined from below and shaken from above, the manner of its collapse was most unusual. If the floor beneath him gave way before the rest...it is not impossible that he could have been sent tumbling into the river.
'''Soroban:''' But the water is thick with silt and debris. Despite my best efforts, I could not find him. I am sorry.

'''Hien:''' ...There is naught for which you should apologize. Thank you, Soroban, for taking it upon yourself to search.
'''Hien:''' The castle is in ruins, and the people are eager to learn the fate of their nation. We leave at once.

'''Alphinaud:''' Are you sure, my lord?

'''Hien:''' The day is won, and the morrow beckons...
'''Hien:''' It falls to us to greet it.

'''Lyse:''' ...I'm going down to the docks to see if I can't get one of the Confederate ships to take us to the enclave.

'''Alisaie:''' Mayhap we should tell the others at the House of the Fierce to gather there?

'''Cirina:''' Magnai and Sadu know naught of what happened in the castle. I will go and tell them.

'''Hien:''' They fought valiantly and with honor, Cirina. I pray you tell them that as well.
'''Hien:''' You too, my friend, were instrumental in this triumph. I must insist that you be present when we bring these tidings to my people.

====Optional====
'''Soroban:''' My brothers of the Blue have called for me, but we shall speak again soon.

'''Alisaie:''' I wish I knew what to say, but I've never had my brother's way with words. It's...what he would have wanted? ...I–I'm sorry. This is not helping.

'''Alphinaud:''' Our Confederate allies have already set about ferrying the others to the Doman Enclave. By the time we arrive, all should be present and waiting.

'''Cirina:''' I cannot accompany you to the enclave. Magnai and Sadu will expect me to deliver the news of our victory to them in person.

'''Yugiri:''' You have witnessed the destruction wrought by the Empire, but nowhere is it more apparent than the enclave. Would that you could have seen it as it was...

'''Lyse:''' It seems Tansui was on his way as soon as he saw you flee the keep.

'''Hien:''' You've never actually been to the enclave, have you? It was a lively place...before Zenos sent his troops.

===Speaking with Tansui===
'''Tansui:''' ...You all look like shite.
'''Tansui:''' The captain thought you might need a ride to the enclave. Ready to come aboard?

'''< What will you say? >'''
'''< Let's go. >'''
'''< Give us a moment. >'''

'''''< Give us a moment. >'''''
'''Tansui:''' As you wish. They've waited twenty–five years. A few more minutes won't make a difference.
'''(Dialogue Ends)'''

'''''< Let's go. >'''''
'''Tansui:''' On you go, then. Sit wherever you like.
'''Tansui:''' I don't know what happened in there, but it's over. You won. That's cause enough for celeberation—and those people you're about to see need something to celebrate...

====Cutscene====
'''Rasho:''' We brought everyone here. You are the last to arrive.

'''Hien:''' I see. Thank you. We owe the Confederacy a great debt...

'''Rasho:''' I have waited twenty-five years for this moment. You owe us naught.

'''Formidable Farmer:''' Look! It's Lord Hien!

'''Yugiri:''' Some few words of encouragement would not go amiss, my lord.

'''Hien:''' Um...Right! Uh, yes. O-Of course...

'''< What will you say? >'''
'''< Off you trot, then. >'''
'''< You're their lord, remember. Stand tall! >'''
'''< Well, if you won't say something, I will. >'''

'''''< Off you trot, then. >'''''
'''Hien:''' Ummm... Er, um...right, um, right! Off─off I go!

'''''< You're their lord, remember. Stand tall! >'''''
'''Hien:''' Forgive me. This is rather more daunting than I had anticipated.
But you are right, I must be strong. Wish me luck.

'''''< Well, if you won't say something, I will. >'''''
'''Hien:''' Hah hah! Hearing you say that, I find my courage somehow renewed.
Much obliged.

'''(All)'''
'''Hien:''' We are a sorry lot, are we not. Tired, dirty, stinking of blood and sweat and ash. A people pushed to the point of breaking.
'''Hien:''' And yet we won.
'''Hien:''' The perseverance to endure decades of oppression. The will to carry on the legacy of those we have lost. These were the bonds that held us together and gave us the strength to reclaim our home.
'''Hien:''' After twenty-five hard years, the shadow of the Empire no longer darkens these lands, and we may at last look forward to the dawning of a new day. But, my friends, it will be a day of work.
'''Hien:''' So I ask you: have you yet the strength to stand?
'''Hien:''' To rise up with me once more, here and now, and begin to rebuild our homeland?

'''Alisaie:''' This will not end with Doma. We will see to that. Right, Lyse?

'''Lyse:''' Right!

'''Alphinaud:''' Indeed, this is but the beginning. The tide is turning, and it shall soon bear us back across the seas, and onward unto the next battlefield.

====Optional====
'''Hien:''' Twenty–five years... If only you were here to see it.

'''Formidable Farmer:''' Kami take me, I never believed this day would come! I'm sorry I doubted you before, my friend.

'''Wounded Elder:''' It's you! The woman/man who came to set us free. Of course. You must have had a hand in this. My thanks to you.

'''Isse:''' <sniffle> Mother, Father... I understand now. I do...

'''Azami:''' Why are you crying, Brother? Isn't today a good day?

'''Tsuranuki:''' 'Twas a year ago my lord Kaien died, and with him, the dream of Doma. Never again would we be free, I thought...
'''Tsuranuki:''' ...Miserable old fool that I am. But Doma lives! Doma rises! Doma will stand tall again! Till the end of my days will I labor to make it so!

'''Liberation Front Infantry:''' I want to shout and scream until my throat is hoarse. I want my fallen brothers and sister to know that it was not in vain!

'''Yugiri:''' It was not for naught. It was not for naught...

'''Cirina:''' Oh. Hien is not with you? N–No matter. The sun and moon were not fated to share the same sky.

'''Soroban:''' Oh, you will not be staying in the enclave?

'''Alisaie:''' We journeyed here from the opposite side of the world, but until now, it didn't seem half as far. I think that means our work here is done.

'''Lyse:''' I'm glad we could be a part of it. That we could see with our own eyes that things can change if people have the courage to stand up and fight.

===Speaking with Alphinaud (Cutscene)===
'''Alphinaud:''' Are you quite certain you would not prefer to stay awhile longer? There are sure to be festivities—at which you would be the guest of honor, like as not. Very well.
'''Alphinaud:''' There are other ways in which we might celebrate—by rejoining the fight for freedom in Gyr Abania, for one.
'''Alphinaud:''' Short though our time here has been, we have all come to regard this land and her people as our own, I think. But we have done that which we came here to do.
'''Alphinaud:''' Word of Doma's liberation will soon spread throughout the Empire, and we must seize this opportunity to rekindle the fires of liberation in the West.

'''Alisaie:''' We dare not allow the imperials a moment's respite, lest they march on Doma again. For the sake of all concerned, we should leave immediately.

'''Cirina:''' Did I hear you right? You are leaving?

'''Lyse:''' I'm afraid so. We've got our own battle to fight. What about you? Will you be heading back to the Steppe?

'''Cirina:''' Yes. The war here is ended, and there is no cause to remain. The Oronir and Dotharl have already withdrawn.
'''Cirina:''' I will follow them anon, but I wished to bid you farewell first.

'''Soroban:''' The Blue, too, must return to their homes, but we will be back. Doma has need of merchants and builders, and we are eager to offer our services!

'''Tansui:''' And just like that, our grand fellowship is broken? Without ceremony or pomp, you steal off into the dark?
'''Tansui:''' No matter. We have plenty to be getting on with. Places to be, people to rob, and so on. And the captain never was one for mingling.

'''Rasho:''' I am a pirate. Give me a song at the tavern, and I will be happy. Hobnobbing with Lord Hien? Nay.

'''Tansui:''' <sigh> No taste for the finer things...
'''Tansui:''' In any event, we need not part ways here. If you are for Kugane, we would be happy to take you. Her waters have always been...fruitful.

'''Cirina:''' I wish you well on your journey, my friends. May you ever walk in crimson.

'''Lyse:''' Thank you, Cirina. For everything.

'''Soroban:''' May the kami speed you on your way! Until we meet again!

====Optional====
'''Alphinaud:''' We have said our good–byes. Though it be with heavy hearts, let us board the boat and begin our long journey home.

'''Tansui:''' Didn't even think to tell Lord Hien you were leaving? Well... I'm sure you had your reasons.

===Speaking with Rasho===
'''Rasho:''' Naught remains undone? You are ready to depart?

'''< What will you say? >'''
'''< We're ready. >'''
'''< Not yet. >'''

'''''< Not yet. >'''''
'''Rasho:''' Oh? I thought matters in your homeland pressing. Mayhap I was mistaken.
'''(Conversation ends.)'''

'''''< We're ready. >'''''
'''Rasho:''' To Kugane, then...

====Optional====
'''Alphinaud:''' In a way, this too feels like a homecoming. How long has it been since Carvallain brought us here...?

'''Lyse:''' It's just as colorful as I remember...

'''Alisaie:''' I can still hear his voice... My ears haven't stopped ringing since he first barged his way into the Rising Stones, a veritable force of nature.

'''Tansui:''' It's a rare thing for us to sail into Kugane like common traders. I don't rightly recall the last time, but it will have been years.

===Speaking with Rasho===
'''Rasho:''' Have everything? Good. We will need to weigh anchor before the Sekiseigumi arrive.
'''Rasho:''' ...From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for what you did. Give my regards to the Ul'dahn.

===Accepting the Quest===
'''Hien:''' On second thought, [Forename], I ask that you return to the House of the Fierce without me, and tell Alphinaud to call the others together for a meeting.
'''Hien:''' It is imperative that the Kojin emissary be in attendance as well. I shall join you anon.

====Optional====
'''Hien:''' Do not worry, my friend. I will not be far behind.

'''Alisaie:''' Oh, there you are. I saw you leave with Lord Hien earlier. Where is he?

===Speaking with Alphinaud at the House of the Fierce===
'''Alphinaud:''' Lord Hien wishes to discuss the details of our plan? Very well, if he insists. I shall summon the others at once.
'''Alphinaud:''' As for the Kojin, I believe one of their emissaries was already en route. Nevertheless, I shall contact them to make certain.

====Cutscene====
'''Alisaie:''' May I present the Blue Kojin's emissary.

'''Soroban:''' Greetings and well met, old friends! The elder sends his regards.

'''Lyse:''' Soroban! It's good to have you with us!

'''Hien:''' If, uh, you might humor me...
'''Hien:''' Thank you for coming, Soroban. Doubtless you have already been informed of our plans and the role we would have your people play. However, I seek your counsel as a Kojin of the Blue.
'''Hien:''' Be it by spell or siegecraft, could your forces destroy the underwater foundations of Doma Castle's outer wall?

'''Soroban:''' Hmm... Explosives, coupled with a few incantations... Yes, that might produce sufficient force. Such a thing could indeed be done.

'''Hien:''' Then I wish to revise the plan.
'''Hien:''' Instead of assisting the Confederacy in securing the enclave, I would have the Kojin advance upstream, beneath the water, and breach a segment of the outer wall.
'''Hien:''' I mean to flood Doma Castle.

'''Gosetsu:''' My lord, the castle is a sacred symbol–the very heart of our nation! To destroy it is unthinkable, unconscionable–you cannot do this!

'''Hien:''' I can and I will if it improves our chances. By flooding the castle we remove the better part of their forces from the field and force Yotsuyu to retreat to the highest levels of the keep. Tell me that is not a worthwhile trade.

'''Gosetsu:''' But, my lord...that castle was entrusted to you by your father, and his father before him. I say to you again: it is the heart of our nation.

'''Hien:''' Stone walls do not a nation make, my friend. Her people do.
And as long as we yet live, we can rebuild.
'''Hien:''' So let us only think of this battle. Of victory here and now. For without that, we have no future.

'''Alphinaud:''' I see that you are resolved, Lord Hien, and I would not presume to gainsay your decision.

'''Soroban:''' I will inform the elder of your revised stratagem, and instruct our sappers to make ready.

'''Hien:''' Our preparations are all but complete. Once we receive word from our Kojin allies, we shall set our plans in motion. We shall fight, and we shall prevail.

====Optional====
'''Hien:''' Thank you for accompanying me earlier. 'Twas in that moment of clarity that I understood what we needed to do.

'''Alphinaud:''' It is...unorthodox, but I am in no position to speak against it.

'''Yagoro:''' My lord and his comrades are in inspiration. To spur our countrymen to rise up once more within a year of our defeat is a feat no others could accomplish.

'''Haname:''' We are to flood the castle , then... So be it. I will inform the Xaela.

'''Motojiro:''' Mayhap it is for the best. According to our spies in the castle, they do strange and terrible things in the lowest levels. Experiments involving men and magitek. If we can destroy their work before our forces enter the castle...

'''Alisaie:''' We are fast approaching that moment when all is in order and we have naught to do but wait...frustrating as it is. <sigh> Well, when the time comes, I wish you the best of luck. Oh, and remember: no noble sacrifices or anything similarly stupid.

'''Kaidate:''' Lord Hien may be young, but none among us question his leadership! We will defend him and his people to the last!

===Speaking with your comrades===
'''Yugiri:''' No plan is perfect, and there is ever room for improvement. I expect my comrades will be refining their approach until the moment they begin.
'''Yugiri:''' In case you are unaware, the other jonin will lead the assault on the Moon Gates, not I. My place is at Lord Hien's side.
'''(Optional)'''
'''Yugiri:''' That my lord saw fit to let me accompany him came as a relief. There is nowhere I would rather be than by his side when the fighting begins.

'''Lyse:''' If there's nothing else, I'll head back to Namai. Tsuranuki's working hard, and Isse's doing what he can to help, but maybe there's more that I can do too.
'''Lyse:''' He was like a different person when he began hammering those plates. Younger, brighter, full of life and hope...

'''Gosetsu:''' The plan is set, and all that can be done has been done. Rest and relaxation are now paramount, for tomorrow we may die.
'''Gosetsu:''' Have you too not done enough? Will you not pause a moment to gather yourself on the eve of our grand design? Go not unto battle with weary eyes or lingering regrets, my friend.
'''(Optional)'''
'''Gosetsu:''' Ere you go to war, savor peace, for you may never know it again.

===Speaking with Alphinaud===
'''Alphinaud:''' Soroban informs me that his sappers will be ready within the day, which means that we can proceed as planned and attack Doma Castle tomorrow.
'''Alphinaud:''' Considering the key role that you will play, I think it only prudent that you refrain form further labors and rest until tomorrow. Agreed?

'''< What will you say? >'''
'''< Far be it from me to refuse... >'''
'''< No rest for the righteous! >'''

'''''< No rest for the righteous! >'''''
'''Alphinaud:''' True enough, true enough. When you have seen to your sundry tasks and are ready to retire, I pray you let me know.
'''(Conversation Ends, must select the other dialogue option to continue)'''

'''''<Far be it from me to refuse. >'''''
'''Alphinaud:''' We shall speak again in the morning. Take care, my friend...

====Cutscene====
'''Lyse:''' You're awake. I was just, umm...Well, they threw me out, actually.
Told me I needed to get some sleep, ready for the big day.
'''Lyse:''' Not long now, eh? I'm nervous, of course, but I also feel like...like I didn't know where I was going, but maybe, finally...
'''Lyse:''' Something's gonna change, you know? Really, really change. And when the dust has settled, we'll see what we've won...and what we've lost...
'''Lyse:''' I'm going to give it my all tomorrow. Everything I've seen and felt...I won't let it be for nothing.
'''Lyse:''' Right. Off to bed! Don't want to overdo it—and neither should you.
'''Lyse:''' Oh, but before you sleep, you should look in on Alphinaud and Alisaie.
Quietly, of course.

'''Hien:''' Ho, another restless soul. Come, come—raise a glass to freedom.

'''Gosetsu:''' Mmm, good, good. I should be interested to know her/his thoughts on the matter!

'''Hien:''' That's enough, Gosetsu. You'll not convince anyone with your drunken ramblings.
'''Hien:''' We've talked about this. All of us. We are flooding the castle tomorrow, and that's the end of it.

'''Gosetsu:''' I know, I know! I accepted your decision, and I do not intend to go back on my word. Nevertheless, as the battle draws near, I cannot help but recall our many travails, and it fair compels me to speak...
'''Gosetsu:''' In all my time serving as a leader of men, there are two failures which haunt me to this day.
'''Gosetsu:''' The first, our defeat at the hands of the Empire twenty-five years past, and the subsequent imprisonment of your father.
'''Gosetsu:''' Long did I consider offering up my life in atonement, until Lord Kaien, allowed at last to receive visitors, called for me of all people...
'''Gosetsu:''' "For my unborn child," he said, "for my dearest Shun—live!".
'''Gosetsu:''' My second failure, of course, was the betrayal of the selfsame command, when in the rebellion I failed to protect not only Lord Kaien—but Lord Hien too...
'''Gosetsu:''' That I yet live, having known such disgrace, is an affront to the kami themselves...
'''Gosetsu:''' Yet you...all of you...saw fit to grant this shameful creature, this failure, another chance...to serve a greater purpose...
'''Gosetsu:''' Thank you... for pitying an old fool...

'''Hien:''' Now, now, it is far too soon for that. Save your tears for the morrow. You may be sure we will have ample cause to shed them, be they for joy or despair.
'''Hien:''' Bah! even that sounds morose. We who yet walk the path should not think too much on the destination. When the hour arrives, we shall welcome what comes with open arms.
'''Hien:''' He is right about one thing, though—we have you and yours to thank for this chance.
'''Hien:''' All debts will be repaid. On that you have my word. But first, we must live past tomorrow, no?
'''Hien:''' If you've no intention of sleeping, Yugiri, you may as well join us.

'''Yugiri:''' Forgive me, my lord. I did not mean to, uh...If that is your will..

Two to three Gulo Gulo will spawn near the river on the far north west location and at the two northern locations. Thus it is possible to change the cutscene text by beating Hien, who will always return with six.

==Steps==
*Speak with [[Hien]].
*Use the [[Sack of Entrails|entrails]] to lure out gulo gulo and slay them.
==Dialogue==
===Accepting the Quest (Cutscene)===
'''Cirina:''' My friends, I must warn you. The path upon which you embark is fraught with peril.
'''Cirina:''' You will journey unto the far reaches of the Steppe to confront a terrible foe, as did the warrior Bardam in the days of yore. Three days he battled with the demon ere he returned to his people. So it is written, so must it be.
'''Cirina:''' Many who follow in his footsteps perish, lacking in strength of body and mind. Therefore...
'''Cirina:''' We must treat you to a great feast!
'''Cirina:''' Have...have I said something strange? The hungry fox starves at the bull's testicles, therefore warriors should be well fed on the eve of battle!

'''Hien:''' She does have a point. You have been keeping busy in my absence. A brief repast may be in order, lest we collapse of fatigue and malnourishment in the midst of our trial.

'''Cirina:''' Yes, just so! However, it will take time to prepare.

'''Lyse:''' Is there anything we can do to help? It might also give us a chance to learn more about your people and their ways.

'''Cirina:''' Well, if you insist, I am sure that the others would be glad of your assistance.
'''Cirina:''' Hmm... Would you go and speak with Dorbei, Lyse?
'''Cirina:''' As for you three—you can help me with another task.
'''Cirina:''' For today's feast the gods decreed that we lure gulo gulo to slaughter with entrails. Perhaps you could be the ones to do this?

'''Gosetsu:''' That your people look to the gods for guidance I can understand, but in your daily meals! I say, your grandmother must be quite busy.

'''Cirina:''' Some days more than others. But every night we come together around the cookfire.

'''Hien:''' Even babes must earn their keep on the Steppe. Give over the entrails, Cirina. We will bring you a bounty of meat!

====Optional====
'''Cirina:''' Hien has the entrails. Good hunting, [Forename]!

'''Temulun:''' All is in accordance with their design. Mol Iloh is your home.

'''Gosetsu:''' Shall the gulo gulo be so easily lured to the slaughter, I wonder...

===Speaking with Hien===
'''Hien:''' A word of advice. Our quarry is wont to avoid the Xaela and their settlements, but is fond of flowing waters...
'''Hien:''' Hmm. A thought occurs to me. How about we make a game of it, [Forename]?
'''Hien:''' I have six bags of entrails with which we may lure our gulo gulo. Three for you, and three for me.
'''Hien:''' Whoever returns with the greater portion shall be declared the winner. What say you?
'''Hien:''' Then it is settled! Gosetsu will stand as witness. Let the game begin!

'''(Optional)'''
'''Gosetsu:''' The rules are simple. Whoever returns with the greater portion shall be declared the winner.
'''Gosetsu:''' You have but a limited quantity of bait. Use it wisely, [Forename]. Seek places far from men and near water.

===Showing the gulu gulu meat to Gosetsu===
'''Gosetsu:''' Oh, have you used all your bait? In that case, let us see the fruits of your labor!

====Cutscene====
'''Hien:''' Ho! It would seem that, at the very least, you are the ''faster'' hunter.
'''Hien:''' But speed is not everything! For my part, I slew six gulo gulo!

'''Gosetsu:''' Aye, that you have, my lord. As for [Forename]...

'''(If slew less than Hien)'''
'''Gosetsu:''' This day you are twice the hunter as she/he, for our friend delivered unto me but three portions - half your sum, my lord.

'''Hien:''' Oho! And there you have it. I shall try not to let it go to my head.
'''Hien:''' I know better than to expect the hawk to show her/his talons on a whim. Nay, when the time comes, I expect you will prove yourself more than my match.

'''(If slew equal to Hien)'''
'''Gosetsu:''' Six gulo gulo did she/he slay too! 'Twould seem you have met your match, my lord.

'''Hien:''' Hah hah hah! Of all the possible outcomes, this is perhaps the most amusing.
'''Hien:''' And perhaps the most auspicious. Though I would have preferred to win the day, I shall settle for the whimsy of the kami.

'''(If slew more than Hien)'''
'''Gosetsu:''' The meat of eight gulo gulo did she/he bring! A fine day's work, and undeniably the greater portion.

'''Hien:''' Bah! A loss, is it? And how confident I was in my chances.
'''Hien:''' Nevertheless, it is a testament to your skills as a hunter and a warrior. How fortunate I am to count one so talented among my allies!

'''(All)'''
'''Hien:''' And with that, our game is concluded. Let us return to Mol Iloh forthwith—and let us have [Forename] present our meal to Cirina.
'''Hien:''' Mayhap you are unfamiliar with the traditional Xaela cuisine? Let not its appearance deceive you—it is quite hearty and nourishing.
'''Hien:''' Were it not so, I doubt they could have nursed me back to health. Heh heh, you should have seen the state I was in...

====Optional====
'''Hien:''' She should be impressed when she sees the quantity we have brought.

'''Gosetsu:''' Such kindness and generosity they have shown not only my lord, but us all. Victory in the Naadam will be a fitting repayment!

===Delivering the sack of gulo gulo meat to Cirina===
'''Cirina:''' You are returned, [Forename]. How was your hunt?
'''''<Hand Over Sack of Gulo Gulo Meat>'''''
'''Cirina:''' My word, this is impressive! Or were you so hungry that you felt the need to kill so many?
'''Cirina:''' Well! I shall endeavor not to disappoint you all with my cooking!
