FFVIII Reference or not?
This has the same name as the ultimate ability from Selphie's Slot limit break in FFVIII. The general FF wiki lists them as the same recurring ability.

In FFVIII, The End will kill anything immediately, including bosses and superbosses, only sparing the undead. It is Selphie's equivalent to Setzer's Joker's Death and Cait Sith's Game Over, both of which have a clear connection to the Reaper class as a whole: After landing on the jackpot combo, they summon a spirit of death that instantly kills enemies or allies. Cait Sith's summon even looks like a grim reaper.

But if it's named after Selphie's signature version? That's the absolute funniest one they could've picked. Instead of a grim reaper, The End summons a peaceful field in the mountains, with flowers and butterflies, and glittering motes of light... and then the enemy drops dead. Nothing grim or dark here! Only sweet, sweet victory! Hooray!

So, is it a reference, at least by virtue of being related to Game Over? Or are the differences between VIII's version and XIV's version too much to chalk up to comedic irony? Nellie (talk) 21:48, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Setting
The world's lifeforce, the Lifestream, is a flow of spiritual energy that gives life to everything. It is processed by the Shinra Electric Power Company to "Mako". This weakens the planet and threatens all existence and life. The eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE is opposed by the Shinra groups Turks and SOLDIER, later ones being enhanced by Mako. AVALANCE wants to stop Shinra from further processing Mako.
Story
AVALANCHE plans to destroy a Shinra Mako reactor in the city of Midgar, but the attack goes wrong. Cloud Strife, the main protagonist, is thrown into the slums of Midgar where he meets Aerith, one of the last remaining Cetra. They witness how Shinra let an upper part of the city collapse on the main headquarters of AVALANCHE, killing members and innocent civilians. Shinra captures Aerith, since they believe she can lead them to the "Promised Land" for further exploitation. Cloud, Barret and Tifa rescue Aerith and escape from Midgar and discover that Sephiroth has killed president Shinra, although he was presumed to have died five years ago. The party than chases Sephiroth around the Planet, with the newly announced President Rufus on their trail.

At a Cetra temple, Sephiroth reveals he wants to use "Black Materia" to cast "Meteor" on the planet. He wants to absorb the lifestream that would try to heal the wound on the planet to ascend to godhood. Aerith prays to the planet for help at the Cetra, but is killed by Sephiroth who then flees. The party then learns about Jenova, an alien like lifeform who landed on the planet 2.000 years ago. It infected the Cetra with a virus and nearly wiped them out. A small group was able to seal Jenova away, but it was unearthed by Shinra and used for experimentation. This led to the creation of Sephiroth. When he learned this five years prior, he went insane and killed all nearby townspeople before vanishing.

At the Northern Crater, the party learns that they have been fighting Jenova clones created by the Scientist Hojo. Cloud confronts the real Sephiroth as he is killing his clones to reunite Jenova's cells and is manipulated to give him the Black Materia. Sephiroth than taunts by altering his memories, suggesting that he is another clone. Sephiroth summons Meteor and seals the Crater, Cloud falls into the Lifestream and Rufus of the Turks captures the rest of the party.

After escaping Shinra the party finds Cloud in a catatonic state due to Mako poisoning. Tifa stays with him as his caretaker, but when a planetary defense force called Weapon attacks the island they are on, they both fall into the Lifestream again. Tifa helps Cloud to reconstruct his memories, were he realises that he was an infantryman, and the man in his memories was his friend Zack. After Sephiroth vanished, Hojo experimented on Cloud and Zack, injecting them with Jenova Cells and Mako. They escaped, but Zack was killed. The trauma triggered an identity crisis in Cloud, basing his own person around Zack and his own fantasies. Cloud accepts his past and reunites with the party, who reveals that Aerith' prayer to the Planet was successful, but Sephiroth prevented it from having an effect.

Shinra fails to destroy Meteor, but manages to defeat a Weapon and punctures the Northern Crater where Sephiroth is sealed. After killing Hojo who is revealed to be Sephiroth's father the party descends to the Planet's core and defeat Sephiroth and Jenova. The party escapes and Holy is summoned once again, destroying Meteor with help from the Lifestream.
Trivia
* Many weapons in this set are based on weapons from Final Fantasy IX, keeping with Dawntrail making numerous allusions to the title.
** The Historia Knives are based on Zidane's starting Dagger, which is the same weapon that inspires Garnet to choose "Dagger" as an alias. The Historia Shotels are based on his Mage Masher, and the Historia Blade is based on his Masamune. The Historia Planisphere is based on the crossguard of his ultimate weapon, the aptly named Ultima Weapon.
** The Historia Cane is based on Garnet's Healing Rod.
** The Historia Staff is based on Vivi's Oak Staff.
** The Historia Sword is based on the sword Steiner uses in cutscenes, and the matching Historia Hoplon is based on the shields used by his order, the Knights of Pluto. The Historia Claymore is based on his starting Broadsword.
** The Historia Spear is based on Freya's starting Javelin.
Synopsis
Setting
The nations of Alexandria, Lindblum, Burmecia and Cleyra lie on the Mist continent of the world Gaia. They are seperated by large mountain ranges. Alexandria is a warmongering monarchy that controls the east of the continent. Lindblum lies to the southwest on a plateau and is a technology advanced hub for airship travel. Burmecia lies to the northwest and is showered by endless rain. Cleyra is situated in a giant tree in a desert, protected by a sandstorm.

The Outer, Lost and Forgotten Continents are home to several other but smaller civilizations, like dwarves, black mage drones and humanoid summoners. There is also the Iifa Tree, which roots creates the mist that is distributed throughout the world and stimulates the fighting instinct in humainoids.
Story
Cid tasks the group Tantalus to kidnap Princess Garnet of Alexandria who willingly comes with them, for she already planned to flee beforehand. She wants to warn Cid about her mother. On their way to Lindblum, they find out that Queen Brahne is mass-producing soulless black mage soldiers. When arriving in Lindblum, Cid confirms that he ordered to kidnap Garnet to protect her from her mother. The party learns that Alexandria has invaded Burmecia with an army of Black Mages, the party splits: Zidane and Vivi join Freya to investigate, while Garnet and Steiner secretly returns to Alexandria to reason with Queen Brahne.

Zidane's team find the Alexandrian forces are lead by Beatrix and had help from Kuja. The refugees have fled to Cleyra. Brahne takes Garnet prisoner, extracts her eidolons, and attacks Cleyra with Odin. Zidane's group defend the city, escapes on airship to Alexandria and free Garnet. Meanwhile, Queen Brahne attacks Lindblum with the eidolon Atomos. Cid explains that Kuja helps Brahne with knowledge to use eidolons and supports her with black mages. The party tracks Kuja to the Outer Continent. Queen Brahne hires bounty hunters to capture Garnet, but the party can defeat them. They meet Eiko who leads them to the Iifa Tree, where they learn that Kuja uses the Mist to create Black Mages and Vivi was a prototype. The party defeats the monster that produces the Mist. After another attempt of kidnapping Garnet she learns about her heritage as a summoner and that Queen Brahne adopted her. At the Iifa Tree, Queen Brahne tries to kill Kuja with an eidolon so she can rule unopposed, but he takes control of the eidolon and destroys her and her army.

Garnet is crowned Queen of Alexandria, and during the coronation Kuja attacks the kingdom. Together with Eiko Garnet summons an extremely powerful eidolon in defense. Kuja tries to steal the eidolon to kill his master Garland, but he arrived and destroys it. The party chases Kuja through a portal, that lead them to Terra. There they learn that there world is dying, and that they wanted to merge with Gaia. Garland has been producing soulless vessels, and for thousands of years he has been replacing deceased Gaian souls with hibernating Terrans with the Mist of the Iifa Tree. Once the merge would've happened, those souls could return to the soulless vessels and bring chaos and war to Gaia. Kuja had betrayed Garland to avoid becoming occupied by a Terran soul. Kuja defeats Garland, and he reveals that he designed Zidane to be his replacement. Enraged, Kuja destroys Terra and escapes to the Iifa Tree. There, the party enters Memoria and reaches the origin of the universe, the so called Crystal World. They defeat Kuja and prevent him to destroy the crystal of life. After defeating Necron the Tree collapses and the party flees, though Zidane stays behind to rescue Kuja.

A year later, the party has moved on, and during a performance of Tantalus Zidane is reunited with Queen Garnet.
Synopsis

Synopsis

Gargant
*Chilling Chirp: Party-wide magical damage.
*Almighty Racket: The boss will face a random player and use a late telegraphed 180 degree frontal cleave. Get behind.
*The boss will then become untargetable, jump outside the arena, and begin crawling around. Take note of its location, as the sand falls will obscure it. When it stops (always behind a sand fall), it will re-emerge and use a late telegraphed wide line AoE charge (Aerial Assault) through the arena.
*AoE combinations
**Chilling Chirp will now summon two circle AoE telegraphs on opposite cardinals.
**Almighty Racket: Get behind.
**Three circle AoE telegraphs will then appear along with spread marker AoEs on each player (Sedimentary Debris) dealing magical damage. Spread out in the safe zone.
*Earthsong: Spawns two sets of untargetable Sand Sphere adds, each of which will use a telegraphed point-blank AoE (Sphere Shatter). The first set has 7 spheres and the second set has 6. The boss will jump outside again and being moving around, so players will need to keep track of its location while dodging the AoEs.
*Almighty Racket + Sedimentary Debris
*Trap Jaws: Telegraphed physical tankbuster.

Soldier S0
*Field of Scorn: Party-wide magical damage.
*Thunderous Slash: Telegraphed magical tankbuster.
*Sector Bisector: The boss will brandish its glowing sword to its left or right, while a small purple wave of energy will appear at its feet on that side. It will then spawn six linked clones of itself in a hexagon, all with the same animation. The clones will then begin disappearing in a clockwise or counterclockwise pattern. The last clone to disappear will emit a half-room cleave from its location based on which side is glowing.
*Ordered Fire: Spawns four untargetable Add Blocks in pairs outside of the arena. These will use a late telegraphed line AoE in front of them, leaving one quadrant of the arena safe. At the same time, the boss will cast Static Force, placing conal spread markers on everyone, so they should spread out in the safe quadrant. The spread resolve shortly after the line AoEs, so there is time to adjust back into the previously unsafe areas for more space.
*Sector Bisector is used again but now summons 8 clones in an irregular formation. When most of the clones have disappeared, the boss will cast Electric Excess, a spread AoE on all players dealing magical damage. Spread out in the region that is safe from the half-room cleave from the last clone to disappear.

Indefatigable Defense: Valia Pira
The boss is immobile and will remain at the center of the arena but can be turned.

*Entropic Sphere: Party-wide magical damage.
*Coordinate March: The boss will tether two tiles with magenta tethers and the edge of the south two tiles with blue tethers. The magenta tethers will spawn a magenta orb on the tile, while the purple tethers will each spawn an electrope cube cluster that will travel along the blue tracks on the floor. When the cubes touch an orb, it will emit an untelegraphed plus-shaped AoE that will hit the row and column of tiles that the orb was on. For this first set, players can dodge into the first AoE towards the middle of the arena once it activates.
*The turrets activate... Two of the four turrets at the east wall will begin glowing, indicating they will use a late telegraphed line AoE in front of them, each hitting a row of the arena.
*Electric Field: Each player will receive a conal spread marker while multiple conal AoE floor telegraphs will appear. The spread markers and telegraphs will begin expanding, so spread out in regions that have a large gap between the initial telegraphs. The spread AoEs deal magical damage.
*Neutralize Front Lines: The boss will face one cardinal and use a late telegraphed 180 degree frontal cleave, while all players receive a spread marker AoE (Hypercharged Light) dealing magical damage. Spread out behind the boss.
*Coordinate March is used again. However, once the cubes start moving, the boss will cast Bloodmarch, teleporting one magenta orb to a new location on the other track (indicated by the arrow tether). This orb will always explode first.
*Deterrent Pulse: Line stack AoE marker on one player, dealing magical damage.
*Coordinate March is used again, but now summons three orbs. In addition, this is combined with the turret line AoEs and Bloodmarch. The first orb will explode, followed by the turret line AoEs, followed by the second orb (which was teleported), and finally the third orb.
After the fight
Shale: Good work. Now, proceed to the access hatch and head inside.

Royal Radius (area 2)
Shale: Everkeep's construction was apparently a constant battle against the rising water level.
Shale: Even during the war, the people labored to maintain the castle. It meant a lot to them.
Shale: It's upsetting to think that Preservation's terminal is in this place...
Shale: Hold on... Someone's jam...mmunications! Stay alert!

Receiving Room (boss 2)
Calyx: So you have come. Let us measure your strength.

Soldier S0: I am the soldier S0, of Alexandria's castle-guard. By order of the royal knights, I shall dispatch all intruders.
Soldier S0: Releasing limiters... Initiating mobile combat maneuvers.
Soldier S0: Calling reinforcements. Together we shall triumph.

After the fight
Soldier S0: Combat functions...inoperable... Forgive my failure...
Calyx: That was hardly a challenge, I see.
Calyx: You will show me more. I bid you press on.

Grand Hall (area 3)
Calyx: You are untroubled thus far, but I have something that may test you yet.

Chamber of Patience (boss 3)
-voiced cutscene start
Calyx: We still lack sufficient data. Very well. Let us see how you perform against this.
-cutscene end

Calyx: This machine has long guarded these crumbling halls.
Calyx: How will you handle this?
Calyx: Let us introduce more weaponry.

System: The turrets activate...

Calyx: Let us see what this yields.
Calyx: Perhaps a new approach to assess your adaptability.
Calyx: Still alive. How unfortunate.
Calyx: Were you to die here, it would save me trouble later.
Calyx: I'm beginning to understand how you were able to defeat Queen Eternal.

-voiced cutscene start
Calyx: That will do. We have enough to proceed with an analysis.
-cutscene end

Optional post-duty pop-ups
-optional start
Krile: Shale and Sphene shouldn't be far behind.

G'raha Tia: And so the trap was sprung, as expected.

Wuk Lamat: Where are you hiding, Calyx!?
-optional end

Duty Support dialogue
-optional start
Foundation Sector (area 1)
G'raha Tia: It seems we must clear a path through these creatures.
Krile: Indeed. Let us proceed with caution.
Krile: Let us press on.

Wuk Lamat: Now to put my time training on the beach to good use!
Krile: The sand has built up over the long years...

Sediment Funnel (boss 1)
Wuk Lamat: Whoa! That's a big bug!
G'raha Tia: Has it been using this chamber as its lair...?

Wuk Lamat: Huh? Where's it going?
Krile: Is it moving along the pipes?
G'raha Tia: I don't think it's trying to flee...

Wuk Lamat: where did it hide!?
Krile: On your guard, everyone!
G'raha Tia: It means to catch us by surprise!

Wuk Lamat: Here it comes again!
Krile: What a tiresome foe...
G'raha Tia: This time... From over there!

After the fight
Krile: Hmph. What a vexing creature that was.
G'raha Tia: To think it was clever enough to use the pipes and sand to its advantage...

Royal Radius (area 2)
Wuk Lamat: Wait, is that...the castle!?
Krile: Look. Could that be...?
Wuk Lamat: ...It's the castle!?

Krile: Was Shale's transmission cut off!?
Wuk Lamat: We knew it wouldn't be easy. Let's stay strong and keep going!

Receiving Room (boss 2)
Krile: That voice... Calyx!?
G'raha Tia: Is he testing us against that mechanical soldier?

Wuk Lamat: What!? Copies!?
G'raha Tia: It moves so quickly...
Krile: What are we up against now?

Wuk Lamat: We won't be tricked again!
G'raha Tia: Remain calm—we can evade its attacks!
Krile: Focus and follow the movements!

Wuk Lamat: Even more of them!?
Krile: Ungh... My head is spinning.
G'raha Tia: No doubt it will fight to the last...

After the fight
G'raha Tia: It was following orders... Does an even fiercer machine await us?
Wuk Lamat: Fine by me. If he wants a show, let's give him one!

Grand Hall (area 3)
Wuk Lamat: Gah! They came out of nowhere!
Krile: What a fright!

Krile: Is it guarding the door?
G'raha Tia: All the more reason to see just what lies beyond.
G'raha Tia: I don't believe it intends to let us pass...

Chamber of Patience (boss 3)
Wuk Lamat: What is that? A floating rock?
Krile: Something's carved into it... Alexandria's emblem, perhaps?

G'raha Tia: Stay alert!
Wuk Lamat: Those things started moving!

Krile: It comes again!
Wuk Lamat: Is anywhere safe!?
G'raha Tia: Something's different...
Krile: Is the lightning intensifying?

G'raha Tia: Steel your nerves and make ready to dodge!
Krile: The red light changed positions!
Wuk Lamat: Those move too!? No fair!
Trivia
This armor set is based on the outfits of the main cast of Final Fantasy IX, in line with the numerous other FFIX references in the Dawntrail expansion.
*The Fending/Maiming gear is based on Steiner's outfit. The Maiming gear's color scheme is based on Beatrix's outfit, who shows up as a guest character and uses several of the same abilities as Steiner.
*The Striking/Scouting gear is based on Amarant's outfit. The Scouting gear's color scheme is based on Zidane's outfit. The Tantalus Attire added much earlier in patch 3.15 is directly based on Zidane's outfit.
*The Aiming gear is based on Freya's outfit, although she is originally a Dragoon.
*The Healing/Casting head is based on Garnet, albeit using her white mage hood disguise rather than her base outfit. The boots, gloves, and legs are from Vivi's outfit.
