==Steps==
*Deliver [[Widargelt]]'s challenge to [[Theobald]] at [[Rustrock]].
*Speak with Widargelt at [[Schism]].
*Speak with [[Hamon]].
*Speak with [[O'tchakha]].
*Speak with [[Erik]].
*Speak with Widargelt.
*Defeat the enemy!

==Journal==
*Widargelt's jaw is set in a look of resolve.

*With Erik having recovered from his injuries, Widargelt is now ready to issue his challenge to Theobald. To avoid the risk of premature bloodshed, you have been tasked with bearing the letter to his opponent, who has made Rustrock his hideout.

*You present the letter of challenge to Theobald, and he haughtily accepts. Take word to Widargelt at Schism.

*Theobald arrives at the prescribed hour, and he and Widargelt square off before the gathered villagers. But before fists fly, it is revealed that Theobald is in fact Adri, Widargelt's dear comrade from his time at the Temple of the Fist. Made to feel powerless due to his low birth, he resents Widargelt for spurning his royal blood and the might it represents. Once the talking ends and they engage, it becomes clear that Widargelt has the upper hand, and Adri summons his minions to his aid and resorts to using imperial weaponry. For a blessing, Hamon appears with Chuchuto and Rurukuta, having been informed of the duel, and they join the fray to even the odds. At the end of a long struggle, you and yours emerge triumphant.

*To a cheering crowd, Widargelt renews his promise to revive the Fist of Rhalgr. As the dust settles, speak with your comrades to hear their thoughts on the conclusion of events.

*Praising Widargelt for his heartfelt speech, Hamon heads back to Ul'dah with his two pupils in tow. D'zentsa and O'tchakha, meanwhile, reaffirm their resolve to grow stronger, that they might better support their master in his endeavors. Last but not least, Erik expresses his gratitude for the role you played in helping Widargelt to forge on in the face of adversity. With the others having taken their leave, you may now give your undivided attention to your brother monk.

*Widargelt reflects upon all the lessons he has learned, and bids you farewell as he resumes his mission to revive the Fist of Rhalgr. Till next your paths cross, continue to help others as you have helped him.
**※The next monk quest will be available from Erik once you have met the following requirements:
**※ You must have registered a product key for FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers to your service account.
**※ You must have completed the main scenario quest “[[Shadowbringers (Quest)|Shadowbringers]].”
**※ You must have completed the role quest “[[Courage Born of Fear]].”
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
Widargelt: The professor is well again. The time is come. I will issue Theobald my challenge.
Widargelt: He and his minions use Rustrock as their hideout. But who should bear the letter there?

Question: Who should deliver the letter of challenge?

> I will go.

Widargelt: You, {{alternatives|f=sister|m=brother}}? Is this wise? What if they set upon you again? No, better that I go.

> You should go.

Widargelt: You are right, {{alternatives|f=sister|m=brother}}. It is fitting that I go.

---

O'tchakha: Master, wait. If you deliver the letter, it will most certainly end in blood. [Forename] should go.

D'zentsa: Without a hostage, they can't pull no dirty tricks. They wouldn't dare try [Forename] again.

Widargelt: Very well. I entrust this letter to you. Take it to Rustrock. And see it to Theobald's hands.

-optional start

D'zentsa: We'll get them back, and we'll get them good!

O'tchakha: Master Widargelt will prevail. With your training, I know he will.

-optional end

===Delivering Widargelt's challenge to Theobald at Rustrock===
Theobald: Ah, I remember you—friend to the pathetic monks. You are bold to come here. What do you want?
Theobald: ...A letter of challenge? Hmph, a dated practice befitting a dying style, and a lot of effort simply to lose.
Theobald: I accept. Indeed, I anticipated that I would have to deal the stubborn fool another beating.
Theobald: I will be at Schism. And you may tell Widargelt—nay, my dear cousin Theodred—that he would do well to bring a coffin.

-optional start

D'zentsa: Master Widargelt's gonna win. I know it.

O'tchakha: So it begins...

-optional end

===Speaking with Widargelt at Schism===
Widargelt: The things you have taught us. I will bring them to bear in the duel.
Widargelt: The letter is delivered? My thanks, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}.
Widargelt: I have invited the people of Ala Gannha. They, too, shall bear witness.
Widargelt: The fight is to be single combat. But my opponent scruples at naught. Well do we know this. And so we must be prepared for anything.
Widargelt: But whatever should happen, I am confident we will prevail. For as I trained, I awakened to a new power. The power to protect.

-cutscene start

Theobald: Really? A crowd? Well, if you're determined to make a spectacle of your demise, who am I to stop you? Let all present witness the death of the Fist of Rhalgr.
Theobald: Hear me, people of Ala Mhigo! A feeble faith such as this charlatan peddles will avail you naught! Only a strong and absolute ruler can save you! Only ''I'' can save you!

Widargelt: Those words may as well come from the Empire! The people need not another tyrant! Nay, what they need is hope!
Widargelt: And hope they may yet have. Hope everlasting in their hearts. That none can take away.
Widargelt: So I beg you, brother. Give up your aspirations for the throne. Join me in reviving the Fist of Rhalgr. As is your right.
Widargelt: The time for deception is past. But one man I know wields the lance as you do. So take off this mask that you wear. The mask of a dead prince. And show me your face, Adri. My brother.

Theobald: Hahaha...
Theobald: Adri... Long has it been since last I heard that name. I had always thought you dim-witted, but it seems your memory still serves you well, at least.

Widargelt: Why do you so desire our destruction? So much so that you fool even yourself?

Theobald: Like you, I was an orphan. The temple was the only home I knew.
Theobald: But that home was taken from me, laid to waste at Theodoric's command. The monks, hailed as the realm's greatest warriors, could not withstand the mad king's might.
Theobald: It was then that I knew—knew that blood counts for more than all else!
Theobald: All the training we undergo to hone flesh and mind... None of it is worth a spit in the face of absolute power! And those who are born without it—those like me—will ever be made to suffer!
Theobald: But you—you had it all from the beginning. Born into the royal family, with the blood of kings coursing through your veins. You had the power to lead and to rule. But still you turned your back on our nation's liberation. And for what? For the sake of a Fist that couldn't protect itself!
Theobald: I was nobody. Just one of the Griffin's lowly doubles. But if you will not rise up for our nation, then ''I'' will! And you have no right to stop me—you, who have forfeited your own birthright!

Widargelt: Hear me, brother! Our blood defines not who we are. The path we walk is ours to choose. And I have chosen not to destroy. But to protect.

Theobald: Hollow words from someone born to power! You will never understand what it means to be weak! ''Never''!

Widargelt: I am Widargelt! A brother of the Fist of Rhalgr! That is who I am! No more, no less!
Widargelt: I live to revive the Fist of Rhalgr! And by my fist, I will prove it to you!

Hamon: Well, now. The professor said there'd be a spectacle, but I certainly won't say no to some action. I've been itching for it since our match was canceled.

Widargelt: Enough, Adri! Our goals are the same! Our methods but differ! Together, we can achieve much! We can restore our order!

Theobald: Adri is dead! I am Theobald, Theodoric's true heir and rightful king of Ala Mhigo! And by your death I shall claim my throne!

Widargelt: To resort to the tools of our oppression... He will stop at naught for power. It is a twisted existence. And we must straighten him out.
Widargelt: Come, my friends! We fight for hope!

-cutscene end

Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: Cease this madness, Adri!
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: Never! I have come this far—I will not stop now!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: I will see to Adri! Focus on the others!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: Come to me when you are hurt! I will heal you!
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: Hahahaha! None can stand in my way!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: More of them! Have care, my friends!
Hamon Holyfist: Chuchuto, Rurukuta! We're cleaning up the rank and file!
Chuchuto@Chuchuto Brightstar: Stay sharp, Rurukuta!
Rurukuta@Rurukuta Tornstar: Hmph, just more fodder for my fists.
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: You've been a thorn, adventurer. But I've just the thing to deal with you!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: Beware, [Forename]! It senses movement!
O'tchakha of the Endless Day: More reinforcements!?
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: Whatever it takes, by any means...I will be king!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: A king bereft of honor! No Ala Mhigan will accept you!
Hamon Holyfist: Leave that hunk o' junk to me—''Hamooon HOLYFIIIST''!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: It's just you now, Adri!
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: So much for the dreaded Corpse Brigade. In the end, they're just relics of a bygone age.
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: But not I! I will not fall to the likes of you!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: Enough, brother! It's over!
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: Silence! I'll not surrender to a craven who has forsaken his homeland!
Widargelt@Widargelt the Watcher: He leaves us no choice! Take down the infernal machine!
QIB: Damn you! If I must fall, I'm taking you to the seventh hell with me!
QIB: So much...unfinished...
Theobald@Theobald's Voice: I can't lose everything... Not again...
QIB: Ack... You can't beat old age...
QIB: I'm sorry...Master...
QIB: Ugh... I was careless...
QIB: Godsdammit...
QIB: It's in...your hands...

===After the fight===
Widargelt: Adri. When next we fight, let it be as brothers. Let it be face–to–face.
Widargelt: I am weak. Too weak to bear the Fist of Rhalgr alone. Yet come what may, I will not give up. Each time I fall, I will pick myself up.
Widargelt: From my heart, I ask you this. Will you not join me? Help me to build a new Fist. One that knows not highborn or low. That discerns not shadow or light. A Fist of Rhalgr where all may belong.

Erik: Your fiery zeal kindles hope within people's hearts, and doubt not but that many will come to you seeking strength—the strength to protect that which they hold dear, and by their own hands.
Erik: Now then, let us return to Ala Gannha. There is still much to do, not the least of all thanking our pugilist friends for their most timely arrival.

-optional start

D'zentsa: We couldn't have done it without you, [Forename].

Chuchuto: The way your fellow monks fought, it looked not so far departed from our own style. Unless I'm mistaken, you've taught them a trick or three!

Rurukuta: By any objective measure, Master Hamon is strong now, and I can only imagine how strong he used to be. I must work hard if I'm to be worthy of the Holyfist legacy.

Widargelt: The others wish to speak with you. When they are done, I would speak with you also.

-optional end

===Speaking with Hamon===
Hamon: 'Twas a fine speech, spoken from the heart. Lacked polish, to be sure, but that'll come with age and experience.

Rurukuta: And as good a drubbing as we gave them, the Corpse Brigade will be laying low for a while.

Hamon: As will I, I think. At my age, a moment of fun costs a week of soreness.

Chuchuto: You must admit, though, every so often it's good to hurl yourself into a real battle!

Rurukuta: A real battle? I don't know about you, but I scarcely broke a sweat.

Chuchuto: Oh? Then I suppose I was simply imagining all your huffing and puffing!

Hamon: Ohohoho! Well, sad though it is to part, it's past time we headed home. But I hope to continue this fine exchange with our friend monks...D'zentsa and O'tchakha especially.
Hamon: Young and lithe as they are, I believe they harbor much pugilistic potential. And it'd be my pleasure to personally help them explore it, hehehe...

Chuchuto: Gods, could you make it any more obvious!?

Hamon: Till next time, take care, [Forename]. And thanks for showing these old bones a good time!

===Speaking with O'tchakha===
O'tchakha: With your help, we have managed to weather another storm. I daresay we've all earned a moment's respite.

D'zentsa: You know, I can't help but feel that Master is too nice sometimes. After all that Theobald...er, Adri fellow did to him, he goes and begs the villagers to tend his wounds.

O'tchakha: So complete is his dedication to reviving the Fist of Rhalgr, he wastes no energy on such things as anger and retribution.

D'zentsa: Right. And at any rate, there's nothing standing in our way for now. We're free to get on with our mission.

O'tchakha: That we are. And what we've begun in Ala Gannha, we shall continue in all corners of Gyr Abania, never resting until the Fist of Rhalgr thrives throughout the realm once more.

D'zentsa: I'd say Master has his work cut out for him. He's gonna need all the support we can muster.

O'tchakha: So let us ever strive to grow stronger, the better to provide that support. After all, it wouldn't do to always rely on [Forename].

D'zentsa: Damn right! So what're we waiting for? Let's go and train!

O'tchakha: Wh-What? But we've only just— Er, pray excuse us, [Forename]...and thank you! From the bottom of our hearts, for everything!

===Speaking with Erik===
Erik: Witnessing your furious struggle, I could not help but wish that I, too, could contribute with my fists. My son, I suspect, felt the same way when he chose to join the Resistance.
Erik: But as he walked his own path, so too must I. As a man of science, it is my duty to pursue truth immutable, that the knowledge may one day benefit future generations.
Erik: I did my small part for Widargelt's cause. But know that it was mostly you, my friend, who helped him to forge ahead in the face of adversity—who picked him up when fate cast him down.
Erik: And for that I am grateful. You possess a noble heart, and it more than makes up for your lackluster mind.
Erik: With that, I shall head back to Ul'dah. As fine a distraction as it has been to watch youngbloods come into their own, my research will not advance itself.
Erik: As ever, should you wish to partake of my knowledge, do not hesitate to come to me.

===Speaking with Widargelt===
Widargelt: The recent trials have taught me much. About myself. About the extent of my debts.
Widargelt: Through adversity, none of you abandoned me. I nearly abandoned my dream. But never again. I owe it to those who stood by me.
Widargelt: To many I am indebted. And to you most of all. You are my master in all but name. Ever leading by example. Teaching me strength and grace.
Widargelt: I pray that you will help many others. As you have helped me.
Widargelt: I shall resume my mission. With my disciples at my side. Together, we will spread the Fist across the land.
Widargelt: The journey will be long. But come what may, I will see it through. For I am not alone.
Widargelt: Fare you well, my {{alternatives|sister|brother}}. Till next we meet.

System: This concludes the monk quests for FINAL FANTASY XIV: Stormblood. In order to undertake the next series of quests, you must first meet the following requirements:
System: ※FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers must be registered to your service account.
※You must have completed the main scenario quest “Shadowbringers.”
System: ※You must have completed the role quest “Courage Born of Fear.”
System: Once you have done so, the next monk quest will be available from Erik.
*Speak with Widargelt in Ala Gannha.
*Defeat the enemy!

==Journal==
*Widargelt remains in the depths of despair.

*Widargelt still needs time to process his recent defeat and the revelations about his past. But in spite of his own woes, he manages to show concern for his disciples, and asks that you speak with them and lift their spirits.

*You look in on D'zentsa and O'tchakha, who in turn express their concern for their master. Uncertain what to do, they decide to turn to the ever insightful Erik. While they keep an eye on the despairing Widargelt, they bid you fetch the professor from Rhalgr's Reach, home of the Resistance, where he is making his inquiries.

*You find Erik just as he finishes asking Resistance soldiers about the mysterious Theobald. After sharing with you his findings, he agrees to accompany you back to Ala Gannha to have a stern word with Widargelt.

*Widargelt has largely come to terms with his defeat; rather, the revelation of his true identity as the nephew of the King of Ruin has made him question his fitness to revive the Fist of Rhalgr. Through a tale about his departed son, Erik teaches Widargelt that a man is defined not by his blood, but by the choices he makes. His vigor and purpose thus restored, Widargelt turns his attention to what must be done. He reveals his suspicion that Theobald is in fact someone known to him: a brother from the Temple of the Fist named Adri, whom he had long believed dead. If it comes to it, Widargelt stands ready to strike him down, and he asks that you train him and his disciples in the way of the pugilist, that they might defeat the Corpse Brigade. Make your way to the old training grounds and begin their training.

*Widargelt and his disciples prove eager students, and they quickly grasp the fundamentals of pugilism. As you train, a man named Hewerald arrives bearing the news that Erik has made a momentous discovery pertaining to Theobald. While your students continue their training, you decide to follow the messenger to East End, where the professor awaits.

*The meeting with Erik turns out to be a trap, and you are forced to defend yourself. As you gain the upper hand, however, the battle transforms into a hostage situation. Just when it seems you must surrender, Widargelt and his disciples come to the rescue, having used their newfound fighting skills to overwhelm the sentries posted around the forest.

*With the enemy thus routed, you may turn your attention to the liberated Erik.

*Erik is well considering his ordeal, and your friends set out for Ala Gannha. Join them back at the village and speak with Widargelt to learn of his plans.

*Widargelt declares his intent to challenge Theobald and put an end to his tyrannical ambitions. As your brother monk prepares for the encounter, see to it that you hone your own fists and feet.
**※The next monk quest will be available from Widargelt upon reaching level 70.

==Dialogue==
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
Widargelt: It's you again, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}.
Widargelt: My new pupils. They have lost faith in me. And so I have lost them.
Widargelt: But perhaps it is just as well. For I am unfit to teach. I am the mad king's kin. It would be an affront.
Widargelt: Forgive me... I should not burden you. But to you, I feel I can speak my heart. Reveal things I would not to others. Not even my closest disciples. Speaking of whom...
Widargelt: D'zentsa and O'tchakha. Their bodies may have healed. But their pride will yet be raw. They would be heartened for your visit.

-optional start
Widargelt: I have not the right to revive the Fist...
D'zentsa: If only I was stronger, dammit!
-optional end

=== Speaking with O'tchakha===
O'tchakha: Ah, [Forename]. How good of you to come and see us.
O'tchakha: Both Zentsa and I are well now, never you fear. 'Tis Master Widargelt that worries us. He will not soon recover from the emotional blow.

D'zentsa: Given all that's happened, you can hardly blame him. <sigh> We were supposed to support Master, but in the end we were just dead weight...

O'tchakha: Lessons have been suspended since the incident. Not that it matters, though—the villagers have ceased attending. It is a big setback to our mission, but the biggest setback of all is Master's melancholy.

D'zentsa: Professor Erik would know what to do, I'd wager. Let's go and consult him. ...But, ugh, I don't want to leave Master by himself.

O'tchakha: Nor do I. [Forename], might we trouble you to find the professor and bring him back?
O'tchakha: I believe he took his investigation of the man named Theobald to the Resistance, at Rhalgr's Reach.

-optional start
O'tchakha: Rain, hail, or shine, Master Widargelt has never skipped training. It must be a veritable storm inside.
D'zentsa: This won't do. I need to get stronger, else I can't protect anyone. Else I can't protect...
-optional end

===Speaking with Erik===
Erik: Ah, [Forename], you come at a good time. I've just finished inquiring after our friend, His Aspiring Majesty Theobald, and you are doubtless eager to hear my findings. Ahem!
Erik: By all accounts, 'twas but recently that the man surfaced. None can quite say whence he came, but no sooner did he appear than he declared himself Theodoric's heir and proceeded to recruit people to his cause.
Erik: But the prevailing sentiment around the fellow is one of uncertainty. It should come as no surprise, but folk are not exactly keen on the Griffin's return. And lest we forget, few have fond memories of the King of Ruin's reign, nor do they have any reason to love his heir.
Erik: That is all. Now then, what brings you here?
Erik: Still sulking into his cyclas, you say? <sigh> Utterly hopeless...
Erik: Very well, I shall go and slap some sense into the fool. Come, [Forename].

===Speaking to Widargelt===
Erik: Widargelt. A thrashing though it was, how long will you let a single defeat keep you down? As I hear it, you've been neglecting your training—haven't so much as lifted a finger. You would let all that muscle go to fat?

Widargelt: Defeat is painful. This is true. But I am no stranger to its sting. In time, the sensation fades. But this... It is no mere sensation. It is my very existence.
Widargelt: The man who destroyed the Fist of Rhalgr. His blood courses through my veins. That I should seek to revive the order... It is an affront to the dead. I have not the right.

Erik: ...So that is the way of it. I will tell you a story. I once had a son. In many ways he took after me, and 'twas my hope that he would one day follow in my footsteps.
Erik: But the boy had grander dreams. Wanting to change the world, he took off and joined the Resistance. And then he died.
Erik: His unit was hopelessly surrounded by imperial forces. In order to save his comrades, he swept up a sack of explosives and—
...But the details are irrelevant.
Erik: For long years I lived with regret. If only my son had walked the path of science, I lamented, he might still be here.
Erik: But eventually I came to a realization: it was his choice to make, and make it he did. He chose to be a soldier and died a hero. In acknowledging this, I was able to attain a semblance of peace.
Erik: We are defined not by our blood, Widargelt, but by our choices. So your uncle is the mad king. What of it? You are not him. You are you, by whatever name, and there is no limit to what path you may walk. That path may be fraught with hardship, but you mustn't give up.
Erik: Behold the soldiers of the Resistance. Even now, they fight tirelessly against the might of the Empire, ever ready to render up their lives for their cause.
Erik: Behold the soldiers of the Resistance. Even after their great victory, they continue their vigil, ever ready to render up their lives for their cause.
Erik: These men and women bear a great burden, one beneath which they could buckle at any moment. Yet they stand firm to the very last. I used to wonder, why do they not give up? My son taught me the answer: they believe that the moment you give up on something is the moment you lose it.
Erik: When first we met, you were hells-bent on retribution. Mule-headed though you were, you came to see the folly of your path. But there comes a time when a man must fight. For you, that time is now.
Erik: So find your inner mule, Widargelt, and fight. Fight for that which you believe in.

Widargelt: You are right, Professor. I see now what is truly important. Theobald desires absolute rule. If he has his way, the people will suffer. This cannot be borne. It flies in the face of the new Fist.
Widargelt: I would restore hope to the people. But to do this, I must transcend him. I will become stronger. And I will protect that which I hold dear.

Erik: Full glad am I to hear it. Suffice it to say I shall aid in whatever way I can.

Widargelt: Something else has been bothering me, Professor. About Theobald. His polearm techniques are distinct. I have seen them before. But when? Where?
Widargelt: 'Twas a long time ago. When the Temple of the Fist still stood.
Widargelt: <gasp> No... It couldn't possibly be...Adri?

Erik: Who is this Adri?

Widargelt: A brother at the Temple of the Fist. And the closest thing I had to family. I had thought him dead. Slain when the temple was razed.

Erik: But now you believe that he may still be alive, and is the one who seeks to prevent your reviving the Fist of Rhalgr?

Question: What will you say?

> Let us confront him and uncover the truth.
Widargelt: I looked upon Adri as a true brother. I do not wish for us to fight.
> If it comes to it, could you strike him down?
Widargelt: I looked upon Adri as a true brother. I do not wish for it to end that way.
---

Widargelt: But neither can I yield in my purpose. I seek to restore hope to the people. Adri seeks to deprive them of it. If we must stand opposed...
Widargelt: Then I stand ready to strike him down!

Erik: But remember, Adri is not alone. He has rallied the Corpse Brigade to his cause, and against them the Fist of Rhalgr is ineffectual. How do you intend to overcome this disadvantage?

Widargelt: If our fighting style will not serve, we will master another. One that is free and unshackled by form.
Widargelt: [Forename], I would ask a favor of you. All you learned as a pugilist, we would learn also. Will you teach us?

Question: What will you say?

> Reckon you can keep up?
> It's going to be tough.
---

Widargelt: Give us your worst, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}! We will take it all in our stride!
Widargelt: If you are ready, I would begin at once. Let us train at Gyr Kehim. As the monks of old once did. I shall summon the girls. Pray meet us there.

Erik: Well, it would seem that the storm has blown over. With that, I shall return to Ul'dah to tend to a task of mine own. I trust you will see to the rest here.

===Speaking with Widargelt at Gyr Kehim====
Widargelt: Theobald leads the Corpse Brigade. Soldiers trained to suppress the Fist of Rhalgr. Against them, our style is ineffective.
Widargelt: If we are to triumph, we must broaden our horizons. And [Forename] will help us.

D'zentsa: Alright! Let's do it!

O'tchakha: I shall give it my all!

Widargelt: You well know how we fight. Our strengths and our weaknesses. Tell us what we must improve. From the eyes of a pugilist.

Question: What do they need to improve?

> Speed.

''(First time this option is chosen)''

Widargelt: I see... Above all, a pugilist is swift. For each blow he receives, he delivers a dozen.

''(Subsequent times)''

Widargelt: So our speed is yet lacking? Very well.

''(Both)''

Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha! Our combinations must be seamless! Ten thousand Bootshines!

> Endurance.

''(First time this option is chosen)''

Widargelt: I see... Beside the pugilist, we want for endurance. No number of blows must stop us.

''(Subsequent times)''

Widargelt: So our endurance is yet lacking? Very well.

''(Both)''

Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha! Our endurance must be unyielding! Steel Peak ten thousand times!

> Strength.

''(First time this option is chosen)''

Widargelt: I see... Beside the pugilist, we want for power. Every blow must be telling.

''(Subsequent times)''

Widargelt: So our power is yet lacking? Very well.

''(Both)''

Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha! Our strikes must be harder than stone! Arm of the Destroyer for ten hours!

---

''(After the first choice)''

Widargelt: <pant> So this is how you trained... <pant> It is eye-opening...
Widargelt: But it is not enough. We must learn more. Or we cannot defeat the enemy. Please, [Forename]! Teach us more!

''(After the first choice)''

Widargelt: <huff> Such brutal training... <gasp> Small wonder you are strong...
Widargelt: But we are not finished yet! Again, [Forename]!

''(Question repeats three times)''

Hewerald@???: Pray forgive me my interruption. My name is Hewerald, and I am come at Professor Erik's behest.

Widargelt: The professor? Has something happened?

Hewerald: Nothing untoward, I assure you. He has made a momentous discovery pertaining to the man called Theobald.

Widargelt: Truly!? We must go to him at once!

Hewerald: Ah, beg your pardons, but the professor bade me bring {{alternatives|f=Mistress|m=Master}} [Forename] alone. He believes that you and the ladies should focus upon your training first and foremost.

Widargelt: I suppose he is right. Very well.
Widargelt: Go on, {{alternatives|f=sister|m=brother}}. You have taught us all we need to know. All that remains is to practice. Make it second nature.

Hewerald: My thanks for your understanding. Then without further ado, please follow me.

D'zentsa: No way I'm gettin' thrashed like that again. I'm gonna train harder than I've ever trained before!

O'tchakha: It wouldn't do to always rely on you and Master Widargelt. Nay, we must grow strong and become able to fend for ourselves.

===Speaking with Hewerald in East End===
Hewerald: Not far now. The professor awaits beyond.
Hewerald: Hehehehe...
Hewerald: Hahahaha! I can't believe you fell for it!
Hewerald: Ah, but to be fair, I spoke no lies. The professor ''did'' call for you.
Hewerald: “Help me, [Forename],” he said! Ahahaha!

===Fighting off the Corpse Brigade ambush===
Hewerald@Hewerald Ironaxe: Can't have you meddling no more, see?
Hewerald@Hewerald Ironaxe: You're strong, I'll give you that. But how do you like these odds?
Hewerald@Hewerald Ironaxe: I'll put you in your place!
Hewerald@Hewerald Ironaxe: The hells you all waiting for!? Finish {{alternatives|her|him}}!
Hewerald@Hewerald Ironaxe: Stubborn bastard... We'll just have to try something different.

===After defeating the Corpse Brigade ambush===
Hewerald: Surrender now or he's a dead man!

Erik: Can't even finish a fight you started!? Cravens, the whole lot of you!

Hewerald: Call me what you will, but no one stands between the king and his throne!

Widargelt: You were slow to return. So we followed. It was right that we did.

O'tchakha: Thank Rhalgr we were not too late.

Hewerald: You... How the hells did you get past the sentries?

D'zentsa: We trampled right over them, how else?

Hewerald: Damn it... Your ilk was supposed to be easy pickings...
Hewerald: The day's yours, but it isn't over. Mark my words.

-optional start
Widargelt: We are stronger thanks to your teachings. Strong enough to face the Corpse Brigade.

D'zentsa: We're still nowhere near your level, but I reckon we've improved some!

O'tchakha: <pant> From the training...to our rushing here...to the battle itself... <pant> It has been a day...of exertion...
-optional end

===Speaking to Erik===
Erik: My thanks, [Forename]. I was on my way back from Ul'dah when they set upon me, and none too gently, the bloody brutes.

Widargelt: I am sorry, Professor. It is my fault. You were put in danger because of me.

Erik: Haven't you learned anything, you dolt? I am part of this cause of my own volition. For better or worse, I alone bear responsibility for my actions. At any rate, I have done what I needed to do, and you may resume training safe in that knowledge.

O'tchakha: Begging your pardons, but may I suggest we leave this place? The enemy may still be lurking nearby.

Erik: The wisest thing said all day. Come, let us return to Ala Gannha.

-optional start
D'zentsa: We got the better of the Corpse Brigade this time, and it's all thanks to you, [Forename]. You and your...ungh...brutal training.

O'tchakha: Your lessons have allowed us to transcend the limits of our style, [Forename]. All you have taught us, we shall practice without cease.
-optional end

===Speaking with Widargelt in Ala Gannha===
Widargelt: I thank you again, [Forename]. For your teachings. Owing to them, we could save the professor.
Widargelt: He sustained some injuries. But for a blessing, they are minor. The village healer tends to him.
Widargelt: When he is recovered, I mean to challenge Theobald. For that day, I will train hard. And I will put an end to his tyrannical ambitions. Witness me, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}.
*Speak with Widargelt in Ala Gannha.
*Defeat the enemy!

==Journal==

=== Speaking with O'tchakha===

===Speaking with Erik===

===Speaking to Widargelt===

===Speaking to Erik===

==Journal==

=== Speaking with O'tchakha===

===Speaking with Erik===

===Speaking to Widargelt===

Ahahaha!

Widargelt: Worry not about us, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}. Go to the professor.

D'zentsa: <pant> And there I thought you were a demon in battle...

O'tchakha: The training is arduous, but we will persevere—for Master Widargelt.

==Journal==
*Widargelt has a plan for expansion.

*While Widargelt is pleased with his growing membership of students, there are villagers still who doubt the authenticity of his style. In order to win them over, he plans to host a cross-discipline match pitting monks against pugilists. As a well-known face among the Pugilists' Guild, you have been tasked with delivering the invitation. Make your way to Ul'dah and broach the subject with Hamon.

*You arrive at the Pugilists' Guild to find not only Hamon and Chuchuto, but Rurukuta as well, temporarily returned from his wanderings. All are responsive to the idea of a cross-discipline match, and the guildmaster formally accepts. Make your way back to Ala Gannha and inform Widargelt of the pugilists' coming.

*Widargelt is ecstatic to learn that Hamon has accepted the invitation, and he sets about preparing for the match. He bids you meet him directly in the Fringes at Schism, the chosen venue.

*No sooner do you arrive at Schism than cries ring out from the river─D'zentsa and O'tchakha are in danger. Hasten after Widargelt to their aid.

*You find Widargelt on his knees, handily bested by a band of men led by the mysterious Theobald, who claims to be the Griffin and the rightful King of Ala Mhigo both. He issues a stern warning against reviving the Fist of Rhalgr, and goes on to reveal that Widargelt is in fact his cousin, Theodred, who was raised at the Temple of the Fist in order to spare him the King of Ruin's wrath. Theobald then leaves, but not before declaring his intent to rule Ala Mhigo with an iron fist. With the immediate danger passed, you may turn your attention to your comrades.

*In light of recent events, Widargelt has no choice but to call off the match, and he apologetically sends Hamon and his crew back to Ul'dah. While Widargelt checks on his pupils, take word of these troubling developments to Erik, now returned to Ala Gannha from his field work.

*Erik is unable to hide his shock at your report. The veracity of Theobald's words aside, the professor posits that his minions are members of the Corpse Brigade─elite soldiers trained in counter-monk combat, who once served Theodoric as his personal guard. Erik promises to investigate the many claims made, and bids you look in on Widargelt.

*You find Widargelt deeply discouraged, not only by the sound drubbing he received but also the shocking revelation of his origin. For now, give your brother monk the time and space he requires.
**※The next monk quest will be available from Widargelt upon reaching level 68.
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
===Accepting the quest===
Widargelt: You look well, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}. Stronger than when last we spoke.
Widargelt: Our membership, too, grows stronger. Word spread after the speech. Others have come to learn. But it is too soon to be satisfied.
Widargelt: I would welcome more to the faith. But there are villagers still who doubt us. Our authenticity and our purpose.
Widargelt: To convince them, I would demonstrate our techniques. In real combat, by way of a cross-discipline match.
Widargelt: For our opponents, I have the pugilists of Ul'dah in mind. Assuming they are willing.
Widargelt: You are well known in the Pugilists' Guild. If you ask, they will surely listen.
Widargelt: Will you speak with them on our behalf?
Widargelt: You have my thanks. Go well, [Forename]. And my regards to Master Hamon.

-optional start
D'zentsa: A thousand push-ups and a thousand squats—that's reasonable to begin with, right?
O'tchakha: I hope Zentsa does not scare our new pupils away with her unreasonable expectations...
Widargelt: I look forward to Master Hamon's response.
-optional end

===Speaking with Hamon at the Pugilists' Guild===
Hamon: Oho! If it isn't a familiar face, and one I'm rather fond of!
Hamon: Chuchuto, Rurukuta! We have an esteemed guest!

Chuchuto: [Forename]! Gods, how long has it been?

Rurukuta: Well, well, it seems I picked a good time to take a break from my wanderings. It's good to see you again.

Hamon: That it is! Now then, what brings you here, {{alternatives|lass|lad}}?

Chuchuto: A cross-discipline match? Why, that sounds exciting! Don't you agree, Master?

Hamon: <mumble> Gyr Abania so far... As well be the other side of the world... <grumble> Mostly sinewy Highlanders... And male ones at that...

Chuchuto: Oh, that's rich coming from a sinewy Highlander, and a wrinkled old one at that!

Rurukuta: I, for one, would welcome the challenge. I was growing weary of pummeling Chuchuto senseless.

Chuchuto: Says the one on a losing streak!

Hamon: But of course we'll go. After all you've done for us, it's the least we could do.
Hamon: The sooner the better, I take it, and there's no time like the present. We'll head out at once.
Hamon: Hurry up and pack your things. We're going to Gyr Abania!
Hamon: You go on ahead, {{alternatives|lass|lad}}, and let young Widargelt know to expect us. It's on like an Ala Mhigan monk!

-optional start
Hamon: I've been keeping at my training, regained much of my former strength. Still a long way off from my Holyfist days, to be sure, but no matter─I've got years ahead of me! Ohohoho!
Chuchuto: Rurukuta acts all nonchalant, but he's the keenest of us all. Hmph, some things never change!
-optional end

===Reporting to Widargelt in Ala Gannha===
Widargelt: The pugilists are on their way? Rhalgr be praised!
Widargelt: There is much to do. I will make the match known to the villagers. D'zentsa, O'tchakha, be on hand to receive our guests.
Widargelt: And you, [Forename]. Schism. That is to be the venue. Pray take yourself there and prepare.

===Speaking with Widargelt at Schism===
Widargelt: You are here. Good. The people of Ala Gannha expect a quality match. Let us not disappoint them.
Widargelt: Soon, the girls will arrive with the pugilists. I also told the professor. But he will not attend. Science before savagery, he says.

O'tchakha: Aaaaaah!

D'zentsa: Seven hells! What are you— Urrrgh!

Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha! They are in trouble!
Widargelt: The voices came from the river! With me, [Forename]!

===Following Widargelt===
Widargelt: <pant> My techniques... They have no effect...

Theobald@Masked Man: Hahaha...
Theobald@Masked Man: Well, well... We thought we knew every ilm of your style. But you, adventurer—you are not like the others.

Widargelt: <gasp> You are the Griffin... The wretch who led countless soldiers to their doom. Good men and women with lives ahead of them. <pant> But...you are supposed to be dead.

Theobald@Masked Man: The wretch who died was but a double, and good riddance, too, for he presumed to have ambitions of his own. ''I'' am the true Griffin. And my true name is Theobald, Theodoric's heir and rightful King of Ala Mhigo!

Widargelt: Theodoric's heir? King of Ala Mhigo?

Theobald: Aye, and in my royal duty, I have come to deliver a warning. Such cults as propagate false beliefs will not be suffered under my reign. Cease any foolish notion of reviving the Fist of Rhalgr. Swear fealty unto me, or you will meet the same end as your treacherous forebears.

Widargelt: Lies! Theodoric's line is spent! And rightful or no, none would bow before you! The people will not suffer another tyrant!

Theobald: You wound me, Widargelt. Or should I say...Theodred, dear cousin.

Widargelt: What!?

Theobald: Hahaha! All this time and you didn't know? Neither who you are, nor what became of your parents? This ignorance cannot be borne. Nay, we must rectify it at once. You see, your father and mother—they conspired to betray the royal house. For their crimes, His Grace, my father, put them to death.
Theobald: And though your parents were the dimmest of traitors, they had wits enough to know when the game was over. So they sent their precious Theodred, then but a bawling babe, to be raised in safety at the Temple of the Fist. Though my father tended to that squalid little place soon enough.

Widargelt: Y-You dare mock my parents ''and'' my home!? Who you claim to be, I care not! I will make you pay!

Theobald: Have you learned nothing? Your techniques are useless against us. If your defeat suffices not to convince you, look to the proof of your beloved temple's destruction.
Theobald: Listen well. Ala Mhigo needs a strong ruler—an ''absolute'' ruler—to smite her enemies and restore her to glory. That ruler is me. Your feeble Fist has no place in her future.

===Speaking to Widargelt===
Widargelt: It is not a good time for the match. With apologies to Master Hamon, I must call it off.
Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha. Pray return to Ala Gannha and rest.
Widargelt: I shall remain behind to receive our guests. Wait with me, [Forename].

Hamon: Whew! Sorry for the delay, my friends. Having been here once before, I thought I had a handle on the route, but 'twas the route that had a handle on me! Hohoho!
Hamon: ...Hm? Is something the matter?

Widargelt: Aye... Harsh truths have been thrust before me. Calling my very existence into question. As I am, I am no fit opponent for you and yours.
Widargelt: Forgive me, Master Hamon. Far as you have come, it pains me to say this. But I must call off our match.

Hamon: Well, that you don't do so lightly is plain to see. Whatever has happened must be serious indeed.
Hamon: For now, my boy, you'd best focus on yourself. There'll be another time to trade blows.
Hamon: Come, you two. We're going home.

Rurukuta: Already!? We've barely gotten here, and by the scenic route besides. Let me rest a moment, will you?

Chuchuto: Oh, don't be such a milksop! With all your roaming, surely this distance is nothing to you!

Hamon: And Widargelt? To make it clear, we're merely postponing the match. Whatever it is that ails you now, I have faith that you'll bounce back, ready to match me blow for blow.

Widargelt: Master Hamon is a soul of kindness. I have nothing but gratitude.
Widargelt: Let us return to Ala Gannha. I must look in on D'zentsa and O'tchakha. Meanwhile, please find Professor Erik. Tell him all that has come to pass.

-optional start
Hamon: Young Widargelt wants to revive the Fist of Rhalgr, isn't that right? A noble mission, but far from simple, as I'm sure you already know. But when the going gets tough, you have to keep believing—in your cause, and in each other. And if ever you need extra pairs of fists, you can call upon us any time.
Chuchuto: If there's anything we can do, anything at all, you just let us know.
Widargelt: Please find Professor Erik. Tell him all that has come to pass.
-optional end

===Speaking with Erik in Ala Gannha===
Erik: What!? Let me paraphrase: you are telling me that Widargelt—''our'' Widargelt, the lumbering slab—is in fact Theodred, nephew to Theodoric, the King of Ruin...
Erik: And that this man who claims to be the Griffin—presumed dead—also claims to be Theobald, Theodoric's rightful heir—also presumed dead. By the gods, not even a drink-addled bard could make this up.
Erik: Outlandish details aside, I have an inkling as to the identity of those who set upon you. They are the selfsame crew that razed the Temple of the Fist: the Corpse Brigade. Trained in counter-monk combat, they served the King of Ruin as his personal guard—though personal agents of destruction would be more accurate. But when their liege fell, they followed in their turn, becoming overqualified bandits.
Erik: Even so, it appears they have not entirely forgotten their training. That would explain why, for all their mastery of the Fist, Widargelt and the girls had no answer to them. That you could hold your own, I believe, is due to your pugilistic background.
Erik: At any rate, now is the time to arm ourselves with knowledge. First of all, I shall look into Theobald's myriad claims. As for you, I suggest that you check on your friend. Knowing the oaf, he will be confused and crestfallen to no end.

===Speaking with Widargelt===
Widargelt: Ah, it is you...
Widargelt: I have known defeat. Tasted my fair share. But not like this. I was helpless as a babe.
Widargelt: “The strength to protect,” I proclaimed. But I could not even protect my own. All my years of training. All useless. What have I to offer the people?
Widargelt: And to think...the mad king is my uncle. I am nephew to the man who murdered my parents. Who destroyed our temple. Who brought our nation to ruin.
...Forgive me, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}. I would be alone.
</nowiki>}}

==Journal==
*Indecision is writ plain on Widargelt's face.

*You inform Widargelt of your readiness to depart, but the monk himself appears unready due to his agonizing over a creed for the new Fist of Rhalgr. At D'zentsa's urging, he decides to strike out in the hope that inspiration will strike along the way. Your first stop is an old training ground for monks called Schism, situated in the Fringes.

*The visit to Schism does not avail Widargelt in his quest for a creed, but he forges on undeterred. Follow him to the village of Ala Gannha, where Professor Erik has gone ahead to scout.

*Arriving at the village, Widargelt witnesses a heated exchange between two villagers. The experience is the spark Widargelt needed, and he finally comes up with a fitting doctrine to guide the Fist of Rhalgr into a new age. With that, he is ready to proclaim the order's return to the world. As the foremost monk in the party, you have been tasked with performing a demonstration before the villagers. Let Widargelt know when you are ready to begin.

*First impressions last. Kick off your demonstration by performing a Steel Peak on the dummy.

*You have pulled off a textbook Steel Peak. Follow it up with a Dragon Kick.

*You have pulled off a picture-perfect Dragon Kick. Bring your demonstration home with the Forbidden Chakra.

*Your blistering strikes pave the way for Widargelt's words, and he gives an impassioned speech and wins over the gathered crowd. Speak with Widargelt to learn his mind on the result of this first showing.

*In no small part due to your aid, Widargelt has taken a first momentous step towards reviving the Fist of Rhalgr. The monk will remain in Ala Gannha awhile to initiate interested villagers into the fundamentals of the faith. In the meantime, he bids you continue honing your skills, for they will doubtless be called upon again ere long.
**※The next monk quest will be available from Widargelt upon reaching level 65.
==Dialogue==
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
-optional start
D'zentsa: C'mon, let's get going already!
O'tchakha: Oh, have a bit of patience, will you? You are not a child anymore!
-optional end
===Accepting the Quest===
Widargelt: Are you ready to depart, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}?
Widargelt: Good. The professor has already left. He makes for a village called Ala Gannha. There, he will take the measure of the land.
Widargelt: I would strike out soon as well. But one matter troubles me still. The creed for a new Fist of Rhalgr.

D'zentsa: With all due respect, Master, but at this rate we'll never get to Gyr Abania.

Widargelt: ...You are right. Sometimes the answer cannot be forced. Mayhap it will come to me on the road. Very well, let us away.
Widargelt: En route, I would make a stop. The place is called Schism. Monks once trained there. In revisiting the past, we may better walk the future.

-optional start
D'zentsa: Heh, you feelin' it? 'Cause I'm feelin' it!

O'tchakha: My chakra fairly hums for the surfeit of aether. 'Tis plain this was but another ancient battlefield in Gyr Abania's bloody history.
-optional end

===Speaking with Widargelt at Schism===

Widargelt: As a child, I came to this place. We faced fearsome fiends, that we might open our chakra.
Widargelt: In returning here, I hoped there would be a spark. Inspiration for a new creed. But it is not so simple.

O'tchakha: Hmmm, the Fist once taught that, through the pursuit of strength, one can approach the sublimity of Rhalgr...

Widargelt: A teaching our forebears followed to their undoing. In pursuit of strength, they sought the power of rule. And by that power they were destroyed. Our creed must rise above that dark past. Or it cannot light the way unto the future. Nay, we must find a new path.

D'zentsa: Well, there's nothing like a journey for findin' paths. Let's keep moving, Master. Something will come to mind before you know it.

Widargelt: So I pray, D'zentsa. So I pray. But yes, let us continue on to the Peaks. East to the village of Ala Gannha. There Professor Erik awaits us.

-optional start
D'zentsa: People live here?
O'tchakha: You'd be forgiven for thinking it's deserted.
-optional end

===Speaking with Widargelt in Ala Gannha===

Widargelt: Ala Gannha. When I return here, I remember. The day the Temple of the Fist was razed.
Widargelt: On that day, I was training. Like all the days before. Then without warning, we were attacked.
Widargelt: We all of us fought bravely. Even little ones like me. Desperate to protect our temple. Our home.
Widargelt: But it was all in vain. One after the other, we fell. All the while the temple burned.
Widargelt: Some few of us managed to flee. Me with my closest brother, Adri. We stumbled into this village, smoke billowing behind us. But when I looked around, Adri was not there. I never saw him again.
Widargelt: ...Forgive me. Now is not the time for sorrowful recollection. Come, let us look for the professor.

Pessimistic Youth: ...Go on, then, join the bloody Resistance! Add to the pile of corpses! That's the only difference you're gonna make!

Determined Youth: You're wrong! I'm gonna make a ''real'' difference! I'm gonna train hard and honor Rhalgr, and He'll grant me power!

Pessimistic Youth: That power couldn't save the temple—our home! What makes you think it's going to save us now!?
Pessimistic Youth: Don't be a fool! No matter how strong you become, you'd still be one man against the might of the Empire!

Determined Youth: Say what you will, but my mind's made up. I'm not letting the bastard imperials take any more from us. You just...you just take care of yourself, you hear?

Pessimistic Youth: Don't be a fool! No matter how strong you become, you'd still be one man against the might of the Empire! They might be beaten now, but they won't stay beaten forever, mark my words!

Determined Youth: And you mark ''my'' words: my mind's made up. I'm not letting the bastard imperials take from us again. You just...you just take care of yourself, you hear?

Widargelt: Souls crushed to submission. The fire in their hearts extinguished. To rekindle hope within such people... That must be the purpose of the new Fist.
Widargelt: ...Praise be, I have it. Our new creed.
Widargelt: To those who have had their homes stolen. Their loved ones taken. Naught is more desirous than strength. The strength to protect that which they hold dear.

Erik: Well, well, I see you have found your answer, and rather more quickly than I had expected of someone who'd sooner strike, rather than think, with his head.
Erik: With the order's purpose thus established, we may consider the question of place. I regret to say, however, that the old temple grounds are currently occupied by the Resistance, and there is naught to indicate that they will vacate any time soon.

Widargelt: The grounds hold symbolic meaning. A fitting stage for reviving the Fist. But ultimately, the physical location matters not.
Widargelt: For our mission lies in the spiritual realm. Within people's hearts. There we will rekindle the faith. And all may know the solace of worship.

Erik: That, as they say, is the spirit. Now then, I shall report on how matters stand in the region. But few Fist faithful remain, even accounting for those who practice in secret. Nor has there been any trace of the sect of shadow, not since their misguided leader's downfall. Save for those who came over to the light, it is safe to assume that his ambitions died with him.

Widargelt: We have a long road ahead. That much is plain. But we will see our journey through. One step at a time. And the first step begins here and now.

D'zentsa: Great! ...So, er, what do we do exactly?

Widargelt: We hold a demonstration. Give the people tangible proof. Proof that the Fist is returned.
Widargelt: [Forename]. First impressions last, and you are the first among us. As such, I would entrust this task to you.

Erik: You may leave it to me to round up the villagers. I shall cry up a veritable storm for the coming spectacle!

Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha. Take the wooden dummy. Set it up on the village outskirts. And [Forename]—limber up, and tell me when you are ready.

-optional start
System: A training manikin of Ala Mhigan make has been set in the ground.
D'zentsa: No mercy, [Forename]! Sweep the leg!
O'tchakha: Zentsa, will you calm down!? Oh, please ignore her!
-optional end

===Speaking with Widargelt near the training dummy===

Widargelt: Not many came. Far fewer than I had hoped. But no less of a show will we give them for it.
Widargelt: Come, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}! Your performance will mark the revival of the Fist of Rhalgr!
Widargelt: Lead in with Twin Snakes! Follow on with a Dragon Kick! Then finish it with Demolish!

System: Twin Snakes can be performed by first using Form Shift.

===After striking the dummy with Demolish===
Dour Villager: Hey, ain't that the Fist of Rhalgr?

Cynical Villager: But I thought all the monks was gone!

Widargelt: Good people of Ala Gannha. I am Widargelt. Proud son of Ala Mhigo. And brother of the Fist of Rhalgr.
Widargelt: All know the sad tale of our order. Years ago, the King of Ruin laid our temple to waste. Our faith was lost to the people.
Widargelt: But without faith, it is people who are lost. For to lose faith is to lose hope. But we need hope now, in this bleak age. More than ever before.
Widargelt: So I come before you today. And I beseech you: join me in reviving the Fist of Rhalgr! Let us restore hope to the land!

Pessimistic Youth: You can't fool us! You just want soldiers—fodder for the front lines! You're no different from the accursed Masks!

Widargelt: So it was in the past. Our order was seduced by power. Swore allegiance to the royal family. We monks were little more than tools of war.
Widargelt: But that was the Fist of old. The new Fist serves no king. It hungers not for glory. It thirsts not for blood. Nay, friends. It seeks only to protect that which we hold dear.

Pessimistic Youth: Protect...

Widargelt: Rhalgr is the Destroyer. As His disciples, there is but one thing we ought to destroy: our own weakness! Therein lies the strength to protect! Therein lies hope!
Widargelt: I will not lie: I am no great warrior. My forebears would put me to shame. But I am not alone. Nay, I have stout comrades beside me. Who are no less dedicated to the cause.
Widargelt: My foremost pupils, D'zentsa and O'tchakha!
Widargelt: And [Forename], whose sublime skills you just witnessed!
Widargelt: [Forename], please say a word to the people.

Question: What will you say?

> Join us! Let us begin anew!
> Are you ready for pain?
Widargelt: Haha, our {{alternatives|sister|brother}} monk jests. Rest assured {{alternatives|she|he}} is a gentle soul.
---

Widargelt: To bring you hope, we will give our all! Every onze of our being! This we solemnly swear!

-optional start
D'zentsa: That went great, I'd say! Everyone was hangin' off every word!

O'tchakha: Master Widargelt spoke from the heart, and the villagers couldn't help but be moved. I'm very proud of him.
-optional end

===Speaking with Widargelt===
Widargelt: My thanks, [Forename]. Your performance paved the way for my words. All present lent their ears. No few opened their hearts.
Widargelt: Already, villagers have come. Seeking to learn of the new Fist. A fine first showing.
Widargelt: Our forebears will doubtless be pleased. By restoring the Fist, we honor their memory.
Widargelt: I shall commence the villagers' training at once. Initiate them into the fundamentals of the faith.
Widargelt: When that is over, we may continue our mission. Till then, pray see to honing your own skills. Ere long, they will be called upon again!
*Professor Erik eyes you with a look of self-satisfaction.

*Greeting you with his customary condescension, Professor Erik informs you that Widargelt is troubled by some matter or other. The professor has been unable to prize the details out of the tight-lipped monk, but he believes that you will fare better. Make your way to Revenant's Toll, where Widargelt is based, and make yourself available to your brother-in-arms.

*As the professor predicts, Widargelt readily reveals to you his woes. The Ala Mhigan Resistance has invited him to rejoin the cause, and though he is resolved to turn down the offer, the event has set him to thinking about his purpose─what he can do in aid of his beleaguered homeland. O'tchakha and D'zentsa ask that you keep an eye on their master as he goes to meet with the Resistance representative in Little Ala Mhigo.

*You arrive in time to witness Widargelt giving Gundobald his answer. Though the old soldier expresses his understanding, saying that fighting is not the only way to serve one's nation, his words leave Widargelt wondering about his own path. Wishing to be alone, he takes his leave and heads for an unknown location. Find him and offer him your support.

*You find Widargelt in contemplation before the mark of the Destroyer. As he relates to you how the Fist of Rhalgr, once the foremost faith among Ala Mhigans, has all but died out in his homeland, the monk finally realizes what he must do. He bids you return with him to Revenant's Toll, where he will share his plans with everyone.

*Before his gathered friends and pupils, Widargelt reveals that he means to go to Gyr Abania on a mission to revive the Fist of Rhalgr. O'tchakha, D'zentsa, and the professor offer to accompany him, and naturally so do you. Overwhelmed by the support, Widargelt expresses his gratitude and determination, and bids you see to your preparations.
===Accepting the quest===
Erik: Ah, [Forename]! Dim though you are, I would swear you possess an innate ability to sense when you are needed. And on that note, I have a task for you.
Erik: Your fellow brute Widargelt—some matter or other weighs heavily on his mind of late. Knowing him, it can only pertain to Ala Mhigo, but the stubborn oaf is determined to keep it pent-up inside. Loath to trouble me with it or some such nonsense, I shouldn't doubt.
Erik: But you, my friend—you are as a {{alternatives|sister|brother}} to him. If there is a {{alternatives|woman|man}} alive in whom he would be willing to confide, it is you. For the hopeless idiot's sake, I bid you go to Revenant's Toll and place yourself at his disposal.

===Speaking with Widargelt in Revenant's Toll===
Widargelt: Good. That will be all for today. You have done well. I am pleased with your progress.

D'zentsa: You always say that, Master. But we're nowhere near where we want to be. Not even close.

O'tchakha: Indeed. And besides, any progress we make, we owe wholly to you.

D'zentsa: Damn right. Without your guidance, we'd be goin' nowhere fast.

Widargelt: My guidance...
Widargelt: [Forename], I am glad to see you. Things are well here, as you can see. But...hmmm...
Widargelt: D'zentsa, O'tchakha, you may go ahead. I would speak with [Forename].
Widargelt: Those two grow stronger every day. Shadows darken their way no more. Their purpose is clear.
Widargelt: Would that I could say the same of mine...
Widargelt: You see, I have received an offer. The Resistance. They ask that I rejoin them. Lead one of their units.
Widargelt: Once, I would have jumped at the chance. But no more. No longer do I live for revenge. You and the professor showed me it is not the way.
Widargelt: So I will turn down the offer. I would focus not on fighting, but rebuilding. But what is within my power? Beyond the battlefield, how can I serve my homeland?
Widargelt: Forgive me. I should not trouble you with this. It is my answer to find.
Widargelt: But first, I will give the Resistance their answer. My thanks for listening, [Forename].

O'tchakha: He still agonizes over it...

D'zentsa: Aye, hardly the state of mind to be in for such an important meeting. Isn't there anything we can do?

O'tchakha: Not us two—his pride will not allow it. But you, [Forename]—he opened up to you just now, did he not? I daresay he will do so again. We're terribly sorry to impose, but could you please follow Master Widargelt? Watch over him in our stead?

Question: Will you watch over Widargelt?

> For you, O'tchakha? Of course.
O'tchakha: Hehe! We are in your debt, [Forename]!

> For you, D'zentsa? Of course.
D'zentsa: Wait, what? Who, me?
D'zentsa: Um, [Forename]? Do you, er...reckon you could look in on Master Widargelt for us?
---

O'tchakha: He is bound for Little Ala Mhigo, I believe.

===Speaking with Widargelt in Little Ala Mhigo===
Widargelt: You would bear witness to my resolve? Very well, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}. Witness me.

Gundobald: Have you made up your mind, then?

Widargelt: I have. Your offer does me great honor. But with respect I must decline. My days of vengeance are over.

Gundobald: I see. That is your decision, and I shan't press you further. Yet I would be lying were I to say I'm not disappointed. With your mastery of the Fist, your contribution to our struggle would have been immeasurable.

Widargelt: I am sorry...

Gundobald: Do not be. Remember, fighting is not the only way to serve one's nation. We each of us must find our own path to walk.

Widargelt: Our own path...
Widargelt: There is a place I would be. I take my leave of you.

Gundobald: 'Tis plain you know Widargelt better than most. If you are indeed his friend, as I mark you to be, I needn't tell you to be there for him.

===Speaking with Widargelt again===
Widargelt: To find me here... You know me too well, [Forename].
Widargelt: The mark of the Destroyer. My people bore it here when the Empire came. The risk was great. But their faith was greater still.
Widargelt: Alas, that faith has all but faded. Wiped away from the motherland. The Garleans suffer not the divine. They allow us not even the solace of worship.
Widargelt: ...By Rhalgr, I know now. That which I can do for Ala Mhigo. All along, there was but the one path.
Widargelt: Let us return to Revenant's Toll. There I will tell all.

===Speaking with Widargelt in Revenant's Toll===
-optional start
Erik: I doubt not that Widargelt is in good hands. After all, who should know a brute better than a fellow brute?

D'zentsa: Glad to see Master worked things out.

O'tchakha: With your help, Master Widargelt has found his path. Thank you, [Forename].
-optional end

Widargelt: Thank you all for coming. I have found my calling. And I would share it with you.
Widargelt: I will go to Gyr Abania. And there revive the Fist of Rhalgr.

D'zentsa: Well then, we're coming with you. We won't let you out of our sight—not until we've repaid the debt, at any rate.

Erik: Suffice to say I too shall come. The lands of Gyr Abania harbor countless mysteries, and such knowledge as I possess will doubtless serve you in your endeavor.

Widargelt: And you, {{alternatives|sister|brother}}. Can I count on you as well?

Question: What will you say?

> I'm with you all the way!
> I'm not feeling up to it.
O'tchakha: Wh-What!? But [Forename], it would be unthinkable without you! Please reconsider!
---

Widargelt: I am glad. Your presence gives me heart. The mission will not be easy. But I will not rest until I succeed. And the Fist of Rhalgr is returned to the land. This I swear.

Erik: On that inspiring note, I shall go and make ready.
...And Widargelt—pray do not forget what we discussed.

Widargelt: We will depart anon. Pray see to your preparations, [Forename].

System: The next monk quest will be available from Widargelt upon reaching level 63.
System: The requirements for undertaking subsequent quests can be reviewed in your journal.
{{Dialogue|<nowiki>
-optional start
'''Alisaie:''' Jifuya can't be the only one here with a mortal fear of Yotsuyu. She tormented these people.

'''Gosetsu:''' That her mere presence should sow such strife...

'''Yugiri:''' Lord Hien and Master Alphinaud look troubled... Something is afoot.

'''Alphinaud:''' It is as Lord Hien says. The Empire is on the move. And we, as ever, find ourselves on the back foot...
-optional end

===Accepting the quest===
-cutscene start
'''Hien:''' While you were out searching for Jifuya, we received word from our shinobi allies: an imperial airship has been sighted over Doman soil.
'''Hien:''' Our visitors' objective remains unclear. It may be another attempt to recover Yotsuyu... or a prelude to invasion.
'''Hien:''' Either way, the craft reportedly advances at speed, and appears bound for Castrum Fluminis. I mean to go there and ascertain their intent.
'''Hien:''' If we ride out in force, it will only end one way, so we shall keep our numbers to a minimum. Yugiri, [Forename]—can I count on you?

'''Yugiri:''' Yes, my lord.

'''Alphinaud:''' Alisaie and I would fain play our part as well. We will not stand idly by while a common foe threatens the lands of our friends and allies.

'''Hien:''' We would be glad of the help. You are acquainted with Hakuro, I believe? Then I bid you seek him out and assist in maintaining order in the enclave.
'''Hien:''' When the people see an imperial airship, they are liable to panic. I would have you reassure them, and, should it come to it, aid in their evacuation.

'''Alphinaud:''' Very well. We shall depart at once. Do take care.

'''Gosetsu:''' What of me, my lord?

'''Hien:''' The Empire may well be after Yotsuyu. You are to remain here and guard her until my return.

'''Gosetsu:''' ...As you wish. Pray stay close to [Forename] and Yugiri.

'''Hien:''' Well, well... ''Guard duty'' and not a breath of protest. Now I have seen it all.
'''Hien:''' To Castrum Fluminis, then. Let us find out what the Empire's game is.
-quest accepted
-cutscene end

-optional start
'''Yugiri:''' Doma is ill-equipped to deal with an aerial offensive. Should the Empire be so minded, the Xaela's flying mounts would be our only hope.

'''Alisaie:''' If necessary, we will evacuate the civilians into the mountains.

'''Alphinaud:''' [Forename], should you not be with Lord Hien at Castrum Fluminis?
-optional end

===Speaking with Hien at Castrum Fluminis===
'''Hien:''' The area is secure. Whatever our visitors' purpose, they plainly believe they can achieve it alone.
'''Hien:''' The craft should come into view at any moment. Let us await them inside the castrum.

-voiced cutscene start
''The party sees smoke coming up from the airship.''

'''Hien:''' A smoke signal...? Thoughts, Yugiri?

'''Yugiri:''' In former times, such signals were used to announce the coming of an emissary of peace—in Doma, at least. But could that truly be their intent?

'''Hien:''' Who can say?
'''Hien:''' Whatever they want, we cannot simply blast them out of the sky—not when they were so gracious as to honor one of our ''cherished'' traditions. I would not have it said that we Domans want for propriety.

'''Yugiri:''' Then I shall go and reconnoiter.

'''Hien:''' Nay, that won't be necessary. We will meet them openly.
'''Hien:''' I would welcome this student of Doman history in person, whomsoever he or she may be...

'''Yugiri:''' As you wish, my lord. I shall arrange for a signal of our own to be fired in answer.
-cutscene end
-voiced cutscene start
'''Asahi:''' Well! That we should be received by the lord of Doma himself!

'''Hien:''' I but afford an emissary of peace the courtesy he is due.
'''Hien:''' Welcome to Doma, my lord...?

'''Asahi:''' Ah, where are my manners? I am Asahi sas Brutus, ambassador plenipotentiary of Garlemald.

'''Yugiri:''' He is heir to the Naeuri clan... and Yotsuyu's stepbrother.

'''Asahi:''' It seems I need not introduce myself—not in the presence of the famed Yugiri Mistwalker. Your skills as a shinobi are known far and wide, my lady.
'''Asahi:''' It is true—the former acting viceroy is my sister. Yet, bonds of kinship aside, we have precious little in common. As will soon become plain, I come not to sow strife, but to end it.
'''Asahi:''' I am of the Populares, a collective which represents the interests of the common man. Long have we labored to bring about reform to the Empire's provincial policy.
'''Asahi:''' Happily for us, our master acknowledges the need for change. Indeed, His Radiance, Emperor Varis zos Galvus personally sanctioned this mission, granting me the authority to speak with his voice.
'''Asahi:''' To negotiate peace with Doma.

'''Hien:''' Well then, we have much to discuss.
'''Hien:''' Will you accompany me to my hall?

'''Asahi:''' Gladly, my lord!
-cutscene end

-optional start
'''Yugiri:''' ''Peace''... After all they have done. Never has the word rung more hollow.

'''Maxima:''' Lord Hien is magnanimous in victory. Given our nations' troubled history, we did not expect such hospitality.

'''Asahi:''' I say, do I stand in the presence of the fabled eikon-slayer? What an honor.
-optional end

===Speaking with Hien===
'''Hien:''' We shall escort our guests across the river to the enclave.
'''Hien:''' Yugiri, pray go on ahead to the Yuzuka Manor docks and see that the ferries are ready.

-optional start
'''Maxima:''' I have read much about the architecture and geology of Doma... Words do not do it justice.

'''Asahi:''' Such scenes of devastation greeted us on our journey here... The bitter wages of war.

'''Hien:''' Upon disembarking, we will proceed directly to my hall, where we may enjoy some privacy.
-optional end

===Speaking with Yugiri at the mercantile docks===
'''Yugiri:''' Lord Hien and I will accompany the imperial delegation on the first ferry.
'''Yugiri:''' When you are ready, speak with the boatman and join us on the other side

-optional start
'''Alphinaud:''' So it's to be a peace negotiation. I am curious to see what the ambassador brings to the discussion table.

'''Alisaie:''' The residents took the news of the imperial delegation well enough. It should be business as usual.

'''Hakuro:''' Thanks to Master Alphinaud and Mistress Alisaie's assurances, the people are reacting calmly to imperial presence.

'''Yugiri:''' Lord Hien has requested that Master Alphinaud and Mistress Alisaie also be present at the negotiation.
-optional end

===Speaking with Hien at the Doman Enclave===
'''Hien:''' There you are, [Forename]. So, first things first: what do you think of the enclave? I must say, I'm quite proud of what my countrymen have accomplished in the time.
'''Hien:''' We even have an aetheryte now, courtesy of the Onishishu. Be sure and attune to it, would you? Once it has the Warrior of Light's seal of approval, people might actually start using the thing.
'''Hien:''' But on to the matter at hand: the ambassador and his retinue are at my hall, taking their ease ahead of the negotiations. I want you there when the talking starts.
'''Hien:''' It will serve to send a message to the Empire that Eorzea and Doma stand united. I am not normally one for hollow posturing, but in this game of nations, such gestures carry weight.
'''Hien:''' Oh, and should you feel uneasy about speaking for the Scions, Alphinaud and Alisaie will also be there. You need only eat, drink, and look imposing. Say you'll come.

Question: What will you say?

> I'll be there.
'''Hien:''' I knew I could count on you.

> Oh, very well.
'''Hien:''' It promises to be a dull affair, to be sure, but you have survived far worse.
---

'''Hien:''' When you are ready, come and join me at my humble abode, the Kienkan. The guardsman will see you in.

===Speaking with the guardsman===
'''Kienkan Guardsman:''' Lord Hien is expecting you. May I show you in?

-voiced cutscene start
:[[File:Storm on the Horizon Meeting.png|thumb|Asahi pleads his case.]]
'''Asahi:''' On behalf of my delegation, I offer you my humblest thanks. Never did I imagine that I would meet the gallant and noble lord of Doma himself, nor be welcomed into his magnificent hall.

'''Hien:''' You'll forgive me if we forgo the pleasantries. You say you are come to negotiate peace.
'''Hien:''' Unless I am mistaken, such negotiations are typically conducted between ''sovereign'' nations. I was not aware that the Emperor had recognized Doma's sovereignty.

'''Asahi:''' His Radiance has yet to do so, that much is true. Know, however, that he has expressed willingness to cede Doma to her ancestral masters and treat with her as a friend.
'''Asahi:''' Since the days of Emperor Solus, the Empire has aggressively expanded its territory.
'''Asahi:''' While you may not agree with our founding father's policy of expansion, I believe there is room for discussion on the matter of his lifelong goal—to rid the world of eikons.
'''Asahi:''' Eikons are a blight upon this star. They cannot be suffered to exist. This you know as well as we. In his wisdom, Emperor Varis wishes to explore the possibility of an alliance to combat this common threat.
'''Asahi:''' On the condition that Doma renounces summoning and pledges to police the Kojin's practice of it, His Radiance would extend the hand of friendship.

'''Hien:''' Doma has never shown any appetite for summoning. And it should go without saying that we will address any threat to our people, eikon or otherwise.
'''Hien:''' With regard to the Kojin, I must stress that they only resorted to summoning under extreme provocation. When the Ruby Sea was at peace, and their sacred relics safe, they looked not to their kami for protection.
'''Hien:''' Yet even now there are certain parties who would destabilize the region with ill-conceived military forays. Unless they alter their course, we cannot hope to be rid of eikons.

'''Asahi:''' ...Quite. I can but apologize.
'''Asahi:''' In seeking to eliminate eikons, the Empire creates them. 'Tis an irony among ironies. One with which the people of Eorzea are well-acquainted, I am told.

'''Alphinaud:''' Indeed, many summonings are the result of persecution, the weak being driven to call upon the divine for deliverance from the strong. So it was in Ala Mhigo—the bitter fruit of Garlean oppression.

'''Asahi:''' A tragic state of affairs. If we are to put an end to summoning once and for all, it shall not be through might, but harmony. Yet we continue to repeat our mistakes, oblivious to the lessons of history.
'''Asahi:''' My comrades and I would change all that. We Populares have campaigned long and hard for a shift in imperial policy, and at last the Emperor has seen fit to lend us an ear.
'''Asahi:''' Alas, there is a faction within Garlemald that would obstruct our every attempt at reform. A collection of pure-blooded Garleans who seek to consolidate their own supremacy: the Optimates.
'''Asahi:''' Lest you wonder, theirs was the hand that loosed our forces on the Confederacy. 'Twas a regrettable incident, one that flies in the face of everything we believe, and I swear to do all in my power to prevent a reoccurrence.

'''Hien:''' That would be most welcome. But if I may speak plain—if the Empire itself is not of one mind, how can we be certain that any peace we negotiate will be honored?

'''Asahi:''' I cannot blame you for doubting us. Indeed, I should find it strange if you did not. And so, in the name of building trust, I would like to make a proposal: a prisoner exchange.

'''Hien:''' Hm...

'''Asahi:''' Under Garlean rule, no few Domans were conscripted into the imperial army. We would repatriate them in return for those of ours you captured in the recent conflict.
'''Asahi:''' Naturally, any exchange would include the acting viceroy.

'''Hien:''' Yotsuyu? What makes you think we have her?

'''Asahi:''' Forgive me, my lord. Was it not your wish to speak plain? Let us not play games. I desire only to work to our mutual benefit.
'''Asahi:''' The Optimates tried—and failed—to take my sister by force. I would succeed by peaceable means, thereby strengthening my party's hand. 'Twould be a lie to say I would not also be glad of my sister's safe return.

'''Hien:''' A fellow plain-speaker. How refreshing. Very well. Your proposal has merit, but I will need time to consider it.

'''Asahi:''' Of course, my lord. May we remain in Doma until you have come to a decision?

'''Hien:''' You shall be our honored guests.
'''Hien:''' Yugiri, I leave the ambassador and his retinue in your care. See that they are well looked after.

'''Asahi:''' You have our gratitude, Lord Hien. We shall look forward to your answer.
-cutscene end

-optional start
'''Hakuro:''' Whatever Lord Hien's decision should be, I shall abide by it. Yet... I would be glad to welcome my lost brothers back to Doma.

'''Alisaie:''' That the Empire should send Yotsuyu's stepbrother of all people... I wonder how he feels, a son of Doma returning home to speak for the oppressors his countrymen drove out.

'''Alphinaud:''' The fact that there are two opposing factions at work in Garlemald complicates matters. Even assuming Asahi and his associates can be trusted, what of the others?
-optional end

===Speaking with Hien===
-cutscene start
'''Hien:''' Well, that was... unexpected.

'''Alisaie:''' You can say that again. I still don't know quite what to make of it all. But on the surface, a prisoner exchange does seem a good way to begin. The question is, can they be trusted?

'''Hien:''' Hm. They had naught to gain by divulging the details of their internal divisions. As it stands, we have no reason to doubt them.
'''Hien:''' But the ambassador's mention of Yotsuyu left me ill at ease. It made his grand talk of peace seem uncannily like a lengthy preamble.

'''Alphinaud:''' You think this might all be a ruse to facilitate her retrieval?

'''Hien:''' Perhaps. Though I cannot fathom why they would go to such lengths. Yotsuyu may have been the acting viceroy, but she is not Garlean, nor even highborn. Her value must presumably lie in what she knows...
'''Hien:''' ...Which brings us to the little matter of her memory loss. In her present condition, she would not yield any worthwhile intelligence. Nor is she worth much as a bargaining piece.
'''Hien:''' Alphinaud, you are well acquainted with the Empire's methods. I would have your thoughts on this matter.

'''Alphinaud:''' My knowledge is at your disposal, Lord Hien. While the ambassador's proposal is appealing in principle, it would be remiss of us not to give it due scrutiny.

'''Hien:''' Indeed. Though it seems to me I have little choice but to accept regardless. With so many of our brothers and sisters languishing in imperial camps, I cannot well turn my back on a chance to secure their repatriation. Only the kami know when I will be afforded another.
'''Hien:''' ...But ere we continue, shall we excuse these two? I fear what follows will bore them to tears.

'''Alisaie:''' I was just about show myself out as it happens. Come on, [Forename]—let's leave Alphinaud to dispense his copious knowledge.

'''Alphinaud:''' Someone is still sore from being made to watch at Sakazuki...
'''Alphinaud:''' Go on and keep Alisaie company. We are safe enough for now.
-cutscene end

-optional start
'''Hien:''' You've more than earned a rest, my friend. Leave the interminable bits to us.
'''Alphinaud:''' Worry not, [Forename], we shall take care of the rest. Go on and keep Alisaie company.
-optional end

===Speaking with Alisaie===
'''Alisaie:''' <sigh> A chance to relax at last.
'''Alisaie:''' I know when I'm out of my depth, [Forename].
'''Alisaie:''' Though no weapons are drawn, a negotiation is no less a battle, and the stakes can be every bit as high. One misplaced word and people could die. It takes someone with a cool head, and I'll be the first to admit that's not me.
'''Alisaie:''' So we're left with the eternal question...
What to do while they prattle on?
The '''Masked Carnivale''' is a series of solo combat challenges for {{Blue Mage}} [[Blue Mage]]s that is unlocked as part of the [[Blue Mage Quests|Blue Mage Job Quests]]. Many battles are optional, but some are required to progress in job quests.
__TOC__
==Unlock==
*Complete [[quest]]: {{questlink|feature|The Real Folk Blues}}
*Requirement: Level 50 [[Blue Mage]]
*Starting NPC: [[Maudlin Latool Ja]] in [[Ul'dah - Steps of Thal]] (X:12.5, Y:13.0)

==How to Participate==
Speak with the [[Celestium Attendant]] in [[Ul'dah - Steps of Thal]] (X:11.5 Y:13.2).

==[[Masked_Carnivale_Stages|Stages]]==
The Masked Carnivale is comprised of 32 stages in total. You can view a list of all available stages by speaking with the Celestium attendant. Stages do not need to be completed in numerical order. Many stages consist of multiple separate battles (Acts), although completing an Act does not grant a checkpoint. Note that dying will fail the duty and remove the player from the instance.

Be advised that once you begin a stage, you cannot register or remove active actions.

All stages are level synced and it is not possible to "unsync" any.

The first 25 stages are unlocked automatically, while subsequent stages are unlocked with further progression of blue mage job quests. Stages 26-30 requires {{questlink|feature|Blue Scream of Death}}, Stage 31 requires {{questlink|feature|Master of Mimicry}}, and Stage 32 requires {{questlink|feature|A New Gold Standard}}.
|-
|}

===Tips===
* If the current bonus objectives allow it, then an instant-kill combo ({{action icon|The Ram's Voice}} + {{action icon|Ultravibration}}), or a pseudo-limit-break combo ({{action icon|Off-guard}} + {{action icon|Whistle}} + {{action icon|Moon Flute}} + {{action icon|Final Sting}}) can be used to clear stages quickly and easily.
** Note that the latter combo results in your death, so damage the enemy a bit first to ensure the Final Sting hit will kill. Additionally, the "Brush with Death" debuff it applies will prevent you from using the combo again for 10 minutes.
** If the enemy doesn't allow physical damage, then instead do {{action icon|Toad Oil}} + {{action icon|Peculiar Light}} + {{action icon|Bristle}} + {{action icon|Moon Flute}} + {{action icon|Self-destruct}}.
* The "Enfeeble me Tender" and "Enfeeble me Tenderer" objectives count standard enfeeblements such as {{status effect|Stun}} [[Stun]], as well as unique enfeeblements such as {{action icon|Addle}}, and unusual enfeeblements such as {{status effect|Bleeding}} [[Bleeding]] (from {{action icon|Song of Torment}}) or {{status effect|Windburn}} [[Windburn]] (from {{action icon|Feather Rain}}).
* The "Let's Get Physical" objective will fail upon using any non-damaging action, such as {{action icon|Whistle}}, {{action icon|Off-guard}}, or {{action icon|White Wind}}. Role actions such as {{action icon|Swiftcast}} are also not allowed.
* The "Beginner Spellcasting" and "Advanced Spellcasting" objectives only count spells that are cast during the stage.
** This means that {{action icon|Aetheric Mimicry}} (a rank 4 spell) can be used before the stage to get the buff, without violating the "only rank 1 and 2" restriction of Beginner Spellcasting.
** Role actions such as {{action icon|Addle}} or {{action icon|Sleep}}, which do not have a rank, also do not violate the requirements. Therefore, they can be used freely.
* The following spells count as "fired from the face" for the "Four-faced" and "Eight-faced" objectives:
** {{action icon|Flame Thrower}}
** {{action icon|Aqua Breath}}
** {{action icon|Glower}}
** {{action icon|Level 5 Petrify}}
==Enemy Weaknesses==
[[File:The Masked Carnivale enemy weaknesses1.png|300px|right]]
Many enemies that appear in the Masked Carnivale are weak to a particular element, which can be confirmed when viewing the list of stages. Use this to your advantage and set your actions accordingly.

The elemental weakness of enemies is also indicated by an icon above their display names.

==Results==
[[File:The Masked Carnivale results1.png|300px|right]]
After completing a performance, your clear time, bonuses, and score are displayed.

Bonuses are awarded for fulfilling certain conditions and affect the score.

==Weekly Targets==
[[File:The Masked Carnivale weekly targets1.png|300px|right]]
Weekly targets are available for certain performances, indicated with an icon.

There are three levels of difficulty for weekly targets:
* Novice (blue) - Only requires clearing the stage.
* Moderate (white) - Requires 1 objective in addition to clearing the stage.
* Advanced (gold) - Requires 2-3 objectives in addition to clearing the stage.

To view the conditions, select a performance with a weekly target, marked with an icon. This information can also be viewed in the Timers menu.
===Weekly schedule===
Weekly targets are not random - instead, there are 20 distinct pre-built weeks, which loop in order.

Notably, only stages 02 through 19 (excluding stage 05) are eligible to appear in weeklies. Most objectives can appear, with the exceptions of "Mastery of Ice", "Total Mastery", "Eight-Faced", "Hooked on a Healing", and hidden objectives.

Currently, it is '''week {{#expr: (((({{#time: U}} - {{#time: U|July 18, 2023 08:00:00}}) div 86400) div 7) mod 20) + 1}} ({{#switch:{{#time: l}}
* The numbering here uses the week of July 17 - 24, 2023 as a starting point (the first week following [[Patch 6.45]]). This is because the Masked Carnivale's weekly objectives directly correspond to the [[Blue Mage Log]]'s weekly targets, and Patch 6.45 was the most recent update to the latter.

The schedule of objectives for the 20 weeks is as follows:
