Eorzea Time (ET) is the measure of in-game time provided to the player via a clock found in the "Server Info" HUD element.<ref name="uiguide">https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/uiguide/know/know-hud/hud_timedisplay.html - UI Guide (Square Enix).
Eorzea Time affects the spawning of Unspoiled Nodes and Rank S Elite Marks, and the A Realm Reborn Sightseeing Logs all require specific times, as does one Stormblood sightseeing spot. Timers created from the Gathering Log will automatically set themselves to one bell (hour) before the node spawns, or as described in the table, approximately 3 minutes real time. Eorzea Time can also affect the music and the lighting of the world. Overworld zones and cities usually have different background music at night compared to day. Older outdoor dungeons may have different lighting depending on the time of day, although the lighting in most dungeons is unaffected by the current Eorzean time.

Nighttime occurs from 6PM to 5:59AM ET (12 Eorzean hours). There are very few gameplay systems that are tied to daytime vs. nighttime. However, the most prominent uses of nighttime as a mechanic are in The Hunt system as conditions for spawning Rank S Elite Marks and in The Forbidden Land, Eureka where some enemies, classified as Ashkin, only spawn during night, which affect the availability to spawn certain Notorious Monsters, as those enemies need to be defeated. In addition, the some weekly Challenge Logs for Eureka require that a certain number of Ashkin be defeated. In Occult Crescent, Ashkin spawn in a more restricted 5.5-Eorzean hour window, from 10:30PM to 3:59AM ET.

TOCRIGHT

FATEs (Full Active Time Events) are dynamic scenarios, often battles, that appear around Eorzea. FATEs involve boss battles, escort missions and other events. Players can complete these events for experience, gil and Grand Company seals or Bicolor Gemstones. Occasionally players will also receive items for successful completion of a FATE at gold medal. FATE credit is shared amongst all members of a party. Group up for better chances at maximum credit.

Basics
List of FATEs
To locate a FATE, look for FATE indicators that randomly appear on your map. To join a FATE, simply enter the FATE radius (blue circle) on your mini map and attempt to complete the FATE objectives. There are no limits to the number of players that can participate in a FATE at a time. If the player's level is too high, they will be asked to level sync down. FATEs can be completed by finishing the on-screen objectives within the time limit. Players are rewarded with experience and gil when a FATE is completed.
*Enemies that are the objective of a FATE will have a special icon next to their names:

Types of FATEs
Kill Enemies
Monster FATES require the players to defeat waves and waves of monsters. On your map, they show up as icons with a crossed sword, axe, and spear. Players can increase their rating by tagging or first hitting monsters, doing damage to the monsters and healing and reviving other players. To obtain participation for a monster slain, players need to get on the aggro table (pops up on the left) for that monster when it is slain.

*Easiest way to achieve Gold Medal rating is by tagging monsters with instant cast spells, damage them with AoE abilities, gaining enmity for multiple mobs and healing players with high enmity.

Kill Boss
Boss FATEs require the players to defeat one large and powerful boss monster. On your map, they show up as icons with monster maw. Players can increase their rating by doing damage to the boss, tanking hits from the boss and healing other players.

Large-scale FATEs
These FATEs, also referred to as world bosses or rare boss FATEs by players, have prerequisite weather or completing other FATE chains. Most level 70 and lower world boss FATEs (except Behemoth) are not visible on the main map, and must be located on the minimap display.

Notorious Monster
Eureka FATEs
A type of boss fate only found in eureka. Often abbreviated as NM.

Some types of Eureka FATEs are called "Elemental Conflicts" (i.e. Happy Bunny FATEs), wherein players defeat a few waves of enemies while protecting the resident Happy Bunnies. Completing these allows players to search for hidden treasure. For more information, see here.

Chase
A one-of-a-kind type of boss fate, fate-path involves chasing a boss to a destination marked with a grey version of the FATE icon: Players must defeat the boss before it reaches the destination, or the FATE is a failure.

Collect
Collect FATEs require the players to collect and turn in Key Items. On your map, they show up as bag icons along with a small bag that indicate the location of the FATE NPC. Players can increase their rating by turning in FATE items before the timer hits 0. You can also obtain items by defeating the FATE mobs that spawn continuously.

*Players can easily obtain the Gold Medal rating by picking up the FATE items on the ground and handing them to the FATE NPC.

Defend
In these FATEs, players have to defend certain objects/NPCs from destruction/defeat for a specified amount of time. Waves of enemies will attempt to destroy/defeat these objects/NPCs and players must defeat these foes. If the objects/NPCs are destroyed/defeated, players fail the FATE. In the case of Defending NPCs, they can be healed by players and this can be critical to succeeding in the FATE. Objects cannot be healed, and therefore those FATEs benefit most from a tank to immediately grab aggro from the enemies.

Escort
In these FATEs, players need to escort an NPC or multiple NPCs from one place to another. The NPC will travel from point A to point B, players must defend them from incoming monsters. If the NPC is killed, players fail the FATE.

*Note that the HP of NPCs will regenerate outside of combat.

Rebuild
These special, limited-time FATEs are non-combat activities only accessible in The Firmament and Cosmic Exploration zones. They become available upon achieving server-specific milestones in the development of the respective zones. Once a Rebuild FATE is completed once in the server, it becomes permanently inaccessible.

Rebuild FATEs in the Firmament are no longer available after the conclusion of the Ishgardian Restoration, but Fêtes are similar activities that are a permanent feature.

Shared FATE
Shared FATE
The Shared FATE system was introduced in Shadowbringers with 5.0 and carried forward in later expansions. Instead of company seal Company Seals, players receive bicolor gemstone Bicolor Gemstones for participation in FATEs in these zones.

Hot Spots
Players occasionally group up and farm FATEs for experience. Generally this is done while waiting on queues or while simultaneously working on various Relic Weapons. Experience per hour is quite poor from FATEs alone.<br>
Various FATE spots emerge for different levels.

Tips and Tricks
*Players do not need to stick around for the entire FATE. If you feel comfortable that you have done enough to receive full exp for the fate, you can leave early to join another FATE that may have popped. For Collect FATEs this is typically 6-8 of the items.
**You must be in the same zone as the FATE when it ends to receive any credit, however. Going into a queue or leaving for another zone will forfeit any contribution.
*Make sure to join a party. Often if you shout in an area that you are "looking for group" someone will pick you up. You can also use the Party Finder.
*By being in a party, you will not only increase your likelihood of getting the gold rank for FATE completion, but also allows you to share everyone's experience as monsters are killed.
*Tanks having trouble getting the gold rank for FATE completion should turn on their tank stance and use their area-of-effect attacks if there are multiple enemies.
*Healers having trouble receiving gold rank FATE completion can spam their area-of-effect healing spells in a party.

Additional Stormblood+ FATE Mechanics
Experience Points Bonus
FATEs that appear in Stormblood (and later) areas will, on occasion, offer a 50% bonus to EXP awarded upon completion. As of Dawntrail, these bonuses also apply to the amount of bicolor gemstone Bicolor Gemstones earned, but not company seal Company Seals earned from Stormblood FATEs.

FATEs offering bonus EXP can be confirmed via the map or the Recommendations list.

Twist of Fate
A special enemy called the Forlorn Maiden may appear over the course of any given FATE. Players will see the chat message "The smell of death has drawn a Forlorn maiden to the battlefield!" when one spawns, and "The Forlorn maiden dissipates..." when it is defeated.

In very rare instances a significantly larger, tougher variant called The Forlorn may appear instead.

By defeating the Forlorn Maiden or The Forlorn, all players who participated in the FATE and received a rating will be granted the Twist of Fate status.
* Players will be granted the status even if the FATE ends in failure so long as the Forlorn Maiden was defeated.

Players under the effect of the Twist of Fate status will receive 15% increased EXP rewards and 25% increased Bicolor Gemstones upon completing the FATE in which the Forlorn Maiden was defeated. The status then persists and grants a further 50% increased EXP and Bicolor Gemstones for a subsequent FATE players participate or receive a rating in.
* The effect of this status will apply even if the FATEs participated in end in failure.
* The status' effect does not apply to EXP gained from defeating enemies.
* The status' effect stacks with other bonuses that apply to FATE completion EXP, including a subsequent Twist of Fate buff.
* The Twist of Fate status from The Forlorn grants a significantly greater EXP bonus (+250%) than that from a Forlorn Maiden.

The effect has no expiry time limit. However, players will lose the buff if they leave the zone in any way.

Achievements
FATE completion is associated with the following achievements:

achievement table header

Additionally, Shared FATEs are also associated with several achievements, and many FATEs award achievements for their completion (39 as of patch 7.0).
Experience Points, or exp EXP, are a system that drives the advancement of players in the game. All Disciples of War, Magic, the Hand, and the Land receive EXP for a wide variety of activities. Upon reaching a certain threshold, players advance by one level. Upon reaching level 100 in a class (or in the case of Blue Mage, level 80), players will no longer earn further EXP from any activities. Various ways to boost EXP gain are also available to players, as well as several one-time sources of EXP.

Sources of EXP
Disciples of War and Magic
Disciples of War and Magic earn their EXP primarily through combat activity, such as defeating enemies, participating in FATEs, and completing dungeons. The following is a non-exhaustive list in no particular order of activities that grant EXP to Disciples of War and Magic:

* Defeating Enemies
** Note: as of Patch 6.0, regular enemies inside dungeons no longer grant EXP. Instead, the equivalent EXP is granted upon defeating the bosses.
* Completing Duty Roulettes once daily for the bonus.
* Participating in FATEs
* Participating in PvP
** This includes Crystalline Conflict, Frontline, and Rival Wings, but excludes Custom Matches.
* Completing Main Scenario Quests, once per character
* Completing Class, Job, and Role Quests, once per character
* Completing Side Quests, once per character
* Completing combat Tribal Quests, 12 per day
* Completing certain Challenge Log entries, once per week
* Completing class Hunting Log entries, once per class
** Jobs introduced after A Realm Reborn do not have a class Hunting Log.
* Completing daily Mark Bills for The Hunt; different sets for each expansion.
* Completing Sightseeing Log entries, once per character
* Completing Deep Dungeons
* Participating in Field Operations in Bozja.
* Completing Battlecraft Levequests
* Completing Guildhests
** Most classes also earn a one-time EXP bonus when completing a Guildhest for the first time, with the exception of jobs introduced with Shadowbringers and later.

Disciples of the Hand and the Land
Disciples of the Hand and the Land earn their EXP through crafting and gathering activities respectively. The following is a non-exhaustive list in no particular order of activities that grant EXP to Disciples of the Hand and the Land:

* Synthesizing Recipes from the Crafting Log
** A one-time EXP bonus is awarded the first time a recipe is crafted (recipes in Master Recipe Tomes don't count).
* Gathering Items from the Gathering Log
** A one-time EXP bonus is awarded the first time an item is gathered (items in Tomes of Regional Folklore don't count).
* Completing Tradecraft or Fieldcraft Levequests
* Completing crafting or gathering Tribal Quests, 12 per day
* Completing Grand Company Supply and Provision Missions, 1 per class per day
* Completing Class Quests, once per character
** Completing Crystarium Deliveries, Studium Deliveries and Wachumeqimeqi Deliveries, once per character
* Completing certain Challenge Log entries, once per week
* Turning in Collectables
** Completing Custom Deliveries, 12 items weekly
** Participating in the Restoration of Ishgard
*** EXP is lowered to 1000 per turn-in after Level 80.
* Participating in Ocean Fishing (FSH Fisher only).

Bonuses to EXP
Quite a number of bonuses can be applied to increase EXP earned. Most of these bonuses stack additively with one another, unless otherwise noted in the sections below.

Meals
Meals can be consumed to gain well fed Well Fed, which grants +3% bonus to EXP for 30 minutes in addition to the meal's specific effects. The duration can be extended to 60 minutes by consuming multiple servings of the same food. Only one meal bonus can be active at a time. This bonus applies to EXP gained from defeating enemies, synthesizing recipes, and gathering items.

Certain meals from special events will grant a +4% bonus to EXP instead. For example: Fat Choco Choco.

Armoury Bonus
The Armoury Bonus is a bonus applied to EXP gained by combat classes when below the level of your highest class. The bonus is +100% for levels 1-89, reducing to +50% for levels 90-100. Despite what the in-game Active Help entry implies, this bonus does not otherwise change depending on the discrepancy between levels. This bonus only applies to defeating enemies and FATE rewards. Other sources of experience, such as completing Duty Roulettes, are not affected.

Notably, the buffs "The Heat of Battle" and "Squadron Battle Manual" are multiplicative with the Armoury Bonus, on top of its normal additive effects. For instance, a class with the Armoury Bonus and The Heat of Battle II (10%) will earn 120% experience: 100% from the Armoury Bonus, 10% from The Heat of Battle II acting multiplicatively (as 10% of 100% is 10%), and 10% from The Heat of Battle II acting additively.

Rested EXP
Rested EXP is gained by resting or logging out in areas designated as sanctuaries. Sanctuaries are typically areas around an Aetheryte as well as City-States, such as Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul'dah. Sanctuary status is indicated by a crescent moon symbol to the right of the experience bar. Rested EXP provides a 50% bonus to EXP gained from defeating enemies, synthesizing recipes, and gathering items. Because of this, rested EXP is consumed as a percentage of the bar, rather than a flat amount.

The current rested bonus is displayed on top of the experience bar. The dark orange portion indicates how much EXP can be earned before the bonus fades. If the bar is blue, it indicates that the bonus will carry over to the next level. It takes 7 days to gain a full bar of rested EXP, at which point no more will be accrued.

Free Company Actions are buffs granted by a Free Company to its members for 24 hours, some of which can increase EXP gained. Up to two Free Company Actions can be active at any one time.
The Road to 90
Some Worlds with lower populations are occasionally designated as Preferred Worlds. This designation gives characters newly created on those worlds a passive buff called the road to 90 The Road to 90, which applies to any class below level 90. The buff provides a multiplicative 100% bonus to all sources of EXP, calculated after applying any other bonuses. For more information about Preferred Worlds, please refer to the Play Guide entry on population balancing. The buff was during the first day of early access for Stormblood (patch 4.0) as The Road to 60.
The Skatay Range is a large, snow capped mountain range that divides Dalmasca and Othard. The mountain range is inhospitable to all but the hardiest and is often the final resting place of those who seek to cross it on foot. The forests at the foot of the mountain are the home of the Veena clan of Viera. These forests were also used as a strategic point to halt an invasion by the Garlean Empire, where the natives used the thick underbrush for cover and participated in guerilla warfare. Unable to deal with this, the Empire was never able to take this land, and therefore their occupation was never considered truly complete.

The Circle of Knowing was an organization formed by Louisoix Leveilleur in the year 1562 of the Sixth Astral Era. Tired of The Forum's unwillingness to act in the impending war with Garlemald, Louisoix secretly gathered his twelve greatest pupils, most of whom were Archons, and formed the group with a single missive: "the salvation of Eorzea." Sending his students into the city-states, the members of the Circle of Knowing hoped to reinstate the Grand Companies so the Eorzean Alliance would have a means to fight back against the Garlean Empire.

History
The members of the Circle of Knowing made their way to each of the city-states of Eorzea to try to convince them to rebuild the Grand Companies and unite as one to stand against the coming invasion, as the city-states of the Fifth Astral Era had done more than fifteen hundred years ago. Since the Garlean Empire had retreated behind Baelsar's Wall to safety, Eorzea's city-states had lost their common enemy, and had returned to their territorial disputes both with each other and the Beast Tribes of their respective lands. The leaders of each city-state were wary of the Circle of Knowing and hesitant to listen to what they had to say. This would change rapidly when the Beastmen began summoning their gods, or rather, the entities that would come to be known as Primals.

The Primal Threat
The "Primal threat" began in Thanalan, where the Amalj'aa of Paglth'an called upon Ifrit to retaliate against the members of Amajina & Sons Mineral Concern, who had been digging in the Amalj'aa's ancestral lands of Zanr'ak. While the Lord of the Inferno was attacking there, the Amalj'aa attacked the various outposts near Ul'dah, slaughtering the underprepared troops there. With this, they had reclaimed the land as their own. Attacks by the other Beast Tribes began happening in a similar manner all across Eorzea, with increasing frequency, and the people of the city-states were at a loss on how to handle the supposed gods. Fortunately, the Circle of Knowing, having been the first to notice the sudden environmental decay of the lands affected by the summonings, were able to share what they knew with the leaders of Eorzea's city-states. The Circle had also observed the Aether slowly disappearing from the land with each new summoning. They reached out to their acquaintances, the Students of Baldesion, to divine how the Beast Tribes could have possibly come into the knowledge of aetherial manipulation on the scale of summoning.

Eventually, their search would reveal the existence of supposedly "shadowless" beings known as the Ascians, and the members of the Circle of Knowing were finally able to present Eorzea's leaders with information and evidence on how the Beastmen were performing their rituals. With this, the city-states and the Adventurers who were battling these entities now had a means to fight back more effectively. The Circle of Knowing had proven their trustworthiness, and each city-state acted upon their council, reforming the Grand Companies to act as a united front against all who would try to take their land from them.

Three-Sided Struggle
With the Garleans resuming their campaign into Eorzea, and the increase in Primal activity that seemed to coincide with their invasion, the Grand Companies were struggling to maintain ground. Louisoix and the other members of the Circle of Knowing offered a solution: Employ the use of Adventurers in a two-tiered offense. While the Grand Companies were handling the Garlean forces, the Adventurers would be able to handle the Primals. However, Beast Tribes that had previously not summoned their gods were now doing so, further increasing the pressure on the people of Eorzea. Under the guidance of the Circle of Knowing, they were able to at least quell the tide for the time being, however things were growing increasingly tense.

The Coming Calamity
The war between the Garlean Empire and Eorzea raged for some time. Thanks to the Circle of Knowing, the Adventurers were able to infiltrate the Empire's Castrum Novum and learn of Project Meteor. Though they were able to dismantle the "Lunar Transmitter", they learned from Nael van Darnus that his plan was already complete, and Dalamud would fall regardless of their attempts to stop it. The Circle of Knowing was able to provide evidence linking the moon to the Allagan Empire, and surmised that the Garlean Empire must have knowledge of a means to control the satellite. Eventually, they were able to track Nael van Darnus to Coerthas, amongst the floating rubble beneath Dalamud. The Eorzean Alliance sent a group of Adventurers to assassinate the legatus, hoping to stop the descent of the moon. The Circle of Knowing would, however, observe that even after the death of Nael van Darnus, Dalamud continued to fall.

Louisoix, the leader of the Circle of Knowing, finally came to the last-ditch attempt to save the land: fervent prayer to The Twelve in the hopes that they would be able to entreat with a higher power to stop the fall of Dalamud. While the idea was met with skepticism and challenge, the realization that there were few other options remaining settled over the Eorzean Alliance. The members of the Circle of Knowing, as well as the various peoples of Eorzea made their way to the various Marks of The Twelve to offer their prayers for safety. During this time, the Garlean Empire made ready for a final assault on Eorzea.

Finally, the conflict came, and the Battle of Carteneau began. Louisoix began enacting his plan to summon The Twelve while the members of the Circle of Knowing continued to offer prayer at the Marks. In the events that followed, Louisoix would manage to stop the elder wyrm Bahamut and save Eorzea, though at the cost of his life. The surviving members of the Circle would join with the members of the Path of the Twelve and go on to form the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
Preface
Blessed By Gods And Forged By Heroes
Comprised of Aldenard, the westernmost of the Three Great Continents, and its surrounding islands, the realm of Eorzea has, throughout history, been the cradle of several unique civilizations. Towering mountains dominate the north, their peaks forever lashed with icy winds; to the south, a bleak expanse of unforgiving desert holds sway. Yet these inhospitable lands hold irresistible lure for man and monster alike, for wide and deep flow the currents of aether, and rich are the veins of power-infused crystal.

This encyclopedia is a labor of love—a love for Eorzea. It is a compilation of knowledge of our forebears. Of their histories and legends. Of their fables and folktales. It is a chronicle left by those who strove to unlock Eorzea’s myriad mysteries that all who followed might better understand this great realm. It is dedicated to those who call Eorzea their home and to those who will do so one day. It is dedicated to those who would give their blood to see the realm persevere. It is dedicated to you, the reader, with hope that the knowledge contained within its pages will serve as a guide on our never-ending journey to a better tomorrow.

A New Era
In this both harsh and vibrant region, the people of Eorzea have carved out their histories from within a cycle of prosperous “Astral” and disastrous “Umbral” eras. And though the land has but recently emerged from yet another age of decline—the Seventh Umbral Era—the skies remain dark. On the eastern border, the Garlean Empire masses its troops for invasion, while the native beastmen tribes summon their deities, the otherworldly primals. The threats facing Eorzea will not easily be overcome.

The Brightest Burning Candle
The life of an adventurer is the pursuit of fortune and the pursuit of fame the devotion of oneself to seeking out danger and glory wherever they might lie. Only the most intrepid and dauntless of souls will endeavor to embark upon such a journey.

It is not without warrant, then, to assume it will ultimately be an adventurer who steps from the shadows of obscurity to defend Eorzea from those who would see Her harmed—that it will be his or her tales of bravery and daring that are sung by bards for ages to come. This adventurer, and every adventurer to have heretofore lived and died in our realm, are the true heroes of this story—Eorzea’s story.
