| description = Your latest odd job commission brings you together with one Y'nazqha, a gleaner who finds herself in possession of an unusual book inherited from her father and mentor. It contains a rendition of The Merchant's Tale, a fable passed down through generations in Corvos. While the beautifully illuminated pages of the manuscript set it apart from common storybooks, its most singular feature is the enchantment which can pull the very mind of its readers into the story.

And so it is you are thrust into the role of bodyguard for Y'nazqha, who becomes the eponymous merchant while journeying within the tale. Together you must travel through a world steeped in folklore and find a treasure of immeasurable worth─treasure grand enough to stir even the most hardened heart.
Level Sync
Unlike the three previous variant dungeons, The Merchant's Tale allows players to level to up to 100.

The level of all participants will be adjusted upwards to 100, and item level will be adjusted upwards or downwards to 765. Gear is not item level synced; instead, players are given fixed stats (per equipment slot) appropriate to their job. This also means materia bonuses will be ignored, regardless of the item level of gear affixed with materia. Please ensure that a full set of gear is equipped, as empty equipment slots will provide no stats.

Experience will be gained based on a player's unsynced level and rewarded to the class or job equipped upon defeating the boss and completing the duty. Players with an unsynced level of 100 or above will receive Allagan tomestones as a reward.

Objectives
The party may unlock up to one entry in the Corvosi Folklore Record per instance.

The left path is the first answer option (residential area), the middle path is the second (great gate), and the right path is the third (marketplace).
In addition, players will be given a 20-second debuff Malefic E-W debuff, causing two opposite sectors to be unsafe.
Popup: The spheres of sand fade out of sight...
Y'nazqha: Wait, the balls are still here, we just can't see them! Remember their position before they turn invisible!
Y'nazqha: It must still be here somewhere! Look carefully for traces of its passage!
Thief: <cough> <wheeze> ...There you are! Reckoned we'd sit back lickin' our wounds, eh?
Thief: Time for payback! You'll regret crossin' us!
Thief: Hah hah!
Thief: I'll blast you to bits!
A deep rumbling sound comes from the cliffs...
Thief: Wh-What's that shakin'!? R-Run! This revenge ain't worth dyin' for!
Y'nazqha: They've run out of eyeshot. I suppose every story needs its petty villains...
Y'nazqha: A lot of good invisibility did that beast! Watch for shaking flowers─we don't want another surprise!
Y'nazqha: Oh my, the stones are floating! I wonder what keeps them aloft...
Y'nazqha: What have we here? Mushrooms?
Y'nazqha: What divine flavor! I scarcely need to chew, and the aroma overwhelms the senses!
Y'nazqha: On one side, tantalizing mushrooms. On the other...floating rocks?
Question: Which way should we go?
> Let the mushrooms guide us true!
Y'nazqha: I can tell you're curious too. My intuition agrees─follow the mushrooms!
Y'nazqha: Ungh... I can barely move!
Y'nazqha: Tread carefully...very carefully.
Y'nazqha: It seems no path is without obstacles!
>> If the player activates the rocks with the golem's electric AoE
Y'nazqha: [Forename], listen. Did you hear a sound just now?
Y'nazqha: A new path! It seems the rocks moved... Hmm. Were they imbued with some unseen power?
-optional start
x@Adept's Journal: How many seasons have come and gone since I set foot in this land, where the rules of gravity are mere suggestions? How many times have I swung my sword—each flourish bringing me one step closer to mastering the Unyielding Blade, honing the aether within my weapon to a fine edge?<br>Yet even as my body is consumed by training, my mind turns only to my dear friend, bound still to the sea. To destroy the vile thing which threatens her and hers, my bladework must be without equal.<br>When I have reached the heights I must, I shall come for you. I will stand upon those shores of our home once more and cry out: “I am returned!”
-optional end
Y'nazqha: Are golems affected by this strange magnetism too?
---
Y'nazqha: Not the easiest place to fight through, was it?
> Floating rocks warrant a closer look.
Y'nazqha: I haven't seen anything quite like this... I believe we have no choice but to get a closer look!
Y'nazqha: [Forename], [Forename]! Am I...floating!?
Y'nazqha: I must wonder as to the nature of the rocks... Perhaps their magnetic fields have been disrupted?
Y'nazqha: Unfortunately, I hardly think floating rocks could be considered treasure...
Y'nazqha: I don't know where to step, nor where to hide!
Y'nazqha: Eyaaah! Apologies, but combat is not my specialty!
>> If the Seeing Stones are attacked near each of the three large rocks
Popup: The magnetism of the atmosphere shifts...
---
Y'nazqha: Even without solid ground under your feet, you made quick work of them. Of course, I never doubted you!
Y'nazqha: Ah hah, do you feel that? Gravity! I can step surely now.
---
Y'nazqha: Some sort of rock beast, I presume?
Y'nazqha: Its surface was hard as rock, but it moved nimbly enough...
Popup: In the valley's most remote reaches they faced their deadliest challenge yet.
Y'nazqha: This is the last place I expected to run into a person...
Lone Swordmaster: Take up your weapon. I pray you can provide some measure of entertainment before you die.
Lone Swordmaster: From where shall death take you? I shall grant you the mercy of foresight.
Lone Swordmaster: Whence shall my blade strike? Look well!
Y'nazqha: Blades of aether! Don't let them pierce you!
Lone Swordmaster: Do you truly believe you can run from me?
Y'nazqha: This fighting style...sword strikes imbued with aether. Could this be one of the swordmasters that were snuffed out by the Empire!?
Lone Swordmaster: Death comes from all directions!
Y'nazqha: The blades of aether changed trajectory!? I see now why the Unyielding Blade was so feared...
> Route 9 (mushroom path, rocks activated by golem)
Lone Swordmaster: Only a true master can call the earth itself her ally!
Y'nazqha: The magnetic fields are wildly unstable... Perhaps our foe uses them against us.
> Route 10 (mushroom path, rocks not activated by golem)
Lone Swordmaster: Do not dare perish before witnessing my full strength!
Y'nazqha: Falling stones! Watch your head!
> Route 11 (floating rock path, Seeing Stones fought near large rocks)
Y'nazqha: The magnetic fields are wildly unstable... Perhaps our foe uses them against us.
> Route 12 (floating rock path, Seeing Stones fought away from large rocks)
Lone Swordmaster: Hah hah, good, good! Perhaps you shall not disappoint after all!
Y'nazqha: Falling stones! Watch your head!
---
Lone Swordmaster: Run if you dare! Doom shall find you all the same!
Lone Swordmaster: Come now, you can do better than that!
Lone Swordmaster: Not so fast!
Y'nazqha: That was like seeing two artists at work! My jaw was clenched the whole time...but in the end, you proved the mightier!
Y'nazqha: My heart is still pounding! Wait, is this...?
Y'nazqha: Why, it's the swordmaster's blade. The edge is flawless, and the decorations are exquisite!
Y'nazqha: I must say, I certainly couldn't measure the value of this. Could you? No? I believe that means we should deliver it to the maiden!
Y'nazqha: Since we both have all of our limbs, I would say that was a job well done. Thank you, [Forename]!
| description = Your latest odd job commission brings you together with one Y'nazqha, a gleaner who finds herself in possession of an unusual book inherited from her father and mentor.

|-
|Vanishing Horizon || Opposite conal cleaves that spawn two directional AoEs. Due to their Malefic debuff, players will be unsafe from these AoEs if by themselves, so they will need to stand behind a rock to block them. Only rocks that do not have a red sector facing a line AoE origin will be safe; the others will be destroyed.
Y'nazqha: A beautiful place, to be sure, but sprawling. Perhaps the locals can help us catch the scent of treasure, eh?
Y'nazqha: Thieves!?
Y'nazqha: Excellent work!
Y'nazqha: That looks slippery...
Deep in this canyon, there's some hidden place that hardly a soul knows about.<br>I reckon we'll find treasure the likes we've never dreamed of! Me and a few of the lads went to get eyes on it, but we stepped right into the nest of some monstrous bird. Barely made it out with our lives.<br>We've scrounged together every weapon and bomb we could, and we're standing by until you say the word. After we've cut and blasted our way through, we'll be richer than kings!

Popup: Standing in their path was a monstrous bird with an appetite for flesh.
Y'nazqha: It's trampling the flowers!
Popup: Yet the sight did not perturb the bodyguard, who stood steadfast and dauntless.
Y'nazqha: Where have I seen this before...? Careful─it appears to be in a foul mood!
Popup: The spheres of sand grow massive in size...
Popup: The spheres of sand fade out of sight...
Y'nazqha: What? It disappeared? There was a ball of dirt over there, right?
Popup: Though the bird was laid low, the path ahead was treacherous still.
Y'nazqha: A lot of good invisibility did that beast! Watch for shaking flowers─we don't want another surprise!
Y'nazqha: Watch your step!
Y'nazqha: What could those adorable creatures be?
Y'nazqha: Eyaaah! Apologies, but combat is not my specialty!
>> If the rocks were not activated
Lone Swordmaster: Let us see how attuned you are to the flow of battle!
Accepting the Quest
Claudian: Ah, greetings. Thanks to you, friend my research has finally gotten off the ground. SO many discoveries to be made, and ancient wonders to be restored!
...And yet, I have only these two hands with which to do my work.
Claudian: If only I could convince the Order of the potential significance of my work, perhaps they would be willing to dispatch aid. I have here a report of my findings thus far. Might you be so kind as to deliver it to Kyokyozo at Thal's Respite.

Delivering the report to Kyokyozo
Kyokyozo: Welcome, adventurer. May you find respite from your hardships.
Kyokyozo: You bring a report from Claudian of Highbridge? A most welcome surprise, indeed. I was prepared to wait months before that young one made any significant progress.
Kyokyozo: What's this!? The ruins date back to the latter Belah'dian Era, and house the final resting place of Lalafuto IV himself? The historical implications of this research are beyond anything the Order had imagined. I must arrange for additional researchers and supplies to be sent to Highbridge immediately!

*The scarecrows have been placed. Inform Claudian that the avian pests will disrupt his research no more.

*Now free to immerse himself in his research, Claudian thanks you for your assistance.

Dialogue
Accepting the Quest
Claudian: Do not look down, Claudian! You must not, you will not, you cannot look—aaaaaahhh!
Claudian: By the Twelve, my good woman/man, you frightened me half to death! But you must forgive me: I've been a bit restless of late, what with those winged nightmares swooping in from every which direction, pecking and poking and pricking at me.
Claudian: I might as well pack up my instruments and go home, as I won't be getting an onze of research done. If, however, a kind adventurer like yourself were to use these scarecrows to drive the birds away, it would be another story. What do you say?

Reporting to Claudian
Claudian: Do not look—oh, you've seen to the birds, have you? Splendid work, friend! Now to head back down and return to my research. Er, worry not, I'll be along any moment now—be on your way.

Journal
*Giott shows no sign of having ceased drinking at any point since your last meeting.

*After displaying high alcohol tolerance and higher enthusiasm for getting on people's nerves, Giott eventually gets around to suggesting that you observe Sophrosyne for yourself to gain an understanding of its abilities─in particular, the power it uses to heal both itself and other sin eaters. Fortunately, your quarry was recently spotted in Kholusia, so tracking it down in order to do so should not be unduly difficult.

*Giott─tankard in hand once again─proposes that the quickest way to lure Sophrosyne will be to create sin eaters in need of healing. As a few have apparently found their way to the Bright Cliff, you only need head there to locate one or two suitable for slaying.

*In accordance with the plan, you slay an errant sin eater. It may be prudent to seek out another and add it to the pile to ensure that Sophrosyne takes the bait, however.

*Having slain several sin eaters between the two of you, all that is left for you and Giott is to find a suitably out-of-the-way spot and wait. Whether or not your collection of corpses is enough to attract Sophrosyne's attention will be revealed in due course.

*Your plan is successful in drawing out Sophrosyne. As you watch it weave its magic, however, you are struck with a sudden vision, courtesy of the Echo. In it, you see Lamitt meeting Ardbert for the first time─the beginning of their ill-fated journey. Head spinning, you agree to rejoin Giott at the Crystarium.

*Though you have now seen Sophrosyne healing a fellow sin eater, the matter of how to prevent it from doing so in the future remains unresolved. For lack of any immediate plan of action, Giott sends you on your way, promising to think of something in the coming days─whilst continuing to imbibe, of course.

Quest Acceptance
Giott: <gulp> <gulp> <gulp> <gulp> <gulp>
Giott: An' who're you? You─<hic>─you lookin' at me? You got─<hic>─shomethin' to shay?
Giott: Got you, eh? Ha! Of course I remember my new partner. And I ain't drunk, neither. I'm a dwarf! It'll take more than...well, however much I had to get me under the table.
Giott: And now you know one more thing about me! This'll only strengthen our fellowship, I'm sure.
Giott: But we'll need more'n just a sense of camaraderie if we're out to take down Sophrosyne. So I'm thinking we should start with observation─get you a look at its healing powers. Let you see what we're dealing with.
Giott: Now, this is the perfect place to overhear the right sort of information, if you listen. Don't get the wrong idea─I don't let it get in the way of no important drinking, but I do pay attention. Anyway, what I heard is that Sophrosyne's been spotted in Kholusia.
Giott: Then I remembered─there's a little pub over in Stilltide. The Leaky Keel, it's called, and they make a decent brew. Some of the folks there should be able to point us in the right direction.

Speak with Giott at the Leaky Keel
Giott: <gulp> <gulp> <gulp> An' jusht what're you─<hic>─lookin' at?
Giott: Fine, fine! No need to give me that murderous stare. I know what you're thinking.
Giott: “That Giott,” you think to yourself, “always drinking and lounging about and drinking some more. What a sluggard! What a drunkard! What a magnificent beard! Oh, I wish I had a beard like that...” Yes, I know. You don't need to explain yourself to me.
Giott: ...We really should work on finding you a sense of humor. Maybe deal with that after Sophrosyne─it might take a while. Anyway, you'll be happy to hear that while I was waiting, I got my hands on some prime information. Also some excellent wine, which─no, information first.
Giott: Right. So, according to the local fisherfolk, quite a few sin eaters've turned up near the Bright Cliff lately.
Giott: I suggest we go there and kill as many as we can find. We can't say for sure where Sophrosyne'll appear next, but if it's in the area, it won't pass up a chance to revive its fallen friends, right?
Giott: And while we're at it, you can vent some of that pent-up rage you've got. Don't need to be pretty, so long as the job gets done. Just make sure to find me again before Sophrosyne shows up, you hear?

Slay a sin eater at the destination
Slay a sin eater at the next destination
Report to Giott
Giott: That should do it.
Giott: Now we wait to see if Sophrosyne shows itself...over in those bushes, say. And I've got the wine right here...

Sophrosyne appears
Giott: There─that's it! (Sophrosyne resurrects a sin eater)
Giott: See─it revived the other one! (Warrior of Light is experiencing a flashback)
Giott: Hey, what's wrong?
Flashback
Dwarven Healer: What a lonely place to die. The world outside is even worse than I feared...
Ardbert: ...Is someone...there? <wheeze>
Dwarven Healer: You're alive!? Well, why didn't you say so?
Dwarven Healer: I can't do much for the dead, but the living─that's a whole other matter.
The scene temporarily fades to black

Ardbert: I can't believe it! All of my wounds, healed! Thank you, kind stranger!
Dwarven Healer: You sure are lucky that I passed by. You really might have died, you know?
Ardbert: You'll hear no argument from me─I was a fool. The thought that the hobgoblin I was after might have friends lying in wait never so much as crossed my mind. I shouldn't have been out here alone.
Ardbert: Hmm... With your magic to keep me fighting, though, their numbers wouldn't pose such a problem. What do you say? You don't look to have a party of your own yet, and I could certainly use a man like you on my side.
Dwarven Healer: Wha─ I am no man, you unripened gourd! Why, I've never been so insulted in all my life!
Lamitt: Let me tell you what's what. I'm Lamitt, proud daughter of the Tholl family. And if I catch you mocking me again, I'll put you right back the way I found you, you hear?
Ardbert: Er...yes, ma'am! I certainly didn't mean to offend! The beard misled me, you see...
Lamitt: And that's that! (a scene of Ardbert wounded)
Lamitt: Look, Ardbert! Treasure! (a scene with treasure)
Lamitt: You certainly look the hero. Now let's see you act like one!

Giott: Hello? [Forename]?
Giott: Hey, you! Honorless lout! Half-empty flagon! [Lanky dullard/Spindly-looking gobshite/Dumpy little dollop of shite/Mangy pox-bearer/Lumbering lummox/Pointy-headed dung sniffer/Great roaring ninny/Craven carrot-eater]! Your mother was a hob and your face looks like a newborn's arse!

Return to Present
What will you say? What is the matter with you? / That was...colorful.-> What is the matter with you?
Giott: I thought that a refreshing round of insults would snap you out of it─and it did! Not my fault if you can't appreciate an exercise in creative wordplay. Arew you sure your mother ain't a hob?
Giott: Fine, fine, never mind. At least we got what we came for. And you didn't miss much─after Sophrosyne brought the other eater back to life, they both floated off to who-knows-where.
Giott: But what happened to you?

Giott: You saw Sophrosyne─no, the real Lamitt's past? Ha! I knew you'd have some kind of weird power!
Giott: Sounds to me like what you witnessed was the beginning of Lamitt's journey, right after she left home.
Giott: It's odd─you said she was wearing her helm, and she helped out that injured traveler just like any dwarf of honor would do. Maybe... Maybe she wasn't born a monster. But then...
Giott: It don't sit right with me, neither. But standing around wondering about it won't do nothing but make us thirsty. We're done here, so let's go back to the Crystarium.

Speak with Giott at the Wandering Stairs
Giott: <gulp> <gulp> <gulp> Ahhh... There ain't nothing like a flagon of ale after a job well done!
Giott: Don't give me that look─I did stuff this time! You saw!
Giott: And you also saw Sophrosyne work its magic. But since you haven't said nothing about it yet, I'm guessing you didn't have no sudden revelations about how to stop it.
Giott: Don't worry─I didn't expect you to solve my whole problem just like that. I only need you to remember what you saw today. Keep it in your mind. Then maybe something will come to you when you're working your magic elsewhere.
Giott: Me, I like to think while I drink─it's the most efficient way─so you can find me here if you need me. I'll let you know when I have a plan.
