| description = Your latest odd job commission brings you together with one Y'nazqha, a gleaner who finds herself in possession of an unusual book inherited from her father and mentor. It contains a rendition of The Merchant's Tale, a fable passed down through generations in Corvos. While the beautifully illuminated pages of the manuscript set it apart from common storybooks, its most singular feature is the enchantment which can pull the very mind of its readers into the story.

And so it is you are thrust into the role of bodyguard for Y'nazqha, who becomes the eponymous merchant while journeying within the tale. Together you must travel through a world steeped in folklore and find a treasure of immeasurable worth─treasure grand enough to stir even the most hardened heart.
Level Sync
Unlike the three previous variant dungeons, The Merchant's Tale allows players to level to up to 100.

The level of all participants will be adjusted upwards to 100, and item level will be adjusted upwards or downwards to 765. Furthermore, materia bonuses will be ignored, regardless of the item level of gear affixed with materia. Please ensure that a full set of gear is equipped when entering this duty.

Experience will be gained based on a player's unsynced level and rewarded to the class or job equipped upon defeating the boss and completing the duty. Players with an unsynced level of 100 or above will receive Allagan tomestones as a reward.

Journal
*Deryk is awaiting word from Krile.

*Outside Revenant's Toll, Deryk informs you that Krile and G'raha Tia are still busy compiling the findings of your investigation of the phantom realm. While awaiting developments, he suggests paying a visit to Snoegeim in the Omphalos, and together you set off.

*Snoegeim reveals that, while the Twelve have not appeared since your crew was last gathered, each of them apparently desires to speak with you in private; if you were to call to them before the entrances to their respective heavens, chances are they will answer. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, you begin taking yourself around the Omphalos.

*Having spoken with the Twelve to your satisfaction, you join the wait for Krile and G'raha Tia. When they eventually arrive, they share their finding that the deities expended a tremendous amount of aether in the course of battle. Before engaging them further, it is decided that you will seek out the watcher on the moon, who is believed to be the thirteenth unnamed being mentioned by the monument, in order to learn more about their objective. With your course decided, you promptly set off for the Watcher's Palace in Mare Lamentorum.

*Having confirmed that he is indeed the unnamed being, the watcher proceeds to explain the nature of the Twelve. Like him, they are entities created by Hydaelyn, charged with watching over the world after reality was sundered. And though he is unable to disclose the truth of their desire, he gives his guarantee that it will not visit harm upon mankind. Thus reassured, you and your companions decide to return to the Omphalos to continue engaging the gods.

*No sooner do you arrive in the Omphalos than Llymlaen and Thaliak appear before you. When G'raha Tia expresses to them his concern that doing battle dilutes their being, it is Deryk who answers─thereby revealing himself to be Oschon. The Wanderer promises that the truth will be revealed in the innermost part of their realm, before he and his brethren take their leave in anticipation of your coming.

*While saddened by the revelation of Deryk's true identity, you and your companions are determined to do the best you can by the Twelve. As before, the task of confronting the gods in their sanctums falls to you, and you turn to see to your preparations.

※Thaleia can be accessed via the Duty Finder.

*Fighting your way through breathtaking realms of water and wind, you strike down the three gods in succession before coming face-to-face with the Twelve's combined form. This mighty being, too, must fall by your hand if you are to grant the gods their hearts' desire.

*At the end of a furious struggle, you succeed in overcoming your foe, and are joined by your companions just as the Twelve reveal the true nature of their desire: to give themselves unto the star as a blessing. While this means they must fade from existence, their stabilizing influence shall endure in the form of the instrument of blessing, a great contraption which they created to receive of mortal hopes in their stead. So it is that, one by one, the gods bid you farewell and disappear amidst blinding light─all except for Oschon who reappears before you as Deryk.

*Like everyone, Krile is surprised that Deryk is standing there. While she is curious as to what happened, above all else, she is overjoyed for a friend returned.

Dialogue
Faded Spirit: Where...when... How long...?

Dreaming Spirit: Was it truly...so long ago...?

Forlorn Spirit: We were happy... At peace with the star.
Forlorn Spirit: We nurtured it. Helped it grow. With our will, our creations...

Somber Spirit: We were the star's beating heart. Its life...
Somber Spirit: Every soul a drop of blood flowing through its veins...
Somber Spirit: To live. To learn, to create...to make better.
Somber Spirit: The star flourished...as did we.
Somber Spirit: Do you remember...?

Temperamental Spirit: We and the star were fulfilled...
Temperamental Spirit: Wanted for naught, mourned for naught...
Temperamental Spirit: So why... Why did it have to end!?
Temperamental Spirit: The Final Days taught us to fear a death forced upon us.
Temperamental Spirit: The injustice of duties and dreams left unfulfilled. The grief of unexpected partings...
Temperamental Spirit: Swift as darkness, cold as ash.
Temperamental Spirit: Such tragedy, yet no catharsis! Such truth, yet no consolation...

Anguished Spirit: Our perfection came crumbling down. Such overwhelming despair. In that moment, we knew. The end was nigh.
Anguished Spirit: The faintest glimmer of hope remained. We gave our lives that others may live. We gave ourselves...to Zodiark.
Entreating Spirit: Zodiark...our lord and savior.
Supplicating Spirit: To forge our world anew...
Lamenting Spirit: To live and love again...
Dutiful Spirit: Become one with the star...
Anguished Spirit: Fill earth and heaven with life. Birth paradise where fear is distant memory.

???: Pardon me, but would you be so kind as to step aside?
Familiar Spirit: Ah. That unmistakable color. The soul of Azem.
Familiar Spirit: But not the friend I knew, I think. Nevertheless, you are you.
Familiar Spirit: Hmm... So, Emet-Selch meant for you to have it.
Familiar Spirit: You seem surprised. Why might that be?
Hythlodaeus: Again? I do not believe I have yet had the pleasure.
Hythlodaeus: Emet-Selch created a shade in my likeness? And not only me, but all of Amaurot?
Hythlodaeus: Heh heh... How very like him... Heh heh heh...
Hythlodaeus: A slave to sentiment, even after an eternity.
Hythlodaeus: As you may have guessed, I am different from the shade you met before. No mere approximation, but the original.
Hythlodaeus: A soul sacrificed to Zodiark.
Hythlodaeus: We remember in vivid detail the events leading to our purgatory.
Hythlodaeus: The plans and plots for our resurrection. Hydaelyn's intervention, and Zodiark's─and the star's─final fate.
Hythlodaeus: And then we drifted in a waking dream, our minds steeped in fog...until you came.
Hythlodaeus: I know not what you and your friends intend for Zodiark or the future of the star. Nevertheless...
Hythlodaeus: In you I place my trust and faith. In you I choose to believe, as Emet-Selch did.
Hythlodaeus: Believe in yourself, and all will be well.
Hythlodaeus: Hmm, more new arrivals. Though... Ah. Fandaniel. That color I know.
Hythlodaeus: And another I do not. An unfamiliar but fearsome being...
Hythlodaeus: I have kept you from your duty. By way of apology, I will ensure that the shades hinder you no more.
Hythlodaeus: Protect the final brand.
Hythlodaeus: Fare you well, my new old friend.

* Thanks to your efforts, the Garlean forces have retreated, offering the Alliance a brief reprieve. While discussing the present state of the battle against Garlemald, Yugiri returns from the infirmary with distressing news─the chirurgeons can find no cause for Alisaie's affliction. With five of the Scions now fallen, Raubahn suspects you may be shaken, and exhausted besides. With no further signs of Garlean movement, he bids you rest for the interim.

* You return to the Rising Stones and speak with Hoary Boulder, who is dismayed to hear that Alisaie too has succumbed to the deathless sleep that has taken hold of the others. Though Krile and the other remaining Scions have yet to find a remedy, he believes all hope is not yet lost. For now, however, all you can do is wait.

Dialogue
Starting the Quest
Lyse: I came back to find Doma's advance party ready and waiting for battle. So, as worrying as our little chat with the Emperor was, it did buy enough time for at least some of our allies to arrive.
Lyse: I'm not sure what I was expecting from our meeting with the Emperor, but it wasn't that. Still, at least we know now what he's really after!

Raubahn: Aye, a future built on a mountain of bodies. I too want the Ascians dead─but not at any cost.

Hien: The last of the reinforcements from Doma arrived not long ago. I pray it will be enough. Given the Emperor's stated goal, this is a battle we can ill afford to lose.

Raubahn: If the Garleans come in force, we may not have much say in the matter...even with our combined strength.

Hien: We knew from the first that the odds would be against us. But if there is even the slightest chance of victory, we must do everything in our power to seize it.

Raubahn: We must seize it, full stop.

Hien: Hear, hear!

Raubahn: The two of you are to join an irregular unit and support the main host. I won't bother asking if you're minded to fight.

Alisaie: After coming this far, how could I not?
Alisaie: And for once, there's no one around to countermand me. Not that they would. Not even my brother.
Alisaie: But we all know who'll really make the difference. Ready to frighten some Garleans?

Raubahn: I wouldn't want to be on their side.

Hien: Might I ask you to accompany the Doman contingent? They are strangers here, and your presence would do much to raise their spirits.

Alisaie: We would be honored.

Yugiri: When our people stride out with you in their midst, I daresay the Eorzeans will feel an ilm taller themselves. High spirits have a way of spreading.

Raubahn: Ah, what I wouldn't give to join you. But my duties as field commander will not allow it. I leave the front lines in your capable hands.
Raubahn: Comrades! Ready your arms! The hour of battle has come!
Raubahn: May the Crystal guide us to victory!

Alisaie: Since the others couldn't be here, we'll have to fight twice as hard. If Alphinaud wakes to find the imperials have won, I shall never hear the end of it.
Alisaie: It's strange... I thought I would be terrified when the fighting started.
Alisaie: I should be terrified. But with you at our side, I can't help feeling everything is going to be all right.
Alisaie: So please...
Alisaie: Don't you dare leave me alone.
Alisaie: No matter what happens, we have to survive. Together.
Outside
Raubahn: My duties as field commander demand I remain here at my post, but I have no doubt the front lines are in capable hands.

Resistance Fighter: Greetings, sir/my lady. I have instructions to escort you to Alliance Headquarters─assuming you are ready, of course?

Q1: Accompany the Resistance fighter to Alliance Headquarters?

Hien: Alisaie is being cared for at the infirmary. Would that there were more we could do for her...

Raubahn: So the Garleans have been routed, have they? Well done.
Raubahn: Though this exchange was no more than a test of our strength, like as not. They won't be taking any chances now that the Emperor has joined the fray. They'll want to take their time─whittle down our defenses...
Raubahn: Still, with your help, and that of our Eastern allies, we've passed the first test. Our line is unbroken.
Raubahn: As for Alisaie...well, she's in good hands over at the infirmary.

Yugiri: My lord─the chirurgeons have completed their examination of Mistress Alisaie, and it is as we feared. She is locked in a slumber without any outward cause.

Hien: Just like the others. Damn it all...

Raubahn: Aye...the Garleans picked a fine time to come knocking.
Raubahn: Five Scions incapacitated... And with the enemy on our doorstep, I cannot spare the men to assist in the search for a cure. The best I can do is see to it that Alisaie is escorted safely back to the Rising Stones.

Hien: Yugiri and I would return to our encampment. The main contingent of our forces from the Far East is under sail, and all must be made ready for their arrival.

Raubahn: I'll not keep you, then.
Raubahn: Judging by the Garleans' recent movements, or lack thereof, they won't be launching another offensive in the immediate future.
Raubahn: You should return to the Rising Stones. Given the plight of your fellow Scions, I can understand if you feel on edge, but you'll be no good to anyone without rest.
Raubahn: Go on, now─rest. You've more than earned it. We'll contact you the moment the Garleans show any sign of stirring.

Hoary Boulder: Ah, [Forename]. Welcome home. Word has it you and Mistress Alisaie gave the Garleans quite a thrashing. Speaking of whom, where is Mistress Alisaie? I was certain she would have returned by now.
Hoary Boulder: By the Twelve, not her too...
Hoary Boulder: Ocher and I will ready the infirmary for her arrival.
Hoary Boulder: We will also need to send a message to Tataru posthaste. <sigh> Would that I had something other than grim tidings to share with her...
Hoary Boulder: And with you too, for that matter. It grieves me to report that the Archons' condition remains unchanged.
Hoary Boulder: As we speak, Coultenet, Krile, and Master Matoya continue to explore every possible avenue. Alas, their efforts have yet to bear fruit.
Hoary Boulder: But all is not lost. You are still hale and whole, after all. Though I suspect you must be tired from your journey. You should rest, my friend. Leave the worrying to us, for the time being, at least.
Lyse bids you let her know when you are prepared to attend the parley.

*You attend the first round of parley only to witness Emperor Varis dismantle every argument the Alliance leaders bring against him. Rather than let the opportunity for peace slip away, Alisaie begs the Empire's ruler to consider alternatives to war. The Emperor grudgingly agrees to a short recess, granting you time to convert with your comrades.

*Alisaie suspects Emperor Varis has attended the parley for reasons other than brokering a peace. She suggests you speak with the Alliance leaders, and formulate a strategy for learning the Emperor's true purpose.

*You speak with each of the Alliance leaders in turn, and discuss a number of potential tactics. It is time to report to Alisaie with the insights you have gained.

*The parley reconvenes, and the Alliance leaders at last elicit a blunt answer from Emperor Varis. But the revelation is hardly a welcome one. He explains how the Empire is a creation of the Ascians, and that to reclaim the world for the races of man, all nations must join together as one. The assembled dignitaries balk at his ultimatum-that in order to win their freedom, they must allow the Rejoining to proceed. Unable to countenance a sacrifice of that scale, you, too, add your voice to the chorus of defiance, and the talks rapidly disintegrate. With the Emperor's hostile farewell still ringing in the air, your party withdraws to Alliance Headquarters.

*Though peace was never a likely outcome, it seems the parley was successful in its primary purpose: the delay has allowed the vanguard from Doma time to arrive before hostilities begin in earnest...
Dialogue
Accepting the Quest
Hien: We must leave now to convene with Eorzea’s leaders, and it may be some time before I return to Doma.

Hien: Hakuro – I leave you in command.

Hakuro: My lord!

Yugiri: I shall assemble an advance party with all haste, and join you in Ala Mhigo forthwith.

Alisaie: I’ve just received word from Lyse. The Alliance has established a base camp near Ala Mhigo’s northeastern border.

Alisaie: Once we’ve arrived in the Lochs, we’re to report to a Resistance officer station in Porta Praetoria who will point us in the right direction. Let’s not keep them waiting.

At Porta Praetoria
Resistance Fighter: Ah, you must be the Scion party I was told to look out for! If you'll follow me, I'll take you directly to Alliance Headquarters.

At Alliance Headquarters
Lyse: Welcome back, you two. Greetings, Lord Hien! Glad you could join us!

Hien: Glad to be here. I would have come sooner, were our own defenses not in question. But I am pleased to report that our soldiers are assembling for deployment to Ala Mhigo as we speak.

Raubahn: We are grateful for your support. Thanks to the efforts of our allies, it won't be long before we've established defensive positions on this front as well.

Alisaie: Ahem, we have some good news too... Alphinaud has come back to us. As for the bad news...

Lyse: So, Alphinaud won't wake up, Gaius van Baelsar is alive and hunting Ascians, and the Empire is planning to poison us all with toxic gas. Does that sound about right?

Lyse: Ordinarily, any one of those things would have left me in shock, but the way things have been lately, it's all starting to seem pretty normal.

Lyse: Getting back to your report, are we sure this "Black Rose" is the weapon Maxima was talking about?

Raubahn: It fits the description. And it seems we have Alphinaud to thank for sparing us an early demonstration of its effectiveness. I've a feeling this won't be the last time his bravery in the Empire will serve us here in Eorzea.

Raubahn: The threat of an unknown weapon has had us all on edge... But now that we know what we're dealing with, we can take steps to defend against it.

Raubahn: As for Gaius... I'm not sure what to think. Am I happy he's alive? Not in the slightest. Am I happy he's hunting Ascians? Aye. I'd have to say I am.

Lyse: Oh, speaking of Garleans-you-didn't-expect-to-see, we have a tale of our own, as it happens. When we sent envoys to the imperial army to request talks, they returned with the message that "Varis zos Galvus" would be attending.

Hien: The Emperor himself? Well, Varis did sanction the Populares' peace mission...

Hien: ...But knowing that an Ascian walks in his son's skin, I do not see how we can trust him or anyone from that nest of vipers.

Raubahn: The Alliance would proceed with negotiations regardless, if only to give ourselves more time to prepare. We do, however, require your cooperation...

Lyse: Ah, right, yes... So... as a condition for the talks to go forward, the Empire has requested that a member of the Scions be present. There'll be a representative from each Alliance nation, of course, but I'm afraid we have to ask that you come along too.

Alisaie: Gods, Lyse... you know how much I hate politics. But then what choice do I have? Alphinaud and the others aren't going to do it...

Alisaie: Very well. I shall attend as the Scion's representative.

Lyse: In case you're wondering why I didn't ask you, the Empire also requested the presence of "Eorzea's champion"...

Adventurer: I'll be there. OR I'm not fond of politics either...

Lyse: That's settled, then. We don't know what Varis means to bring to the table, or why he wants you there, but having you close at hand will make all the difference.

Raubahn: The meeting will take place on the border. Anticipating an early assault, we man to position the bulk of our forces nearby.

Lyse: The Alliance leaders should already be on their way. Once you're ready, we can head out and join them.

Speaking to Lyse
Lyse: Well, I don't suppose it's polite to keep an emperor waiting too long. Shall we?

At the Meeting
Varis zos Galvus: Esteemed representatives of the Eorzean Alliance─on behalf of the Garlean Empire, I thank you for inviting me here today.

Varis zos Galvus: As this parley was convened at your request, I invite you to speak first.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Very well, Your Radiance. I, Nanamo Ul Namo, seventeenth in the line of Ul, should be pleased to oblige you.

Nanamo Ul Namo: As recent events in Ala Mhigo and Doma have made plain, the subjugation and exploitation of neighboring nations is not a sustainable policy.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Should this day end in war, you may very well defeat us, but you will never extinguish the people's desire for freedom. Though it may not be in our lifetime, there will be another revolution, another war, and the cycle will continue.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Doma has entered into a concord with the nations of Eorzea. A partnership wherein we recognize one another as equals.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Garlemald could be afforded similar treatment. You need only set aside your ambitions and join us in paving a path towards peace.

Varis zos Galvus: Hmph! You will not win me over with sophistry, Your Grace.

Varis zos Galvus: As you know only too well, this alliance lacks the strength to keep the peace within its own borders. Even now, your struggles with the beastmen continue unabated.

Varis zos Galvus: Divided, you sow this fertile soil with the seeds of your differences and reap naught but discord and chaos for your trouble. Eorzea must be united under one leader, one purpose. I would offer you both and bring an end to your strife.

Lyse: With all due respect, Your Radiance, the only thing that you offered the people of Ala Mhigo was fear and hopelessness.

Hien: The citizens of Doma can also attest to the meager alms of imperial rule. There is no purpose to be found in a life of oppression, each day more uncertain than the last.

Lyse: Our people are willing to die for their freedom. A great many already have. And countless more will, if we don't put an end to this madness here and now.

Varis zos Galvus: We brought order and stability to your lives. This madness and bloodshed is of your own making. You broke the peace, not Garlemald.

Raubahn: Peace? Order? You kill our peoples, despoil our lands, take everything that is ours. And what? You expect us to lick the boot that grinds our faces into the dirt?

Varis zos Galvus: I expect you to weigh the costs. To recognize that countless lives have been lost on both sides in pursuit of a greater good─and to not squander all we have achieved in a fit of petulance.

Aymeric: Your Radiance, I fear I can personally attest to the dangers of pursuing one's vision with such righteous fervor.

Aymeric: For a thousand years, the Holy See of Ishgard waged war with dragons.

Aymeric: A thousand years of sacrifice, of sorrow and hate, in which we bathed in the blood of friend and foe alike. Had it gone on any longer, we may well have drowned.

Aymeric: Yet we have chosen to raise ourselves out of this bloody spiral, and have since made peace with our former enemy.

Varis zos Galvus: So I understand. No doubt the dragons were more receptive to your overtures in the wake of their leader's demise.

Varis zos Galvus: You speak of peace, yet use war to achieve it. Your father would not have bothered to obscure his intent with honeyed words. He understood that strength is all that matters in the end.

Varis zos Galvus: Without his clarity of vision, I can but wonder what will become of Ishgard and her people.

Varis zos Galvus: There was a time when Garlemald too lacked a leader of conviction. Weak and unable to wield magic, we were at the mercy of the strong, from whom we sought refuge in the bitter cold of the north.

Varis zos Galvus: Were it not for the discovery of ceruleum, and the subsequent development of magitek, we might never have gained the power to take back that which was rightfully ours.

Merlwyb: You speak as if your people were the first to have been driven from their homes. Limsa Lominsa was built by wayward souls in search of a place to call their own.

Merlwyb: On the shores of Vylbrand we found it, and from those humble beginnings did we grow and flourish. And all without robbing our neighbors of their liberty.

Varis zos Galvus: So sayeth the pirate. Am I to believe that you simply asked the kobolds to yield up their lands, and that they were happy to oblige you? That you did not drive them out like rats in the hold of one of the many ships seized by your “privateers”?

Varis zos Galvus: I will concede that, after centuries of exile, reclamation may be mistaken for invasion. Nevertheless, it is not─and those who till stolen soil have no right to object when cast out in turn.

Kan-E-Senna: Your uncompromising nature rivals that of the Ixal.

Kan-E-Senna: They too lament circumstances which they themselves perpetuate. Were they but to embrace peace, we would welcome them with open arms. Indeed, some few have done just that, and now receive of the Twelveswood's bounty.

Kan-E-Senna: Would that your people might learn from their example.

Varis zos Galvus: You would dare compare us to the birdmen? You who thought to invoke the Twelve and threaten all of creation?

Varis zos Galvus: I came here in the hope of finding some speck of common ground, but I see now these discussions will accomplish nothing.

Varis zos Galvus: Despite what you people may believe, I am not wont to choose the sword over the olive branch. 'Tis but a pity men are loath to accept one without first being shown the other.

Alisaie: Wait, I beg you! This meeting was supposed to be a chance to find a way forward together, not to bemoan the missteps which brought us here.

Alisaie: Please─if you truly consider violence a last resort, there must be a way we can come to an agreement.

Nanamo Ul Namo: As Mistress Alisaie says, we did not come here to bicker over the past, but to discuss how we might strive towards a brighter future.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Emperor Varis, may I suggest a short recess, that all present might compose themselves prior to beginning anew?

Varis zos Galvus: Very well. I pray this intermission will suffice to move these talks in a more constructive direction

After the Intermission
Varis zos Galvus: Now then. Who would have the floor?

Nanamo Ul Namo: Before we resume, I wish to offer you an apology. After you graciously accepted our invitation to discuss an armistice, we have done naught but rebuke you at every opportunity. I believe I speak for all of us when I say we are deeply sorry for our discourtesy.

Merlwyb: I'll admit, your familiarity with our affairs surprised me─and served to remind me how little I know of yours.

Raubahn: I think all here can understand the desire to reclaim one's homeland. But why expand further─that is my question.

Hien: If I may─the answer can be found in the imperial doctrine they took great pains to impart to my people.

Hien: Recognizing the threat eikons pose to the world, Solus zos Galvus decreed that they were to be eradicated. To this end, he began a campaign to unite all lands under the Garlean banner.

Hien: Or so we were taught. Yet the Emperor only reached the Burn─the barrens said to have been laid waste by eikons─after conquering all the lands that lay between. What is more, I am quite certain the practice of summoning was not nearly so widespread in the days before the Empire's founding.

Lyse: When you put it like that, it all starts to sound like an excuse, doesn't it? But to distract from what? Why are you really waging this war?

Varis zos Galvus: ...Finally, you ask the right question.

Varis zos Galvus: I can but hope you heed mine answer and at last accept the righteousness of our cause.

Varis zos Galvus: My goal is this: to return the world to the way it once was. The way it was always meant to be.

Varis zos Galvus: In doing so, mankind will be made whole once more.

Varis zos Galvus: No longer will we suffer from the dissension born of our differences.

Varis zos Galvus: There will be but one race─a perfect race─as we were when time began.

Lyse: What in Rhalgr's name are you talking about?

Varis zos Galvus: I am talking about the origins of this star. Of the Source, and its thirteen reflections.

Varis zos Galvus: At the instant of the great sundering, 'twas not only the world that was shattered, but mankind itself. Thus were we divided into myriad races, each with its own unique imperfections.

Varis zos Galvus: That is why man looks upon his neighbor and feels fear and hatred. Why he wages war. Why he kills his brother.

Varis zos Galvus: You all in your own way have proven as much today. The peace you seek is but a fleeting solution to a fundamental problem. One which calls for more drastic measures.

Varis zos Galvus: To bring about everlasting peace, our worlds must be rejoined.

Varis zos Galvus: That is the goal the Empire would see realized─the glorious future unto which we shall one day shepherd mankind.

Merlwyb: A rejoining of worlds...?

Kan-E-Senna: I have heard this tale of the Source and its reflections before...

Nanamo Ul Namo: Are these not the selfsame desires as the Ascians?

Aymeric: Emperor Varis! Do not trust in their words. They will lead you to your doom.

Aymeric: My father thought to use them, but in the end he succumbed to their temptations. He embraced summoning like so many other pawns before him. Do not tell us you mean to do the same!

Varis zos Galvus: To be a pawn, free from the burden of choice, would be a blessing...

Varis zos Galvus: But I foreswore that privilege the day I learned that the Garlean Empire was built by the hand of an Ascian.

Alisaie: What!?

Varis zos Galvus: Yes. My grandsire, the former emperor, is of their number. And who better to build an empire capable of bringing about the calamitous change we desire?

Varis zos Galvus: Would you condemn me for this alliance, for bowing to the will of these shadowy masters, when the prize is true and lasting peace?

Varis zos Galvus: I come not to conquer, but to liberate─to free man from the prison of divergence.

Varis zos Galvus: Imagine a world united. One perfect race beneath a single standard.

Varis zos Galvus: An army before whose might these servants of Darkness and Light would fly as leaves in a storm, never again to meddle in man's affairs.

Varis zos Galvus: We would be the masters of our own fate!

Varis zos Galvus: I bid you join me! Not as subjects of Garlemald, but of a new nation! And together we shall win freedom for ourselves and generations yet unborn!

Lyse: You want to trigger another half-dozen calamities? You can't be serious!

Raubahn: Have you forgotten how many died? There will be no one left!

Merlwyb: Do you truly imagine we would aid you in your bloodletting?

Kan-E-Senna: It is unthinkable! Unconscionable!

Varis zos Galvus: And what is the alternative? To be as cattle waiting for slaughter. I would have us work together, that we might take fate into our own hands.

Alisaie: Into your hands, perhaps...

Alisaie: But what of the other worlds, Your Radiance? With every calamity, you obliterate a star and every soul that dwells on it!

Varis zos Galvus: To the Ascians, we are all but tiny, momentary specks within an indifferent universe. We cannot hope to oppose them until we have been made whole once more.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Are these truly the words of Garlemald's ruler?

Nanamo Ul Namo: The flaws and foibles which you so abhor are what make us who we are. Every nation─even yours, Emperor Varis─is made whole through the combination of these imperfections, the strengths of one compensating for the weaknesses of another.

Nanamo Ul Namo: While it is true that man succumbs all too often to anger and avarice, he may yet overcome his baser instincts through the forming of bonds with others, fostering community and cooperation.

Nanamo Ul Namo: That the protector of an empire should not only reject these fundamental truths, but seek to change them at so dear a cost to life is indefensible.

Nanamo Ul Namo: Such a man is not fit to govern.

Varis zos Galvus: And you, Warrior of Light? Would you refuse me as well?

Nanamo Ul Namo: It would seem the Alliance is of one mind on this matter.

Varis zos Galvus: You Eorzeans never cease to disappoint me.

Varis zos Galvus: Though I suppose I have only myself to blame for expecting more from savages.

Varis zos Galvus: This discussion is at an end. I bid you make ready for our next meeting. It will not be at the negotiating table.

Steps
* Speak with the Resistance fighter in Porta Praetoria.
* Speak with Lyse.
* Speak with Alisaie.
* Speak with Alliance leaders. 0/3
* Report to Alisaie.
* Speak with Lyse.

Journal
*Hien gives orders in preparation for his departure to Ala Mhigo, and Alisaie shares the instructions she received from Lyse. You are to head to Porta Praetoria, where a Resistance fighter will escort you to Alliance Headquarters on Ala Mhigo's northeastern border.

*You locate the Resistance fighter ordered to await your arrival in the Lochs. Without further ado, you follow your guide to the Alliance's newly constructed field camp.

*After listening to your various reports concerning Alphinaud, Gaius, and the lethal Black Rose, Lyse shares her own piece of news: it seems that Emperor Varis himself will be taking a chair at the negotiation table on the condition that you and another member of the Scions are present.

Steps
* Speak with the Resistance fighter in Porta Praetoria.
* Speak with Lyse.
* Speak with Alisaie.
* Speak with Alliance leaders. 0/3
* Report to Alisaie.
* Speak with Lyse.

Varis zos Galvus: Esteemed representatives of the Eorzean Alliance─on behalf of the Garlean Empire, I thank you for inviting me here today.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: As this parley was convened at your request, I invite you to speak first.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: Very well, Your Radiance. I, Nanamo Ul Namo, seventeenth in the line of Ul, should be pleased to oblige you.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: As recent events in Ala Mhigo and Doma have made plain, the subjugation and exploitation of neighboring nations is not a sustainable policy.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: Should this day end in war, you may very well defeat us, but you will never extinguish the people's desire for freedom. Though it may not be in our lifetime, there will be another revolution, another war, and the cycle will continue.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: Doma has entered into a concord with the nations of Eorzea. A partnership wherein we recognize one another as equals.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: Garlemald could be afforded similar treatment. You need only set aside your ambitions and join us in paving a path towards peace.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: Hmph! You will not win me over with sophistry, Your Grace.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: As you know only too well, this alliance lacks the strength to keep the peace within its own borders. Even now, your struggles with the beastmen continue unabated.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: Divided, you sow this fertile soil with the seeds of your differences and reap naught but discord and chaos for your trouble. Eorzea must be united under one leader, one purpose. I would offer you both and bring an end to your strife.<br>
Lyse: With all due respect, Your Radiance, the only thing that you offered the people of Ala Mhigo was fear and hopelessness.<br>
Hien: The citizens of Doma can also attest to the meager alms of imperial rule. There is no purpose to be found in a life of oppression, each day more uncertain than the last.<br>
Lyse: Our people are willing to die for their freedom. A great many already have. And countless more will, if we don't put an end to this madness here and now.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: We brought order and stability to your lives. This madness and bloodshed is of your own making. You broke the peace, not Garlemald.<br>
Raubahn: Peace? Order? You kill our peoples, despoil our lands, take everything that is ours. And what? You expect us to lick the boot that grinds our faces into the dirt?<br>
Varis zos Galvus: I expect you to weigh the costs. To recognize that countless lives have been lost on both sides in pursuit of a greater good─and to not squander all we have achieved in a fit of petulance.<br>
Aymeric: Your Radiance, I fear I can personally attest to the dangers of pursuing one's vision with such righteous fervor.<br>
Aymeric: For a thousand years, the Holy See of Ishgard waged war with dragons.<br>
Aymeric: A thousand years of sacrifice, of sorrow and hate, in which we bathed in the blood of friend and foe alike. Had it gone on any longer, we may well have drowned.<br>
Aymeric: Yet we have chosen to raise ourselves out of this bloody spiral, and have since made peace with our former enemy.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: So I understand. No doubt the dragons were more receptive to your overtures in the wake of their leader's demise.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: You speak of peace, yet use war to achieve it. Your father would not have bothered to obscure his intent with honeyed words. He understood that strength is all that matters in the end.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: Without his clarity of vision, I can but wonder what will become of Ishgard and her people.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: There was a time when Garlemald too lacked a leader of conviction. Weak and unable to wield magic, we were at the mercy of the strong, from whom we sought refuge in the bitter cold of the north.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: Were it not for the discovery of ceruleum, and the subsequent development of magitek, we might never have gained the power to take back that which was rightfully ours.<br>
Merlwyb: You speak as if your people were the first to have been driven from their homes. Limsa Lominsa was built by wayward souls in search of a place to call their own.<br>
Merlwyb: On the shores of Vylbrand we found it, and from those humble beginnings did we grow and flourish. And all without robbing our neighbors of their liberty.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: So sayeth the pirate. Am I to believe that you simply asked the kobolds to yield up their lands, and that they were happy to oblige you? That you did not drive them out like rats in the hold of one of the many ships seized by your “privateers”?<br>
Varis zos Galvus: I will concede that, after centuries of exile, reclamation may be mistaken for invasion. Nevertheless, it is not─and those who till stolen soil have no right to object when cast out in turn.<br>
Kan-E-Senna: Your uncompromising nature rivals that of the Ixal.<br>
Kan-E-Senna: They too lament circumstances which they themselves perpetuate. Were they but to embrace peace, we would welcome them with open arms. Indeed, some few have done just that, and now receive of the Twelveswood's bounty.<br>
Kan-E-Senna: Would that your people might learn from their example.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: You would dare compare us to the birdmen? You who thought to invoke the Twelve and threaten all of creation?<br>
Varis zos Galvus: I came here in the hope of finding some speck of common ground, but I see now these discussions will accomplish nothing.<br>
Varis zos Galvus: Despite what you people may believe, I am not wont to choose the sword over the olive branch. 'Tis but a pity men are loath to accept one without first being shown the other.<br>
Alisaie: Wait, I beg you! This meeting was supposed to be a chance to find a way forward together, not to bemoan the missteps which brought us here.<br>
Alisaie: Please─if you truly consider violence a last resort, there must be a way we can come to an agreement.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: As Mistress Alisaie says, we did not come here to bicker over the past, but to discuss how we might strive towards a brighter future.<br>
Nanamo Ul Namo: Emperor Varis, may I suggest a short recess, that all present might compose themselves prior to beginning anew?<br>
Varis zos Galvus: Very well. I pray this intermission will suffice to move these talks in a more constructive direction<br>

Solo Duty Walkthrough
*First phase: Advance forward on your mount until you encounter enemies, and then dismount. Dispatch the enemy that targets you and any others until Gosetsu volunteers to stay behind. Advance forward again with the rest of your allies, and repeat with Lyse staying this time. Advance forward again and defeat enemies, and finally attempt to capture the ovoo until you are stopped.

*Second phase: You must defeat Magnai and any lesser soldiers that target you. At the same time, you must defend the ovoo from his tribe until he is defeated. Perform any quick attack or skill on enemies attempting to capture the ovoo and they will stop, but target you. Sadu will eventually join the fight, and you must defeat her as well while defending the ovoo against her tribe. Sadu will eventually begin casting a skill causing two Stellar Chuluu to appear. Eliminate both quickly or face a wipe.

*Third phase: Focus on lowering Grynewaht's health until Sadu performs her special skill. Defend the Stellar Chuluus from the imperial forces to lessen their damage, and Sadu will end the duty.

Notes
Completion of this quest unlocks an increase to mount speed in The Azim Steppe.

Steps
*Speak with the Mol warriors. 0/4
*Speak with Temulun.
*Speak with Cirina.
*Race to the ovoo.
*Claim the ovoo for the Mol.
*Defeat Magnai the Older and hold back the Oronir.
*Claim the ovoo for the Mol.
*Defeat the imperial forces.
*Defend the Stellar Chuluu.
*Speak with Hien.

Journal
*The ceremonial battle for rulership over the Steppe, or Naadam, will commence with the rising of the sun, when the Gharl scatter the sacred soil, giving rise to a great ovoo. All will then converge upon this light, and the tribe which claims it will carry the day. Though you and your comrades are ready, Temulun Khatun tells you that some of the Mol warriors are not. Young and inexperienced in the ways of war, they would benefit from some encouragement from a veteran such as you.

*Not all were made for war, and many of the Mol would sooner lay down their arms and tend to their herds. Nevertheless, their eyes burn with renewed purpose after you walk among them dispensing words of wisdom. Temulun Khatun will surely be pleased.

*On the eve of the Naadam, the great and wise leader of the Mol addresses you and your comrades one final time, reminding you of the simple truth that violence lies at the heart of every Xaela -- of every warrior of the Steppe. Delight not in such things, but do not deny them. Face yourself and your enemies without fear, and may the gods guide you to victory.

*You and your comrades race across the Steppe to meet the other tribes in battle, and soon the soil of one and all is awash with Xaela blood. Yet somehow, from that crimson tempest emerges a victor. As the ovoo evaporates into motes of fading light, you stand a khagan crowned.

*There is no time to celebrate the Mol's triumph in the Naadam, for Grynewaht suddenly appears at the head of an imperial squadron, and declares his intention to kill you once and for all. Yet in coming a moment too late, he faces a Steppe united. With the aid of the Oronir and the Dotharl, you slay the invaders and send Grynewaht on his way once more. But this is only the beginning of your alliance, for Hien succeeds in convincing the two tribes to travel south with him and fight for Doma's liberation.

*Two battles won in a single day is reason to rejoice under any circumstances, but these carry special significance. By your deeds are Lord Hien and the Doman Liberation Front one step closer to freeing their home from the yoke of imperial oppression.

Dialogue
Accepting the quest:
Yugiri: ...<br>
Yugiri: Apologies, [Forename]. I was...lost in thought.<br>
Yugiri: Mayhap they have the right of it. Mayhap we are fools for urging them to rise once more. Yet I believe─I have to believe─that in their heart of hearts, they...they still...<br>
Yugiri: ...Now is not the time. We must finish what we started.<br>
Yugiri: I have in my possession a powerful medicine that befuddles the mind and memories. We must administer it to the soldiers ere they wake.<br>
Yugiri: The medicine will leave the soldiers confused and unable to clearly recall recent events. They will suspect that they fell asleep at their posts and be reluctant to discuss it with others.<br>
Yugiri: It is naught more than a temporary measure, but we dare not kill them for the sake of the villagers. Tend to the last two I put to sleep─I shall see to the others.

<br>Using Yugiri's medicine on the imperial decurion:
Imperial Decurion: <snore> ...Mother, is that you...?

<br>Using Yugiri's medicine on the imperial soldier:
Imperial Soldier: I...I want to go home... <snore>

<br>Searching for Yugiri:
Yugiri: Forgive me for making you search.<br>
Yugiri: It calms me, the sound. It helps me to remember the sway of the ocean when I close my eyes...<br>
Yugiri: Despite the many great and noble things I said, in truth I am not of Doma. I was born beneath the waves of the Ruby Sea...<br>
Yugiri: To think that you were there─that you even spoke with my mother and father...<br>
Yugiri: They are in good health, then. The knowledge is...of great comfort to me.<br>
Yugiri: That I might have the strength to protect my home from the Empire, I left to learn the secrets of the shinobi. Day and night we trained, ever striving to exceed our mental and physical limits.<br>
Yugiri: After a time, my skills were recognized, and I was dispatched to assist the Doman Liberation Front. It was then that I met Lord Kaien and his son, and their loyal samurai, Gosetsu.<br>
Yugiri: Good men, all. Brave and true, so clear their eyes, so pure their purpose. Any shinobi would have been proud to serve them and Doma.<br>
Yugiri: ...But, in the end, I will always be of the sea.<br>
Yugiri: Every day, I pray for my home, and for the people I left behind. That they might be spared the wages of war, and live in peace, untouched by this madness.<br>
Yugiri: I confessed this to Lord Hien once. Do you know what he said to me?<br>
Yugiri: He said: "Good. We are better for the conviction of our allies, and draw inspiration from their example. What is weak alone may together grow stronger."<br>
Yugiri: Never did I lose faith in them. Even when all was lost, and I led our people to Eorzea, I clung to the belief that our dream would one day be realized.<br>
Yugiri: But when I gazed into those eyes bereft of hope─when those broken men balked at liberty, the dream was shattered.

Q: What will you say?<br>
A1: Together we are strong, and we must carry on.
Yugiri: That you remain resolute, even in the face of everything we have seen... It heartens me more than you know. Thank you for standing by this naive fool.<br>
A2: It will not always be so.
Yugiri: So I pray... And thus do I labor to see a new day dawn, regardless of my misgivings. When all is said and done, we can but carry on─together.<br>
A3: ...
Yugiri: Forgive me, we shinobi are taught to discharge our duties without hesitation or doubt. Come what may, I shall not falter.

Yugiri: An imperial airship...<br>
Yugiri: It is bound for Doma Castle. Quickly, we must rejoin the others!

<br>Returning with Yugiri to the House of the Fierce:
Yugiri: Come, come! We must tell the others of this airship, or hear what they know of it!

Lyse: There you are! What happened? Are the villagers all right?<br>
Yugiri: W-We freed them, along with many others.<br>
Yugiri: Gosetsu─we spied an airship bound for the castle. Know you aught of it?<br>
Gosetsu: Aye, that we do... The crown prince is come to Doma.<br>
Alisaie: We suspect this is the result of recent events in Gyr Abania. Our defeat notwithstanding, there appears to be some concern in Garlemald that subversive elements may be rallying in other provinces.<br>
Alisaie: Though Yotsuyu governs Doma, Zenos remains the province's anointed viceroy─and it would seem he has come to assess the current situation in person.<br>
Yugiri: If Zenos is here, we must seize this opportunity and kill him.<br>
Alisaie: Would that it were so simple, Lady Yugiri. You may recall that we encountered Zenos at Rhalgr's Reach. We have seen firsthand what he can do. His power defies explanation.<br>
Alisaie: He faced the Alliance, the Resistance and the Scions, and he defeated us all.<br>
Alisaie: We survived and learned from the experience, it is true─but if we are to defeat him, it will not be through simple opportunism. We will require a flawless plan.<br>
Yugiri: We know his strengths. A prodigious swordsman trained from childhood by the finest imperial tutors, reputed to be without equal on the battlefield. Which is why we must not meet him there.<br>
Yugiri: Nay, we keep to the shadows─the domain of the shinobi. And thence we strike. You need only give me the chance.<br>
Gosetsu: Were this but a matter of personal revenge, I would not presume to bar your path, for I myself crave that same vengeance.<br>
Gosetsu: But to draw steel against the Emperor's son is a grave decision, and one that will shape our nation's future. Do not forget Lord Hien's words!<br>
Yugiri: What, that we should sheathe our swords if the people lack the will to fight!? I will not squander this opportunity! If we do naught, our master's life is forfeit!<br>
Gosetsu: Even should you succeed, Zenos's death will not win Doma her freedom─more likely her doom.<br>
Dialogue
Accepting the quest:
Yugiri: Now then, I should be glad to discuss our next course of action─<br>
Yugiri: Though now that I think on it, I myself have been away from Doma for some time, and even after my return, the search for Lord Hien commanded my full attention...<br>
Yugiri: Mayhap it would be to both our benefit if we were to see the reality of Doma for ourselves. For did my lord not bid me learn the truth of her heart?<br>
Yugiri: Let us do this together, [Forename]. Let us go among the people and with our own eyes bear witness to their hardship.<br>
Yugiri: As a foreigner in these lands, your reputation does not precede you. Moreover, unlike Gosetsu, I can accompany you without attracting unwanted attention.<br>
Lyse: I'd like to join you, if that's all right.<br>
Yugiri: By all means. We should be glad of your company, and your perspective.<br>
Yugiri: Namai is not far. I say we begin there.

<br>Speaking with Yugiri at Namai Village:
Yugiri: Ah, [Forename]. I am glad to see that you too put thought into your garments given the covert nature of our activities.<br>
Yugiri: Hm? I should think my reasons obvious. To enter the village while wearing the garb of the shinobi would be beyond reckless.<br>
Yugiri: We shall pose as traveling merchants─[Forename] as our leader, and we as [his/her] assistants. Are there any objections?<br>
Lyse: I'm not really the merchant type, but if you think this is the best way to go about it, I'll trust you.<br>
Yugiri: Then without further ado, let us begin.

<br>Gathering information in Namai Village:
Honami: It warms my heart to see traveling merchants in Namai again. Though the imperials never sealed our borders, folks like you have taken to avoiding Yanxia ever since the rebellion.<br>
Honami: Unfortunately, that has only made it harder for us to survive. You may have noticed, but we lack for a great many things. It was not much better before, true, but it has only gotten worse...

Miyama: Foreign peddlers? In Namai? Whatever it is you sell, I have no money to buy. Perhaps you should go elsewhere.<br>
Miyama: Saying that, I know of no village in Yanxia that has fared any better. Once, I would have directed you to the samurai lords of Monzen─had they not all died in battle or in the purges.<br>
Miyama: There is the Doman Enclave, of course, but that lies beyond the Dairyu Moon Gates. Needless to say, the imperials are disinclined to let any but their own pass

Masatsuchi: A traveling merchant? With meat, perchance? Bah, better not to know when I have so little coin.<br>
Masatsuchi: ...I feel your eyes upon me. You know not the Lupin? Surely you have not been long in Yanxia, else you would.<br>
Masatsuchi: For generations we served the lords of Doma, compassionate and wise as they were...but the memories of such times fade with every passing day. As others will tell you.

Chigusa: You? A merchant? Forgive me my skepticism, but you strike me less a woman of commerce and more a common sellsword.<br>
Q: What will you say?<br>
A1: Give your best impression of Hancock.1
Chigusa: That does little to assuage my doubts, and if anything makes me clutch my coinpurse tighter...<br>
A2: Give your best smile.
Chigusa: I stand corrected! Such a warm and cordial nature you possess. I pray you forgive me my earlier rudeness.
Chigusa: It has been some time since the viceroy came to our village to purge it of insurgents. Those who resisted suffered terribly, and those who did not fared little better.
Chigusa: We who remain know better than to risk her ire. If the imperials demand laborers, we comply. If they demand conscripts to send as soldiers to other provinces, we obey.
Chigusa: Ours is a difficult life, with little in the way of luxuries. I know not what you sell, merchant, but I doubt that I─nor anyone else here─can afford it.
1Choosing this exits the prompt and allows you to pick again.<br>

<br>Speaking with Yugiri:
Yugiri: [Forename]. What have you learned?<br>
Yugiri: Lyse and I encountered much of the same. They have been pushed beyond the brink.<br>
Yugiri: I expected frustration and disillusionment, but not so much that they would come to question the wisdom of opposing imperial rule in the first place...<br>
Yugiri: Unless we can convince them otherwise, I fear I cannot convince Lord Hien to return, and without him...

Dialogue
Gosetsu: Let no man claim that I am reckless. Prudence has ever been my watchword! " "─venture closer, if you would, and confirm that there are no soldiers lurking about.

Alisaie: We may be in luck. I don't see a single imperial soldier.

Gosetsu: Then there is no need to remain hidden. Let us go and greet them as friends.

Lyse: I'm going too!

Gosetsu: Good people of Namai, hearken to me! We come in peace and desire only information─to learn of recent events!

Namai Farmwife: Isn't that the general?

Namai Farmhand: Lord Gosetsu!? Kami preserve, you're right! He lives!

Gosetsu: I say, brothers and sisters, is aught amiss? Why do you regard me as one would a wild beast? Why is there fear in your eyes? Why do you tremble so?

Gosetsu: Ahhh, but of course! You fear me a vengeful spirit of the dead! Rest assured, naught could be further from the truth. For am I not corporeal? Are my feet not firmly set upon the ground? Hah hah!

Namai Farmwife: What should we do? If they catch him here, you know what will happen...

Namai Farmhand: Of all the times for him to turn up─ Has the old fool lost his mind?

Flustered Youth: You! But... Why have you come here? What do you want from us?

Gosetsu: I know not who you are to speak thus to your elders, boy, but mine only desire is to be received with the hospitality owed a humble traveler─not the fear and trepidation one might afford a wrathful shade!

Flustered Youth: What? What are you going on about? Actually, never mind.
Just come with me─now!

Namai Youth: I don't know who you people think you are, but do you have any idea what would happen to us if you were found in our village!?

Gosetsu: Again you address us with unwarranted spite! I have let your impropriety pass until now, but no longer!

Gosetsu: Who are you, boy, to speak to me thus? Know you not who I am?

Isse: I am Isse of Namai─a farmer, like my father before me, and his father before him. I wouldn't expect a man like you to know who I am─but I know you. We all do!

Isse: Lord Kaien's retainer and leader of the rebellion─Gosetsu! Notorious fugitive, wanted dead or alive by the Empire!

Gosetsu: Hah hah hah hah hah! Is that what this is all about?

Gosetsu: I am hardly the first man to earn the ire of the Empire. Nor will I be the last.

Gosetsu: Was not Namai home to brave and true warriors, who fought beneath our banners for king and country?

Isse: They fought, and they died. Every last one. And then the imperials came looking for more. Because of them.

Isse: They were this close to killing us all─to burning our village to the ground. We've only just begun to enjoy some semblance of peace...

Isse: Never again─never again, do you understand!? We've had enough of you and yours! Whatever it is you're plotting, leave us out of it!

Gosetsu: ...Hmm. Impassioned as his pleas may be, surely he must know that I cannot leave things as they are.

Gosetsu: But for now, I shall respect his wishes. We must continue on towards our final destination─the House of the Fierce. Proud headquarters of the Doman Liberation Front.

Gosetsu: There is a secret entrance to the north of Namai, by way of a small spring. Come─I will show you!

Gosetsu: This way, this way! We must dive into the water!

Gosetsu: Have no fear, " "! It is but a short distance. You need not hold your breath for long!

Gosetsu: <pant> <pant> Hah hah hah! How invigorating!

Gosetsu: Congratulations, my friends! You are come to the House of the Fierce!

*Owing to the timely intervention of Confederate forces, Yotsuyu and her imperials have been driven from Isari, and their former captives managed to survive their ordeal. Despite his assurances, Gosetsu is clearly still troubled by the injuries he sustained from Grynewaht's brutal interrogation. Nevertheless, you decide to carry on and resume your journey to Yanxia.

*Life. Liberty. Hope. All this and more have the Garleans tried to take from the Domans. Everywhere you look you are confronted by evidence of the failed rebellion and the vicious reprisals which followed. Yet the imperial soldiers are conspicuous by their absence...

*Zenos had no desire to remain in Doma after he crushed the rebellion, and so he named Yotsuyu to serve in his stead. The acting viceroy waged an indiscriminate campaign of terror, marching into villages without warning and committing unspeakable atrocities in the name of rooting out “radical elements.” After a time, these purges ceased, but the memory remains, and with it the promise of punishment should the people resist. And so there is little need for imperial patrols.

*Gosetsu leads you to Namai, a humble farming village a little ways to the west. Yet even though you see no signs of imperial soldiers, it would be exceedingly reckless to simply saunter into the village...
Dialogue
Accepting the quest:
Gosetsu: You did well, [Forename]. Were it not for the tremendous strength and bravery of you and yours, many innocent souls would have suffered terrible fates.<br>
Gosetsu: Though I knew the Confederacy would be loath to meet the imperials in battle, I also knew that if any could win them over, it would be you.<br>
Gosetsu: Truly, yours is a heroic spirit that inspires men to rise above their circumstances─to strive for something greater! It will be an honor to travel with you again.<br>
Gosetsu: Now then, let us not squander the Confederacy's gift. Yanxia and my countrymen await!<br>
Gosetsu: There is a tunnel to the southwest. We need but follow it to reach our destination. With me!

<br>Upon travelling to Yanxia:
Red Marine Commander: We cannot rest here for long. This place is not safe...<br>
Red Marine Commander: ...Mayhap nowhere is, if thieves can breach our vaults. Nevertheless, it is our duty to protect these treasures, and we shall not fail for want of effort.<br>
Yotsuyu: So this is why you abandoned your posts─and without a word of explanation at that. Rather thoughtless of you, was it not?<br>
Red Marine Commander: Lady Yotsuyu! Pray forgive us our absence, but our home was under attack─our vaults plundered by outsiders!<br>
Yotsuyu: Did you even pause to consider the possibility that it might be a diversion? What is the point of contracting your services if you are not here when they are required?<br>
Yotsuyu: It is my solemn charge to bring these vermin to heel─to torment them, body and soul, until all they hold dear is as bitter ashes in their mouths. And then you go and ruin everything!<br>
Yotsuyu: ...Well, there's naught to be gained in belaboring the point. All that remains is to administer your punishment.<br>
Red Marine Commander: Wait! My Lady!<br>
Yotsuyu: No...no, it's no good. There's just no joy in it. No release.<br>
Yotsuyu: There...there needs to be some investment. They were negligent imbeciles deserving of punishment, but it was hardly personal. Ten thousand such Kojin could not satisfy me half so well as a single Doman.<br>
Yotsuyu: And what do we have here? One of the vaunted treasures of the Red? The craftsmanship is certainly impressive... Mayhap we can use it to make amends.<br>
Grynewaht: How long before Lord Zenos reinstates me, d'you reckon? I've got unfinished business back in Eorzea...<br>
Yotsuyu: Is serving me really so unbearable? At least pretend to enjoy it, you witless lump!<br>
Yotsuyu: If you are so desperate to earn a way back to Eorzea, then be quiet and do as you're told. And bring that sword while you're at it!

Lyse (narrating): I remember the silence. How the talking stopped when we first set foot on the plains of Yanxia.<br>
Lyse (narrating): Before us stood yet another wall, and through a great magitek field we glimpsed Doma Castle.<br>
Lyse (narrating): I'll never forget the sight...or the anger I felt that day.<br>
Lyse (narrating): Life. Liberty. Hope. So much lost, so much taken.<br>
Lyse (narrating): As we walked through that war-torn land, no one said a word...

<br>Speaking with Gosetsu:
Gosetsu: Hmm... Yes, this is far enough.<br>
Gosetsu: Ere we proceed further, I should speak of Yanxia and what became of her. Of what lies beyond that great wall at the heart of Doma.<br>
Alisaie: And we should be glad to hear it, but is it wise for us to have this conversation here, on the road, out in the open?<br>
Gosetsu: Once, your caution would be warranted...but no longer.<br>
Gosetsu: Zenos did not linger after he crushed the rebellion. He appointed Yotsuyu to act in his stead and quit these lands for “fresh sport.”<br>
Gosetsu: The acting viceroy was no less merciless than her master. Without warning, her men would march into villages and search for “radical elements,” killing and torturing any who dared resist. And then, as quickly as they had come, they left.<br>
Gosetsu: Satisfied that the memory of the purges would keep the people in line, she relaxed her grip on Yanxia. What need for the leash when the dog is broken...<br>
Gosetsu: The village of Namai lies to the west. Though I doubt the imperials are present, let us proceed with caution.

<br>Speaking with Gosetsu again:
Gosetsu: There she is─the humble village of Namai! How delicious her rice; how sweet her persimmons!<br>
Gosetsu: Too long has it been since I saw her with my own eyes. And, for a mercy, the imperials appear to be absent...
